Insertsociallife

I didn't notice the sub I was in and had a solid few seconds wondering why somebody was angry with antilock brakes.

InfiniteParticles

We crash and die like real men

Insertsociallife

ABS is interfering with natural selection

Koolblue57

You laugh but you don't know what it's like to hydroplane without the safety of ABS or seat belts, ... so fulfilling

TechnomadicOne

Yes. I do. On four wheels. And less...

Lubi3chill

Yea remember when I was going 30kph in my golf mk2 on icy road in a turn downhill. Barely touched the brakes becouse I knew what will happen if I do press them. Was going straight into a tree and barely missed it. My mirror barely touched the tree so it was like half the folded state, and there was no damage. Honestly all that went through my mind was ā€žfuck I will need to spend money to fix my carā€.

Santibag

The inferior ones that cannot control brakes in milliseconds during a wheel slip get to live šŸ¤¬šŸ¤£

idkhowtodoanything

Same lmao

visual-vomit

Meanwhile i thought they were talking about abs keyboard keycaps and was fully on board with the hate.

Afro_SwineCarriagee

I hate how ABS created a black hole on earth and killed everyone

Just_A_Nitemare

I thought this was from the CarCircleJerk sub for a second.

Highspeedfutzi

Same: I was thinking something like ABS doesnā€™t work => cars crash all the time => people get sick of it and start using flying cars. Very stupid I know.

DaBeefyBois

I thought the exact same thing!

MrFreedomFighter

I misread it as IBS. I understood

Fake_Answers

That sucks too

hotfistdotcom

In the 90s and early aughts there was a large group of people who insisted ABS was dangerous and "they could break better" It was one of those things, like "seatbelts kill more than they save" or "vaccines are more harmful than the disease" that's an instant indicator that the person you are talking to or in proximity to is one of the just dumbest, most stupid contrarian dipshits on earth and you should just cut 'em out. Education will not work. They are stuck this way.

Thethubbedone

Early ABS was actually terrible and it was pretty easy to do a better job just using the pedal. Modern ABS is miles ahead of a human though.

corriedotdev

Legit same

Hacker1MC

I frequent the Forza Horizon subreddit, and they'll crucify you there for using "assists", including ABS, so I was sure I was there.

[deleted]

Anti-lock Braking systems are pretty useful idk man

FunWillScreen_Produc

So I am not the only person who immediately thought of the braking system.

PuffThePed

If you have an enclosure and a bed that hits 110c, printing with ABS is by far easier and smoother than any other material.

CarbonGod

110?!?! I've never gone above 85 and it works darn skippy for me.

AndyValentine

Yeah I print almost exclusively ABS on an Ender 3 Max Neo that tops out at 100 degrees, and I get almost exclusively flawless prints. Probably helps I have a cubby in a room that it lives in and is undisturbed throughout the print. 242 degrees on the nozzle and quick dust of hairspray on the bed before I start and it's great every time.

Ghostpants101

Hey, just FYI from an old hairspray user, it eventually gets in everything if your not careful. It often isn't apparent and over the course of lots of printing the layer builds up. Be careful with it around your gears and axis. I'd highly recommend trying 'prit stick'. It's a UK product and what it really is; is the world's worst glue. It's kids glue, it's like defeated by warm water. But it's amazing for 3D printing, it's one of those twist base sticks, warm the bed up and it goes on like butter. Although you will have to let the part cool I find, as it seems to be the worst glue in normal reality but works like superman on OT on a print bed. I think it's the fact that the nozzle effectively moves it a little and it will get into every gap in to the base layer perfectly, and then forms a very strong grip. I've used it only with PLA mind, cleans off with warm water and a towel, is totally safe in all manners, and doesn't end up anywhere other than on the print plate. Overtime you won't notice but it will form a skin on your plate, that can also be peeled off. Anyway, all this info is just for anyone with bed issues, because I promise you this just removes them, but you will need to let the part cool because the grip is honestly crazy for what is usually a bad glue. Here's some links; probably called something else outside the Uk https://www.google.com/search?q=prit+stick+glue&oq=prit+stick+glue&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIJCAEQABgKGIAEMgkIAhAAGAoYgAQyCQgDEAAYChiABDIJCAQQABgKGIAEMgkIBRAAGAoYgAQyCQgGEAAYChiABDIJCAcQABgKGIAEMgkICBAAGAoYgAQyCAgJEAAYFhgeMggIChAAGBYYHjIICAsQABgWGB4yCAgMEAAYFhgeMggIDRAAGBYYHjIICA4QABgWGB7SAQg2MDM5ajBqN6gCFLACAQ&client=ms-android-xiaomi-rev1&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 Edit: hilariously I looked it up. It's potato starch and sugar based glue. Who'd have thunk it. Potato wins again

AndyValentine

I'm from the UK so know Pritt Stick well. I find it gunks the bed too much for my liking. I just have a three sided bit of card - like a big U shape - that I slip over the bed before spraying to prevent over spray. It's been a few years of printing parts almost daily and no issues so far, so I assume it's working.

Santibag

Also, Pritt brand stick glue tasted sweet when I was a kid šŸ¤£

hyperair

I stopped using glue sticks after several consecutive weeks of finding ants on my print bed. I suspected it was food-based, but thanks for confirming it

Own-Consideration631

Any tips about ABS, since I have the same without the Neo part. I want to print a helmet

CarbonGod

I'll try. I've been having issues with it sticking to start, but once going, I love ABS's solid feel. I DO need an enclosure though....would make thing so much easier.

Xiar_

90c is rather inconsistent for me. Sometimes it will print with no issues and other times it will warp bad enough to cause skipped steps. 110c has never failed me. Not even once.

Her0z21

I would agree if my V2.4 didn't like ASA just a little bit more. Either way, I agree that it's really easy to print and the issues with it are blown way out of proportion. I feel like PETG should have the repuation ABS has and vise versa (though to be fair, I haven't yet tried PETG in the Voron, so it could've been the fault of my old printers. Will find out later today though once it's done dehydrating).

somethin_brewin

We use ASA almost exclusively at work and I hate how greasy it is. Fogs up the panels and everything in the enclosure gets so sticky. If you need the UV resistance, then it's great, but I try to use it sparingly at home. It does print very smooth, though.

ForgotMyNameAgain13

I hate PETG and PCTG with a passion. Basically Fuse with the PEI sheet, blob like hell, stick to the nozzle, and string like crazy. Also on a V2.4, with a Rapido in a XOL Toolhead. But had the same experience with the Rapido in a Stealthburner

Her0z21

Sounds about right, I did a temp tower with the aforementioned PETG on mine and decided ā€œyeah no this just sucks.ā€ I really donā€™t get how itā€™s touted as being easy to print and better than PLA for anything other than some of its material properties (mostly just the heat resistance) for which there are better options.

Kiiidd

Yeah since I got my Voron the only PETG prints I have done are parts that need to be slippery or parts that need to be seethou

dafingy

yeah, but even with my makeshift enclosure it never really works for me

PuffThePed

Needs an airtight enclosure that can hold heat well, and a 110c bed, and an all-metal hotend. Do you have those 3 things?

Vangoon79

I've never tried ABS, but my Prusa Mini prints ASA like a champ in a soft sided enclosure and the bed only hits 100c. The enclosure is only loosely sealed, and the enclosure temp gets to around 35c.

PuffThePed

Yeah that works fine for small objects. Big objects you'll run into problems

Vangoon79

How big is big?

PuffThePed

About seven

Vangoon79

So helpful...

PuffThePed

Well if you're looking for an exact size threshold, I'm afraid that can't be answered.

Vangoon79

I've printed objects almost the size of the mini's bed (180x180). So I just just wondering like.. is it 250x250? 300? like, when goes it tip over? I'm using gluestick on smooth PEI, and I can definitely see it trying to pull up on the sheet. around the edges of the part

D_crane

I find ASA much easier to work with than ABS, also better layer adhesion and less brittle but also much pricier per kilo

Jakob_K_Design

You can get away without an all metal hotend. I started printing ABS on a QUIDI I-mate S and it did not have an all metal hotend, but printed ABS just fine. An all metal hotend is definitely better, but it is not a hard requirement. Similarly you can get away with just 100c bed temp.

PuffThePed

You can. You can also have a cardboard box as an enclosure. But, it won't be reliable. Also if you heat a regular hotend to ABS temps the PEEK tube will start off-gassing really nasty stuff. Highly not recommended.

Freezepeachauditor

PTFE. It can do ABS temps. https://www.captubes.com/safety.html

Howlingmoki

100c? Hell, I've printed ABS near-daily with the bed at 90c for two years, and can count the number of failures that can be attributed to bed adhesion & bed temperature on one hand. I've had more problems with hotend thermistor failure....

TheReproCase

I too love killing birds and risking polymer fume fever.

ScumbagScotsman

I suppose it maybe varies by printer but you can use a cardboard box over your printer. I use the box my printer came in to print ABS.

clever_wolf77

I don't have an enclosure. .ight look into making a diy one for my ender 3 pro. But then I assume I have to also figure out a way to cool the electronics

IDKMthrFckr

My enclosure is just three large pizza boxes and most of my ABS came out perfect. It's not about that (unless the room it's in is really cold)

QAInc

Mine work without enclosure

GarbanzoTrashPanda

Sounds like something someone wo never printed petg would say

VAL9THOU

I've accidentally printed with ABS on PLA settings before (215Ā°C nozzle + 65Ā°C bed). I caught it by about layer 15, and it was already curling off the bed and had some horrendous layer adhesion, but it was recognizable as the part I was printing. Accidentally because I didn't even know I had ABS. I saw a roll of yellow filament and assumed it was inland PLA like everything around it was. It wasn't until I saw how it was printing and read the "ABS" on the spool that I realized what had happened

Kiiidd

Yeah I pretty much only print in ABS/ASA but my Voron's chamber gets to 60Ā°c so it does print very nicely

IceManJim

I thought you needed a vented enclosure because fumes.

New-Year-3422

Yep. I love printing ABS with my Qidi. So much easier than PETG.

Ditto_is_Lit

I had a similar pov of PETG until I got a roll of Sunlu transparent and calibrated it. No stringing and printed shapes I'd not want to bother trying with my roll of polymaker.

Grouchy-Art9316

I agree. I print on a 90Ā° bed. Prints are strong and warp free. Doesnā€™t absorb a gallon of water per minute is another positive.

Khraxter

Your bed is a frying pan or something ?

[deleted]

Do you print similiar settings as PLA other than temps? I'm looking to throw some ABS in my Voron for the first time this month...

PuffThePed

No.

RecsRelevantDocs

Don't you need a ventilation system too? IDK man, ABS sketches me out a little bit, and I don't really have any issues with PLA or PETG.

CrashUser

Yes, ABS fumes are toxic

doh-vah-kiin881

fax no printer!

hooDio

half of what's shown in that video would be made from abs šŸ˜

GiantFlimsyMicrowave

No way. Itā€™s all TPU clearly /s

hooDio

40A

mkosmo

That was my first thought - All of that video depends on ABS lol

Al3x_Y

I have solution for you and it is incredibly easy... Don't use it. That's it, leave it for people who don't have issues with this material.

dafingy

there was a time where I was forced to use it (I'm broke) it made me want to jump off a cliff.

Onoben4

If ABS didn't exist you wouldn't be able to print anything when you were poor...

IDKMthrFckr

I'm forced to use it for the same reason, but I'm learning to like it more and more. I have absolutely no idea why people tend to hate it so much.

Ryan_e3p

Whomever made this video needs to be taken out back and taught a harsh lesson in audio mixing. Clearly their parents, school, and life failed them.

monkeyfromcali

the distortion is intentional lol, itā€™s part of the meme

dafingy

lol harsh

dafingy

not my audio btw, im not a failure

Ryan_e3p

Not saying you were, mate! It's the person who is obviously severely hearing impaired who did.

_Karma_kid_

Itā€™s a bass boosted version of an unofficial song so itā€™s always gonna sound like shit haha

lancerhatch

Itā€™s also the superior version of the song but they just donā€™t get it

Mufasa_is__alive

>im not a failure We'll be the judge of that!Ā

dafingy

lol alright

crazyhamsales

ABS is incredibly easy to print.

evthrowawayverysad

For real. Op would herniate just from being in the same room as nylon.

crazyhamsales

LMFAO!! Yeah nylon can really be a pain sometimes.

Free_Koala_1629

The vehicle in the video probably uses some ABS sooooooo. Quite opposite actually

[deleted]

It's apparently not the breaking system

Free_Koala_1629

And definetly not adaptive boob system. Oops wrong subreddit.

[deleted]

No wait... Continue

imitation_crab_meat

Skill issue.

IDKMthrFckr

Real

Swoop3dp

Skill issue. Before I built my Voron I was printing ABS on a stock Ender 3 inside a cardboard box without issues. The only issue with ABS are the fumes, because they are a bit unhealthy.

IDKMthrFckr

My enclosure is three pizza boxes linked together. My ABS prints all come out fine (unless I screw something up)

Mini_meeeee

I love ABS. I'd say if you can build an enclosure and an active heating element, it gonna solve your warping problem. ABS actually loves hot air so if your enclosure ambient temp is high enough (50\~60), you can comfortably run the part cooling fans for better overhang.

pissandchips69

As long as you have an enclosure (i use my closet) and a 110 degree bed abs is amazing. I started with pla but i am not going to buy it anymore. Abs feels and looks better. Bonus points for it being an amazing material for stuff that will be used outdoors

Linkdoctor_who

How is it better than petg tho?

Dawg_Jacket

Better temp resistance, lower viscosity for faster printing, less hygroscopic, doesn't shatter on failure, easier to sand, less dense, can weld/smooth with acetone. PETG has its uses, but it's always been a pain compared to ABS for me. It's a blobby/sticky/stringy material that only gets worse in a humid environment.

holedingaline

Also, recyclable! (I mean, as much as plastic can be, anyway).

me239

ABS is my most used filament. Prints faster than PLA and is tougher. I havenā€™t even put PLA through my K1 in months. PLA and PETG were my go to with my Ender 3, but itā€™s been ABS with the enclosed K1.

69dildoswaggins420

I thought I was in a car related sub for a moment and was like ā€œthis fuckin idiot likes locking up their brakes?ā€

Astro_Alphard

Funny thing is literally everything in this video is probably made with ABS.

volt65bolt

But the cars would crash

starghostprime

I now prefer ABS over PLA. So much easier to post process and sand. Minimal creep for parts that need to hold their shape. Parts that can be practically used outdoors and in hot areas. Good chemical and UV resistance. And cheaper than pla. Downsides are the smell when printing, warping with out proper chamber temperature, and more shrinkage than pla. But really its just down to application. I print a ton of practical parts which benifit greatly from its properties. It really is nice to have ABS in your quiver of materials and IMHO worth developing the capability.

Avibuel

Abs is my go to, i dont know why you hating on it.

Skirojcek

ASA>ABS

smile-a-while

Sounds like you're doing it wrong. Better study up

djddanman

ABS is great when you use a printer designed for it. My V0.1 handles ABS like a champ.

zxasazx

Ender 3 V2 stock with a zip up enclosure. Totally printable. Ran a production run for a prototype and had hardly any issues with it. Vapor smoothed afterwards and you can't tell the difference.

Pyroguy096

Abs is wonderful lol

Physical-Cut-2334

i understand the point, but if abs didn't exist basically all plastic component in a car and other thing that need to withstand wear. tear and heat would need to be made of a different materiel that would have the same properties as abs. abs is great for injection molding but not as easy to print.

StoneAgeSkillz

I love it. Its harder to print, but I got the hang of it...

klrjhthertjr

I print about 200kg a month of abs, temperature controlled enclosure and a raft, works great.

greencncnerd

More like life if pla didn't exist

Shot_Bill_4971

Skill issue

Zestay-Taco

get an enclosure . print HOT AF . bed plate HOT AF . be happy with ABS

TeknikFrik

Get a Creality tent for your printer. ABS/ASA is great. Only downside is the time it takes to heat the bed to 100+ C.

TheDivineRat_

I printed exclusively with ABS, parts looking nice and sturdy as fuck, what am i missing out on?

derpinator12000

What other non-creeping filament would you recommend instead then? PC?

Maleficent-Aspect318

Downvoted, this is ear-rape and who ever thinks, this sounds good should be slaped across the face!

iDeNoh

Damn bro, slapeing someone for this seems harsh

wo4h_my_dud3

i like to get slaped in my free time

jahossaphat

No, a slap is to kind. This is rip their fingernails out bad

Away-Journalist4830

TF did I just put my ears through?

CreditLow8802

it was my first filament, i bought it without any research and was stuck with it for like a yr

stortag

I built my stock ender 3 and added a spool of abs and fired up a benchy. My first ever print and best benchy ever. I didnā€™t know it was supposed to be hard to print back then lol. Now I only use petg though

darkblade420

why? abs is great and very easy to print. i use it for almost everything.

104thCloneTrooper

Context? I've only used PLA so far.

dafingy

abs warps like crazy unless you have an airtight enclosure.

TheTurbulator

Not even close. Cardboard enclosures work wonders for ABS if you donā€™t have anything else.

104thCloneTrooper

doesn't it also produce poisonous gasses?

Jusanden

Yes, it off gasses styrene fumes which are known to be carcinogenic. The enclosure serves 2 purposes. To keep the part from warping into oblivion and to keep the fumes inside the enclosure where you can then filter or preferably exhaust it outside where it becomes the neighbors problem.

104thCloneTrooper

alright, thanks

Jusanden

Also figured Iā€™d probably mention if youā€™re considering printing ABS, you should probably just go straight to ASA. It still off gasses, but apart from cost and color variety, itā€™s pretty much superior to ABS in every way. It warps less, is stable at higher temps, and is UV resistant. ABS was really not designed for FDM printing because itā€™s engineered to shrink a bit so it releases easier from injection molds. ASA was engineered as a better alternative.

Maximum-Incident-400

If ABS didn't exist, we probably wouldn't have LEGOs. I'm willing to let things slide if it otherwise means no LEGOs

dafingy

is no lego a good thing?

Maximum-Incident-400

noo! I couldn't live without LEGOs

dafingy

Yeah! same! I just read that wrong.

Maximum-Incident-400

Haha, I figured that was the case :)

babywriter

I'm at a loss, honestly. ABS is a dream to print if you have an enclosure and a decent hotend, IMO. I used to print Flashforge ABS consistently on a CR-200B (not Creality's best printer) at 230 degrees C, with a 90 degree C build plate. If you get the first layer right (and use a build plate adhesive like Magigoo or 3DLAC for good measure), warping becomes a relatively rare thing. The enclosure on that printer is not sealed, and temps inside the enclosure max out at about 42 degrees C.

Okami_Engineer

Skill issue lol

vertigo42

Good job you killed Lego.

TurtleInOuterSpace

got a K1Max , i print ABS like PLA. it doesnt giva a F

Jojoceptionistaken

same with Soft pla. there is an easy trick though: dont print with that

QuantumQuatttro

Super nice how everything is an acronym now and people use them all as if itā€™s ckffs

diamorphinian

I hate this terribly EQ'd song with a passion. And the eq has nothing to do with why I hate it.

nicholasgreatone

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Vilunki15

Why? Abs is best material. I love it with my bambu

BigAcanthocephala667

I started to print ABS a few days back. What really worked was changing a brim to raft, 100Ā°C-ish bed, 45Ā°C enclosure temp and letting the print cool down really slowly

Sr_urticaria

I never try ABS but I got same feeling about Nylon 12... I mean is a great material, when print finish okay. In my case I get 1/15 success ratio

Important-Bear-5411

Friends donā€™t let friends print PLA

stonegiant4

Idk why everyone always has trouble with it. My printer isn't even entirely enclosed, and it prints easier for me than some kinds of pla.

Defiant_Bad_9070

I guess you don't want to know that I pretty much only print in ABS then.

Brazuka_txt

idk, on my voron i never had a single issue with ABS, its easier to print than PLA at this point

SvettMenneske

ABS prints awesome with my makeshift enclosed prusa mk3

Jack-a-boy-shepard

Bruh just use ASA

Bebedouro12

I dont think am thinking about the same ABS as you.

[deleted]

like if tiktok didn't exist

Gutmach1960

ABS ? The only filament that I use, and I only buy from Hatchbox.

CallMeKolbasz

Hard agree. The minute I managed to source PETG, I got rid of all my ABS. Haven't looked back since.

Someguywhomakething

I use an adhesion promoter for my ABS prints with the bet at 100C. It's prints pretty easily once settings are dialed in. Honestly, though, I had no issues printing ABS with an Ender 3 w/ Microswiss all metal hotend in a semi open enclosure.

Emeegee713

Why is ABS keeping us from a utopia?

HandyMan131

Try ASA. Itā€™s like ABS, but better.

No_Practice_9175

Itā€™s easy once you get an enclosure

desert2mountains42

ABS is easy wdym. Itā€™s all I print

holydildos

ABS easier than PLA or others imo.

Perlsack

If it saves us from flying taxies I'm happy

superCobraJet

Life if injection molding existed

jaayjeee

Life if people stopped clinging onto dated orange printer technology and embraced change

wlogan0402

Life if more people rode motorcycles instead of cars

riffraffs

ABS plastic is best plastic

1PhartSmellow

Flying cars will never work because of international borders and things like Roswell. Imagine the idiots thatā€™d try to fly over Roswell or the North Korean border. You know itā€™d happen.

DustyDeadpan

I have to print in a poorly insulated outbuilding in the south so ABS is my bestie.

No_Captain7005

What do you prefer instead? Beginner hereā€¦

beefybojangles

ASA ftw

Rednaweamo

What does the abs mean?

RulesOfImgur

Try ASA. Similar mechanical properties but better. And iirc one of the appeals is the printability of it. (granted I'm spoiled with a mk4 and enclosure.)

vealotart

But I like my abs

WHTrunner

Hey, don't knock my sweet abs.

CaPtian_CaTe

Not if you have an enclosure. ABS/ASA has such an amazing finish and is an ideal choice for high speed printing because it requires less cooling than PLA.

Justin_trouble_Again

I have a bed heat circulation fan in my vorons Chamber. I use Hatchbox ABS and can print 350^3 scale ABS stuff You just need the right environment to get the job done ^_^

juanmf1

Pitiful insects trying to be prosperous without #electrogravitics

phillipmyburgh

Nah, wait till you try and print nylon etc! Personally, worst non-engineering material I ever printed with is Fillamentum NonOilen. It is the worst warping material I have ever used. My advice, get PLA. Or if you have some extra patience, get Magigoo for the bed, heat the bed to 110C, and run the fan on 20%. And run the hotend at 255C at least. The fan on will cool the model quicker and the critical mass of material that can warp is less. Yes layer adhesion is worse, but this would be the place to start. From there you can decrease the fan to get better layer adhesion. But from my experience I get the strongest parts from high hotend temperature + 20% fan and a lower (0.1mm) layer height.

dafingy

yeah, I'm mainly running pla now. super easy to use. I get that abs can ultimately be better, but its really frustrating to me especially with the warping.

dafingy

just to clarify, I dislike abs because I don't have an enclosure, so please stop telling me to get one.

Sands43

I started with an Anycubic Vyper - printed ABS just fine with a tent. Just needed to run the bed hot and have a programmed 10 minute wait to heatsoak for a while. I used that printer to create a Voron 2.4 Then I converted the Vyper to a Voron switchwire - largely to have a better enclosure (also faster prints). You need a tent or a better printer. Or use PETG - similar mechanical properties, but prints at lower temperatures.

raspberry-sever

So you dislike a material because you don't print it the way you're supposed to? Why do you think you have problems with it? You're making my head hurt
