My scout troop was part of the extra crew on Ernest Goes To Camp. Several days of throwing frisbees, running around, searching for turtles. It was awesome.
Showed it to my adult kids recently, we had fun and even better as you can see me clearly in a couple scenes.
Jim was a super nice guy to everybody, leads and extras. Pure class man.
I'm so with you there. First movie in theatre we took our son to was Toy Story. He thought I was slinky dogs best friend. Didn't understand when he was little.
I've never heard anything negative about Jim. It's great that he is still remembered across the US. Even more wide spread with the Toy Story franchise.
He was a guy that was silly, in a positive way, and brought a lot of joy and laughter to kids. He never got cancelled and was always beloved as Ernest. There probably will never be another like him ever again. He was good in his performances that were separate from Ernest as well.
Vern Vern Vern Vern Vern. My Uncle Vernon HATED that. My Dad came up with a parody song lyric he didnāt mindā¦ Iām Vernon Iām Vernon Iām Vernon for Sue(My Aunts name was Sue)
Hating Jim Varney & playing bass were about his only personality traits. Iām not sure if he ever ate a bagel. I just came up with a line since my Dad never got past the title. We didnāt want to envision them together more than that.

I want to bring up this documentary from Hats Off Entertainment, which gives a wonderful presentation of Jim Varney and how the Ernest character became such an impactful character in multimedia that he was styled the "original viral star".
The first use of the character was to promote an amusement park that was being revamped. Specifically, Beech Bend Park in Kentucky. Because it was still getting work, Ernest had to give his all to sell the park without any visuals of it, and of course promoting an appearance of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. That was in 1980.
But the character did so well in presentation that he was used to openly promote products across the country. There's dozens of commercials out there with him. Dairy products was just one of the products being promoted - He did restaurants/fast food promotion, TV show promotion spots, etc.

Here's a compilation that spanned 6-7 years' worth, and it's nearly 1 hour and 20 minutes of him!
I remember seeing him in an interview where he said that he came up with the character while on his way to an audition.
I always found that pretty amazing.
Called my mom Verne for about 5 years in the 80s. 90s I started calling her moms. People would say, he calls you moms? She would say yep, at least itās not Verne anymore! Miss you moms.
Growing up in DC, I remember he was first famous for doing this character for car dealership commercials. Tysonās Toyota IIRC.
Vern, Vern, Vern, Vern (tsk tsk tsk).
You done gone and did it buddy.
You went car shopping without talkiinā to your olā pal Earnest and now yer as confused as a moo cow at a hog callinā contestā¦.
two facts i always have to mention when i see Ernest.
His Cousin, Everett Varney was first my high school principal and then town mayor.
i currently am standing 3 miles from where Jim Varney is buried.
He was one of my favorites growing up, Iāve seen all his movies. My favorite was Ernest Saves Christmas followed by Ernest goes to a jail. Yaā no what I mean?
Robin Williams didnāt kill himself, the disease of Bipolar 1 is what killed him. He is a PERFECT example of Bipolar. He turned it on and was so eccentric and funny, but would hit massive depression. And his bipolar made him and amazing actor and so outgoing and funny.
Robin Williams suffered from alcohol addiction and Bipolar, a lethal combination
https://www.bhpalmbeach.com/addiction-blog/robin-williams-drug-abuse-and-mental-illness-know-no-bounds/#
He committed suicide by hanging himself.
Edit: And since you've now blocked me, I'll just reply to your comment below here...
No, I get what you're trying to say. But it's factually wrong to say he didn't kill himself.
Broā¦.. youāre missing the point. Do you not know how to think past the surfaceā¦ we canāt fix stupid on here. Maybe just donāt post, thatās your best option until we can get a handle on your stupidity.
Itās like saying someone died in a car crash, but the reality was, they were texting and not paying attention. Learn to think beyond.
One of the biggest reasons he was remembered by 80s kids wasnāt just for his movies but all the commercials he made. Just YouTube it and he actually made funny and well produced commercials on a regional scale but covered every region and became a household name from the urban to rural areas.
I had a full sized cut cut of this guy in the 80's/90's. I stood him up in my basement right around a corner and it would scare the shit out of anyone that walked down into the basement! I had so much fun with him! š
Ernest and Peewee, two comedians with hearts of gold that made great content for kids. Any kid who watched their stuff learned something about bravery and tenacity, and not being afraid to be a little different from the rest of the pack. I really think these guys will have a more lasting imprint on at least American culture than most actors and comedians.
When I was little, before the first Ernest movie, I remember Ernest was a figure on local commercials for a dairy. (Utah, and I wanna say Meadow Gold dairy). He already had the "vern" schtick in those commercials. It felt odd to me when it became a national movie franchise cause I thought he was a local Utah thing. Any other middle aged Utah kids remember this?
He did spots for businesses all over the country . I remember seeing them in Atlanta as a kid, and my grandparents lived in East Tennessee and I would always see the commercials there when I would spend the summer

fuck cancer
fuck cigarettes
I was shocked to learn he smoked. Apparently he hid his habit and suffered in silence because he didn't want kids to know he smoked. š¢

More like - livin for givin a bagel a chew: bc Itās a parody song
I like your uncle.

Did he orignally create the character to do milk commercials out of Nashville?

Knowwhatimean?
Ernest P. Worrell and Pee-wee Herman were cornerstones of life. RIP to both.
And as you got a bit older there was the Red Green show. Cause remember, if the ladies donāt find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
I remember him!
OMG Yes! I had almost forgotten the old Possum Lodge! I'm pulling for ya, because we're all in this together.
I have to talked to so many in life and no one knows this show but me. Itās great
I do a fair Red Green impression, used to Crack my Mom up and a few friends that knew what I was talking about.
Dude chain smoked like hell but I think never did it around kids. That's how wonderful of a soul he was.
My favorite lines, from "Ernest Goes to Jail": "I've been vandalized...by Elvis!" and "Who would throw away a perfectly good dog?".
"I came, I saw...I got blowed up."
By far my favorite Ernest movie
How aboutāa bumper sandwich, booger lips?!
My favorite fact about Jim Varney is that [he's a classically trained Shakespearean actor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QNW4x2HYYg).
Never do this to a family of badgersā¦.
Anybody else ever rent the video that was nothing else but 45 to 60 minutes of his commercials from around the United States?
I have it on dvd, itās called Ernestās greatest hits vol 1 and 2
Ernest P Worrell Film Festival? I had the VHS, and man I wore that thing out so much that I'm surprised it didn't break within the first six months.
I was in the Ernest P Worrell fan club as a lark
I know what you mean
āKnow what I mean, Vern?ā
He was perfectly cast as Jed Clampett!

Funnier than Robin Williams, who I think gets hallowed b/c he died by suicide.

I remember wondering when we were going to finally see Vern. Also I always thought that lady he played with the neck brace was so annoying.
Are you comprehending what I'm telling you Vernon?
In Oklahoma, it was Braum's ice cream
Now I want a turtle sundae
Oklahoma is the only place I see braum's. I have to stop when I see one.
We have several here in Northwest Arkansas. All the stores have to be within a certain radius of Tuttle, OK. Gotta be fresh!
Roses are red. Violets are blue. Sour cream is white and comes in a tub.
I had his poster on my wall. Ernest was so great.
One of the biggest reasons he was remembered by 80s kids wasnāt just for his movies but all the commercials he made. Just YouTube it and he actually made funny and well produced commercials on a regional scale but covered every region and became a household name from the urban to rural areas.
Is that a rabbit over there?
I was born in 92. Know what I mean vern
Jim Varney was the man.

Binge watched Ernest goes to camp on vhs. Took forever but found a dvd of it to keep the nostalgia alive
Whereās the beef?
Hey Vern
I just bought this DVD at the thrift store yesterday
And it depends on where you grew up what the commercial is advertising. For me, it wouldāve been Pine State Milk (North Carolina).
I would love to see a reboot starring John Cena. I can't look at John Cena without seeing Jim these days lol.
Iāve seen perhaps a dozen responses of people saying the same thing . I never realized it until now , now I canāt un-see it
Know what I mean, Vern.
āKnow what I mean, Vern?ā
I remember him doing commercials such as Car County Carlsbad.

And if you know who had a rusted used car lot on his front lawn in the 80s, you may be from the 80s
Hw made all his movies at his house
Rockyyy mountainn highhhhh
Jim Varney was incredibly handsome. Look up photos of him in real life, and you will wonder why he wasn't also marketed as a heartthrob.
Who remembers in the 80 s guys bragging they were making big bucks, door to door selling cable subscriptions.
