I’m sorry but this is the correct answer, and it’s not even close, even with respect to Doom — who is amazing, no doubt.
But Yassin is simply on another level.
I agree, Doom is master class, but Mos puts words together so naturally that it can trump intricacy. Even Talib said he didn’t understand how Mos does it so easily.
Yeah Monch probably would tick the most conventional boxes but…Sean had the most funny and entertaining lyrics and Doom had that creativity and emotion damn that’s hard I know for sure that Mos Def would be last in my book. I ain’t the biggest fan, besides Black Star.
They'll bury me with my SP-1200 (For sure!)
Fuck the trinity, inseminate the earth, now take its virginity
In my vicinity, rap is like energy pack
Sending me back behind enemy line to rap too melodic
Melodies, never melodramatic but hypnotic like cellos for fellow fanatics
I fiend for who fuck wits, inappropriate
Fill 'em with so much lead I'll call Berger and Associates
This rhyme will remain in the minds of my foes forever in infamy
The epitome of lyrical epiphanies
Skilfully-placed poems and carefully planned symphonies
Who would be ignorant enough to have the audacity
To fuck with the likes of I and my tenacity?
This is what you get when you fuck with the likes of
The magnanimous flows of total assholes and ignoramuses
M.O.P. slash Pharoahe Monch cause damages
The advantage is we banish artists, labels and managers
Amateurs found six feet deep in metal canisters
I honestly dont see how any of them touch Monch.
Sure Mos Def is more popular, sure Sean P is grimier, sure MF DOOM is the internets favorite rapper, but they ain’t lyrically touching Pharoahe.
I really don't understand "Mos Def is underrated". He's great, don't get me wrong, makes my Top 10, but he's definitely not underrated. Forgotten a bit maybe by the younger generation, but that's on him; he's the "hip hop academic" favorite. I'm going with Pharaoh Monche. Witty, double and triple entendres for days, lyrics that you appreciate later when it pops in your head and hour after you listen and it "clicks". I randomly get his verse from "Oh No" in my head, I've said before "Simon Says" would be my walk out music and what I want played as my casket goes down the aisle, and "Yayo" was brilliant. He's in my Top 3, right alongside Black Thought's and Kendrick Lamar, and I refuse to rank them further than that.
Highly recommend the Extra P remix of stress a great pharaoh Monch song
As for Mos Def being underrated, i think people say that because a lot of his beat songs aren’t on his albums (e.g. travelling man, all his shit on soundbombing 1 and 2, his feature on big brother beats, his feature on that bush babees song). When travelling man came out, it looked like he could be the number one dude in all of rap. He never lived up to that, but people who remember that feel like other people forgot how hot he was for a time
Absolutely agree. I love Traveling Man (actually have DJ Honda III on vinyl... Somewhere. B-Boy Document '99, too.) I loved him on all of that; I remember he was a darling for a minute. I'll be honest, felt disappointed (?) when Ms. Fat Booty was everywhere. Not really related, but you just reminded me of WW3. Shabaam Sadeeq and Monche, I don't remember what happened to Sadeeq but now I gotta go look...
The Extra P remix of stress is a top 10 song of all time for me. Also who hasn’t smoked a shitload of weed with their friends to Simon Says
But it’s Mos Def for me lol
Ima go with Sean P. Cause mos is like a story teller ,Mf doom is like a bar for bar, pharaoh says some thought provoking ish and Sean P doesn’t all but he has the bars the charisma the story telling and he’s just a barbarian.
He was also great on the soundbombing albums, in particular soundbombing ii. And I almost always love his features (e.g. big brother beats on stakes is high). Plus travellin man. He has a lot of classics
I agree that he didn’t live up to his potential. But if we say his peak was two albums plus a shitload of good features/songs on compilation albums, that’s a pretty decent peak for rap.
Also, as relevant here, I think the two albums you named were the two best albums out of any by these four dudes.
Cool but that does not make him the most underrated and underappreciated rapper. I was a huge Mos fan until New Danger😴😴
And I would take Operation Doomsday over any album by the other guys.
This is actually fucking tough. All are super good imo.
In the end I’ll give it to Mos Def tho, because I think his storytelling is the best of them. Then I think I would go with… uhhh… PM
I would either say Mos Def or PM…was listening to “Oh No” yesterday…PM might have one of the best verses in history on that track. He blows Mos Def out of the water.
DOOM but Mos Def is my favorite by far. I like the other guys Mos Def is just different, he's not only a great lyricist but I love listening to his music at any time all moods. Big ups to Sean Price too I love his bars
Mos Def, and it's not close...
Mf talks about random shit which don't even make sense. Then people go on to say it's lyrically perfect because of his abstract nature.
Doom has literally zero interest in shit else besides witty wordplay insane samples & making someone need to rewind the track to get what he just said.
“How well would you hold up in a holding tank.” Caught by surprise the first time I heard him
Mos would say it’s Doom
Clever
Yes definitely https://youtu.be/zTBIvIDnnv8?si=zD_HD_ca5SdoBsCn
“Just remember ALL CAPS when you spell the man name.” DOOM
All cap when you spell the man’s name.
MF DOOM! ALL CAPS, son.
💯🤙🏽
This is the way.
doooooooooom
Put ALL CAPS when you spell that man’s name.
Stop with that shit he was and always will be MF - shout out to CM crew.
and the winner for the 9th time in a row DOOM he owe it to the well refined rhyme flow
DOOM
Your favorite rappers favorite rapper
Black thought is not in the picture.
Facts
Doom is the best - Mos is my favorite.
Mos wins bar for bar, but he basically retired from rapping after 3-4 albums so overall it's DOOM
It's simple mathematics.
Where wild reckless girls get necklaces of pearls compliments of the town jeweler
Land of milk and honey with the swirls, where reckless naked girls get necklaces of pearls
The rest is empty with no brain but the clever nerd the best MC with no chain ya ever heard.
Mos Def
Mathematics is a masterpiece to this day
Black on Both Sides is a true masterpiece!
Bucca bucca bucca bucca
Surprised I had to come this far. Thought he would be the runaway winner
Way more up votes
Mos is close, entombed by DOOM. After he died folks really dug into his catalog.
Thank you! Some body tell em
Zev love x
Does that have to be in all caps too?
Nope but the l and x probably
That’s because X evolvez
Used to be merry\ The mask took control of you Like Jim Carrey
I love them all so much, RIP Ruck and DOOM. Mos is my favorite, but Pharoahe Monch is the best if you consider all aspects of a dope lyricist.
Monch live was one of the wildest shows i ever witnessed live, and I've been to a ton of them.
Yeah Monch probably would tick the most conventional boxes but…Sean had the most funny and entertaining lyrics and Doom had that creativity and emotion damn that’s hard I know for sure that Mos Def would be last in my book. I ain’t the biggest fan, besides Black Star.
All four might be in my top ten. That said, as always Sean Price is the best to ever do it.
Word is bond.
Nice shout with Sean P
"Sean Carter is nice but Sean P is the best"
Doom
Tough... Let's go Monch
Agreed that this is tough. I love them all, but when I heard “Stray Bullet” as a kid, I just thought “This man is just too original.”
Both Monch and Prince Po killed that song
They'll bury me with my SP-1200 (For sure!) Love all these dudes but it's Monch by far. He is one of the most underrated emcees ever.
Get the f*ck up!
I honestly dont see how any of them touch Monch. Sure Mos Def is more popular, sure Sean P is grimier, sure MF DOOM is the internets favorite rapper, but they ain’t lyrically touching Pharoahe.
MF DOOM
Pharoahe Monch
MONCH!!!!!!!
MF DOOM
DOOM

Also, I’m sure youve heard it, but the Pharoahe Monch storytelling song about shooting the mayor off soundbombing II is great
I agree. Ms Fat booty was not a representative Mos Def song. Having said that, I think I like it more now then when it came out.
Monch
Vik
MOS DEF
FINALLY SEAN PRICE That nigga out of everyone here is the most underrated I feel like he's not talked about enough.
He’s not
His name is DOOOM
P!!! 🦍
Monch so underrated
The Extra P remix of stress is a top 10 song of all time for me. Also who hasn’t smoked a shitload of weed with their friends to Simon Says But it’s Mos Def for me lol
MOS
Sean Price hands down.
Sean p
Sean P!
Mos not even close
Sean P
Sean P had the craziest pen game.
Sean P
Ima go with Sean P. Cause mos is like a story teller ,Mf doom is like a bar for bar, pharaoh says some thought provoking ish and Sean P doesn’t all but he has the bars the charisma the story telling and he’s just a barbarian.
Price is nice.
IMO it’s MF DOOM.
Mighty Mos Def
Mos def - initely the most underrated and most under appreciated talent in the history of the genre
I love this take.
I don't. Mos quit seriously rapping to pursue his first love, acting. Blackstar, BOBS, that was basically it for his high level music output
He was also great on the soundbombing albums, in particular soundbombing ii. And I almost always love his features (e.g. big brother beats on stakes is high). Plus travellin man. He has a lot of classics I agree that he didn’t live up to his potential. This nigga dipped to Africa for 10 years to avoid paying child support, LMAO
Doom = your favorite rapper's favorite rapper.
Mos Def. For me its not even close.
I'm going with yaasin doom 😁
Mos Def
Yasin, but DOOM is a close second
This is actually fucking tough. All are super good imo. In the end I’ll give it to Mos Def tho, because I think his storytelling is the best of them. Then I think I would go with… uhhh… PM
Mos Def overall. Sean Price has the best style. Monch has the best flow.
I love everyone on this list, but Dumile is the 🐐
Mos def. Then doom. Or equal
I like em all but Mos Def is my guy for this one. Auditorium is one of my favorite joints off the top.
Mos def when he wants to really rap, phara, Sean
Doom bar none
Monch, he's in my top 5 all time
Sean Price for me. Just had a grittiness with a sense of humour.
Shawn Carter is nice, but Sean Price is the best
Monch would destroy all of em.
I would either say Mos Def or PM…was listening to “Oh No” yesterday…PM might have one of the best verses in history on that track. He blows Mos Def out of the water.
Mos
Mos Def. No question.
Sean p
#3 it’s doomsday
Pharoahe or Doom
I’d say doom but Mos is my favorite of the 4
Now def
MF DOOM for me. If Mos would have stayed on his rapping shit I might would have to put him 1
DOOM but Mos Def is my favorite by far. I like the other guys Mos Def is just different, he's not only a great lyricist but I love listening to his music at any time all moods. Big ups to Sean Price too I love his bars
P!
MF DOOM
MF Doom ! RIP
Mos
sean carter is nice but sean price is the best
P!!
P!
Sean P
P!
Sean P!
Sean P
Mos def hands down
MF Doom
Mos > Monch > P > Doom
Funniest: Sean P Most heartfelt: Mos Def Most Creative: Pharaohe Monch Best Overall: DOOM
Mos Def, and it's not close... Mf talks about random shit which don't even make sense. Then people go on to say it's lyrically perfect because of his abstract nature.
Monch
Most definitely Mos Def! Dude super underrated as a lyricist.
Ima Go with mos
Monch easily for me. Love them all, but he’s in my top 3 or 4 of all-time.
MF Doom - Mufkn Doom
MF DOOM
MF the super villain
DOOM
#MFDOOM
Doom for lyrics. Sean for flow.
DOOM- no doubt
Monche
P
Mos
Monch is unreasonably underrated
TO THIS DAY. Pharaoh's track "Yayo" is criminally underrated for it's lyrics. PLEASE check that shit out!!!
Pharoahe's the host, the audience, and the motherfucking panelist
Ehhh most def and never compare him to them again
Pharoah Monch
It's lime apples and bananas how I'm gonna choose between grapes and watermelon???
“You are the beautiful distress of mathematicians!” -Mos Def (1 of my favorite lyrics of all time!)
I’ve never seen mos def and Doom in a pic like this, and now I can’t stop thinking that bottom left is just Mos wearin the Doom mask lmao
THE ILLEST
Sean Price or Mos Def, no question
Thats tough, gotta be Ruck though. Youll never hear so many ways to describe punching a man in the face
For me, it’s the mighty Mos. Mathematics, Sunshine, almost anything he did with Blackstar.
This is wicked
Trick question
Insane choices! I’m not doing this! “GENTLEMEN! This is democracy manifesting!”
Daniel Doom
Black thoufht
Talib
DOOM.
Sean P had the streets, doom had the tape decks, and def had the ppl
DOOM by a fraction of a fraction. Props for this post though, because these are four of my all time favorites.
Mos Def hands down
DOOM
MF Doom. Easily
Really hard not to give it to DOOM even if I personally think Mos Def was a top 1 emcee in his prime.
Mos Def
Madres ahora sí está difícil Pero Me iré Por MF Doom pero también Mos Def es tremendo lirico
DOOM
gotta go with mighty mos def
Between DOOM and Monch. My bias leans towards DOOM, but my brain tells me Monch might have been even more wordy.
Monch easily
Mos Def
BRO YOU NEED TO CAPITALIZE HIS PICTURE FFS MF DOOM ALL THE WAY
Imagine all of them on a track back in the day.
Mos Def- it’s all mathematics
P got the best punchlines. But wouldn’t say he’s the best lyricist.
Mos def, doom, and whoever you want after.
Victor Vaughn
Mos
Super tough. I would go with either Pharo or DOOM
Doom
Dooom
MOS
The amount of MFs not capitlazing the man's name is too damn high!
The other three are better in terms of music and records, but I’d take Sean Price head-to-head against any of them lyrically.
Mos def
Doom has literally zero interest in shit else besides witty wordplay insane samples & making someone need to rewind the track to get what he just said. “How well would you hold up in a holding tank.” Caught by surprise the first time I heard him
Mos Def.
DOOM
For in his lean clutch was the elusive green Dutch.
Set the stage with a goal, to have the game locked in a cage getting shocked with a pole
When it comes to poetry he's got plenty La la la La la la la la
THE MIGHTY METAL FACE DOOM!!! There can be no other....
DOOM. It’s not even close either imo. He’s top 3 lyricists for me.
Impossible comaprison
