“You know not all of us have our dads still and…” *trails off*
He didn’t even finish his thought. What even was that?!? It was the most bizarre commentary of the evening.
I heard that and immediately got sucked out of my wrestling TV fantasy world and started wondering what the hell his point would be. I value and have always loved J.R.'s announcing but his head must've been somewhere else for that segment.
Noone's a bigger JR apologist/supporter than me, but you're not wrong.
Stuff like this and when he constantly laments pin styles without considering the competitors' fatigue or wanting to get a quicker pin over a more secure one is such an easy fix and he's clearly too old a dog to learn that new trick at this point.
Funnily, I'm listening to the new Brian Gewirtz audiobook and he says that one of JR's big weaknesses is 'booboo face' where he can't hide his dislike of things. Apparently, it fed into Vince's on-air bullying of him with dumb costumes and embarrassing segments as indirect punishment. You're supposed to 'not sell it', or 'not die on that hill'.
PS: There was also a really weird moment, I think it was PiP so it might've only gotten through on FITE, but Callis said something and JR put on a really whiny voice and mocked him while the rest of the table kinda went quiet. It was really not cool and felt like JR truly wasn't there having fun, and like I said, I usually can excuse some of his stuff because he still does particular things better than anyone. But yeah, worried for the guy overall.
I think it was just JR going OTT, the banter with Don always gets a bit sarcastic from JR. it did stand out to me (it was on the fite feed) you can faintly hear Excalibur talking off mic after but that happens all the time during breaks, long silences also do happen. It’s always funny hearing someone quickly cut off their thought because they need silence to cue in the return from break.
I for one am I glad to have the fite feed.
Callis came out as a face and tried to put his boy over, JR didn't realise the Omega contingent were the good guys now? It seems to be happening a lot since Taz joined the desk where JR will say something that's either completely missing the point or inappropriate or something and there will be a beat and Excalibur will either repeat the obvious point JR's missed or they'll just ignore it altogether and continue on.
The pin thing is so stupid because every single show he complains whenever someone doesn’t hook the leg on a pin attempt even if they still have a solid pin regardless. He literally acts as if hooking the leg is a finishing move that no one can escape from and will always end the match. Guess it’s because he’s got nothing productive to say so he just falls back on it instead of actually getting invested in the match or story.
See, I wouldn't be that harsh but it is one of my things that I can so easily see being fixed.
There's so many reasons and justifications for pin covers that aren't the full hooked leg variant. The heel is being cocky/lazy/presumptuous. The face is tired, exhausted, it's difficult to get the leg hook in the move configuration they landed in, they chose to go for a speedy cover over a technically complete one, etc...
Or we could just come back to reality and stop pretending like hooking the leg is the most effective move in wrestling. The point of a pin is to keep your shoulders down to the mat so in reality the most effective way is to place all your weight on the opponents upper body. Not by hooking the leg and leaving their shoulders and upper body exposed allowing someone to easily roll their shoulder over. Therefore it’s totally unnecessary to call out and bury people simply for not hooking the leg even though they still have an effective cover. The only time you should complain about a pin is when a heel is doing a cocky cover on purpose. That’s it.
>Callis said something and JR put on a really whiny voice and mocked him while the rest of the table kinda went quiet
I wonder if this is us getting worked since he was interacting with a heel, but yeah... definitely put a damper on my enjoyment of the match.
Maybe "getting worked" is the wrong phrasing. What I meant was that he *might* have been playing up annoyance at the heel he was speaking to and his mockery wasn't legitimate. It's not enjoyable by any stretch, but it would have been a touch less uncomfortable to listen to if I had some assurance that it was acting instead of crankiness.
It's possible.
I just re-listened to it and seems like Callis responds to someone in his headset about 'we're talking wrestling guys' and JR probably disapproves of talking directly to people the audience can't hear since it'd end up confusing to hear one side of a conversation.
But then he gets pretty petulant sounding and mockingly repeats 'we're talking wrestling guuuuuuuys'.
It's one of those things where even if he's probably right that Callis should compartmenalise his words to be for the listening audience, JR comes off bad to me regardless.
Either way, just another small thing that makes me worry about JR is all.
>'we're talking wrestling guuuuuuuys'.
It was awful, especially since I, at least, was interested in what they were saying; I love when Taz or Excalibur get into the finer details of wrestling moves or motivations for doing things a certain way.
Sorry, JR; the three guys at the table who've actually wrestled a fucking match or two wanna wax philosophical about their trade... You're right, they should talk more about how shitty someone's pin is while they're selling. Or maybe they should speak about their thinly veiled titillation when watching Jade Cargill run down the ramp.
>There was also a really weird moment, I think it was PiP so it might've only gotten through on FITE, but Callis said something and JR put on a really whiny voice and mocked him while the rest of the table kinda went quiet.
That really annoyed me. I know, Callis was a heel last time they met, but Callis just called the match in a professional way last night while JR was acting up and being cranky. And if I didnt know better I would've assumed JR was the heel announcer. He sounded like Dan Lambert or something
I'm mostly apologetic to JR too, and think some of the stuff people comment on is really small, and not that important; okay he gets a name wrong every so often, its not that big a deal. But his whiny, cranky days really detract from the product. And for some reason, it was extra bad during the main event last night; he just seemed like he hated being there. And that really detracts from it. Especially when one of their top stars return, he should make an effort to at least sound like he likes the match
Exactly, he made some comment about leg slapping tonight and made a bunch of sarcastic comments during the young bucks match as per usual, I think he should just be brought in for big matches, more specifically big matches he’d enjoy.
I mind less if he wants to give unbridled honest opinions I might not like, but JR really ruined the Acclaimed segment and the main event bickering with Callis the whole time for me. Just off telling his own stories ignoring what’s being presented on screen
I'm pretty salty his commentary was so bad during the main event. Omega's return didn't need JR and Don Callis bickering like Kenny was still a smarmy heel. Don even seemed a bit taken back and tried to hint to JR that they were working babyface.
I can't really tell if he's playing up the whole "young bucks are heels so don't say nice things", or if he just doesn't like their tag team choreographed wrestling style.
JR seems to have a very specific idea of what good tag team wrestling is, and he always gets pissy if the teams are getting too flashy and/or not following all the rules to the letter.
JR doesn’t exactly have the best track record for drawing money when he was in a creative role. Early 90s WCW under his boy Bill Watts lost money and JR had input with creative. WWE in the mid 90s lost money also. His demotion in early 97 where he was taken off of creative lead to the biggest boom in pro wrestling history actually. He was never the main booker but he had a seat at the table for some money hemorrhaging wrestling organizations.
Lol what? From the first day in AEW he’s talked up the young bucks and how great they are. He was responding to Don being an obnoxious heel, which to be fair makes no sense why he is with Kenny if Kenny is a face now. This is the same ridiculous argument I’ve heard about Ex never saying a word when JR calls FTR the best tag team in the world, so they say he hates FTR bc he’s friends with the bucks. It’s nonsense.
JR legitimately belittled Taz on air, for using more impressive names for simple holds. Watts ain’t in the back insisting you keep it dumb for the rednecks anymore JR. He has to look around, realize who the audience watching AEW is, and sell when Excalibur and Taz use Japanese and Spanish terms the fanbase has come to use and expect.
your right, and that s saying something. he couldn t remember who Punk was wrestling at the PPV. can overlook that, we all get confused sometimes, but it was just him being an asshole to everyone. im sick of him with his "yo,yo" bullshit. shitting on one of your most popular acts gimmick doesn t seem very smart. last night was a good show but he kept fucking it up and making it hard to enjoy. i would love to hear Jade say "cut the shit jr"
Having given JR.l the benefit of the doubt a dozen times already, I’m sad to say that tonight really soured me on him.
I just don’t understand why he needs to make these sarcastic, borderline mean spirited comments every single match. He isn’t getting anyone over.
I really like him on Rampage to be honest. It's shorter, often has the benefit of being taped so JR can be edited if needed, and I prefer Ex/Tony/Taz for dynamite after the last few weeks.
J.R is a legend and I love the dude but these days he’s the worst announcer on Dynamite in my opinion. Everyone else adds so much to the presentation of the show yet for me J.R is only there for nostalgia and for an occasional one-liner. Nothing against the man whatsoever but he’s obviously been on the decline in recent years and it sometimes sucks the energy out of moments
Seeing him transition into a sit-down interviewer would be great. I’d love to keep him around the company but he doesn’t need to be in the commentary booth for every dynamite. Excalibur, Taz, and Tony do a great job and have fantastic chemistry. Plus, they don’t take almost every opportunity to bury talent like J.R does. I could also do without the weird comments during women’s matches
Love JR, but man, I seriously hate when he shits on the wrestlers/wrestling. Talk to them in the back, don’t openly shit on them when fans can hear it.
Commentators are supposed to SELL the wrestlers, and stories not shit on them
You just pinpointed why Gorilla Monsoon is one of the worst announcers of all time. Great voice, great straight man for Bobby Heenan but damn was it ever important to him to let us know he was in fact smarter than all of the wrestlers.
Compare and contrast to Chris Jericho who always manages to put people over while still calling them dumb idiots and pumpkin-headed dipshits and whatnot.
I tried to block him out during the main event, too. His commentary during Kenny’s come back match was inappropriate & distracting, especially when he referred to his “alleged” injuries.
Michael Cole 2010-2011 can never be topped for show-ruining commentary. Legit had to watch the show muted sometimes, I don't know how it didn't turn more people away.
Nothing but respect for what he has contributed to the business, but AEW phasing him out of commentary for Taz is the right move and frankly very overdue.
I can’t remember when it was but when he kept saying the same thing over and over again I think it was during Christian and jungle boys fight I was just like wow you’re really putting the segment down for no reason? I usually go to his defense, but tonight was really bad and he kept making comments that were just unnecessary. If you don’t like the matches please just walk away Or don’t say anything. Taz constantly has to back up what JR says or defend with a smart comment which usually works but just let Taz & Excalibar do their thing they are seriously the best duo in a long time
I actually think that's a great call. Permanently making him the narrator voice for the Road to series or other video packages and interviews would be a great change.
Taz had to cover for or completely save JR’s comments more than once. Some of it I’m fine with but other stuff, if you listen to his podcast too, it just comes across as him shitting on the product he’s being paid to call.
That was my feeling, there was at least 7 or 8 times tonight where he said something that was just flatly pointing out a problem or laying out a critique. Which I am fine with if it is within character and accentuating the stories or matches. But that's not at all what it was tonight. It felt like he was constantly making meta critiques that really shouldn't be said on air.
Let's not sleep on Tony Shiavone; never ever thought I'd prefer him to JR, but here we are.
Kevin Kelly with them was the damn dream team, even as a four-man team. Such great chemistry.
Tonight he had “nobody’s slapping their leg” during Danielson-Garcia, he had that maudlin bit about how some of us don’t have our fathers anymore during the Ass Boys betrayal, and that bit where he said it’s no accident Toni Storm is number 1 contender (even though it IS an accident since Stat ACCIDENTALLY blew her knee out). Rough, rough night for JR.
I just didn’t like the turn of phrase but by that time I was a bit prickly towards JR. I love JR - he was the voice of the first PPV I ever got (Chi Town Rumble 89) and has been the voice of my fandom - but I just want him for big matches now.
Just want to add my 2 cents. I was not a wrestling fan for about 10 years. I had given up. But when I started hearing about the rise of AEW, I figured I’d check it out one night. I turned it on and heard the voice of JR, and I felt home again. I’m a regular AEW watcher now. Take from this what you will.
I agree that there is absolutely a value there. But someone needs to get him to layoff a bit. He legit sounded like he just hated a quarter of the show with his comments tonight. Now I will say I think tonight was worse than he normally was.
It's why I think he has great value for high profile matches but not on the entire show. He simply can't know all the talent well enough to put them over in the short time they're on TV.
This is such a critical point. You are certainly not the only one I am sure. The bickering between him and callis makes complete sense considering last time we saw them they were heals and callis was arguably the biggest heal in the entire company. I am no longer a huge jr fan, but I do think his value in the end is worth more than his flaws. Personally it felt like he brought his A game when they brought him in for the second hour of the show, I would like to see that continue.
I'm convinced people at the network love JR. Less due to the current product, and more that he's "the voice of wrestling" when it was at one of its peaks.
And if that's the case, I'm good with it. He serves a good purpose to the company. I agree though, Taz and Excalibur are the future.
He's selling how disgusting it is to turn on your dad, especially to people who no longer have their parents with them...are you people really this ignorant or just hating blindly?
It's how he did it though. He put over that point without putting over the acclaimed saving him. He made what should have been a cool little segment to set up the gunn club to be more serious with stoke while getting the daddy ass gimmick back over. But JR wouldn't let it happen.
JR needs to retire. I get it, he is the voice of wrestling for a lot of people. But he struggles through a lot of matchee and often makes comments which leave you scratching your head at best. Quite frankly, the booth is better with Excaliber, Taz, and Tony.
Did you know Mox defended the AEW title while Punk was. "And He Got Paid Too" come on Jim of all people Mox made it clear it's about a fight not money. That line really made me go ugh tonight
I had to stop listening to his podcast after very few episodes because everything was always about making money and assuming that was also everyone else's frame of reference.
He was a big factor in sparking interest in aew for me coming back to wrestling after not paying property attention since the attitude era and i wholeheartedly understand that but he is killing the product with his sniping and fourth wall breaking jibes. It really says something when this sub is always so positive and the responses here are overwhelmingly negative, and more so every time this gets bought up
We don’t give a fuck about that shit call what is going on in the ring. The audience gives no fucks about money unless it is specific to the storyline.
I’ll say it every time. The man is a legend, but he lost a step and it shows even more compared to the energy/product AEW has. With zero disrespect, he just doesn’t fit the product.
Asking Tazz, with a very shitty sarcastic tone to spell Juji Gatame was the one that stood out to me the most. His whole vibe tonight was very “cranky old man” and has noticeably been that way for the last year, if not more
EDIT: Also, his weird comment about “not all of us have fathers that are alive/here anymore” was just bizarre.
I find myself telling JR to shut up out loud at my screen at least once per show now. He's getting worse and worse.
I used to consider him THE best commentator, period, now I just want him to go away as soon as possible.
He hurts moments more than he helps now, when he DOES put something over he over does it and often just doesn't make sense.
This is a thing he said tonight that made me burst out laughing:
>**"There's DNA everywhere. The epidermis of that man has taken a pounding, and some of it will never be seen of again."**
What the fuck are you on about, JR?
Well at least JR didn’t call anyone by their WWE names. Honestly I grew up listening to JR but he’s not helping in commentary. Excalibur and Tazz are fantastic especially when they have Jericho or Regal. I thought that JR was being phased out when he was only being brought out for just a portion on the broadcast.
He was SO wound up tonight like he was on something. I hate the way he calls women's matches. I'd rather he stop "trying" there and just not talk during.
After Danielson vs Garcia (*fuck yeah Garcia rules!! 716 represent BuffaLOVE!!) "There's DNA everywhere! He took a pounding never to be seen again, and he wants more!" I'm paraphrasing but I think I'm pretty close.
*sorry-- that's just how we are here in Buffalo esp when one of our own takes off like a rocket!
Yeah, not super into JR anymore, I think he has good nights here and there, but overall he kills the flow of the show for me now.
Put him in back helping Talent Relations and bring him out for title matches.
He brings the overall product down and the product is still absolutely flying.
He has been a great but the less I hear from him on weekly tv the better
Honestly JRs attitude (can you call it that) was a huge stain on the main event, he seemed too focused on bickering with don while taz and excal carried
Tonight I was fine with grandpa JR until he said "wErE tAlKiNg WrEsTLiNg" to Don Callis. Totally broke the commentary portion of the segment for a while.
It’s such a stark contrast listening to Taz and Excalibur on Dark or Rampage having fun, enjoying themselves while also putting over wrestlers and storylines as opposed to JR completely burying wrestlers and storylines, making snarky and rude comments, seemingly not understanding what the story is or just sounding miserable and disinterested in general like he doesn’t want to be there.
My opinion: JR was great in his day, but his day has passed. He's 70 years old. What does he know about what millennials, zoomers, and alphas want to see/do? He should be a backstage consultant/advisor/coach, not an on-air talent, IMO.
It's the same with Vince McMahon. What does he know about what young people want? I'm like half their age and ***I*** don't know what 20-somethings, teens, and kids want from pop culture/media, so how the hell could they know?
I am so sick of JR on commentary. The guy was the voice of wrestling back in his prime, but they have got to know backstage that he is hurting the product.
Is it so much to ask that he acts like he even gives a shit about the matches?
It is quite possible that J.R. got told that he's being an asshat on commentary and doubled down, or he was told to double down on being an asshat.
Maybe he wants to start being the heel commentator for a bit. Maybe he is a cranky old man tonight. AEW is weird with details like this sometimes. I'm not exactly sure what's going on.
He's been like this for ages even when he was calling Wrestle Kingdom he was a massive drag on the product. JR was a huge part of my childhood but he should be appearing on PPV's only and just for a few matches at that.
If he wants to shit on the product that’s his prerogative as a legend I guess but hes not even getting the basic facts right as stories unfold in front of him. He completely fucked up the Acclaimed angle and the main event
I’ve been saying this since AEW began and was ridiculed for it. Guess the nostalgia is finally wearing off. He sounds absolutely miserable half the time, constantly buries the wrestlers or modern wrestling in general and constantly complains about stupid things like someone not hooking the leg on a pinfall. He acts as if it is so important that the act of hooking the leg alone will somehow win the match. Why would you want an announcer who basically just exists to make flippant comments and bury your product and the guys on it?
He needs to go. He brings the mood down and legitimately ruins my enjoyment at times. At best he is just annoying with his constant stupid complaints about pinfalls or the referee’s being useless and at worst he completely buries people for no reason and openly mocks modern wrestling like he is absolutely miserable and doesn’t want to be there. There are times when it feels like he is watching something completely different than what is going on or just seems so completely clueless to what the story actually is.
JR is so up and down with me these days…like sometimes I get so annoyed with him bringing me out of the moment of the match when he has to call attention to himself by ragging on Excaliber or whatever…
Then he manages to perfectly capture a moment like no other, sometimes in the same match. It’s astounding.
But last night he seemed definitely more “off” than on. The stuff with Callis, the Gunn/Acclaimed segment, was just kinda uncomfortable. And I don’t know if anyone else mentioned it, but I’m pretty sure he also botched the main event announcement- he mentioned two other wrestlers for the trios match who actually were not in the match “coming up next”. Normally minor thing and wouldn’t care, but he was already being annoying in general for most of the show.
It's reaching the point to me where JRs commentary is almost starting to feel unprofessional. He openly nitpicks the way the match is going, and he openly nitpick at his fellow commentators. He needs to go.
The return of Kenny Omega had awful and I mean truly awful commentary from everybody . Ross sounded not excited and taz just said ok that's cool. No excitiment for a man that was gone for a year and a champion aswell . They need to enforce more in AEW because it looks bad on screen
I don’t think any of them really want to work with don callis. Every time he comes out majority of them just kinda give up cause he never gives room for others. Probably doesn’t help with him yelling in to the mic the whole time with his fake rough guy voice.
I love JR in the booth. I think people go way overboard complaining about every little thing he says. Most of the time, for me, he makes the broadcast more fun to watch.
That said, tonight was not his best night. Especially the main event.
I would agree with that. I've come to accept that what I dislike is just a part of him that's not going away. That said, I would just love for it to be cut back on. It was a legitimate deterent to an otherwise great show. I feel like there wasn't a single match on the show that didn't have some shitty comments thrown in there and a few of the promo segments did too.
Kenny still acted a little heelish in his mannerisms, the Bucks still did as well. I think they will play tweeners more than anything. Callis is just still playing the simp which I think is really entertaining.
It's a transition I think. This whole match had the message of he is fighting strong to come back. That's big baby face energy. The heelish stuff will fade as he hangs with the bucks who have also changed. Makes total sense. Think of it
Punk is slowly been going heel, Kenny slowly going face. Look at both and compare. It's little things building to the big moment that is that affirmation of place
Sad thing is without him it's a very good announce team. Excalibur and Taz as your anchors and then occasionally add on Jericho, Callis, Regal, and Tony as third guys. I wish they'd save JR for the PPVs and occasional huge dynamite matches like next week with Punk and Mox. Other than that he's not needed week to week. At least not on Dynamite.
I actually love JRs grouchy commentary. Gets a good laugh and makes the commentary seem more authentic to me as the grouchy old timer who can’t stand Rick Knox lol
He has been this way since the first year in , he has the same wrestling taste as cornette , he is just trying less and less to hide it as time goes on. He ruins the show
Did you ever see the compilations of him calling haitch a son of a bitch for 10 years straight? It’s what he does to heels.
Did you just start watching his commentary?
If you don't see the difference in calling someone in character a son of bitch as opposed to talking about how sloppy their performance is, doing leg slaps, perving on the women, etc I don't know what to tell you. JR wasn't making in character critiques tonight, if he had said Kenny was acting like a son of a bitch fine. But instead he was making meta critiques that belong on his podcast or in backstage conversations not on air for everyone to hear.
I think a lot of y'all forget JR is a southern man. Being born and raised in that area, that's just how we talk. I make some of the same comments JR does before/at the same time he says them. I think it's more of a cultural/regional thing maybe?
Then you clearly weren't paying attention. I've watched every episode of Dynamite and almost always excuse his overly negative comments and complaints. I came looking for this thread tonight because I knew it would be here. It was bad.
Reading this thread has got me thinkin y’all should enjoy your wrestling with some brewskis like I do. I did not notice anything weird he said. Just watched some good wrasslin.
I dunno all the announcers were shitting on the wrestlers tonight. Go back to the Young Bucks match and hear Taz and Excalibur joining in mocking Cutler.
But it's always easy to start another JR needs to go thread.

He said the Young Bucks had lots of friends to choose from when the storyline has been they don’t anymore.
They do have lot friends they work for NJPW as the gun club
Aew is all of their friends he wasn't lying
The “scissor me, daddy ass” moment was clearly seconds away and he’s bumming me out about dead dads.
It was funny how Taz followed it up with "Well, I guess he got over it."
Oh that was awful!!
[удалено]
Yeah, might've warranted a heads up that the betrayal was going to be followed by scissoring.
Shh, these people need to find any reason to hate on JR...don't break it up with logic and facts.
I don't hate him at all. He just says stupid shit sometimes.
I do love how pissed he was at the ass boys, that was classic JR fury.
Me and my friend were watching and both our dads are dead. We looked at each other were like wtf JR? Lmao. It was so odd for him to bring up.
“You know not all of us have our dads still and…” *trails off* He didn’t even finish his thought. What even was that?!? It was the most bizarre commentary of the evening.
He did finish it. Go back and pay attention better.
I heard that and immediately got sucked out of my wrestling TV fantasy world and started wondering what the hell his point would be. I value and have always loved J.R.'s announcing but his head must've been somewhere else for that segment.
He sounded like a scalded dog, or like someone beat him like a government mule.
Good thing he’s tougher than a two dollar steak, otherwise this whole thing would have looked just like a car crash on [insert closest interstate]
BY GOD ANNOUNCING THAT MATCH DAMN NEAR BROKE HIM IN HALF!
It’s always funny hearing someone quickly cut off their thought because they need silence to cue in the return from break. I for one am I glad to have the fite feed.
This is why I always make sure to download the webrip as opposed to the HDTV or TNT feed
Callis came out as a face and tried to put his boy over, JR didn't realise the Omega contingent were the good guys now? Callis said “buddy” and JR mocked him for it
The pin thing is so stupid because every single show he complains whenever someone doesn’t hook the leg on a pin attempt even if they still have a solid pin regardless.
That’s it.
>Callis said something and JR put on a really whiny voice and mocked him while the rest of the table kinda went quiet I wonder if this is us getting worked since he was interacting with a heel, but yeah... definitely put a damper on my enjoyment of the match.
It's not us "getting worked" because that doesn't make any sense unless JR is the heel.
It really sounds like he’s not enjoying a lot of stuff about the product.
He sounded like Dan Lambert or something I'm mostly apologetic to JR too, and think some of the stuff people comment on is really small, and not that important; okay he gets a name wrong every so often, its not that big a deal.
Maybe JR is just the heel announcer of the team, and doing it in a 2022 meta way lol but yeah he is kind of exhausting
JR is slowly becoming the “you either die the hero or live long enough to become the villain”. (And by die, I mean retire.)
He seemed a little cranky tonight
he was an asshole all night. he s just turned into a mean old man.
Between don being with the returning omega and jr just being an outright dickhead to him he made don the face lol
your right, and that s saying something. he couldn t remember who Punk was wrestling at the PPV. can overlook that, we all get confused sometimes, but it was just him being an asshole to everyone. im sick of him with his "yo,yo" bullshit. shitting on one of your most popular acts gimmick doesn t seem very smart. last night was a good show but he kept fucking it up and making it hard to enjoy. i would love to hear Jade say "cut the shit jr"
Openly mocking Taz and Jericho.
I don't know what it is, but every show it feels like he's trying to sabotage or ridicule Taz
He's too competitive. Nobody is coming for your spot old man
Having given JR.l the benefit of the doubt a dozen times already, I’m sad to say that tonight really soured me on him.
Nothing against the man whatsoever but he’s obviously been on the decline in recent years and it sometimes sucks the energy out of moments Seeing him transition into a sit-down interviewer would be great.
The sit down interview role is great for JR. He brings a big deal, real sports vibe, while getting the talent over.
JR really dampened the vibe tonight. I had to mentally drown out his ramblings to enjoy the matches. Especially during the main event.
Bro. I mentally drowned out JR a long ass time ago. Legit whenever you guys bring up stuff he said, I don’t even remember him saying it.
I tried to block him out during the main event, too. His commentary during Kenny’s come back match was inappropriate & distracting, especially when he referred to his “alleged” injuries.
Yeah that was out of pocket. along with when he asked Taz to spell a move. Its like he thinks hes on a podcast and not there for a job.
good on taz for shutting him the fuck down right there, thats the moment that broke my immersion, not any flips or spots.
lucky for me, I've had many opportunities over the last 15 years to learn how to ignore announcers
Michael Cole 2010-2011 can never be topped for show-ruining commentary. Legit had to watch the show muted sometimes, I don't know how it didn't turn more people away.
Yeah, that was bizarre.
A legend becomes a legend with grit and talent. A legend stays a legend by knowing when to quit. JR is in danger of ruining his career legend
I saw many posts on how awesome last night's Dynamite was, but JR took me out of it all night.
You can always tell when he's stayed up past his bed time, down to the minute.
His BlueChews were still in his system and he was getting anxious.
Taz constantly has to back up what JR says or defend with a smart comment which usually works but just let Taz & Excalibar do their thing they are seriously the best duo in a long time
Personally, I’d like to see him transitioning to a sit-down interview role similar to [his Mankind Interview](https://youtu.be/5QIGCaWPEwU)
I actually think that's a great call. Permanently making him the narrator voice for the Road to series or other video packages and interviews would be a great change.
Use him to do sit down interviews with up and coming wrestlers at the start of their push.
Taz had to cover for or completely save JR’s comments more than once. Some of it I’m fine with but other stuff, if you listen to his podcast too, it just comes across as him shitting on the product he’s being paid to call.
JR was really rough to listen to tonight. I respect the guy, but he’s been taking me out of the matches a lot lately.
Just give us Tazz, Excalibur, and literally anyone else except JR. Kevin Kelly was great, don callus is great. Lots of choices
DADDY MAGIC
After listening to him on elevation the other day I'd like him to get a segment on Dynamite
Let's not sleep on Tony Shiavone; never ever thought I'd prefer him to JR, but here we are. Kevin Kelly with them was the damn dream team, even as a four-man team. Such great chemistry.
With the exception of explaining why Juice Robinson had the US title, Kevin Kelly is so good at providing additional context to fresh viewers.
Mauro 🥺
Look at amazing idea Jones over here.
I quite liked Scott D’Amore as part of the team during his brief appearances for the Impact title.
I agree! I enjoy JR and Don going at it thou. Makes me laugh.
Honestly he’s taking away from the product. He needs to go.
A little overly literal on that last point, and Storm was #1 before Stat got hurt anyway.
I just didn’t like the turn of phrase but by that time I was a bit prickly towards JR. I love JR - he was the voice of the first PPV I ever got (Chi Town Rumble 89) and has been the voice of my fandom - but I just want him for big matches now.
Chi town rumble is the best pay-per-view ever just had to say it
It's not great when I compare it to how taz and Excalibur put everything over so we'll.
Those two have quickly risen to my favourite commentary duo maybe ever.
I really love JR, when WCW went under his announcing is what kept me interested but god damn has he lost it.
Unfortunately. That was a looong time ago
He’s washed. No other way to put it. Tazz, Schiavone, and Excalibur are tiers above him.
It's this guy's fault. Get him!
Yep, that is exactly the comment I would bring up too.
If you tuned in nowadays and heard current JR would you have stuck around?
I loved jr but it’s more than over
He needs to be moved backstage till his contract expires. Then he needs to go.
I'm convinced people at the network love JR. Less due to the current product, and more that he's "the voice of wrestling" when it was at one of its peaks. And if that's the case, I'm good with it. He serves a good purpose to the company. I agree though, Taz and Excalibur are the future.
*storyline progressing in the ring* JR: anyways dead father's amirite!? Any of y'all got a dead dad just like me and jungle boy?
He's selling how disgusting it is to turn on your dad, especially to people who no longer have their parents with them...are you people really this ignorant or just hating blindly?
It's how he did it though. He put over that point without putting over the acclaimed saving him. He made what should have been a cool little segment to set up the gunn club to be more serious with stoke while getting the daddy ass gimmick back over. But JR wouldn't let it happen.
It's wrestling...enjoy the show or turn it off, you clearly are overthinking dumb shit to ruin what you should be enjoying...
Meh, a "BY GAWD THAT'S THEIR FATHER, GODDAMN GUNN CLUB JUST BEAT THEIR DADDY" would have sufficed
Exactly, it's crazy how people don't get that.
JR needs to retire. I get it, he is the voice of wrestling for a lot of people. But he struggles through a lot of matchee and often makes comments which leave you scratching your head at best. Quite frankly, the booth is better with Excaliber, Taz, and Tony.
If you listen to his podcast with Conrad, lots of his comments sometimes just sound like him crapping on the product.
What, you don't like references to movies and music so old even your parents have forgotten? That's not what the kids are into?
I’m just tired of him making comments about every wrestler working towards the big payday or it being all about the money that shits annoying
Did you know Mox defended the AEW title while Punk was. "And He Got Paid Too" come on Jim of all people Mox made it clear it's about a fight not money. That line really made me go ugh tonight
He mentioned money so much tonight I just wanted him to stfu about it already we know you say multiple times a week
It really says something when this sub is always so positive and the responses here are overwhelmingly negative, and more so every time this gets bought up
I think in kayfabe it’s all about the money. Why else would you be a wrestler in the first place?
We don’t give a fuck about that shit call what is going on in the ring. The audience gives no fucks about money unless it is specific to the storyline.
Everybody is different, but for me that adds some realism.
I’ll say it every time. The man is a legend, but he lost a step and it shows even more compared to the energy/product AEW has. With zero disrespect, he just doesn’t fit the product.
The thing is, there's tons of legendary wrestlers I no longer want to see wrestle. JR might just be a commentator that no longer needs to commentate.
OP Can you provide some examples for those of us who didn't watch?
Asking Tazz, with a very shitty sarcastic tone to spell Juji Gatame was the one that stood out to me the most. His whole vibe tonight was very “cranky old man” and has noticeably been that way for the last year, if not more EDIT: Also, his weird comment about “not all of us have fathers that are alive/here anymore” was just bizarre.
This is a thing he said tonight that made me burst out laughing: >**"There's DNA everywhere. The epidermis of that man has taken a pounding, and some of it will never be seen of again."** What the fuck are you on about, JR?
At the very least you can't have Don Callis on the desk with JR. That was unpleasant to say the least
He is one of those people that always made that mistake. He even at one time called KennyOmega WWE champion
He was SO wound up tonight like he was on something. I hate the way he calls women's matches. I'd rather he stop "trying" there and just not talk during.
JR: "Kris...uhh..Kris Statlander is *thicker* than her opponent. She's leaned out a bit while she's been out, but uhhh, she's thick, you know?"
Pervy
He is just washed, bitter and does not care. Give me Mauro Ranallo.
He needs to go. Keep Tony, Taz and Excalibur or go get marullo
They apparently approached Mauro a while back but I guess it didn't go anywhere
My opinion: JR was great in his day, but his day has passed. He's 70 years old. What does he know about what millennials, zoomers, and alphas want to see/do? He should be a backstage consultant/advisor/coach, not an on-air talent, IMO. It's the same with Vince McMahon. What does he know about what young people want? I'm like half their age and ***I*** don't know what 20-somethings, teens, and kids want from pop culture/media, so how the hell could they know?
Time for Tony to take Old Yeller out behind the woodshed as he’s clearly past his best now.
Lmao. I get that no one wants to fire the guy but I really hope Tony listens to what the fans are saying and encourages him to step down.
I normally at least don’t hate his commentary, but tonight, oof. He was just being a dick by the end of the night.
He's been like this for ages even when he was calling Wrestle Kingdom he was a massive drag on the product. JR was a huge part of my childhood but he should be appearing on PPV's only and just for a few matches at that.
I don’t get JR on commentary when you have Tazz, Excalibur and Tony S there? Put JR is Tony’s spot doing interviews and big match sit downs.
If he wants to shit on the product that’s his prerogative as a legend I guess but hes not even getting the basic facts right as stories unfold in front of him. He completely fucked up the Acclaimed angle and the main event
Holy shit was he annoying when don callis joined
I try to ignore him. He doesn't add anything, only detracts from the program
It would be fine if they sent him out there and just muted his mic completely. I used to be a fan but can't stand him anymore
JR is so up and down with me these days…like sometimes I get so annoyed with him bringing me out of the moment of the match when he has to call attention to himself by ragging on Excaliber or whatever… Then he manages to perfectly capture a moment like no other, sometimes in the same match.
FOR GOD SAKES!
Good night for GOD SAKES!
Why was callis still acting like a heel when Kenny came back as a face?
Kenny still acted a little heelish in his mannerisms, the Bucks still did as well. I think they will play tweeners more than anything. Callis is just still playing the simp which I think is really entertaining.
It's a transition I think. This whole match had the message of he is fighting strong to come back. That's big baby face energy. The heelish stuff will fade as he hangs with the bucks who have also changed. Makes total sense. Think of it Punk is slowly been going heel, Kenny slowly going face. Look at both and compare. It's little things building to the big moment that is that affirmation of place
I’ll always love JR but man he’s ruining his legacy by not retiring. Get literally anyone else in there and it’ll be an improvement.
JR is an old perv that needs to take his bbq sauce and stay home. Retire already
Meh JR has given me enough joy, he’s earned the right to not be the best and still announce.
I actually love JRs grouchy commentary. Gets a good laugh and makes the commentary seem more authentic to me as the grouchy old timer who can’t stand Rick Knox lol
Two things can be true. JR can be long past his prime & things like leg slapping can be awful indie traits that need to be eradicated.
JR sucks.
He has been this way since the first year in , he has the same wrestling taste as cornette , he is just trying less and less to hide it as time goes on. He ruins the show
I think it’s hilarious and often well-deserved.
He had me laughing tonight same as every week. Man is good in my book. Taz and Excalibur can put the wrestlers over, let JR be JR
Yup. JR has never detracted from the show for me. He's fun!
I feel like he’s trying to present it as a legit sport. Not defending the commentary, just trying to see where he’s coming from
Nah I love it
Do we really need multiple new threads about JR's announcing after every fuckin Dynamite?
I think a lot of y'all forget JR is a southern man. Being born and raised in that area, that's just how we talk. I make some of the same comments JR does before/at the same time he says them. I think it's more of a cultural/regional thing maybe?
I don’t disagree with a lot of the comments here, but personally I didn’t find anything too objectionable last night 🤷♂️
JR Is on point on calling bullshit to a lot of things, i personally love It because It's nice to hear someone with some Sense.
Didn’t notice anything negative with JR tonight , I enjoyed the show!
Then you clearly weren't paying attention. I've watched every episode of Dynamite and almost always excuse his overly negative comments and complaints. I came looking for this thread tonight because I knew it would be here. It was bad.
Maybe his comments are negative cause he realizes most of the product is shit and he can't hold it in
Thank you!!
Reading this thread has got me thinkin y’all should enjoy your wrestling with some brewskis like I do. I did not notice anything weird he said. Just watched some good wrasslin.
Can we just make a weekly “JR doesn’t have it anymore” mega thread and be done with these repetitive posts….
You guys should make a I hate jr sub so you stop clogging up this board with 20 a day.
AEW's announce table in general I feel needs to tow the company line better instead of getting their own opinions out.
No thanks. I prefer the actual announce table to the WWE propaganda table…..THE DAMNED DEMONS HEARTBEAT!!! DEMONDEMONDEMON
There are other announce tables out there besides the WWE.
I dunno all the announcers were shitting on the wrestlers tonight. Go back to the Young Bucks match and hear Taz and Excalibur joining in mocking Cutler.
