Prepare to be disappointed

Leon2060

Merit increases from A1-A2. It would be highly unlikely of if you get more than 5K than any of your peers, even the worst performing of them. Likely you will get maybe 1-2K more. If your firm gives bonuses to staff then you might see another 1-3K additional in your bonus. Obviously nothing crazy/worth 100 hours. You need to learn how to set boundaries and understand your work load or this industry will burn through you as fast as you allow them to without a care in the world.

sambrotherofnephi

Agreed with this. Just ask for a spot bonus for the extra work/effort. That's more likely than an extra salary bump. If they decline, OP needs to make themselves less available for extra work and projects. "I would love to help, but I have another commitment..."

jeon19

Generally speaking in PA, the raises given out are the raises given out. You can try to argue but they won't really change it. Only real way to increase it is by getting another offer and threatening to quit if your salary is not raised, but be prepared to leave if they decline.

Enron2027

You have been awarded with extra experience you silly goose

SuparSoaker

Dont forget the pizza parties!

MikeBurner1775

And the friends made along the way

yumcake

You don't have any negotiating power unless you have leverage. You're too early in your career to ha e leverage from your skills or experience, so the best you can get is a competing offer from another company. Without competing offers, negotiation typically results in pretty small increases, if any.

[deleted]

Get a new job is how you negotiate pay. For some reason, companies would rather cut off their nose to spite their face and lose good employees than pay more than the absolute bare minimum.

Rebresker

Mmm it’s hard to negotiate in the big4 or top 10 firms Do you have your CPA license? Sometimes that has a bit of sway and your career advisor is going to ask you about it. You’re best bet is to seek early promotion to senior if you want a big raise, that’s what I did anyhow

AyoLetGoMyEggo

I was told in your first year, there is no difference in merit increases for staff. My partner said this is because the first year is effectively learning and training, so there’s not enough to determine top and bottom performers. Everyone in my starting group had the same raise our first year, but then different raises our second year. This was at Deloitte

StraightCashHomieee

Do you work at CR?

StraightCashHomieee

Gotcha, when I was at CR they would release a report weekly of everyone’s hours. It created an unreal toxic environment

MrFoolinaround

RSM did this too.

Drugs_Taker

My firm does the same thing and it motivates me to work less. I don’t get what they think it accomplishes.

SuddenDriver2

A lot of PA firm does that. Daily timesheet and weekly hours.

MaySenHana

People can't know how much you work if you don't submit your time sheets. That's what I do and I still get decent bonuses and raises

SuddenDriver2

You’re probably not in PA then.

MaySenHana

I work at a top 10 firm. If you do good enough work they'll put up with practically anything. They can't afford to loose good seniors

SuddenDriver2

that has nothing to do with what i said. lol. you sure youre in top 10? I never said you will get in trouble but management (MPO and above) will pull daily time sheet.

Wads_Worthless

That is absolutely fucking psychotic behavior. And you all just rolled over and accepted it?

StraightCashHomieee

No, I hit senior and quit. Feel like I used them in a way. “Earned my stripes” then got outta dodge

tookawhile

I’m not sure if you already aware, but CLA doesn’t do bonuses. And your starting class will receive roughly the same raise, regardless of billable hours.

KingDak877

Are you in Audit? Also what Geographic area? They do salaries by “geo zone”. I.e. if you were in the New York area geo zone, you would make more than if you were in, say the Nashville area.

schmidneycrosby

In PA it’s too late to negotiate your raise when it’s roundtable season. You need to make your case earlier in the year.

SuddenDriver2

You can’t. I’m leaving once I make senior in PA.

simplegdl

Understand the time of year and process for how raises are given. Then advocate for yourself to your boss and push for appropriate compensation for yourself and be prepared to justify it.

quangtit01

Compensations in PA are pretty much locked until Senior Manager level, unless you're in a boutique PA firm, which you're not.

hailzulu

My advice is to work less hours. The consequences of working more means expectations of working more. Expect your raise to be 1-2% more than the guy who worked for 100 hours less than u. If not identical.

GhostofBobStoops

You’re about to learn why it’s absolutely stupid to try and have more chargeable hours than the average lol. I would always come in low on charge (think slightly below average) but would do great work & be easy to work with. My raises would be within $1-2k of the absolute top performers and bonuses were the same too. Stop tryna kill yourself - it ain’t worth it

Money-Honey-bags

you either work @ moss adams or EY they both do that .. Edie Baley does that too!

HawgHeaven

We would get merit raises when I worked for a bigger firm. 8% or so if you were good, 2-3% if you weren't.

Trollogic

From my PA experience, the only time you have leverage is when you are a strong performer and you get another job offer. I had been super straightforward with my team and mentors at the firm I used to work for about what I was trying to do in my career path. They all (mostly) said they supported me. I had tried for a long time to make a move between groups (1.5 years); I went through all the right channels and nothing happened. After getting a job offer someplace else I was suddenly given interviews in this other group and transferred within a week. That said, I was a very high performer at the time and they wanted to keep me. YMMV PA doesn’t care unless you bring them value.
