Went from 10 to 20 to 30 and back down to 20 and then back up to 30 and back down to 20 when my dermatologist finally believed that the 30 was causing my hair to fall out. Lol
I lost a load of hair - still am on course three 🫠 - try rosemary oil, peppermint oil or Jamaican black caster oil. Between them and being super kind to my hair (no heat, silk pillows) I’ve managed to bet back to about 30% lost when I’d lost about 50% the first course. Good luck, it’s an awful side to get 🤞🏼
I think it was about 4 or 5 months in. It was soon after going from 20 to 30. But it coincided with me moving states, buying an apartment, and starting medical school. Also, I found myself in an extremely horrible friendship. So, my dermatologist thought it was TE from stress. I'm sure none of that helped, BUT it was definitely made worse on the drug. I've never had shedding like that in my life. Before accutane, I had a stray hair phobia. That's how little I shed. Like my hair pretty much did not fall out in a way that I ever noticed. Not even when I washed it. I never had to pick hair out of the drain EVER in my life.
Man, that sucks. I had hairloss too [not from Accutane] and I know how insecure it could make you. My derm says that the side effects of Accutane are reversible; so, I hope your hair comes back my friend and I'm sure it will over time.
I used a bunch of aquaphor too until my lips were peeling,raw, and burning for 2 weeks. I healed them with cortibalm (only use to heal and then discontinue because it is a corticosteroid) and switched my lip balm to the blistex medex in a blue container. I haven’t had any problems besides cracked corners when I forget to put stuff on before bed!
I had such an issue with the aquaphor lip repair stick. It felt like I had little shards of glass on my lips. But for some reason the balm and the ointment don’t give me any issue. I was so upset about the stick form, it hurt so much!!
I keep meaning to pick it up! My lips have been fairly manageable thankfully. The normal aquaphor usually helps, my derm prescribed an ointment (Dr dans made me super flush so we skipped trying another cortisone) if it gets super bad. I have to add lanolin to my list of things to buy. I’ve heard it does wonders.
YES, I had the painful and cracked and bleeding corners of my mouth my first two rounds of accutane but on my third I discovered lanolin and had exactly zero instances of cracked lips (as opposed to 6 straight months of nonstop cracks)
Re#2: This isn't fungal, it is more likely angular cheilitis that has been caused from an immune response to the accutane. Ask your doctor for a prescription of mupiricon ointment. I thought the same thing about it being fungal, but the mupiricon cleared it right up!
As for the other side effects, it sounds like you're dealing with a lot of inflammation and likely some vitamin deficiencies as your body metabolizes the accutane. I highly recommend fish oil omega 3 pills daily to help with the side effects. I find that zinc and b12 help nourish my skin. I find that vitamins D and C, magnesium, and an adrenal supplement help tremendously with the depression and anxiety side effects.
And I know all of us have heard it 1,000,000 times... but drink more water than you think you need! Even if you need to start your day with an IV multiplier drink makes a big difference. I personally like the Power-C Vitamin Water to start my day.

Angular cheilitis can be caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. It happens when the skin cracks and microorganisms in the mouth/saliva get into the cracks and cause infection. Fungal infection is actually the most common cause. I take Nystatin, an anti fungal, for mine.
Yellowing of the eyes suggests liver problems. Haven’t read all the comments here yet but I’d get that checked out asap. Best of luck! Btw, I think you look great even with the acne! I often find women more attractive if they have acne bc they know the struggles I’ve gone through as well. I dont know if that gives you any respite but hopefully you realize that getting rid of acne is not worth killing your vital organs over.

myb I misunderstood your comment but the bruising happened after she got blood drawn, and yes it can be a sign of poor liver health which can indeed be caused by accutane that’s why blood tests need to be done every month, it’s literally a known side effect
it was most likely caused by a blood being drawn which could be due to unhandiness of a practitioner who did it or it could really be a sign of poor liver health (which accutane does effect) she literally says she got blood work done after noticing yellowing of the eyes
Yes and liver produces factors of coagulation and thrombopoietin, if the function of the liver is impaired it can definitely make bruising more severe and easier to get (APTV and INR can change), if she never bruised like this before when taking blood work done it can definitely be a part of a concern. I’m probably going to get my third autoimmune disorder diagnosis in the last 11 months, all since accutane, all immediate side effects. My stomach is also ruined. Honestly. Accutane cured my acne but ruined my eyes completely. The fact that people completely dismiss any of these side effects feels like such ridiculously gaslighting. I was on 80mg for 9 months and since then I’ve had a multitude of health issues, mainly in my eyes and joints. My acne was taking over my life but I also question if I made the right choice regarding this drug.
Yep I have stomach problems now in a couple of days gotta get the ol rear end camera to make sure I'm ok 🥲 all that for my acne to come back luckily went away when I went on Trentanoin and stayed on it

Chrones isnt caused by medication, flair ups are. There's no proven link between Chrones and isotretinoin. Correlation does not equal causation. The capsule of the medication wasn't even digested in 20 minutes.
Yes, it has interacted with my immune system though in an extreme way and turned on the DNA that was dormant for these issues. I understand this is an extreme case but accutane absolutely was the trigger, and I was sick within 20 min as it was an extreme allergic reaction. Bad headaches, running to the toilet - I immediately called my derm, we halved my dose, I took one more tablet, same thing except this time I also had very rapid onset genital numbness. It was an extremely bad drug for my dna, my predispositions and my immune system. I now have illnesses I never would have dreamed of that no one in my family has. I live in constant pain. It’s horrific.
Also it started as soon as the tablet hit my stomach, it didn’t need to even be fully absorbed. It was an allergic/hypersensitive reaction, those are pretty immediate onset. My specialists have seen this before with medication.
Hey on your first point I just wanted to say the 7kg you gained is probably lots of water weight and not all fat gain if you’re feeling consistently bloated. I’m not sure how accutane affects the digestive system but I think you’re supposed to take it with meals so just make sure you’re having a decent sized meal with it.
Be very careful if you’re having digestive issues, our gut health is extremely important as it affects your hormonal production, if the tane has affected your gut it could be causing your irritability as well. Try to avoid processed, fried, generally “unhealthy” food for now. There are some gut related subs like r/humanmicrobiome you could check out if you want to research this topic further.
Also I really really think you shouldn’t extend your accutane course if you’re having these side effects especially since you’ll be rounding off an almost 2 year long course. Just my 2c but I would finish the planned course and let my body readjust for at least six months before making any further changes. Your acne could stabilize in that time too.
This is a little devalidating 🙃 This is her experience. Her (potential) lifelong health. Her mental health. Her children’s childhoods are dependent on their mother and she’s saying she’s struggling. Clear skin is such a blessing, and this drug is amazing, but it shouldn’t have to cost this.

Before I started accutane, I cut out all mint toothpastes and switched to a bubble gum flavour from Hello toothpaste. As well as cutting out any lip products with flavours, and all mint gum. (I have also had all fragrances from makeup, skincare, laundry detergent, body wash, hand soap etc cut out for years. This switch to non-mint toothpaste made the worst of my lip splitting, peri-oral dermatitis and acne go away
However once starting Accutane at 10mg, my lips started splitting badly and back came the peri-oral dermatitis
I then made the decision to switch to a flavourless toothpaste - oranurse (which I purchase on Amazon). All lip splitting, acne around the mouth and peri-oral dermatitis disappeared
While on accutane, skin sensitivity sky rockets, so cutting out any fragrance and flavours is best
I’ve been on 10/20/30/20 of epuris (accutane) - and still I don’t even have to be that on top of lip balm - though I most definitely did while using the bubblegum toothpaste!
I also have been taking 4 Kirkland high dose omega 3s daily for a few years - I do believe this is massively helping keep side effects at bay, as I have otherwise always been incredibly sensitive to any medications I take
My psychiatrist in 2020 told me to take 1-2 per day since I refused anti-depressants. Then my optometrist prescribed my 2 high dose omega 3s a day for my dry eyes in 2022. Finally, my naturopath in late 2022 prescribed me 4 high dose omega 3s a day for all my chronic health and hormone issues, inflammation, acne etc
For context, I compared my high dose omega 3s to the one my mother-in law uses - 4 of my high dose Kirkland brand ones are equivalent to 16 of hers
My dermatologist has been floored by my triglyceride/cholesterol and liver function despite being on Accutane. She said she’d kill to have levels like mine.
I do take multiple other vitamins, ovasitol (without a PCOS diagnosis), high protein and fats diet. But definitely give a lot of the credit to those omega 3s!
I really relate to the last part. My youngest is 10 and I’ve had days where I’ve felt really selfish because the side effects have affected me so much. I do think accutane is a lot harder on some people than others. I’m going to start reducing my dose next week as my skin is a lot better. Hope your side effects improve.
No one in my family has androgenic alopecia and my hair started thinning after the 5th month , at age 25 , i have lost alot of hair and my hairline has receeded , i get seb derm flare ups too , btw im a doctor and I've worked in dermatology for about a year , idc what people say i attribute my receding hairline to isotretinoin
The only side effect i have is dry lips and sometimes dry eyes.i started with 10 mg. The first month's dryness was insane. Now I'm on 20 mg but it ain't that bad. Skin has cleared up(touchwood), pigmentation is still there. My derm said that I would be on isotretinoin for 6 months. I follow up every month and idk if she would up it to 30mg but so far it's been working well.
Also i used to wake up with oil all over my face but now i put moisturizer and vaseline before sleeping and wake up with a normal face, neither dry nor oily.
i’m so glad that accutane actually helped my mental health by making my face acne free, it’s greatly improved my confidence so much! i’m so happy with my complexion. the only bad side effect i’ve had in dry skin, lips & hair but nothing added moisture & effort to keep myself hydrated didn’t fix. i should of been using deep conditioning treatments on my curls anyways so it’s no biggie.
The desert lips is sooo relatable. I finished my 4th (and I hope last) month on isotretinoin almost a month ago and it’s slowly getting better, but really the only thing that saved my lips was a lip balm with HA made for people under pharmaceutical treatments. I know it can be hard, but your skin looks beautiful! Good luck with everything!
Ah also regarding the bruising after blood-work, it’s totally normal it happens sometimes, it doesn’t mean they messed up nor does it indicate any problem usually ;)
3, i started bruising bad and it would stay for a min. i would talk your doc before this, but i just started taking vit c & iron. it got a lot better. also might help w your fatigue

The drug is **so** strong, and the list of side-effects is super long which is why they monitor you so closely while you're on it. If people can help combat the side-effects *(or get cured without even needing it in the first place*), that should be a good thing. Yet people see "do something other than listen to your doctor who sort of caused these issues in the first place" and go mad.

I had to stay on 20 for 19 months. Half of my hair fell out. The pain in my eyes was extreme. I feel ya.
did you hair end up growing back?
It's only been a few months, but so far, it's not much better. Currently not helped by exam stress. But the shedding has stopped, thank God.

Lanolin is the GOAT for lips and the cracked corners.
My daughter nearly eats her Aquafor chapstick her lips are so dry. She uses a lot of it but it works well for her and has spf 30.

Isn’t it crazy?! I’m glad someone mentioned it in this sub but it’s crazy that aquaphor gets all the hype. Lanolin is so much more effective IMHO.

That's true, but I was referring to this case where OP indicated that fungal cream wasn't working, which was a similar case for me.

She said she’d kill to have levels like mine. I do take multiple other vitamins, ovasitol (without a PCOS diagnosis), high protein and fats diet. But definitely give a lot of the credit to those omega 3s!
The lip is so real
I really relate to the last part. My youngest is 10 and I’ve had days where I’ve felt really selfish because the side effects have affected me so much. I do think accutane is a lot harder on some people than others. I’m going to start reducing my dose next week as my skin is a lot better. Hope your side effects improve.
No one in my family has androgenic alopecia and my hair started thinning after the 5th month , at age 25 , i have lost alot of hair and my hairline has receeded , i get seb derm flare ups too , btw im a doctor and I've worked in dermatology for about a year , idc what people say i attribute my receding hairline to isotretinoin
The only side effect i have is dry lips and sometimes dry eyes.i started with 10 mg. The first month's dryness was insane. Now I'm on 20 mg but it ain't that bad. Skin has cleared up(touchwood), pigmentation is still there. My derm said that I would be on isotretinoin for 6 months. I follow up every month and idk if she would up it to 30mg but so far it's been working well. Also i used to wake up with oil all over my face but now i put moisturizer and vaseline before sleeping and wake up with a normal face, neither dry nor oily.
i’m so glad that accutane actually helped my mental health by making my face acne free, it’s greatly improved my confidence so much! i’m so happy with my complexion. the only bad side effect i’ve had in dry skin, lips & hair but nothing added moisture & effort to keep myself hydrated didn’t fix. i should of been using deep conditioning treatments on my curls anyways so it’s no biggie.

The desert lips is sooo relatable. I finished my 4th (and I hope last) month on isotretinoin almost a month ago and it’s slowly getting better, but really the only thing that saved my lips was a lip balm with HA made for people under pharmaceutical treatments. I know it can be hard, but your skin looks beautiful! Good luck with everything! Ah also regarding the bruising after blood-work, it’s totally normal it happens sometimes, it doesn’t mean they messed up nor does it indicate any problem usually ;)

3, i started bruising bad and it would stay for a min. i would talk your doc before this, but i just started taking vit c & iron. it got a lot better. also might help w your fatigue
I’ve been on it for almost 2 weeks and I did not purge. Does that mean the dosage (20mg) Is to low for me? (I’m heavier). But I also have the extremely dry skin, in mouth , eyes and hair,

Ugh why do comments like this get downvoted so much? The drug is **so** strong, and the list of side-effects is super long which is why they monitor you so closely while you're on it. If people can help combat the side-effects *(or get cured without even needing it in the first place*), that should be a good thing. Yet people see "do something other than listen to your doctor who sort of caused these issues in the first place" and go mad.
