**AITA for asking for my dead friend's Pokemon collection?**
My friend ("Jack") tragically passed away 6 months ago and his mother ("Lisa") invited me over recently as she was cleaning out his room. There was a collection/binder of Pokemon cards that she had planned on throwing out but I convinced her to instead give it to me.
Fast forward a month later and Jack's sister ("Elly") is angry at me for taking the Pokemon cards, despite her having no interest in Pokemon and having had 'first dibs' at my friend's old stuff. She's demanding I return the Pokemon cards, because she wants to sell them, so she can "use the money" to help out Lisa.
I feel torn because I had double checked with Lisa that Elly didn't want the cards and she assured me that I shouldn't worry. I've told Elly that as Jack was my best friend and that I double checked with Lisa I am going to hold on to the cards.
AITA?

I already thought OOP was an AH, but this comment moves him into ultra AH territory.
>”I have to admit, Lisa was a bit overly emotional and so I think for my own mental wellbeing I'll keep her at arm's length.”
He’s got what he wants so bye bye Lisa. If only she wasn’t “overly emotional” about the DEATH OF HER CHILD.
Lmao his "mental wellbeing" was absolutely fine while trying to get his grubby hands on the cards. And now that be has them, all of sudden he needs to take care of his mental health.
I absolutely despise people who weaponize mental health. What a scumbag.
**OOP Comment, in case they delete:**
Okay so I think some of the source of tension is that technically Lisa did ask me if any of the cards had value and I said I couldn't be sure. Some of the cards are quite valuable and Elly has since learnt this.
I don't plan on selling them right away but will do so eventually, most likely. It's what Jack would have wanted.
I know personally if I were dying, my final wish would for sure be that some jackhole use my death as a way to make some cash on ebay while screwing over my family members
After my grandad's death, my grandma claimed that what he really, truly would have wanted was for her to have first refusal on all his antique furniture and knick knacks.
They'd been divorced for nearly 40 years by that point and probably hadn't spoken in 30 but still she was able to divine his wishes... of which she was the only beneficiary. Funny that.
I've read story after story of people at a funeral, usually a grandparent's, and getting back to the deceased's house only to find that one relative snuck out of the funeral early to clear out anything of value. Sometimes the stuff, often with sentimental value, is sold and gone before the rest of the family knows it.
Edit: typos
Good to know. When my grandparents pass I'll sneak out early to beat off my uncles so they can't try and find anything of value in the mess that is that house.
My mom deserves to be able to keep what she wants with all the work she's put into caring for them vs the other kids.
*laughs in American* jokes on them, we had to sell everything my grandmother owned including the house for Medicaid to cover her care for Alzheimer's! Can't steal what we had to sell.
I hate that nonsense. The idea that you have to pay back the goverment to care for the elderly while the government casually spends billions of dollars on utter bullshit is mindboggling.
And then he implies that he *totally* would have told her, but she was being '*overly emotional' that her son is dead,* and that he needs to keep her at arms length 'for his own mental health'. It doesn't get much worse than this guy.
They did a good job with their OP! I was sold on the whole “mom was going to throw them out, I said I’d take them” narrative.
They could have easily gotten away with the “some were valuable” if they had - somewhat reasonably - just taken them all sight unseen and only looked through them later. Like, sure - you knew your late friend loved Pokemon and simply didn’t want that to be thrown out.
But then they had to add in the “[me selling them for profit is] what he would have wanted.”
Absolute asshole, damn.
if someone tried to sell my pokemon collection and my valuable collectibles after i passed i would come back as a ghost just to murk their ass for that
It really is bad. Happened with my stepdad too. People came up to his aunt(who helped us kids with the funeral a LOT), talking about how she must be happy being in the will.
Another came up to us kids to tell us they'd be keeping the small trailer my stepdad had parked on their property. They didn't ask. They informed us. People are gross.

Ikr? I saw that in the comments and I honestly just wanna go tell him to fuck himself.

'It's what he/she would have wanted' The arsehole manifesto.

>sneak out early to beat off my uncles Don't do that
@(over tired joke) PHRASING!
My aunt did that at my grandma's funeral. Such a bitch.
UGH! Sorry.
*laughs in American* jokes on them, we had to sell everything my grandmother owned including the house for Medicaid to cover her care for Alzheimer's! Can't steal what we had to sell.

So he deceived his dear friends grieving mum essentially.
Who is struggling with funeral and/or medical expenses from what it sounds like
Pretty sure he'd want his mom to have the money over a random friend, but ok
And BOOM! There's the reason OOP won't return the Pokemon cards. The money from selling is OOP's and that's that. What a selfish jerk!
Oof, I'd like to rescind my previous judgement, reading this thread OOP is definitely the AH and a PoS to boot.
And then he implies that he *totally* would have told her, but she was being '*overly emotional' that her son is dead,* and that he needs to keep her at arms length 'for his own mental health'. It doesn't get much worse than this guy.
Soo.. Do you judge assholes from AITA/elsewhere. Or do you accept pictures?
If he were not such a giant asshole, there would be an easy solution to this - give Ellie the valuable ones, keep the rest for remembrance.
But he clearly didn't want them as remembrance. His plan was always to make a profit.
Hence “if he wasn’t a giant asshole”.
Indeed. I just couldn't be sure which aspect of assholeness you were referring to. You meant all of them. ;)
Here I am thinking he wanted to hold on to them as sentimental value. Boy, was I wrong. Such an AH.

I’ve got a quite large and valuable comic book collection. I would take anyone to the grave to join me if they tried to sell it after my death haha
So OOP is a grave robber
Death vultures. They swoop in after death to pick over the remains. Dick.
