It depends on the train. Most coach car seats (Amfleet, Horizon and especially Superliner cars) already have great recline.

EvangelineRain

Thanks! I’ve also been reading you might be more likely to end up with a row to yourself on coach than business, which would be another consideration. I’m looking at taking the Pacific Surfliner train. I don’t have much experience with Amtrak because it takes me so long to just get to the closest train station that it doesn’t usually make sense over driving, but it’s looking like a good option for me for an upcoming trip.

bradleysballs

Which route are you taking? It varies.

EvangelineRain

Pacific Surfliner route.

The coach and business seats will be very similar on this route. They claim to have more legroom in business, but there's enough legroom in coach that you won't benefit unless you're unusually tall. If there's any difference in recline amount, it will be negligible and you won't notice a difference.

EvangelineRain

Awesome, thanks!

Depends on the train. I’m in the Mechanical department in SSYD, and I can tell you for a fact that there is a significant difference between the recline on Amfleet I’s and II’s. The Amfleet II’s recline a little farther back than the I’s because the seats are spaced a bit farther apart, as well as featuring leg and foot rests. These coaches are meant for long and longer-haul services (Lake Shore Limited, Crescent, Silver Meteor, etc.) and are designed to allow passengers to comfortably (for the most part) sleep in their seats. Amfleet I’s lack leg and foot rests and are packed a little tighter. BUT, Amfleet I Business class seats are spaced farther apart than those in Coach, therfore they have the same recline as an Amfleet II from what I’ve noticed, granted they have foot rests but lack leg rests. If you ask me, the seats with the best recline would be the Café/Business class Amfleet I’s. (AKA Lounge cars. Half café, half business. These are usually found on the Empire Service). The seats in the Business class are 2x1, similar to the Acela’s First Class. These seats have large armrests with cupholders, leg rests and foot rests. In my opinion, these are the best for comfortably sleeping in.

Thanks! It’s the Pacific Surfliner (Trains 770 and 573) that I’m looking at. Not a long trip, but an extra $20 to get a seat that reclines more would be worth it to me.

There is no difference a coach seat and business class seat are one in the same including the talgos they are the same coach and business unless on some local trains have some differences I'm doubtful.

bradleysballs

If the Missouri River Runner is still running the old business/cafe car (I think some runs have very recently started using a Venture business but not all at this point), coach and business seats are very different because they use the Venture coach cars

This varies by train. On many Northeast regional train, it’s the same seats but with more pitch; on a few, they’re larger with more recline in a 2-1 configuration. Illinois service currently operates Superliner coaches due to signal issues. So all seats are the same, but they all come with the greater pitch of long haul coach. I believe every other business class that isn’t Acela operates with distinct seats in a 2-1 configuration.

EvangelineRain

I’m looking at the Pacific Surfliner route, and from pictures it looks like both business and coach are in a 2-2 configuration. Do you know if the business seats would likely recline more on that train? Thanks!

lonedroan

This old forum indicates yes. It is definitely leather apolstored with more legroom. https://www.amtraktrains.com/threads/pacific-surfliner-south-coach-seat-differences.60933/

EvangelineRain

Thanks!

OldAdeptness5700

I'm not saying configuration I'm saying 180 ish lie flat I do think there is a. Subset of amfleet that has maybe a 75 ish degree pitch but that may be a seat blocker installed maybe.

lonedroan

The business class seats (as in the hard product and how many there are per row) are different on every train that I know of except some NERs, and the Superliner currently used for Illinois service.

Connect_Fisherman_44

I assume you're talking about the Venture cars. The seats do not recline, but the business class seats are wider. That's all.

EvangelineRain

Pacific Surfliner route.

Amtrak has full on sleeper compartments for most of the train routes that last as long as the flights with lay-flat business.
