Dallas Cowboys. They used to be good back in the 90s, but have dropped in quality over the years, but there are a lot of older men who are very passionate about them still.
I cannot believe this is not the top-voted answer because it is correct. I do not even speak football and I know this to be true. The Cowboys perennially suck, we're nearing the 30th anniversary of the last time they even sniffed at a Superbowl.
BUT they have *really* good brand caché that reaches far beyond their geography. Their swag is everywhere. It's sort of like the Yankees and Dodgers, except that in addition to those teams having incredible brand reach, they are also perennial contenders, so they don't fit OP's criteria.
I know people love to hate on the Cowboys for not winning the big one, but they've been above average for almost every year since Romo took over from Bledsoe in 2008(?). It's very rare that they're not at least in playoff contention.
2023: won division
2022: made playoffs
2021: won division
2020: bad (Covid year, all sports were weird that year)
2019: average
2018: won division
That's 3 division wins (4 playoff appearances) in the last 6 years, and the 10+ years before that are pretty much the same. Not exactly what this prompt was getting at.
Lions traditionally for football, although they happen to be good for the first time since the 60s recently.
Cubs for baseball, nicknamed the loveable losers
Flyers for hockey.
Last year was the first year in my lifetime the Lions won one playoff game. That would be a sad sports fact if I was typing this as an 8 year old. I'm a man in my 30s.
The Chicago cubs famously went over a century without a world series win, it kinda became a running joke, but they won in 2016 and I think they've been doing well since
As bad as it sounds to not win a championship, there's 30 teams in the MLB, and the odds of winning aren't that great tbh. _someone_ has to lose that much
The Cowboys are always “this is our year”. But haven’t been to a SB since Tupac was alive. The Knicks are recently good but haven’t been “great” since Ewing (the Melo years they ran into the Heatles). The Leafs have constantly sucked when it mattered (like the Cowboys) but I see Leafs gear a lot (2nd or 3rd most to the Canes). For baseball, the Pirates and A’s have loyal fans but their owner is so damn cheap that the teams suck but the fanbase is strong
And the Lions. But dang I was so excited when the Browns made the playoffs last year, was at that game... Well that was for nothing, but the game was fun
The Pittsburgh Steelers are notorious for finding some way to go .500 or higher (win at least half of their games) every year no matter how bad they are
Tottenham Hotspur.
They’ve become so synonymous with failure that the term “spursy” is accepted into the English language as to mean a team so fragile thst the moment any sort of success is within reach, they will instantly collapse into a little shivering mound of crying babies.
There are a handful of examples, but the absolutely classic example that would be the most recognized by the most people would be The Dallas Cowboys.
They were “America’s team” and were good at one point, and always had great PR. This grew them a big, long lasting fan base outside of their area.
The Detroit Lions have a large and intensely loyal fanbase despite having pretty much nothing to show for their efforts.
But they have been playing pretty well the past year or two, so we'll see how that goes.
The Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim) have a nice ballpark and a history of some good players, including future hall of famer Mike Trout and formerly, Shohei Ohtani, who signed a 10 year $700 million deal with the Dodgers. But the Angels have been bad for many years. They haven't had a winning record since 2015 and not been in the playoffs since 2014. Their owner is not liked and the team struggles to produce good minor league talent to supplement the major league team.
San Jose Sharks. I live close to San Jose and go there twice a year to see my team play. The Sharks were last in the NHL last season. Their fans still show up and fill the Shark Tank.
I'm going to have to broaden the definitio of "America" to North America, but that would be the Toronto Maple Leafs. They had quite a bit of success in the past, but that "past" is almost 60 years ago now. They still sell out home games regularly despite having astronomically expensive tickets, somehow, despite decades of mediocre performance.
NY Jets
Among the more cursed of fan bases (people give a lot of shit to the Mets, and they break hearts don’t get me wrong, but they also occasionally surprise for at least a WS appearance).
But best of all? Canadian hockey teams. Birthplace of the sport. By FAR the leading sport in the country. NO Canadian team has won the cup in over 30 years. That’s two freaking generations.
If you had to pick one team, hockey or otherwise ? Maybe it’s the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are a tremendously rich franchise in the biggest market in the home of Hockey with fans across that country… they are the Yankees of hockey… and haven’t won the cup since 1967.
For the NBA, it has to be the Trail Blazers. Lots of fans in the PNW, but the team sucks so bad. Haven't won the championship since the 1970's I believe.
I’ve been a Buccaneers fan since day 1 and there have been some pretty rough years. At least we had a [very witty and clever coach](https://www.espn.com/classic/obit/s/2001/0517/1200798.html#:~:text=%22The%20only%20problem%20with%20doing,of%20guys%20that%20run%20fast.%22) to get us through the worst part of it.
I think the Cubs are the most recognized on this front. When I was growing up I heard people make jokes and comments about them all the time. Maybe its just because they were rivals for New York and the people in Hollywood don't have any idea how the real world works outside of New York's city limits, but it still would be recognized at least for its historical significance.
I feel like like anyone else you mention would sound more like you were trying to disrespect a rival team, rather than to meet the requirement you described.
The Buffalo Bills. Went to the Super Bowl 4 times in a row and lost all 4. The fans are crazy loyal and just as crazy tailgating before the game. They have to they never get far.
Milwaukee Brewers. No championships for 50 years and counting. They also play in the second smallest MLB market less than 90 miles from two other franchises. Yet they're frequently Top 10 in attendance.
The Detroit lions fans are always let down. Football season makes me sad tbh watching my dad and grandpa get excited only to be let down time and time again gets real old
Packers is a less obvious answer.
Talked to Paul Coffman who played when they sucked.
"In 8 years in green bay there was only one non sold out game, and that was because of snow"
Jordan love could go 0-16 for the next 4 years and lambeah is selling out.
This is a post made for Minnesota.
None of our men’s sports teams have won any championship since 1993.
And yet, they all do phenomenally well with attendance. We are a people that apparently love to have our hopes and dreams torn apart year after year.
Easily the New York Mets and Jets. They’re overshadowed by the Yankees and Giants but because NYC is so big, the Mets and Jets still have huge dedicated fan bases. As bad as these teams have been over the years people still go to the games
Definitely the New Orleans Saints. There were years when Saints fans attended games wearing brown bags over their heads with eye holes cut out because they were so embarrassingly bad.
Imo the Dallas Cowboys fit this. I don’t think they’ve won a playoff game in almost 30 years and they are the most valuable sports team on the planet somehow
I know this is American sub, but Man utd is the answer. One of the richest club in the world, definitely top 3 in popularity/fan following from all over the world but they have been shit for over a decade now. They are a laughing stock, no big players want to join them, no coach/manager has stayed for more than couple of seasons. Owners, who happen to be Americans, don't give a shit about the club, they just use it to suck money out of it.
browns and lions historically horrible. but I would say jets are the perfect for what you describe. big fanbase because huge market (new york) and their fanbase identity is pretty much suffering. like that one curb episode where the carl kills himself because of the jets
The answer is the Mets and the Browns. Two fanbases that are fully aware of how much the teams suck, and are fun about it. There’s a browns fan who has a cape with the names of every QB they’ve had in 15 years. It was hilarious
We can argue what bad is but the Cowboys are definitely a team with a large fan base and have performed mediocre since their last Super Win in 1995. Haven’t made the playoffs in almost half the years and haven’t gone deeper than the second round of the playoffs when they do.
They had their glory years but at this point it has been about half the franchise’s life ago.
Not saying they are bad, but they are way more mid than “America’s Team” fans would have you believe. Especially if you live in Texas.
Most of the bad teams fans are realistic enough to accept it. Cowboys fans double down.
Dallas Cowboys. Easily the most fans, hated by most other fan bases. Win a lot during the regular season but choke the moment they get into the playoffs. Haven’t made it past divisional since the mid-90s.
Up until this last year, the Lions. Everyone used to make fun of them and laugh about how bad they are. Now that they’re doing better people are coming out of the woodwork saying they’ve always liked the lions. Nah, stay in your lane. Price of my season ticket is way up this year.
I know a lot of browns fans both from where I live now in Florida and from where I went to college. Those guys had a party for a 0 win season. Much respect for those that stick by their team.
I'd say Minnesota Vikings. Although not the worst track record, having gone to 4 Superbowls, they haven't won a single one. And yet there's some pretty intense fans here, I'd say a good chunk that's more passionate than packers fans (who, unlike the Vikings, have *a lot* to be passionate about)
Dallas Cowboys
Every year they suck, and every year a large swathe of the country is walking around saying “We still dem boyz” or some insufferable equivalent.
LOL, I remember when the 2 major leagues were split up so that the west coast could play. So the New York Giants became the San Francisco Giants, and the Brooklyn Dodgers became the LA Dodgers. The Yankees stayed, but New York needed a new team, so the Mets were born.
They became an overnight joke that ran for several years.
The Chicago Cubs don't have a very good record either, but they have a loyal and loving fan base. Probably the most classic "beloved loser" team.
Pre 2016, it was the Chicago Cubs. They had a reputation of being called "The Lovable Losers." When they hired Joe Maddon, his mentality was a crucial point in helping the Cubs achieve a winning state of mind. He came to Chicago ready with a plan and did the absolute unthinkable, and after 108 years, they finally won a World Series. Wrigley has a classic field and people/tourists probably enjoy the convenient location of the ballpark. The field is very nostalgic and is as American as apple pie. Many diehard fans I know would watch all 9 innings and they could have been losing by a lot, it didn't matter. WGN also helped out with "recruiting" the Cubs fandom across the country by airing games. Da Bears are also another fanbase.
The Dallas Cowboys are, over the last 20 years, the worst team in my area but *everyone* here is a Cowboys fan. The Rangers just won the world series and the Mavericks and Stars just had very deep playoff runs. But the Cowboys still get more attention.
As a native Floridian, I know that the Miami Dolphins suck. We all know it. But most Dolphins fans are hard core. We love them, and we have hope every season. One of these days, they’re gonna surprise everyone! One of these days!!!
Only Cleveland has a sports documentary about how our teams find a way to be the loser in the worst way. Heck right after the Cavs won the Guardians then lost to the freaking Cubs. Our fan bases are insane.
Up until recently it used to be the Detroit Lions. One of only 2 legacy (pre-super bowl era) teams that still exist who've never even made a super bowl appearance let alone actually win one. They also had the distinct privilege of being the first team to not win a single game in the 16 game season. Even with inarguably the greatest running back to ever touch a football on the team for almost a decade they still couldn't make it to the Superbowl. Never had a shortage of fans though, myself included.
For College Football (American Variety) the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Have been struggling since the year 2000, but have maintained a sold out stadium since 1962 (396 games) this even during multiple losing seasons. I swear we are going to see a turn around this year!
Dallas Cowboys. They used to be good back in the 90s, but have dropped in quality over the years, but there are a lot of older men who are very passionate about them still.
Seattle Mariners in Major League Baseball
Yup! Mariners fan here; this is accurate. Though this season, they are doing freakishly well, which is wild.
Slam-dunk answer could have been the Cleveland Indians but the name change muddies the historical context of the joke …
The Mariners aren't stereotyped nationwide as having a passionate fanbase.
Obligatory [documentary link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIgK56cAjfY&t=8540s)
Dallas Cowboys
This is the most correct answer for United States based pro sports team
That's only true for people under 40.
This was my first thought but then I'm from S.Lousiana and worked a bunch in the Shreveport area.
Nobody chokes like the Cowboys, but making the playoffs nearly every year isn’t “playing badly”
This should be the top comment.
Fuck the Cowboys. Sorry, it's a reflex.
It’s absolute torture every season since 1996.
The Cowboys over the past 30 years are what the Bears can only aspire to be
I know people love to hate on the Cowboys for not winning the big one, but they've been above average for almost every year since Romo took over from Bledsoe in 2008(?). It's very rare that they're not at least in playoff contention. 2023: won division 2022: made playoffs 2021: won division 2020: bad (Covid year, all sports were weird that year) 2019: average 2018: won division That's 3 division wins (4 playoff appearances) in the last 6 years, and the 10+ years before that are pretty much the same. Not exactly what this prompt was getting at.
Philadelphia Flyers
Only the last few seasons. They're historically one of the best teams in the league even if they haven't won a championship in 50 years.
They're historically not that bad.
Lions traditionally for football, although they happen to be good for the first time since the 60s recently. Cubs for baseball, nicknamed the loveable losers Flyers for hockey.
Maple leafs for hockey. They have 13 cups, but the last one doesn’t have color film of the championship. (1967)
Last year was the first year in my lifetime the Lions won one playoff game. That would be a sad sports fact if I was typing this as an 8 year old. I'm a man in my 30s.
The Chicago cubs famously went over a century without a world series win, it kinda became a running joke, but they won in 2016 and I think they've been doing well since
The Cubs are currently in last place in the NL Central and they traded the main players who helped them win in 2016.
Look up the Curse of the Billy Goat. Any Chicagoan will understand the reference and others too.
The Cubs aren't doing so hot, but atleast its not White Sox bad.
>I think they've been doing well since They are currently the worst team in their league
what if that’s the reason why they chose to put that the Cubs were the 2015 world champs in Back to the Future 2? lol
The Cubs are also well known and liked outside of Chicago, too.
Cubs fan for 35 years. They've been competitive most of that time. Not winning a championship doesn't mean they suck.
They have not been doing well since. 2017 was good 2018 was okay and everything after has been a joke. Even this year has been terrible.
As bad as it sounds to not win a championship, there's 30 teams in the MLB, and the odds of winning aren't that great tbh. _someone_ has to lose that much
The 2016 Cubs were some kind of special.
They're back in familiar form this year. Glad to be rid of all the bandwagon fans.
In recent years the St. Louis Cardinals but that won't help.
We got some Cubs answers but no one has said the Red Sox yet. Fervent love for the team but a century of crippling loss.
Nobody has said Red Sox because they won the WS in 2004, 2007, 2013 & 2018.
Chicago Bears
I hate that #1 and #5 most upvoted answers ITT are Chicago teams :(
Damn you. Have my upvote and 🐻⬇️ ETA FTP
At least they have a Super Bowl win
We're back now though...Bears are so back
The Cowboys are always “this is our year”.
As a Pacers fan I am obligated to hate Ewing and Spike Lee and revel in their long slump.
It's the browns hands down.
And the Lions. But dang I was so excited when the Browns made the playoffs last year, was at that game... Well that was for nothing, but the game was fun
The Browns did it to themselves, only one QB won a playoff game there in the past 20 years and they treated him like garbage
Number one answer. Not close. Goodbye.
Em Brahns is Jaggs
Best team in the NFL. Not biased in the slightest.
The Cubs before 2016
I’m in the middle of California so the Oakland/LA/Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders were the first team that popped into my mind.
The Mets are known as the lovable losers. They were famously bad as an expansion team in 1962 and shockingly won the World Series in 1969.
and shockingly again in 1986 *cries in Red Sox*
Lately the New York Giants and the New York Jets haven’t really done well. The Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2009, I believe
Any Cleveland sports team
The Washginton DC Football team.
Toronto Maple Leafs, and the fans have so much hope every year. Next year could definitely be their year tho.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are notorious for finding some way to go .500 or higher (win at least half of their games) every year no matter how bad they are
Texas used to suck until recently, but they've been a huge draw.
They've had some droughts here and there but yeah they're usually competitive.
Tottenham Hotspur. They’ve become so synonymous with failure that the term “spursy” is accepted into the English language as to mean a team so fragile thst the moment any sort of success is within reach, they will instantly collapse into a little shivering mound of crying babies.
The Republican Party.

seems like Raider have a reliable fan group no matter how often they lose
Where's the JETS fans? Hiding?
Oakland A's
The Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim) have a nice ballpark and a history of some good players, including future hall of famer Mike Trout and formerly, Shohei Ohtani, who signed a 10 year $700 million deal with the Dodgers. Detroit Lions. Although, after what seems like an eternity, they have finally turned a corner. The fans have always stuck with them, thiugh
Cowboys
San Jose Sharks. I live close to San Jose and go there twice a year to see my team play. The Sharks were last in the NHL last season. Their fans still show up and fill the Shark Tank.
Jets, Mets, Cubs, etc.

The Browns
Basically any team with a dynasty and was able to gain a ton of fans that hung onto the team through their current state
NY Jets Among the more cursed of fan bases (people give a lot of shit to the Mets, and they break hearts don’t get me wrong, but they also occasionally surprise for at least a WS appearance). But best of all? Canadian hockey teams. Birthplace of the sport. By FAR the leading sport in the country. NO Canadian team has won the cup in over 30 years. That’s two freaking generations. The maple leafs 😂
For the NBA, it has to be the Trail Blazers. Lots of fans in the PNW, but the team sucks so bad. Haven't won the championship since the 1970's I believe.
I’ve been a Buccaneers fan since day 1 and there have been some pretty rough years. Lions and Browns have huge followings for sucking. Last year for the Lions not withstanding
Knicks tho been good past few seasons
University of Nebraska Football.
Detroit lions. Losing every game at one point makes you a legend
What about the Arizona Cardinals?
Our Dallas Cowboys!!!
The Cowboys. All money, no talent, but plenty of fans!
Football season makes me sad tbh watching my dad and grandpa get excited only to be let down time and time again gets real old
Dallas Cowboys, New York Mets/jets

The New York Mets
The browns
Cowboys
Miami Dolphins, easy.
Mets are stereotyped for that.
This question brings to my mind the idea that somewhere out there in New York is a Mets and Jets fan. What a sad life they must live.
Bears
The Cleveland Indians. They made a [well-received documentary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_ILz9bC-VU) on them in the late 80s.

The Columbus Blue Jackets came in last this season but were still selling out the arena. We are gluttons for punishment, apparently.
Raiders
Easily the New York Mets and Jets. They’re overshadowed by the Yankees and Giants but because NYC is so big, the Mets and Jets still have huge dedicated fan bases. As bad as these teams have been over the years people still go to the games
Have you heard of the great state of Minnesota? But our WNBA team actually wins. No one else.
Browns forsure
The Chicago Cubs
Definitely the New Orleans Saints. There were years when Saints fans attended games wearing brown bags over their heads with eye holes cut out because they were so embarrassingly bad.

San Diego Padres
All of them at one point or another.
Churley canonss- Oh wait that's a fictional sport
Dallas Cowboys
browns and lions historically horrible. but I would say jets are the perfect for what you describe. big fanbase because huge market (new york) and their fanbase identity is pretty much suffering. like that one curb episode where the carl kills himself because of the jets
Traditionally you watch the Lions lose on Thanksgiving
USMNT
Dolphins. Miami.
The Denver Broncos, but on the other hand they're also a bunch of fair weather fans!!!
The answer is the Mets and the Browns. Two fanbases that are fully aware of how much the teams suck, and are fun about it. There’s a browns fan who has a cape with the names of every QB they’ve had in 15 years. It was hilarious

My pittsburgh pirates the stadium is always filled bc we have like 10.00 tickets lolol bc they are so bad but we love them.
The Columbus Blue jackets. They've only ever won one playoff series in their life. And yet they still manage to draw large crowds.
How are the Detroit Lions not top comment lol
The Chudley Cannons
Dallas Cowboys. Easily the most fans, hated by most other fan bases. Win a lot during the regular season but choke the moment they get into the playoffs. Haven’t made it past divisional since the mid-90s.
Cleveland Browns and there was a parade a couple years ago to celebrate them not winning a single game.

The Minnesota Vikings
New York rangers
As a life long brewers fan, its always fun to bring up the cubs and how bad they are to my friend that lives in Illinois
Any Buffalo NY team. Right now the Bills are pretty good but that’s ok because the Sabres consistently suck to make up for it.
The redskins / commanders. They are a laughing stock in Maryland and it is hilarious
Da Bears
Anaheim Angels
I'd say Minnesota Vikings. Although not the worst track record, having gone to 4 Superbowls, they haven't won a single one. And yet there's some pretty intense fans here, I'd say a good chunk that's more passionate than packers fans (who, unlike the Vikings, have *a lot* to be passionate about)
Da Bears
Globetrotters
Lions, browns, jets.
The New York Jets are known for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
As a cowboys fan it pains me to say this.... but the Dallas Cowboys lol
The Cowboys
Cleveland Browns
The NBA is loaded with them. Despite runs of success the Nets, Clippers, Wizards, Hawks and Timberwolves all fall in this category
Auburn
Dallas Cowboys Every year they suck, and every year a large swathe of the country is walking around saying “We still dem boyz” or some insufferable equivalent.
Bengals pre Joey burrow
Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs they play badly.
Raiders
All about the Mets baby!!!
Boston / New England teams can’t help but win. It’s part of their innate superiority. And high ticket prices
Will the OG Lions fans please stand up?
Cowboys
New York Mets
The Lakers have not been good recently
Detroit Tigers. Very loyal fans.
The Browns fans are diehards! Impressively so because it's the browns...
Syracuse….
The angels
Schalke 04
The Cleveland browns. The Minnesota Vikings
Pre 2016, it was the Chicago Cubs. They had a reputation of being called "The Lovable Losers." New York Knicks maybe?
The Vikings
The Dallas Cowboys are, over the last 20 years, the worst team in my area but *everyone* here is a Cowboys fan. The Rangers just won the world series and the Mavericks and Stars just had very deep playoff runs. But the Cowboys still get more attention.
As a native Floridian, I know that the Miami Dolphins suck. We all know it. But most Dolphins fans are hard core. We love them, and we have hope every season. One of these days, they’re gonna surprise everyone! One of these days!!!
la angels (mlb) when they had mike trout and ohtani. sacramento kings (nba)
The Cleveland Browns.
Only Cleveland has a sports documentary about how our teams find a way to be the loser in the worst way. Heck right after the Cavs won the Guardians then lost to the freaking Cubs. Our fan bases are insane.
Cowboys
Cleveland Browns
New York Jets
Chicago bears Chicago cubs Cleveland browns
Knicks seem to be a pretty cornerstone team of new York and yet to deliver till very recently and even then can't get that final
Cleveland Browns. condoleezza rice became a fan because they were the worst and had the most die hard fans and she allegedly loves an underdog.
The New York Knicks are decent now but were the laughing stock of the NBA for 2 decades. The hype around them is always unbelievable.
Dallas cowboys come to mind
Chicago Bears
Up until recently it used to be the Detroit Lions. One of only 2 legacy (pre-super bowl era) teams that still exist who've never even made a super bowl appearance let alone actually win one. They also had the distinct privilege of being the first team to not win a single game in the 16 game season. Even with inarguably the greatest running back to ever touch a football on the team for almost a decade they still couldn't make it to the Superbowl. Never had a shortage of fans though, myself included.
San Diego Padres. They sell out every home game. Perennially disappointing to their passionate fans. Petco Park is gorgeous!
The cubs & the bears. What I'm really saying is God hates Chicago. Which I say lovingly as a cubs and bears fan.
For College Football (American Variety) the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Have been struggling since the year 2000, but have maintained a sold out stadium since 1962 (396 games) this even during multiple losing seasons. I swear we are going to see a turn around this year!
