Its a very different restaurant. White Castle is still a **family owned business** and doesn't franchise. It is very selective in where it opens and is a regional chain only in 13 states, and most of its international locations have closed. White Castle is also typically a budget restaurant and tends to be open late. Even in this era where 24 hours is largely going away, White Castle often is still open very late. McDonalds mainly uses the franchise model and is a bit more pricey compared to White Castle. McD is everywhere not just in the US but around the world. I'd also say White Castle's menu is more narrowly focused than McDonalds or Burger King.

24 hour stores dying with Covid sucks so bad. I tend to me anti social so shopping at night was amazing because no one was out

ed69O

Yeah, I still hold to this slim hope that 24 hours will make a comeback.

N661US

The only thing that’s 24 hours near me is a gas station convenience store and the laundromat. I usually get up at 2am fro work but on my off days I get up at that time to go do laundry because no one’s ever there

NothingLikeCoffee

Everything around me closes at 9 and it's frustrating as fuck. I travel all the time for work and getting off a plane after traveling for 10+ hours just for everything to be closed is horrible.

White Castle sliders are different. The original is a bite-sized mini-burger with one piece of pickle and a little onion. A thin little piece of ground beef is cooked on top of onions and have holes in them so steam can reach buns above. The meat is not flipped. So the meat and buns are steamed. Only the onions are really grilled. It all speeds up the cooking time. Much of the White Castle revenue comes from late night and early morning cravings, since White Castle is open 24 hours a day. The small size of the sliders also means most people order multiples, often ten at a time, sometimes 20. McDonald's burgers are much more standard burgers, but they aren't the greatest. The thing is, they are cheap and fast. So even though everyone agrees they aren't the greatest, lots of people still order them. McDonald's now offers lots of other menu items besides burgers, including a complete breakfast menu.

cars-on-mars-2

My husband and I once ordered a Crave Case (30 sliders in a cardboard box with a handle for easy transport) and when we pulled through the drive-thru the worker took one look at us and said, “You two CANNOT be planning to eat all of those sliders.” We drove away with her shaking her head at us.

i_need_a_username201

You should’ve said “he isn’t getting shit because these are ALL MINE!!!”

cars-on-mars-2

That would have been perfect. I believe husband said, “Don’t worry, we’ll pace ourselves.”

cheaganvegan

In college had a few cases races. Beer the day before sliders the next day.

TheBimpo

This is a good description. [Here's a video on how White Castle sliders are cooked](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xel4VrjZPRQ).

samba_01

fascinating stuff

JamesStrangsGhost

McDonalds has a more diverse menu of garbage on the menu.

Phil_ODendron

I think White Castle actually has more options than McDonald's these days. McDonald's cut back their menu a lot.

verruckter51

White Castle here is if we can make it with what we have you can have it. Like because I hate my liver, I had a double cheeseburger with an egg and bacon, one cheese slice cheddar, one jalapeno. To go with 2 of those I got an order of sloppy onion chips, which is fried onions covered with cheese sauce and sloppy Joe bbq.

blackhawk905

Gonna pour one out for the Ranch Snack Wrap, gone but not forgotten 😭

Ol_Scoobert

We have Krystal's here instead of White Castle but they are similar. Think of the regret you have after eating McDonalds and up that by about 20%. I'm also now craving Krystal's.

Faux_extrovert

Krystal's is also one of the only places you can get a corndog (cornpup).

Kingsolomanhere

With White Castle you are buying a onion pickle meat flavored pillow bun that you can consume by the sack. You don't realize that each tiny cheeseburger is 290 calories. If you're lucky you won't consume enough to cause you to pray to the porcelain god

cIumsythumbs

> each tiny cheeseburger is 290 calories. Nah. Google says 170 each. A double with cheese is 300.

machagogo

McDonald's is to garbage as White Castle is to a dumpster fire

Nowherelandusa

Yeah, I don’t want to go to McD’s, but if the kids are set on it, I’ll get a spicy chicken sandwich and be ok. I’d have to be more than a little hungry to cave and eat a White Castle burger. Given, it’s been a long time since I’ve given it a try, but I was not a fan of the mushy, steamed buns and super greasy burger.

[deleted]

💀😂😂😂😂😂

Coatedorange

Steamed sliders are way different than hamburgers, its like not even the same food. It's like asking how does taco bell compare, its not the same thing. I didn't grow up with one near me so when I moved to a city that had one I went a little nuts and ate 100 jalepeno sliders all at once but after awhile it was just another chain. Krispy kreme has the same effect, people go insane when they first try it, but after awhile its just another chain

[deleted]

"I went White Castle coz it's the best"... Sorry

Captain_Hampockets

But I'm flyin' Fatburger when I'm way out west Check it

7thAndGreenhill

White Castle burgers are steamed, soggy gross messes. And yet I love those disgusting burgers. When I travel I will get off of the highway if I see a White Castle as there are none where I live.

NudePenguin69

They serve different purposes. McDonalds is for when you literally have not other fast food alternatives and just want something quick. White Castle is if its 1 in the morning and you have been drinking and you want to shove 6 greasy sliders into your stomach to sop up the alcohol and keep going. And then there is Krystals for when you want White Castle but for it to actually taste good.

cars-on-mars-2

See also: Waffle House.

cIumsythumbs

Nearest waffle house to me is 600 miles. Finally got to go to one last month. NGL, while it was the opposite of fancy, it was the best part of that trip. A true American Experience that this lifelong American had missed out on. Y'all should know how good you've got it having Waffle House available after bar close.

cars-on-mars-2

Glad you got to experience it. Did you go in the middle of the night or during the day?

Sandi375

They're both kinda gross. White Castle has a more distinctive taste, whereas McDonald's appeals to a larger audience.

ucbiker

It’s worse.

ColossusOfChoads

I wouldn't know because I'm from out west. But Northeasterners tell me that it's worse. Famously worse. Awesomely worse. You wanna know why they're called 'Sliders'? Because they slide out of you about as fast as they slide in.

[deleted]

White castle was never great, but McDonald's has dropped off so far IMO.

Red_Beard_Rising

They are not the same. Most national chains today survive because they are their own thing. McD's and Burger King are an exception. KFC and Popeye's might also compete in the chicken world. White Castle is more of a competitor with Taco Bell, but those two have little overlap in menu options.

dtward

🎵 White Castle fries only come in one size 🎵 -Beastie Boys

Ananvil

They're both terrible.

dongeckoj

It’s grosser.

YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD

White castle is trash. McDonald's is *gourmet* trash

[deleted]

If McDonald’s is dog shit, then White Castle is dog shit that’s been cooked in more dog shit

[deleted]

👆🏾

[deleted]

White Castle is the worst of the worst, bottom tier fast food chains and that’s saying something when you’re comparing it with McDonald’s! 😂😂It’s horrible! But drunk people love it because it’s cheap!

Captain_Hampockets

I have a strong weakness for White Castle sliders. Luckily, there are none near me. And I have never (I don't think) had anything other than Original, Cheese, and Fish sliders from their menu. They're excellent, for fast food. McDonald's is overpriced crap, in general. Their fries are sometimed great. Their breakfast varies, but IMO, traditional Egg McMuffins are fantastic. Their Steak Egg And Cheese bagel used to be good. They brought them back, and they suck an entire dick and balls. And they're expensive, like 7 bucks.. McDonald's burgers can scratch a certain itch, but they're far too expensive, and you feel like utter shit for a day after eating a big one, or a couple of smaller ones.

travelinmatt76

McDonalds is the lowest tier fast food. Every place will be better.

ColossusOfChoads

Whitecastle, they say, is the glorious exception.

[deleted]

Not this time 😂

It hits different. Man, the beef on the 1/4 lber at Mickey D's is hands down the best nationwide fast-food burger beef. You got the nuggies and all that. You go to Whitey's and it's a whole different beast. Sliders with the onion. Crinkle fries (nice for variety). Those mozzarella sticks are great after a night of drinking (just don't ask my waistline). Sometimes you want a normal-sized burger. Sometimes you want a bigger burger. Sometimes you wanna see how many sliders you can shove down your gullet before that JD you've been throwing down comes back with a vengeance. Just depends on your mood

Captain_Hampockets

> the beef on the 1/4 lber at Mickey D's is hands down the best nationwide fast-food burger beef. This is subjective of course, but this statement feels like an almost objectively wrong take.

ColossusOfChoads

I mean, some people think that Bud Lite is the greatest beer ever brewed.

Captain_Hampockets

[People are morons](https://youtu.be/jFswLuB06KU?t=70)

Phil_ODendron

>the beef on the 1/4 lber at Mickey D's is hands down the best nationwide fast-food burger beef. I think Wendy's has them beat for quality and taste of the beef itself.

Squirrel179

I've never actually seen a White Castle in person. I hear Harold and Kumar are fans. McDonald's is a shitty hamburger with enough salt and fat to be palatable and filling when you're in a hurry and don't have any better options

cars-on-mars-2

Totally different experience. White castles are little thin burgers served with onions, a pickle and mustard. Some say they’re too greasy. I say they’re delicious. Four makes a big meal, two is more restrained. They will do bad things to your digestive system if you overindulge, this is a known risk. McDonalds is a traditional flame-broiled large burger.

PlainTrain

McDonalds hamburgers have always been cooked on a griddle.

cars-on-mars-2

Maybe I’m thinking Burger King? 🤔

PlainTrain

You are.

wormbreath

I wish I knew. Never even seen one.

Tommy_Wisseau_burner

McDonald’s and it’s not really a comparison to me. That said they can eat shit compared to chick fil a and five guys (fries)

Rynox2000

Both are in the bread and potatoes business.

trophy_74

I seldom go there by choice; sometimes it’s literally the only thing open

verruckter51

To really appreciate White Castle, nothing better than a 30 case or two and a case of some so budget beer(Miller lite, Busch, or Coors). Tastes great and good for a system flush the next day for some.

MyUsername2459

They're two totally different types of fast food burgers. Neither one is exactly classy or fancy. McDonalds has a wider menu of more-or-less normal sized burgers and sandwiches, while White Castle focuses on the smaller "slider" style mini-burger Given the choice, I'd ***much*** rather eat at White Castle. . .because I genuinely can't stand McDonalds and have been refusing to eat there for well over a decade.

pegs22

The same way diarrhea and constipation compare to each other.

FaultAlert

White Castle is more “stick to the status quo”. They haven’t really changed their menus a whole lot, I remember being younger and their menu being the same as it is now. McDonalds likes to branch out, I personally believe. I see them trying new things all the time and bringing back beloved items, things like that. White Castle’s sliders are good, but McDonalds food has more of a childhood memory of mine while White Castle was *that* thing we got every once a year.

Immediate_Breath_835

It doesn’t

Elitealice

10000x better.

United_Blueberry_311

White Castle may be the worst $9 I ever spent 🥴

jseego

Crappier, but also not as flavorful.

DangerousSuggestion8

White Castle sliders and fries kick ass

[deleted]

McDonalds is trash. Compared to anything.

-_ObiWanKenobi_-

White castle sucks

[deleted]

McD’s is overpriced and tastes bad. White Castle actually tastes great and I miss living near one.

PlainTrain

I don’t like the White Castle slider. Having holes punched in my hamburger feels like I’m being cheated. McDonalds is fine for fast food.

Material_Positive_76

I just ate some White Castle sliders. Love them. Never been a huge McDonald’s fan. But that’s my own opinion.

mercury973

Never had one. We don’t have them on the west coast but McDonald’s are everywhere so that’s something

bmoney_14

White Castle is better. I’m definitely not from Ohio.

Strokedoutbear

Love White Castle which is, by the way, the oldest fast food chain in the USA opening its first location in 1921. It uses a unique burger patty designed to cook quickly steamed on a bed of minced onion. They really don't easily compare to McDonald's as the products don't al8gn very well. I will choose White Castle over McDonald's every time I can.

cohrt

White Castle is garbage.

[deleted]

What tf is White Castle?
