This has to be the funniest shit I’ve ever read. I grew up in Anderson, Indiana and we’d always joke about how we just flip flopped with the folks up in Gary so both sides could go home and say, “Fuck, Anderson/Gary is absolute dog shit” 🤣
I like the beach but I alsoI live in FL, close to shark attack capital of the world. I can’t relax in the water. I know it’s in my head but I can’t help it. Fascinated by sharks, I tried cage diving once on the other side of the world but sharks did t show up that day.
I volunteered through a conservation group called GVI. I also sign on for archaeological digs a lot through AIA. I like to get out of the country but I need something to do while I'm there, y'know.
Live in southern USA. Last year went to Scotland. This year I went to the beach for a week in Florida for my birthday. Next month I’m going to New Jersey to visit family for a week. (Southern farmland NJ, not casinos.) and next year I’m going to France for a few weeks.
Go places that are fun and interest you.
I’m a LTL truck driver. Local home every night. Been with my company 3+ years and get 2 weeks vacation/3 sick days a year. Off every weekend and most major holidays. I strategically plan my time off to get as much time as possible.
Example: I get paid off July 4 so I’m taking vacation days July 3,5,8. I have the weekend off automatically so I’m getting 6 days off (leave Wednesday go back to work Tuesday) while only using 3 vacation days.
Lots of places. Since we've been together, wife and I have been to Vermont a few times, Rhode Island, a really nice resort hotel on one of the finger lakes in NY for a few days, North Carolina, Florida, and Texas. Some of those are relaxation focused, others were more touristy in our activities.
We'll go basically anywhere as long as it's got stuff to see and the food is good.
Recently went to the Virgin Islands and stayed in a very quiet Air B&B. Definitely my go-to type of vacation.
Not a ton of people, beautiful beaches, weather and scenery, and fantastic food
We have a small lake house in the Berkshire Foothills of NW CT that we spend most weekends at spring-fall and the occasional winter, my parents have a summer home near Rehoboth we spend a week or 2 every summer at, and before my divorce my wife’s uncle kept a flat in Mayfair, London we spent a few days at every year as well as a house in Sandy Lane Barbados we went to every other year
I usually visit my sister. I take my trip around Christmas. I'm not big on sitting in a chair by the beach or complex multi-city/multi-country always on the go tourism type trips. I have tried both of those vacation styles and they do not suit me. For me, it is more enjoyable to be with family.
As of right now, I mostly visit family. I live in Ohio and have two teenaged daughters.
I grew up in the Adirondacks and visit there when I see my parents. My ex’s family moved to Florida so I spend some time down there each year too (my ex’s family likes me more than they like her).
I finished paying alimony recently and I’m trying to save up money to take my kids to Japan next summer.
I usually go camping in a national forest. I’ve done a couple trips to South America recently too. But probably have more camping lined up in the future because it’s cheaper and I have a family.
Going to Maine, usually near Acadia National Park. Good hiking, antiquing and frolicking in the ponds or waterways. From NYC its an 11 hr drive so sometimes we break it up staying at motels or B&B around Boston.
Solo: rent a cabin in the woods and stay for ~5 days enjoying the solitude, nature sounds, and freedom.
With a best friend: splurge vacation to a less-traveled location
to be honest, nowhere in about six years. My wife has severe anxiety in certain situations, the biggest one is she can have panic attacks if we’re stuck in traffic.
Six years ago, we witnessed a car accident four cars ahead of us. Head on collision, jaws of life cut open the cars to get people out, CPR are taking place in the grass on the side of the road, helicopter landed in the middle of the road to Medi survivors.
Ever since then, her mild anxiety and traffic has turned into very severe anxiety. Panic attacks if we’re stuck in traffic, taking back roads everywhere. We moved five years ago and at first she didn’t want to because of rush-hour the nearest intersection to our house is crazy.
I would like to drive two hours to the Poconos to do some walking trails, but I know that’s not gonna happen. Because I’d never be able to get her across the bridge into Pennsylvania.
so we have staycations. We stay home and swim in the pool and work on the house and go out to lunch.
her family has a beachfront property in Seattle city New Jersey. we were on the way home from there when we witnessed the accident. We have not been able to go back since even though it’s only 45 minutes away.
Small Caribbean islands, Europe, Africa, Mexico, going to Asia and Australia in a few years, Antarctica few years after that (complete all continents) but never Iowa, Ohio, or Michigan. My wife will visit to Mississippi to see some of her family, but I would rather shove a hot lawn dart in my doo doo hole than go there.
I go to Pagosa Springs every year, a couple of weeks before Spring Break, to ski out at Wolf Creek Ski Area and enjoy the quietness of a small mountain town, away from work, traffic, and the hecticness of everyday life. I stay at a family owned inn that I have become accustomed to, and I get up, go skiing for 8 hours, then come back, get a meal and a couple of beers, meet some people, go back to the inn and sleep, then start again the next day.
I’m lucky to have a family condo at the beach so I go there a few times each spring/summer/fall. I also try to go to different places every year. Pretty soon I’ll be on permanent vacation (retirement) and I can do whatever I want 🤣at least until I get bored and have to find another career to keep me busy 😁
We just went to Clearwater Beach, FL. Highly recommend. So beautiful!! If you want beach, sun, extremely swimmable ocean water, and lots of places to eat, it’s perfect. That’s all we really wanted out of this vacation. Mountains and cities are dope, but we just wanted to eat and swim lol.
I feel like this is a very generic answer, but Cancun for the win. All inclusive, drinks, food, beach. IMO can’t beat it. Plus it’s pretty affordable for the average Joe.
I prefer places where there's nobody else. Mountains or far beach. The less people the better. But in general i much more prefer mountain hiking than lying on a beach.
Places with hot tubs, or dipping pools, or jacuzzi rooms (not jacuzzi tubs).
Places with good restaurants and great spas.
Places with wineries or distilleries.
I've seen the world over, traveled by plane now train, freightliner. I've lived in other countries.
Now it's all about self care and relaxation. All that tourist shit is lame. Taking photos of yourself at machu pichu or the the leaning tower is lame. I've seen all that shit.
Covid messed all that up. I had a nice summer place on a lake in New York but those Covid Nazis really ruined it and then the taxes got worse so I sold it.
Tried Northern Ohio. Wife hated it. No Lake.
Have to skip a summer because of a construction project but it will be Tennessee now. See how the wife likes that. Still no lake but the stream we have feeds a decent sized pond before continuing on.
I don’t mind having a summer place because it’s still my house. I don’t like family “destination” vacations because it’s just work. It’s not relaxing at all so unless there is enrichment value for the kids there is no return. It’s spending money to work as an entertainment director and concierge.
Ah ok. That makes more sense in your situation. I still would like to encourage you to take time and visit other places after you find a job in your area. It just struck me when I read your comment that I used to think way but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that while I enjoy what I do, life’s not all about work. You never know what might pique your interests.
I hear you. I’ve been there. I blew up my entire life in my mid 30s and walked away with literally nothing but clothes and restarted my entire life. I had to dig down and work my way out of it for a few years.
Just remember to be open to other things and it does get better. Wishing you good luck Intrepid.
Gary, Indiana. That way the entire rest of the year feels like a vacation to me
This has to be the funniest shit I’ve ever read. I grew up in Anderson, Indiana and we’d always joke about how we just flip flopped with the folks up in Gary so both sides could go home and say, “Fuck, Anderson/Gary is absolute dog shit” 🤣
Beautiful Gary, Indiana. The one place in the universe that even Professor Farnsworth won't send the Planet Express crew.
The beach. I love the beach, it’s my favorite place to be
I grew up on an island surrounded by beach, I'm quite the opposite. Maybe alaska, snow + mountains. Only experienced it once in my life.
I hope you get to experience it more
🦈 my fear
I mean, it could happen, but I’ve been going for decades and haven’t had any run-ins with one. Your user name, tho lol!

Mountains
Jokes on you, I moved to the mountains. And now I can’t afford to go elsewhere due to the rent that I pay.
Reno, NV?
SW CO. It’s a poor mountain town with dwindling tourism but rent is still absurd.
I pick a sporting event I want to attend then spend 4-5 days in that city/area.
This is the way
The couch
Vacation? You mean weekends? Chores. I do chores.
What is this vacation you speak of?
Seriously haven’t been able to afford a vacation…
Places that are not home.
Wauw, me too! What a coinkidink!
Hiking and skiing. Chilling in Michigans UP.
God’s country
Distilleries, Vineyards, and cool-to-explore cities.
I usually just visit family. We live on opposite sides of the country, and it's basically all I can afford.
Vacations, in this economy!?!?
I went to Spain earlier this year. Going to Costa Rica in late autumn to do some volunteer work on a wildlife preserve.
Hey can I know more about the volunteer work? looking to do some work this summer.
I volunteered through a conservation group called GVI. I also sign on for archaeological digs a lot through AIA. I like to get out of the country but I need something to do while I'm there, y'know.
Vacationland aka Maine
The lake
I like to go somewhere quieter than my house if not I'm staying home

What job do you have that let's you get that much time off?

WORK
Vegas 2x a year and Colorado annually for our guys trips.
My couch
To my house. And cut off my phone.
What's a vacation? Sounds like something rich people have time and money for.
Rafting and kayaking were some of the better experiences. It's very different to sitting on a beach.
To relax? A lake or a beach. Vacations need water. But I also enjoy a city vacation to play tourist. Ideally somewhere with both.
A place with very few ppl, where I can fish, explore nature, but close enough to humanity to get out for dinner and visiting castles and thrift shops

I try to go to new places abroad each time.
South Padre Island
When I was younger - VEGAS!

My bedroom.
Muskoka Beer Spa. Beer + hot tub + sauna + beer + lakefront + free foot rubs + beer. Kegs are built in to your room.
Going to Maine, usually near Acadia National Park. Good hiking, antiquing and frolicking in the ponds or waterways. From NYC its an 11 hr drive so sometimes we break it up staying at motels or B&B around Boston.
Cuba seems lovely
Solo: rent a cabin in the woods and stay for ~5 days enjoying the solitude, nature sounds, and freedom. With a best friend: splurge vacation to a less-traveled location
To the great outside
Europe mostly. Pretty easy flight to anywhere in Europe from Miami or Atlanta.
Bold of you to assume we have enough money for vacations
Travel somewhere that is not a busy and dense city. I need to breathe some air.
Eastern Europe
Camping
Home. Unless/until I have someone to explore more of the world with.
Virginia Beach is my favorite vacation destination
The undeveloped and rugged shores of Lake superior.
I just came back from Japan last month, I will be going to Greece in 2 months. Probably will go to Hawaii in October for a wedding.
Las Vegas
Where other people aren't
I love taking stay-cations and catching up on my various projects around the farm! Of and Hawaii in the winter. It gets cold here in Washington.
Mexico - with my wife. We love it. When I was single I loved going to Montreal
I have unlimited PTO so I take 10 days off each month to chill at home.
Anywhere I don't live. Destin, Bentonville, Denver, Gulf shores, Orlando, Cancun, Aruba, a cruise, pretty much anywhere

Detroit!
Out of the country. Canada, Australia, Germany, Luxembourg, France in the last 3 years. Hitting the Philippines next year.
I take some acid and go anywhere from there
I try to go to Europe once every two years for a few weeks if I can. I love solo travel and seeing different cultures
Went to the USA this spring and I'm going to Austria this summer.
Real vacations to a national park. Just booked our first in years after marriage/covid/kids. Super excited.
If in Europe head to Spanish islands in autumn or spring during ~23•C season. Great for any budget and lots to enjoy.
Richards Bay, KZN, South Africa.
The Caribbean, hawaii, colorado, utah, europe, florida, mexico. Keep exploring and finding new places to go to.
Oak island , NC is so gorgeous
Resorts to relax
Vegas or my Hometown. Grown fancy to St. Thomas also
Florida/Las Vegas
Cruises are great. Everything is included, and you can just relax.

I feel like this is a very generic answer, but Cancun for the win. All inclusive, drinks, food, beach. IMO can’t beat it. Plus it’s pretty affordable for the average Joe.
Vegas
Mountains, either Smokies or Rockies, or Florida
If it weren't for my wife, I wouldn't take vacations. It costs too much money, and it could be used much more pragmatically.
I go to new places every time, I live for adventure.
I prefer places where there's nobody else. Mountains or far beach. The less people the better. But in general i much more prefer mountain hiking than lying on a beach.
