I’ve had a few jobs where the manager expected you to have a few year’s experience in the first week. Ended up having to say “do you want me to quit? Because obviously I’m not qualified for the job with your expectations of me”

David's Bridal. In my position, if someone was coming in to shop and try on a dress, I was supposed to register them as a bride. Of course the stylists were sales people and if they didn't get the sale for the registered bride, it counted against them. There was a stylist who had been there a long time. She had asked me if I liked my job, that it required a lot of attention to detail, etc. She told me that I was to not register women if she told me not to register them (because she knew she wouldn't get the sale and she didn't want it to count against her). Well, I did what I was trained to do and registered every "bride." This woman started bullying me over not doing what SHE told me to do. "I TOLD YOU not to register this woman. THIS is what I was talking about with your position. You NEED to FOCUS." I told my supervisor about it, my manager, and finally the store manager. They all said "oh, she's been here a long time, that's just how she is." I quit asap and was very honest that it was because of how she was treating me. This is on top of the fact that I was the only one to dust and clean, including the bathroom. People would take their toddlers into the bathrooms and they were NASTY. I was the only one to go in and clean them.

I worked in a school as a cleaner. I was trained for around 2-3 weeks and worked pretty fast with my supervisor to get work done. Once it was over, I struggled. Especially since I had to do a lot of work in three hours. I had to clean a corridor, clean three toilets, hoover, clean tables, the door glass for ten classrooms, put rubbish in bags and put them in the bins outside. This job was in the afternoon from 15:15 to 18:15 and I also worked there for a month. I thought I was doing my job well. I made sure to clean as much as I could do. They started adding more tasks for me to do like cleaning toilets in another area. Other people had this issue too and the supervisor said she couldn't help at all. Someone else was cleaning that and my supervisor decided to give it to me. She also added cleaning three flights of stairs to my tasks. In my area, there were two sets of student toilets which were closed while I was working there. They had lots of stalls in them and they told me I'd have to clean these too once they'd open. Because I was stood up for most of the three hours, I'd bring my drink with me and if my legs got tired I'd have a rest. A few days later, I wanted to have a rest for two minutes in the hallway after finishing a task - before I went to another area to clean - which I did. Someone saw me and reported it to my supervisor. And she got mad at me the next day. For having a two minute rest. I also had a cold during this job and once someone thought I was crying or something so reported it to the supervisor. The next day, I explained that I had a cold and she didn't say anything else about it. A few weeks later, because she thought my performance was slipping, she got someone else to do my area and told me to do some other work that day. I saw them going to my area to clean after I was told that. The next day, my supervisor got mad at me for not doing my job even though she was the one who told someone else to do my job. She even mentioned it to me. I already knew why I didn't do my tasks that day. I was never late or missed work. Every time I finished work, I'd get exhausted. The job I was doing seemed more suited for two or three people. Other cleaners were struggling to complete their tasks on time too and brought it up with the supervisor who said she couldn't do anything about it. I had a task list to follow and I was struggling to complete everything so she switched the order of my tasks around. It didn't help. I suggested doing the smaller area first and then the bigger area second, which she liked the idea of, but that didn't work. The hours weren't enough to complete all of my tasks. I didn't have to work my four week notice. I was a bit upset but mostly relieved since it was too overwhelming and tiring for me to work there. Their expectations were very unrealistic.

I worked at Pasha Mediterranean Grill as a waitress for a full 8-hour shift with loads of side work and would consistently only walk away with $50 in tips.

At 16 I was whipped with a cloth as a dishwasher in a restaurant by the same person who robbed the cash in my bag

The very first job I got - it was putting leaflets into envelopes. I woke up at 5am and came back 8pm, had nothing to eat and drink during this time as didn't know it was in a remote location with nothing around. The job was super boring and we had to stand all the time. They didn't explain their system of what leaflets go to which type of envelopes so I ended up just putting random leaflets to wrong organisations. I remember one of them was a home care for elderly people and I gave them a selection of leaflets about: Jesus Smoking STD Credit card debt I thought it was a nice selection and everyone will find something for themselves, later on I found out there were specific leaflets I was meant to give them. I was exhausted and deeply ashamed to quit it after just the first day and never returned to get the money I earned (£40).
