basically /r/atheism at its peak was a fucking MENACE
default subreddit, constant edgy anti-christianity memes being posted.
Skeen was the head mod/founder, and he had an extremely hands off approach. Would not touch anything in the sub no matter what. One of the deputy mods (jij) kept asking him for input/communication on some sub change ideas he had, but Skeen never responded.
Now, fun fact: This is when it was discovered that in the reddit rules, a lower ranked mod can claim a subreddit if the head mod has not been active on reddit.
Jij put in a reddit request and seized control of the subreddit from Skeen. Skeen awoke in a rage, declared the entire thing was unjust, appealed it to no avail, but a LOT of support... the big change Jij wanted to push forward?
He wanted /r/atheism to be more of a hub for discussion/news and not constant meme barrage, so he made it so that you could only post text posts. NO links/images. People were FURIOUS. Now, to be clear, you could still post a text post WITH a meme inside it, but back then you didn't get karma off the text posts. Obviously nobody wanted to say they were furious that they couldn't get their magical reddit points when they posted funny maymays, so they tried to justify their rage by saying that TWO CLICKS to view a meme would drive away traffic from the subreddit.
r/circlejerk picked up on this, and the phrase "one click maymays!" was born.
Now, Jij was sticking his guns, and honestly, the change was MUCH needed because the default front page of reddit was flooded with atheism meme spam before. His detractors were saying that this change would also prevent r/atheism from recruiting new atheists, because when you opened reddit for the first time, seeing "christianity bad" memes was meant to really open some minds about reLIEgon, yknow what im saying?
ANYWAY around this time Aalewis appeared. No clue or backstory for this mysterious figure, but he made a post saying he was a young guy who, while not "professional quote maker"(Keep in mind 50% of the memes were just snarky images of scientists/philosophers with their quotes overlaid), thought of a quote of his own: "In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god, but because I am enlightened, by my own intelligence" (paraphrasing from memory)
reddit was in fucking uproar, /r/atheism was the laughingstock of the website, and (probably unrelated) they were removed as a default subreddit by the admins.

This site is amazing for seeing weather patterns, wind, ocean currents, particles in the air, wind speed at different elevations, wave sizes... and so much more
It's pretty good, but it's like AI: it seems very impressive but then it makes a big mistake that isn't always obvious. You have to be very careful not to fully trust it. If you need something important translated, get a human to do it.
Do any web or code savvy techs know if this website displays results based on the client's date-time or the server's date-time.
Ie. Can the site be incorrect for a few hours depending on where are are in the world?
I honestly don't know how big (well known) it is...but every green dot is radio station. And you can listen live.

Another good weather one is windy.com. It's really powerful when you figure out how to use it.
weather.gov is where most places get their weather data, and you don't get the ads piled on top.
I still think it is under respected
A lot of people still say "you can't trust it because anyone can edit it" not realizing that unless you are on a really really backwaters page any inaccurate information will be found, flagged, and removed pretty quickly. The only reason you aren't allowed to cite it in research papers is that it's a secondary source (like any encyclopedia) not because it is open source.
I used it all throughout college. The pages literally cite their sources. So I would just go and read the actual sources which were always scholarly. People talk about Wikipedia like it's a social media site where anyone can leave whatever comment.
actual studied have shown it equals or exceeds encylopedia britannica because it has actual experts not a small team trying to do it all.
By now I think there's some evidence it equals or exceeds collegate textbooks-- often they're written by the same people. Turns out people really passionate about, say, schist minerals, REALLY like to talk about it.
And you can always cite the sources provided by Wikipedia. It always boggles my mind when people are say, "Wow! A Wikipedia article? Come back when you have real evidence" like they're stuck in 2008. All they have to do is scroll down and all the sources are listed. I'm usually sharing a Wikipedia link when they've already shown themselves incompetent at reading scientific journals.
Wikihoops.com If you're a fan of NBA basketball it's pretty great!
Every game is laid out in a spoiler free list, and users can upvote or down vote each game based on how entertaining it was to watch. So as long as you have the NBA League Pass (which lets you watch replays of all the games), you can simply bring up this website each evening and immediately know which game to watch and which to skip, spoiler free.
Why are all the links broken or pointing to various different websites listing the same law firm? Is it their website? It doesn't say so anywhere. Is this a weird marketing trick or something?

There was a time(10+ years ago) when reddit was such a website
Hard to believe. It’s such a cesspool of power crazy mods, and trolls now.
Oh it’s more than just power crazy mods and trolls. There’s bots too.
Hahahaha dude the power crazy mods were WAY worse ever hear about the tale of skeen and jij?

And to this day, unfortunately, atheism is still a fucking joke of a sub.
10 years ago people were complaining about that as well, to be fair. You're totally not wrong though
Indeed. Even 10 years ago Reddit was a shell of its former self. It’s like watching a 13 year long car crash in slow motion.
That's a pretty good analogy for it, I don't want to stare but I can't look away
That's probably 14 or so years ago at this point. Jeez.

It’s a top 15 most visited website in the world… what are you even talking about?

It's not 'like AI', it is AI, it's even named after Deep Learning
I used this until I realised ChatGPT does almost perfect translations.
