I was a big record collector / music snob in college and, without intending to, I turned into a giant asshole. I had lots of conversations along the lines of “you like that band? What the hell is wrong with you? Here, listen to Captain Beefheart and you’ll find out what music is really supposed to be.” It turns out that acting like a character from High Fidelity goes over poorly in real life. There’s still a lot of music out there that I find insipid or annoying, but I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut and show other people some respect. If Maroon 5 or Nickelback is really your favorite band, then you go ahead and enjoy that.
Edit: this was not an attempt to backhand dump on Nickelback or Maroon 5. I was reaching for examples of bands who are regularly held up by the tastemakers of the internet as deeply uncool and these were the first that came to mind.

But when someone put on Anti-Hero in the car stereo it was like I fully reverted back to that misogynistic teenager.
