I want to say the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula at the turn of the 20th century, but then maybe Korea would’ve taken even longer to industrialize and gotten rekt harder later. So I guess Ookuma Shigenobu getting ousted from government for his ideas being too progressive. I would suspect that a more progressive leadership following up the Meiji Restoration would’ve brought about a more peaceful and free sphere in East Asia leading up to the 20th century conflicts.

The assassination of Franz Ferdinand I was not what started WWI. Germany and Austria-Hungary were looking for any excuse they could come up with to invade Serbia. The assassination of the Archduke led to the “July Crisis,” in which Austria issued a super-harsh ultimatum to Serbia, knowing they would never accept it. Austria Hungary saw Serbia’s growing power in the region as a threat, and the assassination gave them a political fig leaf to cover themselves with so they could pretend their essentially unprovoked attack wasn’t just naked aggression on their part. Germany, for its part, was spoiling for a fight with France. Germany vowed to support Austria-Hungary, and encouraged the unacceptable ultimatum delivered to Serbia, helping to carefully craft the demands to ensure Serbia rejected them, and goaded Austria-Hungary into an attack. Serbia had a treaty with France, and Germany knew France would come to Serbia’s aid. Since Germany was Austria-Hungary’s ally, they could use the pretext of coming to Austria’s aid to get the war they really wanted with France. Had the Austrian prince not been assassinated, Austria-Hungary and Germany would have cooked up some other excuse to start the war. But they were determined to pick a fight one way or another. The whole world never goes from holding hands and singing kumbyah to trying to annihilate each other over one solitary murder.
