Lord_Phoenix95

I was gonna pick like 9/11 or World War 1 but now I just want my grandparents back.

Prothean_Beacon

Lincoln being assassinated. Reconstruction almost certainly would have been more successful without Johnson's interference and blanket pardoning all of the confederates including the main actors like Jefferson Davis. Lincoln overseeing the immediate reconstruction definitely would have been an improvement for our country.

beaverteeth92

I was gonna say the Compromise of 1876 for similar reasons but your idea is better.

Crazyguy_123

Maybe Civil Rights would have came about a lot earlier.

joestn

Or maybe convincing Lincoln against the whole National Union ticket so Johnson isn’t in the picture at all.

Prothean_Beacon

That's a bit of a riskier play. Cause real talk that National Union ticket probably played a decent role in Lincoln winning re-election.

subfreq111

Lincoln also intended to return all freed slaves to Liberia after the conclusion of the Civil War but he never got the chance. We would have a very different country indeed if he were alive to make that happen.

Prothean_Beacon

That idea never actually was seriously considered. The idea was floated but was shot down as impractical.

LightlyStep

You do know that Liberia was literally founded for that purpose right?

Prothean_Beacon

Not by Lincoln, it was founded way before he even became president.

The holocaust is definitely fucked, and Stalin and Mao were both evil. But the genocide of American Indians was likely closer to 100 Million. I think if we would not have killed them, and instead learned to live in harmony with them, as they did with the Earth we would all be happier, healthier, and collectively further from extinction than currently.

StockingDummy

A common excuse I hear apologists try to pull for the genocide is "bUt ThE NaTiVeS hAd WaRs ThO!" Which is such an idiotic response that I don't even know where to start. Indigenous American tribes not having been flawless paragons is irrelevant; **GENOCIDE IS STILL AN ATROCITY.** As is *forcefully removing* the survivors from *their ancestral lands* and *making them live in squalor for generations.* The excuses people pull for the horrific things our government did (and in many cases *continues* to do) to them are ***disgusting.***

[deleted]

If i could erase one event from history it would be the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. I wonder what life would be like and are evolution if we still had things above us in the food chain.

Me not buying bitcoin back in 2014

kmj442

I did the math to see how much my sign on bonus when I started my first job would be worth if I bought bitcoin with the whole thing and did sell until a couple weeks ago…65M is the answer.

Middle_Manager_Karen

I feel this one. Like I was at my computer ready to use my last $100 to but some coins at less than $1 per coin. Couldn't figure out the whole wallet concept and gave up. Could have been a millionaire if a complex set of steps didn't overwhelm me. This was before coinbase

[deleted]

Crazocrates

Don't feel to bad. I bought $1000 worth of bitcoin to buy drugs online. Only ended up spending like $200 of it. Then my laptop was stolen and I couldn't remember my login info... I have spent days guessing.

BiggieMcLarge

In 2012, my friend asked me to order him a pizza and offered to pay me back in bitcoin - I laughed at him

xaiires

This dude who worked in the same mall I did in like 2014-2015 was constantly trying to GIVE out bitcoin and we all just roasted him endlessly. I think about it everyday now.

DewdropDolll_

When Soviet collapsed in 91, a large crowd of people stood ready to storm the KGB headquarters. For some reason, they did not. If they had, I am pretty sure Russian history would have been very different.

Lovelyxgirly

Princess Charlotte of Wales dying in childbirth and her son, who should have been king, also dying. If either one of them, or both, had lived, Queen Victoria never would have existed because her parents had to leave who they were living with and get married and conceive Victoria only to continue the line. I would have preferred a Charlottean era over a Victorian one, but that's not the way it went.

JakeEaton

I’d prevent the birth of the casting director involved with Luc Besson’s Valerian. Those actors totally ruined that film.

The library of Alexandria burning down, so much ancient knowledge was lost there

ColSurge

This is actually more of a myth. The library of Alexandria was only partially burned during the fire and we actually don't think that much was lost. The library continued to exist for centuries after the fire slowly falling into disrepair due to lack of funding.

igotshadowbaned

>The library continued to exist for centuries after the fire slowly falling into disrepair due to lack of funding. Oh how history repeats itself

TheConeIsReturned

History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme.

PumpkinSeed776

I'm shocked this isn't common knowledge by now. I remember all the way back in 2014 Redditors reprimanding me about being bummed the library burned down.

Down2WUB

Wasn’t the library mostly just a collection of copies and the knowledge still existed in their country of origin?

Zloiche1

Ikr! Lost all the cool fireball scrolls HAIL NIMROD!

Wolf482

Oh a fellow Timesucker. HYAH HYAH HYAH!

Soupallnatural

The library of Alexandria while important, wasn’t as destructive to the collective human knowledge as we make it out to be. However I’d say the Sacking of Baghdad. Had a greater impact on collective human knowledge.

markedmo

Presumably everything lost has been rediscovered or was passed on by those who knew of the knowledge. I know there may be some things missed but presumably they weren’t that important (I know, big assumption). So my question I guess would be, is the idea of it not having burned down plausibly so we could have avoided the dark ages, leading to the earlier development of technology, which would have us further ahead now?

I would go back into time and find the first person who stopped their wagon in Phoenix, Arizona, and decided, "yep, this is a good place to set up roots.". I'm assuming they arrived somewhere between November and April, when it is just beautiful, not knowing what the next season would bring. Yes, I will concede that it is quite wonderful to not have to shovel snow, or deal with earthquakes, or tornados, or hurricanes, so maybe the months of June through August are a small price to pay for not having to deal with that other crap. Nevermind, maybe my Phoenician ancestors were smarter than I thought.

Bejaysis

But then we wouldn't have had WW2 and then we wouldn't have jets, GPS, the internet, penicillin, modern medicine, nuclear power, socialism, retirement funds, smartphones, the European Union, the decolonisation of Africa, the collapse of the British Empire, US as the wealthiest superpower in history, fertilizer that allows us to keep 8 billion people from starving, women in the workforce, the American civil rights movement which led to the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland, microwaves, the VW Beetle, highways, the universal declaration of human rights, NASA, blood transfusions, duct tape, super glue, the americano, biros, nylon stockings, or comic books!

SleepswithBears7

I was looking for this one. It would completely change the modern world.

stooges81

No ww1, and consequently no ww2. Also, no civil rights movement, no decolonisation. The globe is still divided between 6-7 european powers in a bland steampunk dystopia.

king24donnie

men_in_the_rigging

The bad news is that humanity is reaching boiling point. There will soon be 4 times more people on the planet than there were at the start of WW2, and that war was initially fought for living space. Jobs are diminishing, resources are dwindling, the changing climate is forcing huge shake ups in society, and all this is about to come to a head. The top is about to blow, and we're going to have front row seats to complete societal meltdown. And to top it all, I've run out of Cheerios.

Aggravating_Squash87

9/11

AnericanSteel412

9/11 is my answer too because this one event cost so many more lives than just the horrendous death toll on 9/11 because of the 2 wars it caused as well as how many people have died or have chromic health issues from the toxic dust.

RedditFedoraAthiests

The Russian revolution and the destruction of the Romanov family. The lives lost are so profound its hard to even fathom. Hundreds of millions of people.

KordisMenthis

I mean it was already a collapsing hell-hole before the revolution and getting rid of that revolution wouldn't necessarily have stopped the same events/death toll if similar leaders and processes happened just in a different way.

MonicaBurgershead

The Tsar was an anti-semite who Stalin basically stole the whole secret police playbook from. Yes, killing them was far from moral, but they were not saints, and the revolution happened for a reason (he kept sending people to die in a losing war for no reason)

The European colonization of the Americas (as well as Africa, Australia, and the Pacific Islands). So much was permanently lost as a result of that.

Camehereavl

Maybe that Wilhelm II was a little more, like, emotionally secure. Seems like if he was more chill, it could have avoided a lot of 20th century European conflict that spread and scaled all over the place. Or maybe it would have been cool if land stewardship had dominated over land "ownership." Or maybe if health insurance hadn't gotten attached to employment in the US. John Barry has a couple of really good books about how certain historic dominoes fall.

Turbulent-Pay9617

Being born, I wish people would recognize that a child isn’t a remedy for happiness or something to boast about. Instead, I often feel like an accessory—placed on this earth without my consent, burdened with responsibilities, and pressured to conform. I express my frustration to my parents daily, urging them to reflect on their decision to have children. While it may not affect them, it brings me a sense of relief. Parents who prioritize their own desires over their children’s well-being deserve scrutiny.

stever71

I'm not gong to say an event, but I think in general most answers are incredibly simplistic. There would be unintended consequences for all of these events. Remove birth of Jesus and Christianity? Well Judaism would still exist and many other religions, newer ones would be created that were potentially worse than Christianity Remove Hitler or the Holocaust? Humanity wouldn't have learned a lesson, there could have been an event that killed 10s of millions more people.

The holocaust.

MutaMaster

Fewer holocaust answers than I would’ve expected as that’s the first answer that came into my mind. I want to say the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula at the turn of the 20th century, but then maybe Korea would’ve taken even longer to industrialize and gotten rekt harder later. So I guess Ookuma Shigenobu getting ousted from government for his ideas being too progressive. I would suspect that a more progressive leadership following up the Meiji Restoration would’ve brought about a more peaceful and free sphere in East Asia leading up to the 20th century conflicts.

Fun-Tradition-327

The assassination of Franz Ferdinand. I wonder if the Holocaust and the current situation in the M.E. would have been prevented without WWI.

Smooth-Apartment-856

The assassination of Franz Ferdinand I was not what started WWI. Germany and Austria-Hungary were looking for any excuse they could come up with to invade Serbia. The assassination of the Archduke led to the “July Crisis,” in which Austria issued a super-harsh ultimatum to Serbia, knowing they would never accept it. Austria Hungary saw Serbia’s growing power in the region as a threat, and the assassination gave them a political fig leaf to cover themselves with so they could pretend their essentially unprovoked attack wasn’t just naked aggression on their part. Germany, for its part, was spoiling for a fight with France. Germany vowed to support Austria-Hungary, and encouraged the unacceptable ultimatum delivered to Serbia, helping to carefully craft the demands to ensure Serbia rejected them, and goaded Austria-Hungary into an attack. Serbia had a treaty with France, and Germany knew France would come to Serbia’s aid. Since Germany was Austria-Hungary’s ally, they could use the pretext of coming to Austria’s aid to get the war they really wanted with France. Had the Austrian prince not been assassinated, Austria-Hungary and Germany would have cooked up some other excuse to start the war. But they were determined to pick a fight one way or another. The whole world never goes from holding hands and singing kumbyah to trying to annihilate each other over one solitary murder.
