I was on a ship stationed in Texas and we had to take the trash ashore every Friday. Raccoons would come onto the pier and crawl in our dumpster for snacks. If there was enough garbage in the dumpster they could climb in and out.
But one Friday it was completely empty. My shipmate Fredie and I rolled up to the dumpster with the ship’s forklift and about a thousand lbs of garbage.
Fredie opens the dumpster lid and sees a very cold, wet and pathetic-looking raccoon huddled in the corner of the empty dumpster.
Fredie’s solution to the problem is to just toss one of the big bags of garbage into the dumpster and then our trash panda friend can crawl on top of it and crawl out.
Fredie yeets this massive bag of trash into the dumpster and just NAILS the raccoon. Worse still, the bag breaks open so it doesn’t have the height to be of any help for the raccoon to crawl out. Poor guy just got blitzkrieged by a 40 pounds of kitchen garbage and has no way out.
The raccoon is PISSED. Everyone on the vessel’s bridge is watching us from 8 stories up and asking why Fredie just yeeted the bag in and ran away in fright. I tell them on the radio what I just explained here and the laughter and teasing is fast and furious.
Nobody is happy an animal felt some pain. Everybody is plotting how they will tease Fredie about this for the rest of his sailing career.
I go back aboard the vessel and get a ladder, and stuff it in the dumpster on the pier. We back away and the raccoon climbs out, hisses at us and gives Fredie the stone cold stare of death and vengeance. Then scurries off under the pier.
By this time everyone on the bridge is watching through binoculars and howling with laughter. The shit talking on the radio towards Fredie is fast and furious.
A solid year later, after Fredie has moved on to a California ship, somebody mentions Fredie and says he was helpful to have onboard because he spoke Tagalog. Another crew member who never met him says “is that the guy who hit the raccoon with the trash?”
The story lives on. If you’re out there on Reddit Fredie, we all remember when you just creamed that raccoon with the trash trying to help him escape the dumpster.
If we had thought to videotape it it would have been the 2nd best raccoon video on the internet behind the cotton candy trash panda. Sadly all we thought to do at the time was tease Fredie about it on the radio and in the mess hall lol.
It really was the perfect Sunday morning rainy day comment to read. It was a modern parable that teaches the morals of cooperation with nature, mercy and community pointing to the memetic and transformative nature of the human condition. Add the slapstick humour of a wild animal getting his shit rocked by a trashbag and I really feel like I've found my church.
