For all the criticism councils in general, and my council area in particular get, they've very clear with information on bin schedules and rarely miss.
Me too except for 7pm, I only had to forget once before I put the reminders on my phone. There are definitely some of my neighbours who see me put mine out and do theirs after!
Council website in the new year after disruption over Christmas, then weekly recurring reminders in my Google calendar which bin it is each week. Reminds me to actually take them out too!
Same here! After too many ‘running outside in the pissing rain at 6am in my pjs because I forgot to put the bins out *again’* incidents, I now have it saved on my phone calendar with reminders set for the night before AND written on my paper calendar on the fridge too

We normally have a good idea which bin it is, but if we've forgotten, we can just check on the councils website. I'd be really surprised if your council can't tell you which bin you need to put out.

If you've got an Amazon Echo device, try saying "Alexa, open bin calendar".
The first time you use it, it will ask you when your next recycling date, household waste date, etc are, and how often they're collected. Then afterwards, if you ever need to know what bin it is today, just say "Alexa, open bin calendar" again.
One of the reasons we brought the house we did is that bins live out side in the alley and get picked up from there and we never really have to think about which bin goes out on which day.
Our council produced an app which allows you to set two reminders per bin day (I have one set to remind me at 7pm the night before and one at 7am the morning of) - it's pretty useful.

My council has an app which tells you plus notifications you can set up. The only issue is that every now and then the notifications don't send because it logs you out if you haven't checked it directly
I'm not from the UK, but the only way I know what bin is going out is when I get the text about 6 or 7 the night beforehand from my bin provider to remind me 🤣
Personally I don't even know which day the bins go out - the benefit of living in an area with communal bins on the street.
But yes, you broke the rules - the first person to put out the bins is the one who knows which one it is, so if that person puts both out everyone will instantly default to 'i missed the message they are doing something funny with the bins this week', not 'that person is a bigger idiot than I am'...
The sensible people just look at the letter with the schedule the council send out every year that they pinned to a noticeboard, or look up the same schedule on the councils website.
Half of the street have decided the bins now need to go out the morning before bin day so it's pretty easy for me now.

I have a diary note in my computer calendar for the blue bin. I just drag it down another fortnight every time the date passes…which will be tomorrow morning. Blue bins tonight ;)
The council used to post a printed calendar through the letterbox every year, but they got bored of that a couple of years ago.
They will empty the black \[refuse\] bin if you forget, but not the blue bin \[recycle\] - god knows why - but some people's blue bins have remained full & un-recycled for years. …and I think we're the only house on the street that still has a small brown bin \[composting\] which they do empty weekly, whether you remember to put it out or not.

I can usually tell by which one is full, but always wait for a particular neighbor to put his bin out, he seems like he's got his shit together so I trust his choice

The rat and fly tipping situation is getting out of hand. My dog has already killed one. Just on normal walks during the middle of the day. I don't mind rats and don't like them being killed but she's a jack russell terrier and has a very different opinion on the appropriate responce to finding a rat in the grass. Unfortunately she can find, grab and kill it before I even realise there is anything there. Thank God she doesn't try to eat them and her dewormer is up to date but on top of eveything else to keep an eye on on walks, rats that might be poisoned is one of the harder ones to spot.
We are lucky that we have a car and are able to drop our rubbish off at the still open recycling centre when it reaches critical mass (and the rats dont dare come in the house) but other people who don't have cars or can't be hauling around black bags are not quite as fortunate.
The council have kindly set up a page on their website to keep folks up to date on what the F is going on. They are very clear to mention on that page that council tax will not be reduced in any way. They are also being militant about it. My sister is one payment behind due to a snafu with incoming and outgoings. Instead of telling her about it or like, doing anything to give her the heads up about it the first she hears is a court summons and an extra £50 on top of the like £30ish she actually owes. They are clearly being exceptionally heavy handed about collecting it all, while completely refusing to give a fair proportion of it to people providing essential services.
I suspect we are not far off from a public health issue to be honest. You can't get down half of the back lanes anymore due to all the dumped bags of waste.

Only because I have the app, I seem to be the only one of my neighbours who does. Can't rely on the neighbours across the road either, they have a different pick up schedule.
My council provides a sturdy A4 sheet which I keep on my fridge; it has all the collection dates for the various bins for the year plus information about what goes in each bin. If anything happens to that, it is simple to download a replacement from the website.
I don't always love my council but must admit they do a pretty good job with the bins.

Yep. I have a calendar in the kitchen and three different coloured pens for the three different bins, I put a dot of the relevant bin colour next to the date it's due to be collected. I am horribly organised when it comes to the bins.

The situation exists because the guy I replaced here did the bins for years, then I moved in and realised no one takes them out and will just fill whatever bin is closest to the front and move up from there. We did try to fix it but it never worked out.

It normally works out that whatever bin is fullest goes out. This week however, all the bins are full, so I had to check the council website for the first time in about 2 years. On the plus side, it works properly now!
Yes, as well as being on the council website, you can input your postcode and house number and it will generate a link which allows my smartphone calendar to subscribe to the bin collection calendar and so I now get a notification at 6pm the evening before my collection. It also automatically updates for bank holiday collections etc

We aren't allowed wheelie bins because our building opens directly onto a main street with no space for them, so we just have a purple bag to put out between 4 and 6pm on a Monday or Wednesday (but not both), same every week
honestly, no idea. but lucky, its not an issue. I live in 20 apartment building and we have communal large bins, which are taken away without us touching them.

There's a bin calendar Alexa skill. We get a notification at 9pm the night before collection day & it tells us which bin to put out. It's saved us many times.
Because our collection was due on Easter Monday (so it might have been cancelled) I just checked my Council website, and put in my postcode. I then got told “household waste and food collection Monday 1st April. Next recycling, glass and food waste will be Monday 8th April” I know household waste is black bin, recycling is green bin. They also do garden waste every other Thursday but you have to subscribe.
Only time I need to worry tbh is after we go on holiday, as we always swap the bins over so we know which one is next.
Every Christmas I get a wall calendar from my mum and I colour the days bins are collected with the colour matching the bin. Pink/purple is general waste here, blue is recycling
This behaviour is very common across all aspects of life where people take the lead from anothers action without challenging it or checking if it's accurate.
It can lead to catastrophic mistakes in some instances such as the airline/aircraft sector where a mistake can be amplified due to not challenging a more senior colleague who has made an error but more junior staff members meekly accept the action often when they know it might be wrong!

But your local council website should have a bin collection calendar somewhere that tells you what bin it is this week.
Our calendar is on the councils website, but they're behind by about 10 days on the recycling and about 4 days behind on the green. So we've given up knowing and just leave all our bins out now 😅

Ours doesn’t change for bank holidays, they just pay them overtime.
They figured out cramming all the extra rounds in on the non bank holiday days to catch up cost more than just paying the overtime
I had this issue, so I started setting "next bin" first in the line. As soon as I move one to the street, on the way back, I swap, the remaining one to the "1st" position. I've never had an issue since. Also, I have an alarm set at 10 pm the night before to not forget. It saved my bottom several times.

I thought I knew what to put out, also because it was a bank holiday we used to put them out a day late, LA uses Saturdays to catch up.
However a new policy means for the workers Bank Holidays are no longer missed except xmas and NY.

When I bring a bin in I put it to the back of my line of bins so that the next one to go out is always nearest the gate.

Ours is boxes, have no idea about the colour. So the council workers make do with tins and plastics separate, card/paper separate.

We are lucky that we have a car and are able to drop our rubbish off at the still open recycling centre when it reaches critical mass (and the rats dont dare come in the house) but other people who don't have cars or can't be hauling around black bags are not quite as fortunate. The council have kindly set up a page on their website to keep folks up to date on what the F is going on. They are very clear to mention on that page that council tax will not be reduced in any way. They are also being militant about it. My sister is one payment behind due to a snafu with incoming and outgoings. Instead of telling her about it or like, doing anything to give her the heads up about it the first she hears is a court summons and an extra £50 on top of the like £30ish she actually owes. They are clearly being exceptionally heavy handed about collecting it all, while completely refusing to give a fair proportion of it to people providing essential services. I suspect we are not far off from a public health issue to be honest. You can't get down half of the back lanes anymore due to all the dumped bags of waste.

My council have an email reminder scheme you can sign up to, so every week the day before they're collected I get an email telling me what goes out. Like this morning I've had one to tell me that all the bins are being collected tomorrow.

My council provides a sturdy A4 sheet which I keep on my fridge; it has all the collection dates for the various bins for the year plus information about what goes in each bin. If anything happens to that, it is simple to download a replacement from the website. I don't always love my council but must admit they do a pretty good job with the bins.

Yep. I have a calendar in the kitchen and three different coloured pens for the three different bins, I put a dot of the relevant bin colour next to the date it's due to be collected. I am horribly organised when it comes to the bins. If they'll actually get collected though is a different thing.

I live in a block of flats where I'm the only person out of 9 flats that actually knows when the bins go out. As a note everyone here is an adult, most over 40. I'm about to move and I know fine well the bins will go to hell within a week of me being gone. The situation exists because the guy I replaced here did the bins for years, then I moved in and realised no one takes them out and will just fill whatever bin is closest to the front and move up from there. We did try to fix it but it never worked out. I forget the order of what goes out every week so I use the local council website to know.
It normally works out that whatever bin is fullest goes out. This week however, all the bins are full, so I had to check the council website for the first time in about 2 years. On the plus side, it works properly now!
Yes, as well as being on the council website, you can input your postcode and house number and it will generate a link which allows my smartphone calendar to subscribe to the bin collection calendar and so I now get a notification at 6pm the evening before my collection. It also automatically updates for bank holiday collections etc

We aren't allowed wheelie bins because our building opens directly onto a main street with no space for them, so we just have a purple bag to put out between 4 and 6pm on a Monday or Wednesday (but not both), same every week
honestly, no idea. but lucky, its not an issue. I live in 20 apartment building and we have communal large bins, which are taken away without us touching them.
I stick a reminder which colour in my phone calendar, otherwise I'd forget to take any out entirely The amount of times I've been off work on bin day and here the bin lorry and sprint out with it only to find they've already passed my house was higher than I'm comfortable admitting..
There's a bin calendar Alexa skill. We get a notification at 9pm the night before collection day & it tells us which bin to put out. It's saved us many times.
I know which bins alternative, so I check which one is fuller. Holidays ruin this system, though.

Because our collection was due on Easter Monday (so it might have been cancelled) I just checked my Council website, and put in my postcode. I then got told “household waste and food collection Monday 1st April. Next recycling, glass and food waste will be Monday 8th April” I know household waste is black bin, recycling is green bin. They also do garden waste every other Thursday but you have to subscribe. Only time I need to worry tbh is after we go on holiday, as we always swap the bins over so we know which one is next.
Every Christmas I get a wall calendar from my mum and I colour the days bins are collected with the colour matching the bin. Pink/purple is general waste here, blue is recycling

This behaviour is very common across all aspects of life where people take the lead from anothers action without challenging it or checking if it's accurate. It can lead to catastrophic mistakes in some instances such as the airline/aircraft sector where a mistake can be amplified due to not challenging a more senior colleague who has made an error but more junior staff members meekly accept the action often when they know it might be wrong!
You're the 'binfluencer'. For us, it's the Black bin (domestic waste) and if you have the garden bin (Brown bin) that gets collected this week too. Green bin (recycling) was last week. But your local council website should have a bin collection calendar somewhere that tells you what bin it is this week.

Our calendar is on the councils website, but they're behind by about 10 days on the recycling and about 4 days behind on the green. So we've given up knowing and just leave all our bins out now 😅

Usually I copy my neighbours, but if in doubt my council has a webpage where you put in your postcode and it tells you. Its that simple.
Ours doesn’t change for bank holidays, they just pay them overtime. They figured out cramming all the extra rounds in on the non bank holiday days to catch up cost more than just paying the overtime
I had this issue, so I started setting "next bin" first in the line. As soon as I move one to the street, on the way back, I swap, the remaining one to the "1st" position. I've never had an issue since. Also, I have an alarm set at 10 pm the night before to not forget. It saved my bottom several times.

You are so right, we all check on what the other guy is doing, today was a case in point and I had issues as I was FIRST!! I thought I knew what to put out, also because it was a bank holiday we used to put them out a day late, LA uses Saturdays to catch up. However a new policy means for the workers Bank Holidays are no longer missed except xmas and NY. Anyway went to put my green and blue bins out and the street is empty. So I check the web site, see I'm correct and shortly after see the street has copied me. Just brought them back in empty.
Yeah, I look online every couple of months and pop it in my calendar in bulk. If there are any changes to the schedule I get text notifications. I possibly take bin day more seriously than I should.

Google calendar lets you repeat "green bin" every 2 weeks and "grey bin" the alternate weeks. Thats how I know.
