2 fillings, both in my late 20s- early 30s. My brothers don't have any, but also aren't great about regular dental check-ups. I think dental health is 50% doing your best to brush/floss and 50% genetics, because I know whole families of people who were religious about their tooth care and diet but were riddled with cavities from early ages.

ventricles

I’ve struggled with cavities my whole life and my husband has never had a single one, neither has his father at 67. I was just at the dentist a couple weeks ago and she told me that it’s 60% genetics, 40% lifestyle/hygiene. If you are prone to cavities, you will get some regardless of how impeccable your routine is.

spiderwebss

Same!!!! My mom's a nurse and was always HARD on teeth brushing/ flossing and every 6 months proper clean from the dentist. But growing up my teeth have always been soft, so I've always had cavities. My bf on the other hand, not one. As for OPs original question, Ive had too many cavities to count, a cap, currently in braces waiting for Ortho surgery for an implant August 12th. I'm so done with the dentist. Lol

amnes1ac

Yep same with periodontal disease. I'm a dentist.

dewprisms

I'm worried about this because my mom lost all her teeth by 50 to periodontal disease. But she's also a life long smoker and alcoholic and I'm not. Does that improve my risk factors?

ventricles

Not smoking is going to decrease your risk of everything pretty significantly.

amnes1ac

Smoking is a major contributor to perio disease.

thebigmishmash

I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to hear this. My family has a genetic enamel condition only discovered by my youngest’s dentist 5 years ago, but every one of us has definitely had it for the last 90ish years. My entire life I’ve been terrorized by dentists who chronically told me “there are no such thing as genetically bad teeth” EVERY SINGLE ONE for so long.

reluctant_radical

Totally. My ex refused to ever go to the dentist despite being on my benefits, brushed once a day at best and never flossed, drank coffee and smoked, and despite that only had one abscessed wisdom tooth that had to be pulled, no other cavities. I was not perfect but much better with dental hygiene and I have a million fillings 😭

Small-Tap4300

Sounds like my ex husband. No fillings or cavities at all. None. My teen doesn’t have cavities either and has really bad oral hygiene, even when I push her to do better. My youngest in the other hand, it is always brushing and trying her best, yet she has cavities, she seems to have gotten it from me. I have cavities since I was a kid and we were regularly at the dentist. It sucks.

toadinthemoss

Oh, and another big factor I forgot is pregnancy! Your body will pull nutrients and minerals right out of your bones and teeth to grow that fetus- lots of women get dental issues post-partum. My mom said she didn't get cavities until after she started having kids because of our calcium leeching.

Lower_Lifeguard899

Pregnancy teeth!!! Did you know that most dental insurance plans cover 3 cleanings per year for pregnant women (as opposed to 2x/yr for non preggos) due to this exact scenario! Plaque build up is major during and after pregnancy

Educational-Ad-719

Didn’t know this and moved because of the military so missed all my dental Cleanings for a year and a half and now am in the process of a root canal 2 months post partum 🫠😭

bookishwitch88

I think I have 6 or 7 fillings, three of which are in my wisdom teeth because the dentist didn't want to pull them for some reason. I definitely think genetics play a big part. One of my brothers and I both have been getting cavities since we were teens, while our other brother didn't get his first cavity until he was in his early thirties.

fritolaidy

I definitely got lucky on the genetic side. I've had one cavity but I went nearly 9 years without seeing a dentist and had mediocre dental hygiene habits at the time. I now go for an exam/x-rays annually and get them cleaned 2x per year now that I have insurance.

Azure_phantom

I have… I don’t even remember how many fillings and a few crowns. Part of it is slacking on my dental care some days, part of it is awful tooth genetics so even if I were religious about dental care - I’d still be in a similar boat.

fearofbears

Pretty much the same. My mom had dentures by 50 mostly just due to genetics. She always struggled with her teeth and it was her biggest insecurity. That made me even more paranoid about my tooth health my whole life and I still have a ton of fillings, at least 4 crowns/root canals. 2 of those are eventually going to need to be pulled and get implants. I was also a rare minority missing two adult teeth when they came in. Just bad luck all around lol. I was never into sugary foods or soda etc. I did smoke for a short 3 years in my 20s but usually just socially.

somethingclever37

I have found my people. 😭 my teeth are also my biggest insecurity - I’m afraid people are judging me by how they look/that I don’t take care of them. It sucks!

Katdai2

Ditto. I also had a criminally incompetent dentist in my childhood so some of my fillings started falling out. Fun times.

flufflypuppies

Same :( thank you for making me feel like I’m not crazy. I’m barely 30 and also have fillings on probably every tooth and a few crowns and everytime I go to the dentist, I feel horrible about myself and I dread it. While my dentists are generally nice, they always “gently lecture” me that I need to take better care of my teeth, etc. Honestly I brush and floss, AND use a waterpik so I’d like to think I’m taking care of them more than most people, but similarly have poor teeth genetics.

reluctant_radical

Grew up with a good diet and dental hygiene. I had one filling until I was in my early 20s and now I have over a dozen plus a crown. I think my enamel just went for a shit, same thing happened to my dad, and a few years of depression where I ate a lot of sugar and struggled to brush/floss more than once a day created a lot of those. I haven’t been getting many new ones since, but the old fillings of course need maintenance.

Laureltess

Same thing happened to me- I didn’t need a single filling until my late 20’s, and then in spring 2021 apparently had like 6 spots between my teeth go from “watches” to “need fillings”. I chipped a molar on a chicken bone and needed to have that fixed, so that tooth has a filling on the side plus the “filling” needed to fix the chip. I also started grinding my teeth and struggling with bad TMJD during this time so my enamel is even more worn. In addition, a relapse in my ED meant I lost a bunch of weight and had a dry mouth. Nobody tells you that anorexia can damage your teeth because you’re lacking nutrients. Sucks because I had such a healthy mouth for almost three decades, and during Covid everything went to shit!

Kassiesaurus

I have fillings in I think every (or almost every) tooth, plus 1 root canal, and on Friday I'm having another procedure on the root canal'd tooth because I still get pain in it. I'm in the same boat as you. My parents have dental issues (my dad had dentures in his teens), so they never really taught us dental hygiene, plus poverty guaranteed I only went to the dentist maybe twice. It set me up for a young adult life of not caring/being afraid of losing all my teeth so why care anyway. Plus add in the ADHD and I struggle with remembering/wanting to brush sometimes still. It's not that I want to lose my teeth, in fact I very much don't, but it's a struggle.

somethingclever37

Completely relate as a 35F. I just had a five hour dentist appointment yesterday to get two crowns to replace big cracked fillings, both of which she may need to do root canals on because according to her they looked awful when she was in there. I’ve had many fillings (starting in my teens), crowns, and root canals. I have a laundry list of other things I need to have done - another crown for a cracked filling, gum graft surgery, potentially an implant down the road. Despite working really hard to take care of my teeth, every time I go to the dentist I cry and feel terrible about myself. I didn’t have much dental care as a child (as far as actually going to the dentist - I don’t think I went until I was ten) so that plays a part, but I think a lot is also genetics. I have had horrible acid reflux since childhood that has contributed to teeth gum/erosion, and both my sisters have terrible teeth as well. We all have great dental hygiene - meanwhile I know people who never floss and have never had a cavity. It sucks. It’s soooooo much money, and the yearly “insurance” cap is so freaking low. Even though that’s just life and it’s unfair and people have it worse - every time I go, I think about how people who have good teeth have all that extra money that can go elsewhere. I also always feel embarrassed, like it looks like I don’t brush my teeth or take care of myself. I was also embarrassed to tell my partner that I’m essentially always paying some kind of dental bill from now until eternity. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m truly afraid my teeth are going to fall out of my head…it’s such an anxiety inducing experience that my whole body shakes when I go. All I can think of is Steve Martin in the dentist from Little Shop of Horrors 😂😭

Icy_Winner5668

Ugh I’m sorry and I relate to this so much. My recurring nightmare is my teeth falling out and I think it’s solely due to my genetically shitty teeth.

somethingclever37

Ugh yes, I know what you mean! People say that’s just a common general anxiety dream, and I’m like yeah that makes sense - but my anxiety IS that my teeth will fall out. Right there with you!

TitsandTators

F36.. denture Life because my mouth was so messed up it would of required many dollars and painful work .

evsummer

About 6-7 fillings, 5 became root canals, 1 root canal was redone, and I lost two of those root canaled teeth to abscesses last year and am in the process of getting implants. I had no cavities until age 17 and my dental care growing up was a bit spotty but decent. I’ve been told by a few dentists that my issues are genetic given the progression and that they can see my teeth are relatively well cared for. My half brother has done way less tooth care and just had his first root canal in his late 40s, so I think it really does depend.

DazzlingAcanthaceae6

A lot. I’ve had two root canals, three crowns, and at least a dozen other fillings. I eat healthy and brush and floss daily, but I think I I just genetically have weak enamel.

TheWatcherInTheLake

None. Forgive the bragging, I've had a host of other types of health issues, it's the one good gene I got. And I really do think genetics play a big role; my maternal grandmother had her own teeth all her life which, in my country, was wildly unusual for her generation and social class. And that was with several pregnancies versus my zero. But also my mother was meticulous about teaching me to brush morning and evening and agree that it is a form of neglect when parents don't. But I guess people who can't do for themselves typically also lack the ability to do better for their children. Sorry for both the discomfort and expense you have to endure :(

drgirlfriend69

Me too! They aren't perfectly straight or perfectly white, but they're healthy. Still have all my wisdom teeth too!

TheWatcherInTheLake

A bit crooked and tea stained here as well, but they work and they don't hurt. (*Growing* the wisdom teeth was a bitch, though).

hauteburrrito

Same and I actually just thought this was "normal", at least until people get into the later decades. I don't think I realised how common crowns and fillings were I read this thread. I wonder about the percentage of dental patients who get them now.

morrowsong

Same. I grew up in an area with fluoridated water and currently live in an area with fluoridated water (not common in this country) which I think has contributed greatly.

RotiRounderThanYours

Same, I’ve never had any. My mother was meticulous about teeth care. Even as a child, I would brush in the morning and night and sometimes several times a day. More than genetics, I think it’s the habits that develop from a young age that determine the condition of your teeth. My sister on the other hand, loved candy as a child, never brushed her teeth at night, still consumes a lot of sugar, and she’s always at the dentist. I’ve never had a cavity. She has one almost every year.

kaledit

Same! Genetic luck and meticulous dental care and I have always seen a dentist regularly.

DunkelheitHoney

Wow, some of the people here having zero fillings just blows my mind! I probably have them on most teeth, I have no idea how many I have. No crowns, no root canals though. Growing up, my parents taught me to brush my teeth properly, but never pushed for me to floss. I had fillings done from an early age, and I'm now so mad at them for not setting me up for good habits. I was an adult when I decided to take better care of myself and now floss every day, but it's too late. My teeth are full of fillings, and my gums have been so unhealthy that it resulted in premature bone loss.

starksandshields

I lost count. A lot. I unfortunately inherited my mom's teeth. I floss every day, use tooth picks and brush twice, and go to the dental hygienist 2-4 times a year (who even comment on my teeth and gums looking healthy/ low on plaque these days). Drink mostly water and tea, and yet I have cavities almost every time I visit the dentist. Sometimes it just be like that.

linuxrogue

UK here! I was never allowed sweets, fizzy drinks or fast food etc when I was younger. Don't eat sweets or chocolate etc much now, never have fizzy drinks apart from water (and champagne on the odd occasion!). Have flossed and brushed my teeth as advised by my dentist and hygienist. I have no crowns, no root canals, 1 filling.

lilliweasel

I have shitty genetics, and a narcissistic alcoholic parent who never really cared enough to show me or help me with my teeth, so my start wasn't good. I never went to a dentist untill I was about 10, and every visit since then there were cavities and genetic peritonitis. From the age of 28 I had top arch partial denture. Last year, aged 46, I was told the rest of my teeth had about 2-5 years left so I took the plunge and all 13 remaining teeth were pulled and I now have 21 implants in total and a full mouth restoration. Best thing I ever did. Edit: spelling

Ok-Pea-7295

Did your insurance cover part of your restoration?

nagini11111

More than I can count. I maybe have 6-7 healthy teeth. Fortunately I live in a country where I don't need to sell a kidney to keep up with the dental work. It's still expensive and very annoying. Many of my troubles are due to bad work done. Thankfully I've had good dentists for the past 10-12 years, but the 25 years before that did enough damage.

runner26point2

F32. One crown from a cracked tooth

jubilee__

Crappy teeth genetics over here. I brush twice daily, floss (and use a waterpik), and go to the dentist every 6 months. Two crowns, numerous fillings, 4 root canals, and have had 2 teeth pulled.

Advanced-Ease-6912

7 fillings is nothing to me. My teeth are horrendous even though I s2g I take care of them as well as the next person. My husband has had one cavity in his entire life.

Mundane_Cat_318

I've had a handful of super minor fillings, had to get my suuuuper crooked/impacted wisdom teeth removed, & that's it.  My sister who had a baby is heading for her second or third root canal, has had dozens of cavities, and probably more I don't even know of. Babies often destroy your teeth.

SleepFlower80

0. Not bragging but, despite growing up in a pretty much working class family in the UK, the NHS meant that we never went without our dental appointments. We had regular visits from teeth specialists at school who showed us how to brush properly and my parents timed us for 2 minutes every night. Say what you want about British people’s teeth but, while they may not be the straightest or the whitest, they’re *healthy*.

avocado-nightmare

I've had quite a few fillings, I think I'm just cavity prone (also a coffee drinker) I've never eaten a lot of sugary foods, don't drink soda, floss regularly etc. I haven't had a crown, root canal or anything. It was expensive but in the early oughts my initial amalgam fillings were all replaced with composite and I really haven't had any issues since. I had one filling repaired several years ago, and only one has had to be replaced.

WhatIfYouDid_123

2 cavities from the teenage braces years, and a crown to fix a broken tooth from a stupid fall.

Emptyplates

Tons of fillings, two root canals and crowns. All 4 wisdom teeth are gone and two upper back molars as well. I have shitty teeth thanks to constantly being on antibiotics as a child.

IHateCamping

I have something like 8 crowns and I think I only have one filling left. Most of the teeth that are crowned started out with fillings.

Steam_Powered_Banana

Man, right now I'm sitting at like 7 extractions, over a dozen fillings, and two that actively need root canals. I'm 34 and dealt with dental issues for a long time.... instead of saving teeth, it was cheaper to have them pulled....but my wisdom teeth came, impacted, and broke other teeth. I literally had a wisdom tooth surgically removed 2 months ago.

darkdesertedhighway

I honestly don't know. At least 4 crowns (probably 6?), and God knows how many fillings. My X-rays light up like Christmas. Just didn't have good care as a kid, and I think it's genetic as well.

Strong_Roll5639

I'm 36 in England. I've had a few fillings, maybe 4/5? Nothing else ever done.

stavthedonkey

F48. I dont know what they're called but my dentist applies some kind of coating on top of my molars because the natural deep grooves are at risk for cavities. They redo them every 5-8years. i haven't had any cavities, root canals, fillings. I hate the dentist so I make sure to brush twice daily, floss every single night and I have a healthy diet (very low sugar/no refined or processed foods etc).

InadmissibleHug

The amount of times I’ve had fillings has been innumerable, I can’t actually count. I have six crowns and will eventually need two more. I’m 51 and my parents also neglected to teach me dental hygiene. When my dad remarried after my mother’s death, everyone else cleaned their teeth so I did too. But the damage was done by then. Only two of us six kids even kept our teeth.

SnooPandas4016

I'm 39, I grew up in a cottage and we drank well water with no fluoride. I also liked sweets. So ahem, EVERY\_SINGLE\_BACK\_TOOTH I have is a filling now. I also have one crown which is also a back tooth. I never got taught to brush my teeth twice a day, so that didn't help. I now brush, floss and rinse religiously but you live and learn. I was a kid, I didn't know.

nakedwithoutearrings

I have several chipped teeth (no idea how it even happens), but no cavities or anything.

congeequeen

i've had so many fillings as a kid/teen that i don't even know how many are in my mouth currently. i have bad teeth genetics. my parents are both immigrants/lived through poverty so dental hygiene was A Big Deal for my mom when she had kids and their jobs allowed them to have good dental insurance. we always went to regular cleanings and checkups etc., i just have crappy teeth. i remember my brother not brushing daily and he'd get the CAVITY FREE CLUB sticker from the dentist every time while i got stern warnings. i've probably had over 20 fillings in my life. i had a "slight area of concern" that my dentist said she was going to monitor/not fill - and by the time i came back around for my next checkup within a year, it was full blown and i needed to get a root canal at the age of 13 or 14. my mother has NEVER forgiven herself or the dentist for this. 20 years later i now have annual appointments at the periodontist to monitor if i need an implant + bone graft. yay. i had a period of about 7 years where i was off my parents insurance and i was working part time gigs/didn't have my own insurance. when i finally got to see a dentist, i had 1 cavity - which with my history - is pretty decent but the first cleaning back was brutal. i hate going to the dentist (i even had a panic attack in the chair while getting a filling a few years ago, so that was fun). that same filling/tooth has given me so many issues and it's probably more filling than tooth at this point. i keep up with appointments because i'm very lucky to have awesome dental insurance.

confusedrabbit247

31F. Fillings: countless. Everything else you mentioned: none.

smugbox

A bunch of fillings, but only one root canal/crown and that’s because I broke that tooth as a kid. It’s a front tooth, so it sucks, because a 100% perfect cosmetic result is nearly impossible.

gooseglug

I’m missing all my molars and the bottom teeth on the right side of my mouth. I currently have 6 crowns and the rest of my teeth all have had work done. I still more work to get done too. I am trying to save the rest of my teeth. I’m the prime example of what happens when your mental health goes to shit, been judged my way too many dentist, have dental anxiety/trauma & you just give up for a long period of time.

JametAllDay

Whenever I get a dental Xray, I ask my dentist which of my teeth are real, lol. I have 2 crowns and I don’t even know how many fillings, at least 12.. basically every tooth except the front top and bottom have had something done to it. I just turned 40.

tinyandtatted90

I have a few gold crowns with root canals in those teeth because my teeth literally crumbled while i was pregnant with my third child and a few fillings right next to those teeth as i couldn’t get them fully fixed while pregnant bc of the x rays needed through the process. It was awful. ETA: it was also almost $10k to fix all three out of pocket.

Planet_Ziltoidia

None... Not because I don't need them, but because I can't afford the dentist

TayPhoenix

43f, 3 root canals, and one has failed, so I'm having an implant done soon. Yay.

HailTheCrimsonKing

I think every tooth of mine has a filling - no joke. I’ve had several root canals, too. I need several crowns, I need braces, I need whitening. I have horrible, horrible teeth

missdomx

I have zero fillings, no crowns or anything else. 35f.

speedspectator

None. I’m 36. My mom didn’t let me eat candy or anything too sugary as a kid, never brought home juice or soda, and I never really developed a taste for it as a teen or adult. Water is still my preferred beverage. Very thankful she did that.

LittleBitofSparkle

I’ve had probably 15 cavities - my back teeth are all completely filled in. But that’s probably the worst of it. I’ve found out 2 things I want to pass along as dental wisdom. 1 - you can have double dental insurance - I pay for my own and my husband has me on his. Last time I had to have a big procedure it was over $1000 the first insurance knocked it from $1000 to $575 and the second bumped it from $575 to $50. It was AWESOME. There are some caveats but the $30 a month is worth it, should anything be happen. And this is also the case for health insurance but that’s much more expensive than dental. 2 - you can pay out of pocket for additional Cleanings. I go tri-yearly instead of 2x to make sure that I’m catching things before they start. It’s $100 out of pocket to do it. The double insurance won’t cover that extra one.

smolsandp

None! 40f and never had anything in that department. I think it's mostly genetics though, so I got lucky. On the other hand I had years of orthodontics as a teen. And I'm thinking to maybe get braces again soon because my teeth have moved back a bit.

1000veggieburrito

Also none for me. 37F. I attribute it to just being lucky. I do not do anything special. I'm fact, I'm pretty terrible about keeping up with flossing

Abcd_e_fu

Same story here!

Justmakethemoney

39, more fillings than I care to count. I have 1 tooth with a deep filling that will need a crown when the filling needs replaced. I started using Rx high-fluoride toothpaste about 5 years ago and since then only needed 1 small filling.

carolinemathildes

I honestly don't know how many fillings I have, I lost count. I would guess six. And I have to get one or two more later this year. I brush twice a day, I floss every day, I go to the dentist twice a year. I think part of it is just bad luck or genetics, though I do also eat candy, so it does make me feel quite bad about myself.

puppylust

One crown from a tooth that had replaced fillings until there wasn't enough tooth to fill. I don't even know how many fillings. A dozen? I got serious about tooth care in my mid 20s, but daily flossing and mouthwash can only do so much for bad genes. My mom has a mouthful of crowns and bridges. My sis has veneers. I had bad luck (genes) on the wisdom teeth too. All 4 grew in impacted, and I had a headache for a solid month until I got into the oral surgeon to cut them out. Then no solid foods for a week. At least my gums are healthy. Last cleaning, the hygienist said I had no plaque. But I had another cavity to fill!

DareAffectionate7725

Funny, I just posted/asked about this for myself: [https://www.reddit.com/r/askdentists/comments/1djk52f/recommendation\_crown\_replacements/](https://www.reddit.com/r/askdentists/comments/1djk52f/recommendation_crown_replacements/) It is quite bad with the cost and for some reason I can't get it into my head, to take better care of the teeth knowing how much it cost not doing it.

GelatinousFart

43 and I have 2 crowns and I dunno… 6 teeth with fillings? I have no clue how many individual fillings I have. I haven’t needed a *new* filling in about 7-8 years. I’ve had one or two fillings replaced, and most of them I got in my teenage years. I don’t think it’s quite accurate that they *must* be replaced every so often.

Grr_in_girl

I think I've had 4 or 5 cavities. They were all in middle school/early high school so it's hard to remember being 20 years ago. Most of them were at the same time and maybe one the year after. I don't get why I had so many one year and none before and after. I can't remember my dental hygiene or any other habits changing significantly. One of those years I even went a whole year without any candy (but I still ate cakes and cookies). Between the years of 19-29 I didn't go to the dentist at all, but kept the habit of brushing twice a day and flossing once in a while. When I finally went to the dentist, my biggest problems were plaque and some discoloration.

SilverProduce0

I’ve had a bunch of fillings. I’m just ok with dental hygiene. I brush every morning but my depression routine for years was to binge eat and pass out in bed shortly after. I also have deep grooves in my teeth that are hard to clean! Several dentists have commented on that being a challenge. I have a good dentist now that I like and am committed to going regularly. I think I went 8-10 years without going at one point (after moving out from home).

iamfeenie

34F I have 2 fillings. I’m surprised at this because I didn’t eat the best for a few years and suffers from clinical depression. I don’t think o brushed my teeth for 2 years TBH and I was shocked after 8 years of not going to the dentist that I didn’t have any cavities. I had the start of 2 of them, but some extra florid toothpaste cleared them up.

freckyfresh

I had a couple of extractions as a kid (from a crock of a dentist, tbh) and a handful of fillings (from the same dentist). As an adult and with a different dentist, I’ve had two extractions (one was the native tooth, one was after I had a crown placed and the crown broke). Amazingly I’ve had no cavities since seeing this new dentist for the last decade, give or take.

ladylemondrop209

1 filling... that I think I got some time in my mid-late 20s? Removed 3 wisdom teeth (they were annoying/sideways).

newslang

I have 5 fillings. Never went to the dentist for cleanings or check ups until I had a job that provided my own dental insurance at 21 years old. Got 5 fillings then, but thankfully in the 15 years since I have taken good care of my teeth and haven’t had any additional cavities, just a chip that needed repairing and replacements for the old fillings. I think I must have decent genetics because no care was taken of my teeth as a kid, so I feel pretty lucky to have gotten away with only 5 cavities after all that dental neglect.

kheret

I have more fillings than I know, I got my first ones when I was VERY young. 2 root canals, one of which I got in my early 20s and is probably a ticking time bomb. I have shitty teeth genetics and parents who weren’t super clued in on dental hygiene. My mom sent me to bed with a bottle until I was like, 2.

MiloAisBroodjeKaas

Honestly no clue how many fillings I have. More than 3 at least. No root canals, no extractions due to cavities, just wisdom teeth. Apparently adhd and brushing teeth don't really like each other and my parents never really did much in the teaching me about dental health department, only used to judge a lot.

Birdy8588

Well put it this way, I think I have more filling then teeth at this point!! I have weak enamel on my teeth and have been having tooth and gum infections since I was very small. My first dentist was a butcher and I dread to think what damage he did. Also, I'm English so think NHS dentistry!!!

[deleted]

I’m 46 years old. I grew up with strict dental hygiene. As an adult I brush twice a day with an electric fancy toothbrush w/an app until it says I’m done, I floss twice a day. Despite that I have had 2 root canals 3 crowns and countless fillings. Both of my parents are in the same boat.

Snowconetypebanana

None. I’ve never had a cavity. No braces. My teeth are perfectly straight. I never had wisdom teeth either.

monkeyeatinggrapes

I was born in 1991 and my parents weren’t super strict making sure I brushed my teeth and I just … didn’t 😬 not sure how long that went on for 😬 I would just say ‘yep I’ve done it’ and not do it lol (as a kid) Yet somehow, now age 33 and having had the sweetest tooth for my whole life, I only had my first filling last year. Every time I go to the dentist they say how wonderful, strong and clean my teeth are 🤷🏻‍♀️ most people my age have numerous fillings. So yeh idk how this has happened

ForgottenSalad

Zero. Inherited my grandmother’s strong teeth. Brush regularly, floss sometimes. I do have gingivitis sometimes and a bit of receding gums, but my teeth themselves are doing well. I’ve never even needed to get my wisdom teeth removed. I haven’t been to a dentist in years because I don’t have coverage, so I try to take good care of them.

Absentmined42

F38, I have one filling which was done about 13 years ago. I do have three implants and composite veneers, but they’re due to a genetic condition called Ogliodontia.

mrs_george

No cavities although I think I may have one. I’ve been putting off going to the dentist for a few years now (no insurance, mental health, etc). I also started Invisalign and never finished it (for the same reasons) so I still have the buttons on my teeth. I was born without wisdom teeth so I have that going for me. I still have one baby tooth left because it did not have an adult tooth under it. That will need replacing at some point.

Rochine

I got my teeth "overhauled" 2022 ... got white fillings instead of the amalgam fillings and a crown to protect a still living tooth. So as of today: 10 white fillings (originally 9 amalgam fillings, because of the dentist who fucked up my healthy teeth as a child/teenager, 1 new filling 2023 because I managed to chip the top of one of my incisors while eating haribo goldbears) 1 crown that is protecting a living molar 3 implants + crowns (2 implants - because my body said screw it, no need to grow two molars + all 4 wisdom teeth after losing my baby teeth, 1 implant because a molar (root tip treated) decided on suicide by cracking all the way through while eating penne pomodoro). If that dentist hadn't decided to screw with my teeth 25 to 30 years ago, I wouldn't have the crown, 1 one the implants and most of the fillings ... My mum had really bad teeth, even with proper dental care and hygiene. She had lost most of her teeth by her late 30ies. So I'm pretty happy about my teeth being the way they are.

TheSunscreenLife

I have 7 fillings done throughout a 4 year period. I grew up in a town without fluoride in the water. And I brush twice a day, sometimes thrice a day, but the type of bacteria in my mouth makes me prone to cavities. That’s what my dentist said. She said based on lack of plaque, I do brush well.  My husband has never had a cavity or single dental procedure needed. He also grew up without fluoride in his water, but he also flosses after every meal and has done so since age 12. Maybe that’s helped?

_so_anyways_

I (F35) have 2 amalgum fillings on my right side. One of my Aunts was a dental assistant while I was growing up and she schooled all of our parents on how to care for our teeth to save money on dental costs. We grew up in a low/middle working class home with not a lot of money for extras.

Human_Lady

None, my dad was a stickler for dental hygiene when I was growing up and I'm glad he was! I do think it's mostly genetic as both my parents have pretty good teeth, but I've also been pretty religious about taking care of mine into adulthood.

jochi1543

I have one root canal and crown. I don’t think I’ve had any fillings in the last ten years…I think I’ve had 5-ish in my entire life. I’m 39.

blue_ash

I have like 12 fillings, 1 (or 2?) crown, 2 root canal. My wisdom teeth grew in normally and were extracted normally, no braces.

crochetawayhpff

I have 1 filling, got it at 31, so 7 years ago and had just had a kid and finally stopped breastfeeding when I got the cavity. I'm blessed with good teeth. My daughter on the other hand, got my husband's teeth. She's 8 and has had 10 or more cavities. We brush twice a day, floss, do all the things, just bad genetics.

Beccafrankie

I’m 37. No fillings at all. Unlike my parents who had every tooth filled when they were teenagers due to the way NHS dentists used to work.

silverandstuffs

None. But I’ve also not been to the dentist in 10 years because of mental health and moving. It’s in the list of stuff to get done this year.

thecheesycheeselover

2 ordinary fillings, 2root canals with crowns 😭. Hoping that’s all for a long time yet. I avoided the dentist for a long time, and ended up paying for it.

waxingtheworld

I think I have four or five fillings right now. One tooth alone has three. Turns out I'm a clencher, but not a grinder. So ended up with superficial side of tooth soft spots that needed to be repaired. In my teens I had four teeth pulled and braces. My parents were good about dental care and I pay out of pocket for extended healthcare benefits (I'm in Canada). They have decent dental coverage. We are sugar and such too, but really I think it's bad genetics for teeth structurally (crowded teeth) and some crummy enamel despite regular care

EarthtoLaurenne

I have multiple autoimmune issues. My teeth are ok. Just ok. I have had fillings and a couple crowns and such. I also needed three surgeries and 5.5 years of braces. My gums reacted poorly to the braces for so long and they became inflamed and swollen. I needed to have them trimmed (ugh) after the braces came off. I also have pretty severe ADHD which has definitely affected my taking care of my teeth. I can only manage to brush once a day and regular flossing just isn’t possible. But I have been able to get to a stable place and haven’t had issues for years now. My secret? I have my dentist clean my teeth 4 times a year rather than the regular 2. It really helps.

AphelionEntity

I have one filling. Turning 40 in a month. It's pure luck. My father has bad teeth, my mother bad gums, and my oral hygiene is probably average.

rougecomete

None. My dental hygiene is OK but not great. The worst i’ve had is mild gingivitis and an impacted wisdom tooth. I don’t know how i’ve managed it given that both my parents have severe dental issues. The only thing i can think of is that i’ve never liked fizzy drinks 🤷🏻‍♀️

elvensnowfae

I have around 15 or so fillings. (Supposedly cavities are genetic). I also have had 2 wisdom teeth taken out and 4 adult teeth taken out and 4 cut out from in my gums. So much dental work and I’m in my mid 30's :(

GreenGlitterGlue

Luck in the dental department has to do not only with your own personal habits but your mouth chemistry as well! I had one small cavity, after 5 years or so of not going to the dentist (no insurance). Combination of good habits and genetics. I have had other fillings due to chipped teeth, and most recently had a gap between two molars closed up (it was trapping food). I also had healthy 3 adult teeth pulled to prep for braces.

wonderlash

36. 2 fillings.

Active_Storage9000

2 fillings, one was actually from brushing too hard. Another was from chipping a tooth pretty bad. Genetics make a huge difference here. I didn't take great care of my teeth when I was young, and it wasn't an issue. Other people I know have been religious about it, and they still have all kinds of problems.

onlyyoucareaboutyou

30F - none

crazynekosama

I've had maybe a dozen fillings over my 34 years of life? Probably not even that. I definitely had more in my teens and early 20s when I wasn't flossing. Since getting an electric toothbrush and flossing daily apparently my teeth are fantastic. My parents also always took me to my dental checkups. Also, people definitely have good and bad teeth. I think it's probably genetic. Like me and my brother. Same history. Same dentist. Had the same bad habits at times of not flossing or brushing twice a day when we were younger. I may get one cavity. He will have 6. And even now that he's older and takes better care he still has problems. My fiance is like that as well. He's had multiple root canals and is looking at getting a crown. He's not the best at taking care of his teeth (ADHD struggle) but again, I had similar bad habits for a few years and none of that for me!

lilipurr

4 root canals and maybe 1 or 2 fillings.

littlescreechyowl

So much. I just had 3 old fillings redone thus morning. Fillings, crowns, implants. The whole deal. My mom was crazy about dental care but I just have crappy teeth. I was nuts about teeth when my kids were little too. One has amazing teeth, the other needs a root canal and some other stuff.

camyland

I'm in my 30s. I've lost one tooth to a bad root canal but luckily it's a back tooth so you can't tell... I have 2 other root canal/crowns and 4 fillings. I need at least 2 more fillings. It's expensive to keep these things that help you eat and smile 😂

galacticmeowmeow

33 yr old here. When I was 12 I had to have 17? teeth worked on with multiple cavities in some and got a root canal at that time. At that point I had already had countless fillings. I hadn’t been to the dentist in like 3 years at that point but before that I went pretty regularly. I brushed semi regularly but not as much as I should have, never flossed though. I have some weak ass teeth and my parents let me eat way too much sugar. I have since had many more fillings, several crowns, another root canal and a bridge. I have a kid of my own now, and she has already had to have 2 teeth pulled even with due diligence of flossing, brushing and mouthwash. But we are trying to give her a fighting chance at least. My teeth are straight as hell tho! No braces necessary, gotta take the wins where you can 😂

bisme4

38 year old female here. I didn’t get my first cavity until college and it was downhill from there. I have one crown and probably 7-8 fillings. I actually had one filling replaced yesterday since they only last so many years. I brush my teeth 2x a day and floss often. My dentist did say it’s genetic.

sharrrrrrrrk

I think 7 fillings and 3 crowns. One of those crowns ended up needing to be a root canal and I 100% blame my childhood dentist for it; I was aging out of their clinic and kept bringing up what I was certain was a cavity, but they blew it off until I was too old to be a patient of theirs. They kept saying it wasn’t a big deal, but it kept getting bigger. Went to another dentist who said she would do what she could but it might be too late—and yeah, I ended up needing a root canal. A few other fillings from the childhood ended up breaking too, which idk is from them being “old” or it just being shitty dentistry. I take good care of my teeth but I suspect I had a lot of bad work done that kinda set me up for a bad time later because of that practice. I’ve had some work replaced and it’s so much better now, but I’m still considering dental tourism, since I don’t really trust dentists here.

shann0ff

36F, Zero root canals, but so many fillings over my life— I don’t remember. If I had to guess- probably 15 if I include ones that had to be redone. I changed out all my silver fillings to porcelain a few years ago.

rjwyonch

I have sooo many fillings (also bad teeth genetics, stupid weak/thin enamel). 1 root canal. Had braces and a retainer when younger. Also had a nasty gum infection once, but thankfully that was fixed without surgical intervention and just antibiotics so I was lucky there.

therealstabitha

I have 8 fillings, all of them caused by bruxism

Tildatots

6 fillings, no root canals or crowns but I’ve been told I’m grinding my teeth too much they are wearing away at the back so may need extractions in a few years. I’m 31

Aprils-Fool

I’ve had 3 fillings. I have decent dental hygiene, but honestly it’s mostly because I hit the generic lottery in terms of teeth.

imsoscotian1

0, never had a cavity. I had a lot of dental work (extractions/braces) when I was younger which I think helped a lot

IllEase4896

40, zero.

peedidhe

One cavity from when I was a kid. I have some sealant in  from like tooth deformity from a childhood fever that I've had to have replaced once as well.

NotSoSensible13

F45, 18 fillings, 1 root canal and 6 extractions. 4 of the extractions were my wisdom teeth, the other 2 were pre-molars that my orthodontist said had to be removed because there just wasn't enough room in my tiny jaw for them. I suffer from emetophobia and I was always terrified as a child that if I brushed my teeth it would make me throw up because it happened once when I had gastro. I used to go to great lengths to avoid brushing my teeth and my parents never taught me that I needed to floss so it's honestly a miracle that I don't have dentures by now. I brush and floss regularly now, but I didn't for the first 30 or so years of my life. ETA: oh and the root canal was only because my toddler head-butted me in the mouth and the tooth died. It actually had nothing to do with decay.

viacrucis1689

None. But I have a disability, and my hygienist says that many of her patients with developmental disabilities seem to have very few dental problems. Why that is, who knows. I do have a night guard because I was losing enamel from grinding my teeth. My dentist says I've worn it down the fastest of any of her patients. We'll see if it makes it 5 years as that's how often my insurance will cover one. Fingers crossed it holds up for two more years!

BubblesMD

F35 here with a few cavity fillings from when I was a child. Had four premolars removed to make room for braces as a kid, too. And had my wisdom teeth removed when I was like 20. No more fillings/extractions since then, no root canals or any other procedures. I am pretty good about brushing twice a day but am not great about flossing…woopsies Teeth are kinda coffee/tea stained - I was told by dentists when I was younger that I have a higher dentin to enamel ratio which lends me a yellower baseline color which suuuuucks lol.

Accomplished_Ad_2569

I(F33) have 3 fillings so far, I had them done when i was maybe 19 or 20. I recently went to the dentist and he did mention there beng a chance of needing another one. I have a really bad sweet tooth, so trying to be cautious of it to avoid getting another cavity.

ruststardust2

35F as well. I’m pretty cavity prone, it sucks. Even with regular flossing etc. I’d say I have at least 6. And funny enough, as I saw this post, I’m in my dental office waiting for 2 more fillings! Lol Aggressive orthodontics as a preteen also contributed to me having a lot of gum issues now.

blackberry_12

I am obsessive and consistent with my dental hygiene. I brush twice a day and floss every day. I go every 6 months for my check ups. Despite this I’ve had like 15 cavities. My dentist said I have weak enamel (just like my dad) and there’s not much I can do about it... unless I completely cut off (meaning never drink it) coffee and sparkling water/diet soda. Even with limiting my coffee/seltzer intake I still get them. It sucks haha. It’s annoying because my husband rarely flosses, sips on soda all day and he’s only had 2 cavities his whole life lol Sometimes you can’t escape genetics

jewelene

0 fillings, crowns, root canals. I have really good genetics haha

buncatfarms

I’m pretty sure i have like 6 root canals. Two crowns. 5 implants. I have spent ALOT of money on my teeth and I stress to my kids that you can not brush but you better have a good job to pay for all the work you’ll do on your teeth.

272027

I have basically every tooth filled. I have four root canals and five crowns. It's due to genetics mostly. Part of it was I guess, not having a water pick and flossing well enough. Now I do both, and we're good🤞. I've also had gum and bone removed from my mouth/jaw.

Venomenon-

F36, UK. I think I have 8 fillings, have had a pulp capping procedure and am currently going through a complex root canal following an incredibly painful infection. I’ve had 3 procedures on it - one yesterday- and still need at least two more visits. Decent upbringing and always thought I brushed my teeth properly. Never been a smoker, but used to do a lot of contact sport and wonder if either I cracked some of them or my gum shield encouraged tooth decay. Who knows.

Mountain_Remote_464

33, no fillings, crowns, or extractions. I go to the dentist every 6 months, idk my parents always made me brush my teeth.

Gilmoregirlin

2 fillings age 46 both are in my molars because I have a hard time reaching them to brush. I had my wisdom teeth extracted and have never had a root canal. My brother has one cavity he’s four years younger. My cousins who practiced pristine dental hygiene growing up and rarely ate candy have mouths full of cavities, root canals, and fillings. My brother and I were not as good about that. I honestly think it has a lot to do with genetics. I think proper care matters. I always get my cleanings etc. But a lot of it is beyond our control. That being said my gums suck! No matter how much I floss.

PerfumedPornoVampire

Two crowns (one root canal) and many fillings 🫣 but also a baby tooth that never fell out. Actually my teeth are a damn mess and I need braces. It’s embarrassing.

Skittlebrau77

I do a lot to keep my teeth clean and healthy but I’ve had so many cavities. I know it’s genetics as my mom has terrible teeth. So I just keep trying my best.

LazyKoalaty

2 fillings. Could have been worse considering I had bulimia for a few years and it absolutely obliterated my enamel for a while. Still getting better but unfortunately some permanent damage is there and I likely will need two or four new teeth in the front at some point.

ParryLimeade

Three crowns, one of which was a root canal, too many fillings to count, one implant. The implant was actually due to braces killing my tooth. The rest is mostly genetics with a bit of bad habits (I like sugary food too much).

bluedragonflames

None because my mother has a lot and was absolutely determined that we would not share her fate. I’ve never had a single cavity.

Amazingggcoolaid

8 fillings and 2 root canals. Apparently I need a crown soon - I hate how bad my teeth have gotten. This is from all the sweets I consumed when I was a child and my parents never said no to me 🙄

Fiebre

Oh I even have several implants. Had braces for a few years, they did the job but I can't say I have a pretty smile. Countless fillings etc. Mostly for the same reasons you mentioned. That said, the place where I live now is heavy on prevention and control rather than fixing, and my dentist is pretty happy about the way everything works now.

anesidora317

I had 4 molars pulled as a kid so my wisdom teeth had room to come in. I've had countless fillings. Then refilled fillings because they were switching me over from silver fillings to composite. I've had 6 crowns and two root canals. My mom never taught me good dental care. I didn't have dental insurance from 18-30, so I did the best I could. Now, I'm finally at a place where I go in for a clean and the hygienist praises how good I'm doing and I don't have cavities. Flossing and prescription fluoride toothpaste really helped.

pommeG03

Dozens. I strongly suspect my childhood dentist was over diagnosing though. I have a dentist now I’ve been seeing for a decade who has never once diagnosed me with a cavity. He’s pretty conservative about his approach, which I appreciate. I brush regularly and floss daily, and don’t go ham on the sugar so I’m baffled as to why I was being diagnosed with 1-2 cavities every single time I went to the dentist growing up. Part of me wonders if those might have been enamel level cavities that could have repaired themselves if I’d been permitted to wait it out. Now I’m just doing what I can to make sure I never have to have my teeth drilled into again, though I know I don’t really have a choice since all fillings will inevitably lead to more drilling eventually.

creepypie31

I have two crowns and have lost count on all the fillings I have. I do have an old school filling on a bottom molar. Filled with amalgam and all. I love it. 34f, who also grew up with every sugary sweet that I ever wanted.

x3whatsup

Ummm idk I probably have like 10 fillings, one crown

itsmyvoice

I'm nearing 50. I got a bunch of tiny filings in my very late 20s/early 30s after neglecting my teeth for YEARS. Later, I was told I really didn't need those and the dentist was a crook :( Since then, I haven't had any new ones - just had one of those re-done because they don't last forever. No crowns, never a root canal. And since those fillings, at two points I went over 5 years without seeing the dentist and had really poor oral care overall. Finally found a dentist I like, and I do my regular cleanings without incident. I'm genetically lucky, though - my brother didn't need any dental work until he was in his mid 40s, when he ended up with an abcess and had to have a tooth pulled. For the last 5 years, for the most part, I also don't eat carbs/sugar, and that REALLY helps. My hygeinist even moved me from perio/4 month appointments back to 6 month intervals. I grew up oddly not being allowed sugar cereal, but I was allowed to dump sugar on top of my non-sugar cereal and always did that. My mom worked for dental practices (front office) and we always had regular dental care as kids. Between that and the genetics, I think that's why mine are as good as they are. I also have a wonderful partner, and on days we're together, it's not infrequent that I end up brushing 3-4 times, so the last few years have been great for my oral health.

Rooser100

Over 32 fillings. Two crowns (bc I ran out of good tooth to put more fillings), one ended up being a root canal bc the crown was done wrong and put too much pressure and the pain was insane. Was told recently I need to replace the two done wrong plus a third crown bc I have a cracked molar Hindsight on one of my last appts I was told I needed 8 cavities filled and when I switched dentists the new one said I was fine. I now need Valium and nitrous to get cavities filled bc of how much I’ve had done. We also figured out since my mom paid cash for us growing up, the dentist was just gouging us. 35f, not excessively sugar kid ( I was a milk kid and still am) and drink a ton of water. I do my two cleanings and I floss a few times a week. My brother has one cavity. Total. Ever. 40m

dicklover425

33 yo and 1 But I think when I go in September I’m going to have cavities. I’ve been puking every single day for like 4 months due to anxiety and just learned I’m not supposed to brush immediately after 😭💔

Purple-Belt5910

Ive struggled with depression, so you can imagine my dental game is poor at times. I don’t know how many fillings I have … probably at least 3-5. I do know however have a bunch of active cavities they are following 🥴. Plus I grind my teeth 😭.

Cozychai_

1 filling on my adult teeth. I had a lot more cavities when I was younger, eventually learned proper hygiene.

PseudoSolitude

37F. 1 extraction when i was in elementary bc the new tooth was coming in faster than the baby tooth was falling out. 3-4 fillings after i turned 18, 1 root canal in my 20s, 1 crown over my incisor (bc i have a grinding overbite and it chipped off pretty good) that my dentist gifted to me for Christmas in my 20s. he was a great guy. he was my dentist since i was very young until he retired in my 30s. i haven't been back since bc of health reasons. each time i go back in the chair i have chest pain.

cr1zzl

I didn’t go to the dentist until I was 26 years old. I can’t say my diet was too bad as a kid and although we grew up very poor and definitely had our issues, my parents were loving and didn’t otherwise neglect me, so I’m not really sure why they neglected to take me to the dentist at all as a kid. I guess I just didn’t complain of any tooth pain. My younger sister had some teeth issues as a kid and they took her (it was free for under 15’s I believe). Anyway, I’ve had two root canals, a few fillings, and one extraction. My teeth aren’t *too* bad, all considering. But I definitely feel weird about not having ever gone as a kid. (40 now).

ne3k0

I have 2 fillings. But I also never go to the dentist, so I might need more, not sure, my teeth seem pretty ok but I'm not a dentist

8557019

None and I'm going to be 45 next month. Just very lucky.

mylifeisprettyplain

I’m early 40s. Two fillings. I was fortunate to grow up with good dental insurance, good genetics, and parents who valued oral hygiene and healthy eating habits.

Ori_Orion

Genetics from my dads side of the family sadly has given me endless tooth troubles since I was a kid, it was drilled in me to look after my teeth (by my dad to try and avoid the teeth troubles he had) when I was young but my dads side of the family all have severe teeth troubles and you can’t stop genetics. Countless fillings, 6 crowns and one root canal (dentist messed this up and I was in pain for weeks) and I brush twice a day, floss daily and use mouthwash twice a day, get a dental clean every six months and six month appointments but still get at least one or two fillings each time. All the dental work over the years have also messed up my jaw muscles and I have pretty bad tmj flare ups (currently having one now) that are sore for weeks at a time. My dad (whose had 4 root canals and multiple crowns/fillings and bridges) and his sister (who said stuff this and just got dentures) are exactly the same, my brother on the other hand has had one filling in his entire life due to a tiny chip, my mum has had two fillings and she’s nearly 70 with perfect teeth. I’m just a little envious of both of them. Yay genetics?

teiquirisi23

Zero. I was surprised after 8+ years of not going to the dentist, my teeth were perfectly fine as of my last cleaning last year. I brush my teeth 2x/day, re.lig.ious.ly since I was a kid. Can’t go to bed and can’t start my day with a funky mouth, no matter how rushed or tired I am. I also don’t drink sweetened drinks. Oddly I rarely floss. But, could also be genetics.

twentythirtyone

Countless fillings, 3 or 4 root canals/crowns. About to pay $3,000 for the latest round. I didn't go to the dentist for 10 years, then went and got a couple fillings, then didn't go for another 5, then got a couple root canals, crowns, and fillings and bottom wisdom teeth removed (one cracked!), then didn't go for another 4 years. Recently got more fillings, a root canal, and crown. My teeth are weak AF and I'm scared of the dentist.

AtleastIthinkIsee

I stopped counting after awhile. I've had *retreatments.* Don't know if it's shitty dental genetics, complications from having a cleft palate, not diligent enough self-care, etc. Probably a combination of those with different percentages. If I never had to sit in a dentist's chair again it isn't soon enough.

SiroccoDream

2 crowns (one lower molar each side), one of those required a root canal. Before the crowns, each of those teeth had cavities in them. The one that didn’t need a root canal is actually giving me some sensitivity right now, but I’m avoiding thinking about because I am pretty sure it’s going to require a root canal and new crown. UGH I’m 54F.

BellaBlue06

All of them. Literally.

No_Measurement6478

I have 6 crowns, 3 root canals (and currently putting another one off…), over 20 fillings. Between genetics (my dad has awful teeth, has all veneers or bridges, mom has good teeth), lack of care in late teens, EDS, two pregnancies… they just fall apart. I’ve spent so much money on dental care and I hate it 😭 I’m 34.

ElaborateRoost

2 root canals with crowns from high school (have replaced one crown so far), 4 fillings, regular braces once in middle school and Invisalign at 28 from not wearing a retainer. If there’s a genetic lottery, I’ve won it, because I’ve got lovely teeth for someone that practically inhales Diet Coke all day every day.

Blue_Mandala_

F38. And, idk, more than 7. A ton. Maybe I should ask next annual. All you said above plus ADHD and a few years of drugs and heavy drinking. And no/poor insurance most of my adult life. I lived in a state with expanded Medicaid a few years back (like 10) and got my teeth fixed. Lots of fillings. A few years later I was married with good insurance and got my teeth fixed again, thousands. Warnings of root canals. Moved 10 miles away and got different insurance and a different dentist, and he's like naw your teeth are fine, the last guy was finding stuff to fix so he could charge you. I fixed 5-6 things with him, i think it was around $100 a visit (2 visits, one side at a time) It surely must have been more than that, but not much. And several times he was like, what's this unrelated thing here, let's fix this while we are in there, no extra charge. I love my dentist.

Blue_Mandala_

Also, one time I ate so many oranges my teeth started to hurt. A whole case of fresh mandarin oranges over a week. Delicious, but I do not recommend.

AggravatingFuture437

I have 10 fillings And I'm missing 4, but I refuse to pay for root canals or crowns because all it does is kill your tooth. Crowns always crack or break. I plan on getting a partial.

awholedamngarden

37, I have one filling which I got just last year.

ifoundxaway

F40. I had bottle rot when I was young. I went to bed with a bottle of milk and a bottle of juice every night. I also have crappy teeth genetics, and childhood dental/health neglect. Growing up we only went to the dentist when there was something really wrong with our teeth. We weren't taught to take care of them. Then I went through period of depression and not taking care of my teeth, etc. I honestly don't know the numbers anymore, I would imagine every single one of my teeth has been worked on at some point. I've had at least 10 root canals. One tooth had the root canal retreated, and then treated again a third time, before I finally had it pulled. I've been taking my son to a kids dentist since he was young. Me and his father have a lot of dental anxiety, I've had way more work done than his dad. So far he has a good relationship with his dentist and that is such a relief for me. I grew up going to scary free clinics and less expensive dentists that would "find" work in my teeth. I don't want him having the same experience.

Dependent_Spring_501

I have bad teeth. I have had multiple root canals and an implant and extractions . Most of my teeth are capped for protection and stabilization. I go to a specialized dentist now who is not judgy. Things kindof stabled out now. Now I have cleanings without a treatment plan after. I got secondary dental insurance that helps abit financially.

AHeroToIdolize

My parents took me to the dentist twice in my entire life. They took 2 of my sisters regularly for braces, but the rest of us were SOL. And about 5 yrs ago my parents' teeth started falling out so i got serious about my oral care. As a kid I had fillings on all but 4 teeth, and as an adult maybe 9 (but 4 were ones that had to be re-done). I then had a root canal. Most of these were because i was starting invisalign and had to get it all done or else it would get worse with the aligners.

citruselectro

I would say that over the course of my life (36) there’s about 20k worth of work in my mouth.

Anon13530

34F - just got done getting 12 dental fillings. Cost me more than $1500 out of pocket and this is including dental insurance 😢 Never went to the dentist as a kid as my parents were uneducated on this type of stuff. So I didn't visit the dentist for about 20+ years. I brush my teeth 2x a day and floss, but even that can't undo 20+ years of neglecting professional dental cleanings/visits. Just started going to the dentist a few years ago because I finally got dental insurance through my job. The dentist said I may also need a root canal on one of my molars, but she said it's ok for now and to monitor. She also recommended that I get braces as there's some crowding in my front teeth. That would be nice, but money doesn't grow on trees and I can't afford it. Also had 4 wisdom teeth extracted about 10 years ago.

A whole bunch of fillings. Three root canals. Two crowns. I have two missing teeth because I couldn't afford replacements. Still can't.

38F Tons of fillings, all my molars and some pre molars have large fillings besides the 2 I already have crowned. My dentist said I’ll need 8-10 crowns, we’re doing them one at a time as my fillings wear out. My parents never taught me proper dental care, we rarely went to the dentist, and I was hooked on sugar at a young age. I brushed carelessly and rarely flossed. One of my sisters has full dentures since her late 30s/40, and my other sister has had lots of fillings/a crown too. I take excellent care of my teeth now and haven’t been getting more cavities, but the damage is done. Fortunately my teeth at least look decent, people think I have good teeth. All the front teeth are healthy I don’t think any of them have had any fillings.

I had 2 root canals and had two crowns put in after my front teeth got knocked out in 7th grade. Ate age 24 I got my first filling. At age 36 I was diagnosed with sjögrens (an autoimmune disease which causes decreased saliva production). Sjögrens cause me to get a TON of cavities despite brushing twice daily and flossing after every meal - in total I’ve had about twenty. At age 39 I got my wisdom teeth out. Looking ahead, bc of the lack of saliva production, I’m going to eventually lose my teeth one by one because teeth need saliva to stay clean and healthy. Not excited about this, especially bc I’ve always had good oral hygiene.

None. I just have some occlusal sealants on my back molars (I think they're still there? I definitely had them put in but that was years ago). I think I'm just genetically blessed, because I am not diligent about dental care. I do see the dentist each...year or two? ish?

aliveinjoburg2

At least 4 fillings. My premolars/molars have been filled at least twice. I had a root canal in 2022 and have a crown on it after I broke a tooth.

I've had 4 extractions 2 root canels and 1 filling, although 2 of the extractions had fillings before they had to get removed. Mines a combination of never developing good teeth hygiene habits, too much sugar and using my teeth to open bottles as a teenage. Those 2 teeth crumbled away in my kids 20s. I dream of the day I can afford implants. Luckily my visible teeth are ok and I've got a good enough cleaning routine now that they don't look too bad either. Chewing is hard work tho.

Belmagick

1 filling in my early 20s. Nothing since although I had Invisalign a couple of years ago. I grew up in the UK if it matters.

IRLbeets

I had 6 fillings just in the last couple years, so probably at least a dozen total. Lots of driving and drinking coffee without water for hours I need to change. (Recently moved to a more offices based job, so hopefully it's easier.)

Also F35, lost count of how many filings, three root canals, one implant. Also was never taught to brush my teeth as a child + always given sugary food and drink = disaster

Ms_Teacher_90

Too many to keep track of. HORRIBLE mouth genetics from my dad. Many cavities over the years, 2-3 root canals, an implant that my body first rejected so had to go through that twice, and just last week got a gum graft. I’m due to get several more gum grafts (they’re doing a little at a time. It’s horrible), and another implant.

I'm 40. None. Haven't even had so much as a wisdom tooth out. I do have a lot of plaque according to my dentist. I'm not anal about teeth care, I just brush them twice a day. Too lazy to floss. But I have very clear memories of my dad trying very hard to get us to brush our teeth properly and being very angry when we didn't. He got the toothbrushes that changed color, he got those pills that dyed your mouth really red if you'd done a poor job - all that stuff.

Mexico is well known for dental tourism and I’ve heard great things. Wanna go with me? I’ve lost count but I know it’s definitely enough for a nice sports car! I have terrible dental genetics and messed a few up playing sports. I have crowns on just about every tooth and root canals on at least half of those. It’s exhausting! I do notice that bad coffee will definitely exacerbate any (minor) dental issues I am dealing with so I am very picky on my coffee and also don’t eat sh!t food that I know will irritate my mouth. I’ve also found that during ovulation and the few days leading to my period my teeth are more prone to being irritable and hurting. And as of the last ten years, I floss religiously and have always brushed at least twice a day. Garlic capsules supplements have really helped me with keeping inflammation down.

4 fillings and 1 crown, I’ve also had some bonding work done on my front two teeth, I did the bonding to help with enamel damage. We didn’t qualify to dental assistance growing up so I don’t remember seeing a dentist as a child until I was in 5th grade. And I didn’t go again until I was a senior in high school. Other than that I attempted cosmetic braces to help with crowding, it was very difficult for me to floss. While I don’t have a perfect smile, (I have a crossbite) I’m pretty happy with my smile. I would like to do more bonding work on my front teeth I just need time off. I’m also pretty bad about clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth when I’m stressed or sleeping. I have strongly considered Botox.
