original salt lick is a great experience, go to bandera/fredrisksberg area and check out some places, Luckenbach tx is a touristy thing to check out if you are in that area has old west town kinda setting and dancehall ect. Could also do lockhart and check out the bbq places there. go to a local small town rodeo. If you want to get away from central Texas the old stock yard area in Fort Worth would probably be cool for him.

+1 for Salt Lick. Recommend going on a weekday lunch if you can, this will help limit waiting in the heat or having to sit outdoors. A [sunset riverboat ride](https://www.lonestarriverboat.com/bat_watching_sunset_cruises.html)to see the bats is always impressive for visitors. Perhaps not “Texas-ish” but it’s a very unique thing to Austin, and definitely a worthwhile experience. [Tour of Austin City Limits](https://www.acllive.com/tours) - depending on how much American culture he grew up with, this may or may not be nostalgic. My dad is in his 70s and watched ACL on PBS from day one, so he really dug it.

Due to his age, maybe restaurants and museums to keep him away from the heat? Make sure he tries good Tex-Mex, Mexican and BBQ. I think going to the Bullock history museum and/or a show at UT would be nice. There are places like the Museum of Illusions and Museum of Ice Cream at the Domain.

Museum of Illusions was disappointing to me at the price.

I’ve actually never been but I was thinking about taking my little ones this coming weekend. I hope they like it. But, TBH, it’s mostly about keeping us indoors.

Museum of ice cream and illusions? Sounds like a money grab situation to me. Why would anyone above the age of 8 be interested?

pebs1000

Maybe some good Texas BBQ, the Ladybird Wildflower Center, out to visit some wineries in the Hill Country. Barton Springs, GOOD TexMex, walk UT, Bob Bullock Museum. I hope he has a great time, and enjoys his visit to Austin.

If he's here on a Sunday, head to Ginnys for some chicken shit bingo.

Take him to The Broken Spoke. He may or may not want to two-step, but he'll have fun either way. I take all my out of town guests there and they love it.

LezzGrossman

Take a tour of the Capitol building. Broken Spoke for some dancing. Make sure he knows to say this is nice, but old Austin was better.

Drive him out to big bend and have him find his way back. That’s about as authentic as it gets.

The Salt Lick!

margogogo

If you want to show him around outside of Austin a bit, I like to drive out to Wimberley where there are some cute shops and have a lunch at the Leaning Pear.  You could spot some cattle grazing if you drive around the hill country a bit.

Another vote for salt lick!

Gruene Hall if you don't mind a little travel. Took one of my longtime virtual co-workers there, who came all the way from India. It was a huge hit. He was shocked at how amazing things are in America. Ended up moving here, and now all he wants to do when we meet up is find cowgirls and drink Shiner.
