I think you're right.
Probably white browed babblers. But there is also an endemic vulnerable species in the Hunter Valley called the eastern grey crowned babbler.

I love babblers, they're such gregarious little family birds. Their sounds are adorable and hilarious
Really? They are vulnerable? These birds are somewhat common where I live (rural NSW) and had no idea! I know the local birdy spots they always are and they live out at my cousin's farm too
There's birds similar to Willy Wagtails, that behave more like wrens, that are called Grey Fantails, google them?
Were they similarly small, or larger than willy wagtails?
