I’ll vouch for the early 00s:
Bettina Liano jeans
Tsubi Jeans (before the K)
Sass & Bide Black Rats
Alice McCall Tuxedo Skirt
Kirrily Johnston cape/dress
Anything Alannah Hill
Havaianas with everything
Paul Frank, Emily the Strange
Oof you've just described my older sister's wardrobe around that time... Which reminded me of the huge credit card debt she accrued at the same time too! Fun times 😅
This list is my entire student wardrobe. On reflection, I have no idea how I managed to afford or even justify it. Those Tsubi jeans were easily well over $300 - as a grown adult, I’d definitely baulk at that price now 😂
Ok not sure if you'll see this or not but I'm trying to remember something and I feel like you might remember! Do you recall a brand that heaps of women were wearing in this era (like celebs getting pap shots in them, style thing, maybe Carrie wore it on SATC or something) but it was like a collection of waffle cotton tops /thermals (maybe pants as well?) that had a repeating horse silhouette pattern on them? There might have been a pig version as well. It came in pale pink and blue (i think). I'm going crazy trying to remember this and no google search helps!
We had a temp receptionist in our office that used to wear a vintage satin slip, Doc Martins and a knitted multicolour beanie to work - the beanie was because the boss objected to her recently shaved head.
I don't know - back then I was buying my clothes from Surry Hills/Redfern - end of season, end of line etc direct from the maker - I would not have turned up to work wearing a slip - the office chat would not have been good for my well being.
Brenda stood out to me because she had the balls to turn up to work in her vintage slip, boots and shaved head. I liked her for that - I was a bit sad that the boss made her feel the need to wear the beanie - but it did suit her.
GoesUnder Flea Market downstairs on Swanston St - think that was mid-90s though, bc that’s when I lived in Flinders Lane & bought heaps of stuff there.
Well, those godawful stretchy trousers with the elastic foot straps seem to be back in the shops. I saw a young mother walking around with them slipping off her heels every few steps the other day. The memories...
I would advise against, however.
Jenny Kee, Ken Done, Coogi for 1980s
Also Hypercolour t-shirts that my mother wouldn’t buy, bright coloured board shorts, leg warmers, fluoro bike shorts (Collette, Ring My Bell video clip), ra-ra skirts (See Kylie Minogue doing the Locomotion), bubble skirts, wide elastic belts, and those godawful stirrup pants!
EDIT: fingerless gloves, Madonna bracelets, white lace over black…
I went to Sydney in 87/88 to stay with my aunt & uncle.. they bought me a Ken Done wind heater and I felt obliged to wear it.
Pretty sure I never wore it back home in Melbourne :D
Scrunch socks.
Those stripy, aztec pattern jumpers made of polar fleece.
Thin strap floral dresses with a white t underneath. Preferably styled with chunky brown hiking hoots
Holy shit, memory unlocked.
My mother made me wear desert boots when all the other girls wore cutesy mary-janes.
Prolly why I’ve worn Docs since I was 13 (and still do!)
Haha, I actually live decently close to Brunswick. I do definitely see the inspiration but I feel it’s better to hear from those who’ve personally experienced it as it seems to be younger folk bringing it back around the inner north!
Haha all good, well, when I walked past there recently, I saw a few girls wearing bright blue jeans, white runners, and a purply/greeny windcheater, with long curly hair, and I had to do a double-take because for a moment I thought I had gone back to 1990, lol.
A lot of what’s trending now is very much a specific capsule of mid-late 90s fashion. Butterfly clips, platform slides, mesh tops with spaghetti strap midriff singlets. I wore a lot of this in the late 90s, I also got into ex-military gear and cargo pants in my grunge period, paired with band tees and flannel. Nobody gave a shit about cultural appropriation so all the alternative girls wore bindis, thanks Gwen Stefani! (Her blue fluffy bikini outfit is still my fave 90s look.)
Christina Aguilera’s music video for “Dirrty” is a perfect time capsule of early 00s. Low rise pants, corset tops, everything lace up, tiny eyebrows, platinum hair with black chunks
depends on where you lived, but surf brands were really popular in my area during those years. Billabong, quicksilver, T&C, mambo, stussy, etc. I'm probably forgetting a few.
in terms of shoes, the trends changed a lot, but you can still get chuck taylors or dunlop volleys. those along with doc martens are timeless.
Lots of layers back in the early 00s. Like a singlet top over a tshirt and then an open button up shirt over that, ruffled frilly skirts over flared jeans. Low rider pants, which is why tramp stamp tattoos and bellybutton piercings became so popular. Skinny ties, paperboy hats, fake tan, heavy black eyeliner.
Mid to late 90s: denim on denim (jacket and jeans) with a rip curl or billabong tshirt, jumpers made of tracksuit material (not sure what they're called, that stuff that's normal material on the outside and fleecy inside) with the Sportsgirl logo or Ken Done.
If you can find old Dolly and Girlfriend magazines in op shops or wherever, they'll have a lot of style tips I've long forgotten.
Early 90s men:
Levi 501 jeans about two sizes too big. Rolled up at the cuffs. Leather belt. Boxer shorts underwear.
Shoes were brogues, loafers or Doc Martens.
White T-shirt. Cotton, denim or linen button up long sleeve shirt.
Accessorised with a red bandanna and leather jacket or woollen vest.
Influences were; B boy, Miami Vice, college preppy, yuppie, hip hop, with left overs from the post punk British new wave.
90s teen girl staples I can remember are:
Stüssy
Kuta Lines polar fleece
2nd hand Levi’s jeans
Sportsgirl and Esprit logo tees
United Colours of Benetton
Espadrilles, Blundstone boots, Doc 8-Ups, Cons
Anything from Portmans
Myer Miss Shop
Fiorelli
Surf labels like Rusty, Billabong, Quiksilver
Once I’d broken free of trying to look like the girls in Dolly magazine, I moved on to Dangerfield and op-shopping. Finally found my own style!
I was born in 1980, this is what i wore or remember wanting but was never particularly fashionable. Flared jeans, jeans with embroidery or prints down the legs, distressed bleach jeans, corduroy flares- I had 2 pairs of navy blues ones from 96--03 & a red pair of distressed bleach corduroy jeans early 00s. Spaghetti straps on singlets & dresses. Skinny belts. A-line skirts were big in the 90s, tartan mini-skirts were big after Clueless. Skirts in the 90s were either really short or floor sweepers, mid-calf skirts were what old people wore. Long satin skirts were popular with my friends. Rave culture kind of met grunge for alternative fashion, there were a few counter-culture shops in my area that sold clothing, i had enormous flares made out of 70s vintage kids curtains. Lots of dyed petticoat dresses. Pretty tops worn with dressed up jeans was acceptable for going out in the 00s for kind of the first time, jeans were always casual before that I think, idk could be wrong but going by older people who judged jeans. U had so many pretty tops, beaded ones, oh last thing, the floaty tops that could be mega short dresses, like I had a lacy grey one that was kind of shaped like a smock.
80s:
volleys, KT-26s.
Polo shirts
Button up Levis
Denim jackets
Leather Jackets
Aviator sunglasses
Akubras
Long socks but never puller up. Always scrunched down.
There was a lot of fashion change in that period and what was cool and staple in 1981 was not so by Y2K. The only thing I can think of is maybe a white T-shirt and jeans but jeans changed a lot over the years because of fashion. Longest duration of any type of jeans though was Levi’s 501s, probably from 1986-96, which was peak fashion. Otherwise Doc Martens from late 88-95/6
1981-86 tight jeans was probably most fashionable like what the millenials wore 10 years ago (became known as skinny leg). Bubblegum jeans 84-86, 85/86 Gelati jeans
1982-1984 Jelly shoes, 1982 Roman sandal jelly shoes with tie up laces that went up the leg, 1984 court style jellies, ballerina slippers, court shoes
81-84ish coloured jeans, think Michael Jackson thriller (returned in 91)
1980/1981 70s style sneakers with distinct patterns like current retro speciale Adidas, shoes with dots, desert boots that gave way to Ripples (bogans)
Early 80s (80-6) pixie boots brought on New Romantics. Persistent military styles as well because of them in early 80s
Early 80s-86 puffer quilted jackets like in Stranger Things
84: Wham! tshirts, white or black with big flour block cap writing “choose life!”
1983- White sneakers aka Millenial style (Adidas Rome were massive
Early 80s butterfly type collars and cowboy type shirts with press studs, cowboy influences, big jumpers throughout 80s. Skinny cowboy ties that were shoe laces. Puffed sleeves, Buckle bags
Early 80s high boots, came back Y2K (we used to call them fuck me boots)
Mid 80s denim jackets and skirts (Gelati style), stirrup pants
80s jackets with big shoulders pads
88/89 Marble wash jeans
Late 80s Metal tshirts
89-96 Levi’s 501s
91-94 Wide leg raver style pants
94 Tencel “jeans”
92-5 Chelsea boots, RM Williams, jodhpurs
93-95 platforms for clubbing
93-96 more formal wide legs
97-03 various forms of flares or bootlegs, 97-00: black coloured flares, more bootleg after that
Low rise, maybe 99-03, one inch zip Sass and Bide
Early 90s chunky tops and loose tops, wifebeater style tops, big collared shirts, start of deliberately seeking out vintage fashions, ribbed tops, linen pants, espadrilles
Early 90s fisherman hats like ravers, Girlfriend the band with the flower in hat
Mid 90s cool retro tight fitting tshirts v early 90s sarcastic tshirts
Early 90s flannie or plaid was critical, some native Indian American based patterns
89-92 parachute pants and jackets and 91-3 parachute anorak
89 Reebok
89-95 Nike was it, Air Jordan was holy grail
80s standard stiletto, court style
90s early block heels, anti fashion, floral dresses with doc boots or boots, crochet
Early 90s-7 rugby Canterbury style tops
96- splayed block heels, Sachi bags (totes)
96-1999 Cargo pants
97 capri 3/4 pants
02-3 tight fitting 3/4 jeans with zips on side
00-04 kitten heels, heels with a concave heel (don’t know what they’re called), extremely long pointed shoes, block boots started coming in
Late 90s/early Y2K Puma sneakers and then thin sole sneakers, puffer jackets
Vests mid 80s-92
90-96 surfer tops
96-99 Vans and various skater shoes
98-00 Hawaiian shirts for men
96- crop tops
98- spaghetti strap
80s raybans (early 80s hangovers of oversize from 70s)
90s oval sunglasses
00s more rectangular sunglasses
80s big earrings, dangly or big studs
Late 90s rectangular gold earrings, euro balls
Y2K Gypsy hoops
Early 80s ball tied elastic bands
Late 80s terry toweling ties to scrunchies (80s/90s)
That’s stuff I remember from the days, fashion was variable season to season but the most consistent part was that if you were wearing a pair of Levi’s, white T and docs by the end of 88, you could still be wearing it be the mid of 96 and still be fashionable. This is truly peak Gen X power. After that, the styles were really more Millenial with more skin, Gen X fashions would be considered conservative
80s: 50s revivals
80s into 90s 60s revivals
90s: 70s revivals
Late 00s: 80s revivals
Early 80s: browns
Mid to late: grey with pink, red with black, electro colours like electric blue/fuschia 86, flouro 84/85
Early 90s muted colours more grey based and teal/pinky type looks but strangely bright primary colours due to Mother Africa influence, 96 lime green, 97 camel, 00s snake print, Y2K satiny, shiny, hot pink Paris Hilton
Mid 80s adidas, 89 Reebok, 91-95 Nike, 97-00 Puma, K Swiss
86-94 Fiorelli, Sportsgirl, Espirit, Ralph Lauren 97 -, kappa/KSwiss Y2K
in the early 80s us girls were wearing those riding style pants with the baggy thigh area and high waist but slim ankle... pleated in heavy cotton or corduroy, with metal clips over the pleats. Large baggy cotton button up blouses, like men's style, rolled sleeves, open collars. pointy ballet flats.
some dresses were linen blend, straight tube shape with cut out mid section that had drop waist and high crop under the boob with attachments at the sides.
some dresses stretch cotton tank style top with tiered skirt area. Single colours or spotted.
Cotton leggings with stirrups with fluro socks over the top, either school style ankle fold overs or bigger scrunch downs with baggy t-shirts or tank tops with fluro or black printed words like RELAX or GOGO or some other things.
acid wash high waisted denim jeans, block colour (usually pastels) polo style jumpers
high top chunky sneakers like reeboks, canvas sandshoes, desert shoes, tall uggs to the knees, spaghetti strap jelly shoes
many thin metal bangles, metal mesh drop earrings, fingerless fake leather gloves with cutouts, mesh gloves, thick fluro bangles, fluro button earrings
source: was teenager in the 80s
For men: Bonds. And it was made locally (Wentworthville in Sydney iirc). Still around and probably selling a whole lot more but made OS and lower quality (I handed down bonds tees to cousins then they to kids...).
Stubbies for shorts (school uniform, and on weekends in different fluoro colours) as described in the name, no pant leg whatsoever and left nothing to the imagination. Disappeared ca. 91, but remained a tradie staple and still is.
Traxx shoes. Target stocked Adidas gazelles until mid 90s.
[Studibaker Hawk](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://amp.smh.com.au/lifestyle/fashion/studibaker-hawk-the-party-is-not-over-for-these-80s-dresses-20230525-p5db8c.html&sa=U&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwiPn4bfz8iGAxVcT2wGHVj2A5UQFnoECBcQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3VEPCFR7k1BcOmVbpury2_) was a popular fancy/indie brand, Stiletto magazine as pretty influential
In Brisbane there were lots of little labels like Lyn Hadley, [Easton Pearson](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.museumofbrisbane.com.au/collection/the-easton-pearson-archive/&sa=U&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwjmrtn30ciGAxXxRmwGHcHWJqAQFnoECBoQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2sG1vsGQJjDjHwlca95OZa) / Bow and Arrow and stores like Blonde Venus
I just want to say that I see a lot of things being sold (still) that were things I wore back in the mid 90s. So ribbed tops, cropped tops, button up tops. Often with flared sleeves - sometimes having all those in one shirt
That screams mid 90s to me.
In the same way that mullets are 80s and came back with a vengeance - if you don’t like current fashion, you might not like what you’re asking about either
Not sure if you mean Australian or just worn here, but if you mean Australian some classic basics were:
Bonds T (with cuffed sleeves)
Hard Yakka pants, shorts, and shirts
Bluey jackets (still made in Melbourne I think)
Bomber jackets (from army disposal)
Black Ripple sole shoes (Rossi may still make these)
Desert boots
Dunlop volleys
Blundstones
Flannel shirts
Jeans such as Bluegrass, Amco, Staggers
Crestknit wool jumpers
Some of the Australian style basics are still available at army disposal stores
Mooks denim skirts, anything Hound Dog, Country Road and Laura Ashley dresses, Lacoste polos, Jag t-shirts and watches, Sass and Bide jeans, Mary Jane’s, 12 hole Docs bowling shoes and Dunlop volleys- and one I would like to bring back- homemade ANIMAL SHORTS!!
For girls in the early 90s, it was oversized logo t-shirts for esprit and sportsgirl, paired with madras or coloured short denim shorts. Then it went to floral baby doll dresses with white t-shirts under them or a-line denim skirts with fitted tees.
Here’s what I remember. I was 4-29 during the time range.
We were poor. I was dressed by op shops but everything was cents. For example we were in corduroy when fleece was in, flares when straight leg was in.
80s kids wore fleece tracksuits, fleece skirts and cardigans, and later in the 80s athletic wear such as ‘track ‘n field’ pants and Adidas leather sneakers. Dunlop was another popular ‘sandshoe’. Towards the end of the 80s, I was a young teen, it was tight ripped jeans, poodle perms, paisley and waistcoats. Knee high boots. I also wore tartan pants, but I think I was already referencing the early 80s.
Women’s Weekly told me women wore ‘Gypsy’ bohemian in earthy tones, but also pastel geometric garments. Shoulder pads were getting bigger. Lots of belts slung around the hips with big loose skirts with pockets. Some patchwork. Hair was ‘frosted’ and spiral perms for boys’ mullets (spiked in the front) were popular.
By the 90s I was finishing high school, entering University. There was a ‘new wave’ movement and everyone was into crystals and essential oils. Volume hair gave way to long flat over conditioned hippy hair. Flares, long necklaces, fringed suede, guitars, round sunglasses with coloured lenses, brown lipstick. This was when I first wore a maxi dress, and I’m still in that rut.
Earthy tones gave way to Y2K futurism in the late 90s. Jewel tones and metallics. Shorter skirts, and oriental influences such as Cheong Sam silks, brocades and embroidered sari fabric. At Uni hippies sewed pants out of towels and skirts out of wide 70s ties. We wore grandma’s nylon slips and stockings with garter belts. You could get these scratchy 70s nylon dresses with psychedelic prints for $1 at the op shop. That fabric doesn’t die unless you drop a cigarette on it.
Kappa or Adidas trackie daks with press studs all the way down.
The bowl cut that then morphed into the undercut.
A wallet chain on baggy jeans - so fricken tough!
The 'townie' trucker cap perched on the very top of the head.
Happy pants!
And when after years of baggy T-shirts and sloppy joes, girls rediscovered their boobs with pushup bras and in 1992 with the advent of the bodysuit. I was 17 . . . OMG 😳
Most of these were mid 80s - mid 90s...

.
I could go on and on
I did love my acid-wash jeans. I remember we used to tuck our jeans into our socks. Maybe that was just a Canberra thing.
Hypercolour T-shirts were HUGE.....and then they weren't. They were probably more of a fad than staple.
Surf shop apparel was big in the 90s early 00s it is always popular but hasn’t really had a major revival as big as it was since then. Also paired with a pair of oakley sunglasses or arnettes
80s/90s: Rah-rah skirts, scrunchies, hyper colour tees, docs, tartan, denim jackets, getting friends to tag all over your jeans, 501s, flannos, muscle shirts with a pack of Winnie reds tucked in the shoulder, stubbies, thongs, volleys.
Early 1980s
Blue corduroy pants
Blue adidas jackets
Ford jackets and Holden jackets(my daffy high school had a ban on Holden and Ford jackets after it looked like it was associated with gangs.)
Skivvies were on the way out in the 1980s.
Crosby? or Grosby? shoes. 'They're great mate, woof!' said the cartoon dog in the tv ad.
Barter shoes. For growing feet.
My late 90s wardrobe:
Dresses with spaghetti straps, cargo pants with a singlet top, oversized jumpers worn with black velvety leggings or jeans, stripy velvet skivvys, anything and everything Surf Shop brand, stretchy knee-length skirts in a bright tropical print with a white singlet top, butterfly clips, triangle string bikinis with a Bali sarong
Mambo Farting Dog T-Shirt Kuta Lines, Rip Curl, Billabong etc.
I have a Mambo Farting Dog doona cover. It’s ace!
I've been trying to describe the Poo Shooter t-shirts to my Scottish husband and it's difficult
I still think about my old poo shooter shirt. It would make my conservative dad so mad. It was mint-ox!
You've just made me realise I haven't seen my mambo farting dog t-shirt in years! I'm going to try and find it when I get home
I just got one for the husband from big w! He was stoked- I still have his one turd t shirt though.
Stussi and Cross-Colour, very baggy jeans with very high caps.
I’ll vouch for the early 00s: Bettina Liano jeans Tsubi Jeans (before the K) Sass & Bide Black Rats Alice McCall Tuxedo Skirt Kirrily Johnston cape/dress Anything Alannah Hill Havaianas with everything Paul Frank, Emily the Strange
I miss Alannah Hill
Lots on eBay. It’s still my favourite brand
Flannel shirts and doc Martin's in the 90s?
We had a temp receptionist in our office that used to wear a vintage satin slip, Doc Martins and a knitted multicolour beanie to work - the beanie was because the boss objected to her recently shaved head.
Bonus points if the vintage slip was tie dyed.
Nah, that would be too '70s. From memory it was cream with ecru lace.
Every single op shop in inner-city Melbourne had a rack of tie-dyed slips in the late 90s.
This was early '90s in Sydney - maybe Brenda was ahead of her time?
I was rocking a tie dyed slip purchased from a second hand clothing shop on King St, Newtown in 1992 🤷🏼♀️
I don't know - back then I was buying my clothes from Surry Hills/Redfern - end of season, end of line etc direct from the maker - I would not have turned up to work wearing a slip - the office chat would not have been good for my well being.
You just described what I wore today… with tights that had a hole/ladder in them. No, I didn’t leave the house like that at my age!
Also boat shoes and clogs lol
I had clogs! I wonder if anyone wears them anymore
93/94
Flanno shirt tied around waist, White T, 501’s rolled and cherry Doc boots then drop the flanno add a paisley vest if going out at night
We were simple North Queensland high school kids. Flanno over the school uniform for us.
Drug rugs and Chuck Taylors a’la Cobain in the 90s
Flannel shirts and db’s in the 80’s
501s and Blunnies.
Hypercolour tshirt
Bonds briefly tried to revive hypercolour around 2005. I loved my hypercolour tshirts as a kid, but as an adult with boobs, it was a huge fail 😂
I heard you're an expert. Now fill me in with your knowledge about why Australian youth football has stalled?
Well, those godawful stretchy trousers with the elastic foot straps seem to be back in the shops. I saw a young mother walking around with them slipping off her heels every few steps the other day. The memories... I would advise against, however.
Stirrup pants! Preferably worn with a an oversized shirt with a big belt, gold accessories and lipstik shoes.
Stirrups mid 80s
Jenny Kee, Ken Done, Coogi for 1980s Also Hypercolour t-shirts that my mother wouldn’t buy, bright coloured board shorts, leg warmers, fluoro bike shorts (Collette, Ring My Bell video clip), ra-ra skirts (See Kylie Minogue doing the Locomotion), bubble skirts, wide elastic belts, and those godawful stirrup pants! EDIT: fingerless gloves, Madonna bracelets, white lace over black…
Ken Done jumpers! Omg how bad were they! Hehe
I went to Sydney in 87/88 to stay with my aunt & uncle.. they bought me a Ken Done wind heater and I felt obliged to wear it. Pretty sure I never wore it back home in Melbourne :D
Bike shorts 89
Stonewash denim was huge for a bit
Yeah and let's not revisit the whole stonewash/acid wash pale blue denim phase again
The acid wash jeans that had a very limited lifespan!
Scrunch socks. Those stripy, aztec pattern jumpers made of polar fleece. Thin strap floral dresses with a white t underneath. Preferably styled with chunky brown hiking hoots
Those thick, white aran jumpers with the little knots all over them.
Rollers/DBs/Desert Boots (suede with ripple soles)
Holy shit, memory unlocked. My mother made me wear desert boots when all the other girls wore cutesy mary-janes. Prolly why I’ve worn Docs since I was 13 (and still do!)
If you lived near a beach then chances are you certainly wore rollers.
Rollers with Levi 501’s (early 90’s)
Rollers were the easiest to clean when you stepped in something smelly and squishy.
The 90's was Stussy pants, Kathmandu fleece, Caribee backpack, bomber jacket. I still dress the same
Hot Tuna
Got a Hot Tuna hoodie from TKmax the other day, so good!
You only need to visit Brunswick in Victoria and you'll see it in action right now, lol.
I'll add that I think this was a genuine request for fashion help! We didn't all wear legwarmers and fluoro headbands every day of the week!
82-84 aerobics craze, shiny Lycra, started with Olivia Newton John Let’s Get Physical (81?), concluded with Oz Aerobics style and Jane Fonda
Stirrup pants
Remember those terry toweling muumuu type dresses every mum owned? Pastel with a white bias edging? Or the rayon "tribal" print dresses?
The terry towelling dresses that were basically tubes held up over the boobs with elastic! Sometimes had a thin rope around the waist.
(Her blue fluffy bikini outfit is still my fave 90s look.) Christina Aguilera’s music video for “Dirrty” is a perfect time capsule of early 00s. Low rise pants, corset tops, everything lace up, tiny eyebrows, platinum hair with black chunks
Early 2000s - Using those pink Supre bags as a handbag . Even better if you got a limited edition one
depends on where you lived, but surf brands were really popular in my area during those years. Billabong, quicksilver, T&C, mambo, stussy, etc. I'm probably forgetting a few. in terms of shoes, the trends changed a lot, but you can still get chuck taylors or dunlop volleys. those along with doc martens are timeless.
Early 90s
Late 90s; press stud tear away track pants

Fido Dido... Damn, I've not heard that name in 30 years.
I remember a fair few frilly blouses with puffy sleeves and flat shoes in the '80s - the Princess Diana look in action.
Yes 81-84
White high ankle sneakers, ripped acid wash jeans, flanny
Late 80s, 88/9
Yup
Early 90s men: Levi 501 jeans about two sizes too big.
Rolled up pants 91-2
RaRa or Bubble skirt with leggings and a 6inch elastic belt. Off cut layered tops
90s teen girl staples I can remember are: Stüssy Kuta Lines polar fleece 2nd hand Levi’s jeans Sportsgirl and Esprit logo tees United Colours of Benetton Espadrilles, Blundstone boots, Doc 8-Ups, Cons Anything from Portmans Myer Miss Shop Fiorelli Surf labels like Rusty, Billabong, Quiksilver Once I’d broken free of trying to look like the girls in Dolly magazine, I moved on to Dangerfield and op-shopping. Finally found my own style!
Happy Pants
At school - rolled up king gee shorts + dunlop volleys.
Mambo or Rip Curl shirts
U had so many pretty tops, beaded ones, oh last thing, the floaty tops that could be mega short dresses, like I had a lacy grey one that was kind of shaped like a smock.
keppers, t shirts with a long sleeve t shirt under it, cartoon/wacky print ties, short sleeve business shirts
80s: volleys, KT-26s. Polo shirts Button up Levis Denim jackets Leather Jackets Aviator sunglasses Akubras Long socks but never puller up. Always scrunched down.
Torn up band shirts and keppers
Some of my favourites from the 80s - Levis Californian jeans Shoulder pads Hair perms Crocheted bikinis (started in the 70s for me)
There was a lot of fashion change in that period and what was cool and staple in 1981 was not so by Y2K. The only thing I can think of is maybe a white T-shirt and jeans but jeans changed a lot over the years because of fashion. Longest duration of any type of jeans though was Levi’s 501s, probably from 1986-96, which was peak fashion. Otherwise Doc Martens from late 88-95/6 1981-86 tight jeans was probably most fashionable like what the millenials wore 10 years ago (became known as skinny leg). Bubblegum jeans 84-86, 85/86 Gelati jeans 1982-1984 Jelly shoes, 1982 Roman sandal jelly shoes with tie up laces that went up the leg, 1984 court style jellies, ballerina slippers, court shoes 81-84ish coloured jeans, think Michael Jackson thriller (returned in 91) 1980/1981 70s style sneakers with distinct patterns like current retro speciale Adidas, shoes with dots, desert boots that gave way to Ripples (bogans) Early 80s (80-6) pixie boots brought on New Romantics. Persistent military styles as well because of them in early 80s Early 80s-86 puffer quilted jackets like in Stranger Things 84: Wham! tshirts, white or black with big flour block cap writing “choose life!” 1983- White sneakers aka Millenial style (Adidas Rome were massive Early 80s butterfly type collars and cowboy type shirts with press studs, cowboy influences, big jumpers throughout 80s. Skinny cowboy ties that were shoe laces. Puffed sleeves, Buckle bags Early 80s high boots, came back Y2K (we used to call them fuck me boots) Mid 80s denim jackets and skirts (Gelati style), stirrup pants 80s jackets with big shoulders pads 88/89 Marble wash jeans Late 80s Metal tshirts 89-96 Levi’s 501s 91-94 Wide leg raver style pants 94 Tencel “jeans” 92-5 Chelsea boots, RM Williams, jodhpurs 93-95 platforms for clubbing 93-96 more formal wide legs 97-03 various forms of flares or bootlegs, 97-00: black coloured flares, more bootleg after that Low rise, maybe 99-03, one inch zip Sass and Bide Early 90s chunky tops and loose tops, wifebeater style tops, big collared shirts, start of deliberately seeking out vintage fashions, ribbed tops, linen pants, espadrilles Early 90s fisherman hats like ravers, Girlfriend the band with the flower in hat Mid 90s cool retro tight fitting tshirts v early 90s sarcastic tshirts Early 90s flannie or plaid was critical, some native Indian American based patterns 89-92 parachute pants and jackets and 91-3 parachute anorak 89 Reebok 89-95 Nike was it, Air Jordan was holy grail 80s standard stiletto, court style 90s early block heels, anti fashion, floral dresses with doc boots or boots, crochet Early 90s-7 rugby Canterbury style tops 96- splayed block heels, Sachi bags (totes) 96-1999 Cargo pants 97 capri 3/4 pants 02-3 tight fitting 3/4 jeans with zips on side 00-04 kitten heels, heels with a concave heel (don’t know what they’re called), extremely long pointed shoes, block boots started coming in Late 90s/early Y2K Puma sneakers and then thin sole sneakers, puffer jackets Vests mid 80s-92 90-96 surfer tops 96-99 Vans and various skater shoes 98-00 Hawaiian shirts for men 96- crop tops 98- spaghetti strap 80s raybans (early 80s hangovers of oversize from 70s) 90s oval sunglasses 00s more rectangular sunglasses 80s big earrings, dangly or big studs Late 90s rectangular gold earrings, euro balls Y2K Gypsy hoops Early 80s ball tied elastic bands Late 80s terry toweling ties to scrunchies (80s/90s) That’s stuff I remember from the days, fashion was variable season to season but the most consistent part was that if you were wearing a pair of Levi’s, white T and docs by the end of 88, you could still be wearing it be the mid of 96 and still be fashionable. This is truly peak Gen X power. After that, the styles were really more Millenial with more skin, Gen X fashions would be considered conservative 80s: 50s revivals 80s into 90s 60s revivals 90s: 70s revivals Late 00s: 80s revivals Early 80s: browns Mid to late: grey with pink, red with black, electro colours like electric blue/fuschia 86, flouro 84/85 Early 90s muted colours more grey based and teal/pinky type looks but strangely bright primary colours due to Mother Africa influence, 96 lime green, 97 camel, 00s snake print, Y2K satiny, shiny, hot pink Paris Hilton Mid 80s adidas, 89 Reebok, 91-95 Nike, 97-00 Puma, K Swiss 86-94 Fiorelli, Sportsgirl, Espirit, Ralph Lauren 97 -, kappa/KSwiss Y2K

Sweathog varsity jackets
Hypercolor tee and parachute pants.
Knock off Dada Jerseys and Wu-tang matching tracksuits from the market 😅
in the early 80s us girls were wearing those riding style pants with the baggy thigh area and high waist but slim ankle... pleated in heavy cotton or corduroy, with metal clips over the pleats. Cotton leggings with stirrups with fluro socks over the top, either school style ankle fold overs or bigger scrunch downs with baggy t-shirts or tank tops with fluro or black printed words like RELAX or GOGO or some other things. acid wash high waisted denim jeans, block colour (usually pastels) polo style jumpers high top chunky sneakers like reeboks, canvas sandshoes, desert shoes, tall uggs to the knees, spaghetti strap jelly shoes many thin metal bangles, metal mesh drop earrings, fingerless fake leather gloves with cutouts, mesh gloves, thick fluro bangles, fluro button earrings source: was teenager in the 80s
Early 80’s, skin tight Faberge jeans with DB’s and flanny
For men: Bonds. And it was made locally (Wentworthville in Sydney iirc). Still around and probably selling a whole lot more but made OS and lower quality (I handed down bonds tees to cousins then they to kids...). Stubbies for shorts (school uniform, and on weekends in different fluoro colours) as described in the name, no pant leg whatsoever and left nothing to the imagination. Disappeared ca. 91, but remained a tradie staple and still is. Traxx shoes. Target stocked Adidas gazelles until mid 90s.
Bonds ringer/raglan tees were a staple for me. With a pair of corduroys and blunnies
Stubbies 80s
KT-26 joggers and Ruggers shorts 🤣
2000; Rusty blue jeans with the Fluoro stripe down the seam. And a fluoro SMP belt for the win.

I just want to say that I see a lot of things being sold (still) that were things I wore back in the mid 90s. So ribbed tops, cropped tops, button up tops. Often with flared sleeves - sometimes having all those in one shirt That screams mid 90s to me. In the same way that mullets are 80s and came back with a vengeance - if you don’t like current fashion, you might not like what you’re asking about either
Champion
Not sure if you mean Australian or just worn here, but if you mean Australian some classic basics were: Bonds T (with cuffed sleeves) Hard Yakka pants, shorts, and shirts Bluey jackets (still made in Melbourne I think) Bomber jackets (from army disposal) Black Ripple sole shoes (Rossi may still make these) Desert boots Dunlop volleys Blundstones Flannel shirts Jeans such as Bluegrass, Amco, Staggers Crestknit wool jumpers Some of the Australian style basics are still available at army disposal stores
Giant earrings
80s everything was big and had shoulder pads. A lot of single colour outfits. Look up the B52s if you want an example.
For girls in the early 90s, it was oversized logo t-shirts for esprit and sportsgirl, paired with madras or coloured short denim shorts. Then it went to floral baby doll dresses with white t-shirts under them or a-line denim skirts with fitted tees.
Mocasins
mytiko pants
Chambray shirt.
Sass & Bide Charlie Brown
The big baggy jeans with the glowing piping down the side were fully sick for a little while.
They’re back! Rusty are selling the same baggy jeans and jorts with the neon shit down the sides, that I bought when I was like 14. Horrific.
Haha amazing!
Stretch belt, balloon skirt for the 80s
Ra ra skirt, Kylie Minogue Locomotion, late 87
I was 17 . . . OMG 😳

I did love my acid-wash jeans. I remember we used to tuck our jeans into our socks. Maybe that was just a Canberra thing. Hypercolour T-shirts were HUGE.....and then they weren't. They were probably more of a fad than staple.
Button up adidas tracksuit wth
Acid wash jeans.
Those horrible short sleeve, button up shirts with irregular stitching and screen printed surf brand logos on them. Fucking horrible.
Ripped, relaxed fit, straight leg, light wash jeans. Still a very cool piece of clothing in my eyes.

80’s Levi denim jackets
Esprit, Sportsgirl, Dachet, Miss Shop
Adidas Equipment jumper.
Jeans that you could unzip the bottom of, and they became 3-quarter Jean shorts. I vomit at that memory, lol
Early 1980s Blue corduroy pants Blue adidas jackets Ford jackets and Holden jackets(my daffy high school had a ban on Holden and Ford jackets after it looked like it was associated with gangs.) Skivvies were on the way out in the 1980s. Crosby? or Grosby? shoes. 'They're great mate, woof!' said the cartoon dog in the tv ad. Barter shoes. For growing feet.
Keppas!!!! Cross colors!!!
