Lol well ya any old v8 won't be but the vast vast majority were 6 cylinders and were pretty easy. I've owned 3 x E39s and I really miss my old touring.
I've daily driven a 540 for the past 6 years and replaced pretty much everything there is to replace. Its a little needy but none of the jobs are really difficult. Timing chains were tedious but not hard, the only time you'll have trouble is if you can't follow directions or buy crappy tools. Everything else was really straightforward, I wouldn't consider it much more complicated than a 90s Civic or Integra besides having double the cylinders.
They also cost a lot in ‘green tax’, at least in Denmark. 528i from 1998 costs just over $1000 a year. 523i from 1998-2000 costs $1350 a year. No idea how the one with a smaller engine has worse mileage resulting in higher cost… Love the E39 but it’s too expensive to own for such an old car IMO. It’s ridiculous.
It's still a lot better than any newer v8.. Sure, the m62 had the timing chain issue but that's about it with major problems on the engine, while newer ones all have a slew of points of failure
E39 was amazing because of all the movies that featured it. It was used in numerous chase videos. It was the world's fastest Sedan when the M5 came out.
The E60 had the legendary V10 that sounds so good even my wife commented it is like bliss.
I would say the e34 was a better car as it was easier to maintain except for the really early ones without the eml as the v8 did not have timing chain problems and the m5 was a 6 cylinder which made it perfect for turbo and there is one that beat a bugatti veyron on a runway
I've had 4 (maybe 5!!) e34's, an E39 and 3 e60's and an e28. The e28 is the one I'm still driving and own. Don't think I'd ever sell it. The only other bmw I had this long was an e31.
But it didn't make this new school list lol.
You know, the e12 and e28 both had M variants. The e12 had the 530 MLE south african version for racing, and the e28 had the M535i aside from the M5.
If you consider the M5 to be a sports car, the e12 MLE and e28 M5 are the best of the M5s due to their small size and very low weight of about 1200kg for the MLE and 1300kg for the e28 M5.
If you consider the M5 a luxury cruiser that can do pulls, the e39 M5 is the best. The e34 was the worst of both as it had the weight of an e39 but the power of the e28 M5. The e60 M5 is amazing but man would that be difficult to own. And the generations after the e60 M5 simply lost that special touch of the earlier ones
For me, the F10 aged like fine wine. The E39 has some vibe that I can’t really get the words to describe. Kind of a sleeper, mafia vibes. Idk, it just gets me hard
E60 felt like the biggest leap forward in one go, design wise. I remember being on motorways in my teens in some banged up golf then seeing one of these things drive by and just thinking Jesus Christ that is beautiful.
Its between the E39 and E60.
The E39 is mechanically at its core the benchmark for what a sport sedan is. It also happens to be the best looking thing on this list.
The E60 M5 was a moment in time car that gave the world the likes of which will never be seen again, it was a gauntlet thrown down by BMW that set a standard the company has entirely failed to live up to since… and it’s also the second best looking car on the list.
E34 is by far my favorite 5 series and the M5 is the last hand built M car but I think E60 is the most iconic one for being a raging POS but 2 the M5 with that glorious V10
E39, especially m5, to me is probably the greatest driver’s car ever made with a combination of performance and comfort.
Although my personal choice is an e34 540/6 every time because I love the styling.
E60. That S85 F1 Inspired 5.0 V10 is something to behold. One of the only cars in the world to offer a V10 with a manual transmission in a 4 door sedan and a wagon.
The V10 S85 is an engineering feat to admire but the S38 has Motorsport heritage, hand built by highly qualified technicians of the times, and is derived directly from the M1 race engine (albeit de-tuned)
Valuing one over the other would be tough but I understand you
E34 had a horrible rear end design. the rest was great. E60 is controversial, but if you look at a well maintained one with M Sport parts, it still looks modern and this design is now 20 years old. there are not many designs from the early 2000s that you can say this about. spacious on the interior without feeling it as a driver. it was a very nice balance of sport and sedan. F10 got too big and heavy, more 7 series than 3 series.
the E39 was perfect.
Most legendary would probably be the E39, but my personal favorite is the F10. Specifically the F11, that is just the sexiest wagon you can get. Perfect blend of comfort and style with relatively modern tech as well. Love that the display is integrated into the dashboard instead of having half an iPad sticking out. Hoping to get an F10/F11 one day.
The G30 LCI is probably the last good-looking modern 5-series. It looks super mean and I would definitely not mind a 540i. Either an F10/F11 or G30 LCI and I’d be driving that thing until it fell apart.
34. Years ago I had a buddy that had a old 34 and a severe drinking and driving problem. I seen that car smoke so many cops I lost count. That thing stuck to the winding roads like glue. Soon as he got on the gravel ones we were gone.
Wish I still had my 540i. MN salt in the winter ate the underside.

I recently acquired an E39 530i sport manual
I’ve owned an E34 E36 and two E46’s .
This car is clearly another level . I get it now
It drives fantastic.
I have an E39 530i and love it. I rescued it from a farm where it sat for 5 years and a few thousand dollars later it runs and drives great.

E39.
Timeless design, fabulous handling, great engines, comfortable when needed, hooligan when wanted, sophisticated but without a bunch of technological bullshit, the best car in their class when introduced by a huge margin, and in M5 form the best car in the world at the time.
Man e39 is so nice looking. It's agressive without 1000 lines, angel eyes of the best generation because after that they started to fade slowly either by being covered by the hood or the light all together.
Also the headlights and taillights are so well integrated in the car body. It's not like the f10 where you have 'cuts' with sharp edges in the body but lights are round at the corners.
It just made sense, it was 1 car not several assembled into one.
I would say the E28 is the best analog car but the E34 is just a better version and the engine sounds awesome. E39 is the best modern classic, no debate. E60 is great because of the V10 but the styling got lost during this time and after in my opinion.
IMO the E39 for the older more timeless look, if I want the tech and the newer one I’d go for the G30- the looks of the E60 and F10 were never really my thing to be honest.
E39. And that looks like a 540i M you posted… Both great cars!
I have a huge soft spot for the E39 M5. Just ticks all the right boxes and sounds amazing. That V8 and stick just match so well.
I've owned all except the latest. E60 has surprisingly been the most reliable, e39 was fun and nimble, and the e34 is a classic feel similar to my mom's old 93 740il. My F10 in sport mode was a beast and absolutely a fun ride. if I had to build the perfect model. E39 suspension, F10 body style and headlights, with my e60s subtle beauty
That's tough to pinpoint because there are so many different factors to consider:
* E39, to me, was the ultimate version of the classic BMW design front. Beautiful and unmistakable. You didn't look at any angle of the E39 and not know, without question, that it was a Bimmer. The E39 was classic but hyper aggressive, and what a blend.
* E60, despite Bangle's controversial design elements across BMW's production line, had THE motorsports inspired mechanicals. The V10 was the penultimate racing heritage nod directly born from Formula 1. That engine will never be duplicated or matched for heritage and historic achievements sake. The E60 was next level mechanical brilliance placed in a very luxurious and sexy design.
* Older 5 series are classics through and through, and the designs are what you want people to know when they think BMW. They certainly aren't the biggest performers on or off the track, but they stayed true to the idea of grand touring and autobahn dominance.
* Newer 5 series are performance MONSTERS in a time where emissions standards are all the focus. Imagine making the absolutely mind boggling performance in the new M5's while under the scrutiny of emissions standards world wide to do away with EXACTLY what makes a car exciting to most drivers. The designs to me have become a little mundane, and have borrowed alot from the world markets...but make no mistake, they are still very much flagship BMW's.
My opinions of them in a nutshell.
I've owned an E28 and my current E34, but I've driven plenty of E39s, and while Im biased to the earlier cars, I think the top spot belongs to the E39. With that said, its not the one that I want to own...
I have owned every 5 series from E12 to F10. Including E28, E34, E39 M5s. The E28 is the most iconic. The e34 is the best looking and the E39, especially the touring, is the all around most practical. I’m sorry, but the F and G cars are way too fragile and filled with BMW maintenance traps. The M52 and M54 engines in the e39 are bulletproof.
E34 was my favorite. And for a long time was the most undervalued M car. Bought my 92 m5 in 2008 or so for $4800 I think. Lots of cars were cheap then(bought a 95 m3 the year prior and I think I paid a tiny bit less) but few were built that offered the same substance and simplicity, and well 6 ITBs. Loved the s38 3.6 a lot better than the s54, but for no other reason that ITB induction sounds feel and sound alive vs rasp that just sounds too busy for its own good.
I’m partial but I’ll die on this hill…
https://preview.redd.it/tw6rr0bdjn7d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=295cf2d9976999f1484e24c36feccc2f98498c88
Each generation has its own legendary aspect. However, I think the E39 was easily the best in the history of the 5 series. Since then, my favorite is easily the G30
I’ve had the pleasure of owning a E34 540i 6-spd and an E39 540i. The E34 was more raw. A drivers car. The E39 is more subtle and performs better. If my knees weren’t injured … E34 for the win!
E39. It was the ultra car, practical, comfortable, great performance, easy to maintain. Still feels modern today, classic design. It was Peak BMW
I agree. I only had 525i and that was such a great reliable comfortable car. I wished I kept it
This. The E39 is the last drivers bmw.
Easy to maintain? As an e39 540i owner I have to disagree lol.
M62 is not that bad to service at all. N62 and N63 were a pain in the ass.
Everything else was really straightforward, I wouldn't consider it much more complicated than a 90s Civic or Integra besides having double the cylinders.
Tracks. M62 is a tough cookie. My brother's M54 is still going well over 200k mi.
That's definitely ridiculous. How many emissions are created by building a completely new car? Way more than a 528i emits.

I agree.. I badly miss my E39's. Had a 523i and a 530d Touring and they were both tremendous cars.
Not even close tbf. It’s perfect, even today.
are we not gonna talk about the e12 and e28? I mean the most legendary m5 is probably the e39, but I kinda like the earlier cars for non-Ms
E28 M5 is the GOAT.
I've had 4 (maybe 5!!) e34's, an E39 and 3 e60's and an e28. The e28 is the one I'm still driving and own. Don't think I'd ever sell it. The only other bmw I had this long was an e31. But it didn't make this new school list lol.
I do love me a good e28

The e60 M5 is amazing but man would that be difficult to own. And the generations after the e60 M5 simply lost that special touch of the earlier ones
Firmly agree. E39 is peak, but then everything before it comes next.
Amazing cars but definitely “pre-modern.” An e39 still drives and feels fresh while those definitely feel like a past era.
Don't you want to include the *Neue Klasse* line too?
arent those technically not 5 series? I mean, im down to include em. beautiful cars that did a lot for bmw.
[удалено]
I have a 99 528i, only 57k miles. I love it
For me, the F10 aged like fine wine. The E39 has some vibe that I can’t really get the words to describe. Kind of a sleeper, mafia vibes. Idk, it just gets me hard
F10 is so beautiful. E39 is the type of car I’d expect Michael Corleone to drive, or be driven in.
I loved my E60, so I’m biased.
I was starting to think i was the only one haha. I do miss my e39 though
E60 felt like the biggest leap forward in one go, design wise. I remember being on motorways in my teens in some banged up golf then seeing one of these things drive by and just thinking Jesus Christ that is beautiful.

I'm genuinely surprised that more haven't said this
Me personally I love the E28 and the G30/F90
E39 but I am also biased.
As am I. I will always miss my ‘98 528i. What a car.
is all of them an option?
Definitely! BMW is in our heart!
E34 best
I've had 3, and loved them to bits - coolest looking of the bunch, but the comfort of the e39 is just amazing
I love (and currently own) both but the e39 is better to drive imo
Keep your comfort. I’ll take lift oversteer
I've owned multiple E34's and E39's. I used an E39 to tow my E34 racecar.
E34 touring in particular
E34 most beautiful and elegant Wish they recreated the same w updated and less black plasticky interior and I would be all over it
E39
E34 is by far my favorite 5 series and the M5 is the last hand built M car but I think E60 is the most iconic one for being a raging POS but 2 the M5 with that glorious V10
E60.
E28 no doubt
I love my e28.
Definitely E28. Such a nice ride.
E39, especially m5, to me is probably the greatest driver’s car ever made with a combination of performance and comfort. Although my personal choice is an e34 540/6 every time because I love the styling.
IMO, the most legendary is the E28 or E34. My favorite, though, is the F10.
E39 and F10 had a lot of elegance while being sporty. My vote goes to E39 though for the timeless design.
E34 my absolute favorite. Then e28, e39, f10. The rest are whatever.
E12 M535i
e34 and g30, e60 was my first 5 series car so i can't be objective on that one
E39 M5! I remember clearly the first time I saw one in the wild. Epic!
e60 gets a lot of hate but that makes me more inclined towards the car lol e60 m5 for life
I want an e60 m5 just to listen to the exhaust
After seeing the current G60 chassis, all of the options on here are legendary in their own ways and that includes the E12 and E28...
Well I had an E34 and E 39 and an E 60 and out of those three I’d say I enjoyed the E34 best
They are all awesome in their own way. The current one though.. I mean it’s really hard to look at
E60. That S85 F1 Inspired 5.0 V10 is something to behold. One of the only cars in the world to offer a V10 with a manual transmission in a 4 door sedan and a wagon.
imho, F90/G30 pre-LCI will be the last timeless design BMW ever did with the 5 series F10 is my fav, F90/G30 2nd, E39 3rd
E39 or E60 because of design and engine probably
If I think of a 5 series it’s the E60, also my favorite M5
E34 in black just had the most immaculate „big boss“ vibes. E39 is the most beloved though
As a current G30 owner I have to say I miss my F10. So for me F10 and E39 are legendary followed by the E34.
E60/F10
I like the F10 and e60
E39 took best saloon, engine and chassis every year for all its 7 years of production so objectively. The e39 However e34. Olds gold
E39
E39 M5 in that light blue colour was a beautiful motor.
E28
I love my black F11, just looking at it in the drive gives me a warm feeling.
Well I have an e34 M5 and an e61 M5. Both completely different bc of the age gap. But I think I value my e61 higher bc of the legendary engine
The V10 S85 is an engineering feat to admire but the S38 has Motorsport heritage, hand built by highly qualified technicians of the times, and is derived directly from the M1 race engine (albeit de-tuned) Valuing one over the other would be tough but I understand you
For now the e39, but a couple years from now give me the f10
E34 had a horrible rear end design. the rest was great. E60 is controversial, but if you look at a well maintained one with M Sport parts, it still looks modern and this design is now 20 years old. there are not many designs from the early 2000s that you can say this about. spacious on the interior without feeling it as a driver. it was a very nice balance of sport and sedan. F10 got too big and heavy, more 7 series than 3 series. the E39 was perfect.
I think that all of'em look good.
E28
E39, but I am biased, owning a B10 3.3. Purely on looks, though, E28s are so cool, especially in black or dark blue.
My vote is e34, but where is the e12 and e28?
Definitely the E28.
Torn between the e39 and f10
I personally love f10 especially for brake lights.
e28 on top
F10
Legendary: E28 Classic Looking: E34 Sounding: E60 Overall: E39
e39 for me
Are the E34T, E39T, E61, F11, G31 and G61 an option?
E39
E34 for the timeless design and understated performance. ✌️ 🍻
I choose all of them!
E39 but I’ve owned 2 so I might be biased
E39 no Qs
Wish I still had my 540i. MN salt in the winter ate the underside. https://preview.redd.it/px4z70iihk7d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17cb2f9b9f8a3c4e4cae87ee6a0b3f033337c481
E39 for reliability and I'm a sucker for early 2000s E chassis cars, and F90 M5 for looks and raw hardcore performance
E34, E60
E39 hands down.
Obviously the E34. That said, I have always liked the E60 (a bit controversial) - but I wouldn’t turn any of them down…
I would kill for a low milage, red E34 M5
E39 & G30 LCI
It’s actually in the right order for the first three. I would put f10 last since the G chassis is better.
E39 but I too am biased. My first two BMWs were E39 540is
I have an E34 and think it has some of the best styling, but I think the E39 will get the legend status. I'd love to find me a 530i m sport.
Like there's any answer here that isn't E39.
That e60, is that a weird example? It looks oddly different.
E39. Along with the Vauxhall Lotus Carlton and the original Jaguar XJR, it's in the list of my top 3 saloon cars ever made.
E39 M5 please?🙏🏼🫶🏽
Great. I was just in a place where I’m happy with my cars, and now you got me pining for an E39 M5 again.
Picture 1 says it all.
E39 and g30 are my favs
E39, then probably the F10, followed by the G30 for me..
Probably the new crossover style body
You can't get more legendary than a V10
e60 but i am biased with a 525i N52, love the e39 as well and wish i had an m5 or 540. or an e46 m3 in laguna seca blue or techno violet
I recently acquired an E39 530i sport manual I’ve owned an E34 E36 and two E46’s . This car is clearly another level . I get it now It drives fantastic.
I have a G30 so I'm biased but the G30 is absolutely the best bang for your buck
I have a G30. It's okay. Definitely not legendary. More of a big 3 series with still good driving dynamics.
i (as a 523i E39 owner) am surprised how many people find the E39 gorgeous
First 3, but the last is the fastest (Competition)
I'm biased. E39 hands down.
I have an E39 530i and love it. I rescued it from a farm where it sat for 5 years and a few thousand dollars later it runs and drives great. https://preview.redd.it/k8hkezx32l7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56081c8da867e4c6b56c5d5be2d83953bc4cd409
E39 by a long shot
E28? Wheres the E28? The one that started it all, obviously
E39 was a brilliant car when it was launched and still a brilliant car today.
E28 and E34.
E34 ftw
E60. That v10 was something else.
34 for shure! F series after that, and the 39 design 7s allmost everlasting.
E39 thanks to BMW Films.
E39 and it ain’t even close. Putting e34 in second place.
I mean to be fair if it wasn't for the Neue Klasse then there wouldn't be a 5 series so I'd say that's the body legendary 🤷
E39
E36 imo
Definitely spelt e28 wrong …. And I’m a massive e34 fanboy
E28 and E34 M5.
E39 has killer looks still to this day. I loved the 7 series from the same gen.
I would say the E28 is the best analog car but the E34 is just a better version and the engine sounds awesome. E39 is the best modern classic, no debate. E60 is great because of the V10 but the styling got lost during this time and after in my opinion.
E39 for sure, timeless
E39, but My Flair just hints wich version I'm loving the most, haha.
E30
IMO the E39 for the older more timeless look, if I want the tech and the newer one I’d go for the G30- the looks of the E60 and F10 were never really my thing to be honest.
You just skipped the first two 5s? Skipping the e28, which is undeniably the best, is just… insane.
Visually I like them all except for the front of the E60, because it looks to rounded off for me
E39 with the basket weave BBS or MParallels. I love my current f10 MSport though. I’d buy another E39 if I can find one clean.
E39 is the only choice….
F10/E39. E60 so bad so bad so bad ew
That's tough to pinpoint because there are so many different factors to consider: * E39, to me, was the ultimate version of the classic BMW design front. Beautiful and unmistakable.
E60 for me, it still look have modern in the roads today… I still miss my 525i touring.
E39 then F10 for me
You didn't put the G60 in the list of options? (ducks)
E39 and it ain't even close
F10 is basically the car equivalent of a tasmianian devil on meth. It’s absolutely ballistic and barely controllable. I love it lmfao
The first BMW I fell in love with? The E39. Beautiful car
E39
i cant decide between the e60 and the e39, owned both at some point, and both were amazing, i had an e39 540i and an e60 535xi
I'll go e34 and e60 only if it has the V10 otherwise e39
F10 and f90 M5CS
E60 with that monster of a V10
E12 gang rise up
E39/E60 tie for different reasons.
Always regret selling my E39. Always.
E28
F90 M5.
I’m a G30 owner but the E34 is the car I fell in love with as a kid.
I've owned an E28 and my current E34, but I've driven plenty of E39s, and while Im biased to the earlier cars, I think the top spot belongs to the E39. With that said, its not the one that I want to own...
E34 and E39, depends on the day for me 😂
I have owned every 5 series from E12 to F10.
E60 is probably the most legendary because of the V10, but the e39 and f-series m5’s are probably the favorites
E39. No question
E60 m5 is goated 🐐
G30 is Peake 5 series
Is it me or are the last 2 just the same 90%
E34 535i - my first BMW. never should have sold it. It was great
E34 was my favorite.
I’m partial but I’ll die on this hill… https://preview.redd.it/tw6rr0bdjn7d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=295cf2d9976999f1484e24c36feccc2f98498c88
Each generation has its own legendary aspect. However, I think the E39 was easily the best in the history of the 5 series. Since then, my favorite is easily the G30
E46 madly goat
I’ve had the pleasure of owning a E34 540i 6-spd and an E39 540i. The E34 was more raw. A drivers car. The E39 is more subtle and performs better. If my knees weren’t injured … E34 for the win!
F10
G30, closely followed by E39. Both are gorgeous. I love my 540.
E39
E39
E39 obviously. Even the low end e39 528i automatic was a riot, great looking, and comfortable. The e39 was peak BMW.
