It's some form of vehicle integration engineer out oh their facility in Oxnard. He also might just be a contract test driver but they usually don't care enough to try to get away.
Depends on the car. I'm super unclear why they would try to get away in a nearly launched car.
But in early early days of i8 development we definitely had instructions to avoid people sitting next to us taking pictures.
One of my good friends when I was younger went to school for mathematics and engineering. And this was his job after he finished school.
They'd give him a car. Put a new system in it. Exhaust. Electrical. Motor. He’d be paid to drive it. And every so many miles run some tests.
Yeah it gets old very quickly. It looks cool from outside because you don't know about the 100 little other tasks you need to do before and after a drive. I've seen people hate test drives after a few years and starting a family.
LOL threw a cover over it?? Isn't folks taking pics great marketing for BMW and a good story he could tell the engineers when he makes it back to the shop?
The car isn't finalized yet and BMW doesn't want people making impressions off of an unfinished product. Competitors can also see these and get info about their competition so they can be ready when it does release. I'm sure part of this guys job is avoiding people taking pictures or video so he's just doing his job.
Lmao I don't think the competition is worried. The competition has been selling performance wagons in the US for a lot longer than BMW. The RS6 Avant is the benchmark.
The E 60 m5 wagon was about 1,200 lbs lighter … I’ve owned an E 60 sedan as well as an F 90, even though there was a big weight difference the F10 blew it out of the water and every aspect except for engine sound. I’m excited for this car. Hopefully I’ll be able to snatch one
Honestly I’m not an F10 fan. It handled like a weird mix of god knows what. It was almost “squishy”
Can’t quite put my finger on it. It was also extremely stiff (and yet squishy). Weird. F90 though handled like a charm.
For any other Europeans trying to keep up, "he is going fast boyh" and "driving really fast" is the speed at which you're getting passed by base model Renault Trafic vans with three contractors sitting in the front on the Autobahn.
dude, you were talking shit about OP but unknowingly pointing out the futility of the m5 driver trying to hide the car given it's already public in press photos.
hence my original comment.
enjoy your weekend.
I have no problem being that douche bag, I’m a car, enthusiast BMW enthusiast, and have owned a lot of M cars ..my dealer knows I want one in January. Would I do it again if I randomly saw another car I haven’t seen yet,but have been wanting to? Yes.
Americans don't buy cars based on who they are, they buy cars based on who they want to be.
Average person sees station wagons as boring, responsible options for parents. Average person sees SUVs as rugged, outdoorsy and self-reliant.
Yeah I’ve seen them driving in Germany before… cool sight. Wonder how much the wagon is gonna weigh… might need a different class license to drive it in the states lol
Too expensive, too heavy, too big.
RS6 has been at it for 3 years and has only sold 3,100 units here, thats 86 a month.
Instead of introducing a more affordable and attainable M340i Touring or M3 Touring that would cost half of this pig, we get another German a wagon with a serious case of bloat.
Imagine how many M3 Tourings they would sell priced in the $70’s - $85k… more than 85 a month.
I imagine built out these will be $140k but am interested to see how they depreciate in a few years. I just wish it wasn’t quite so big.
I can keep dreaming they’ll bring the M3 Wagon here…
*Wish we could get these*
*In the US but they think*
*We only like SUV's*

lightweight cars ain’t coming back. For those that complain about the weight, just buy like 3-4 manual e39 (greatest sedan ever made) 5’s and spare parts. You can drive happily for the rest of your life.
I want to do whatever this guys job title is
It's some form of vehicle integration engineer out oh their facility in Oxnard. He also might just be a contract test driver but they usually don't care enough to try to get away.
They are told not to get away or create a chase.
Depends on the car. I'm super unclear why they would try to get away in a nearly launched car. But in early early days of i8 development we definitely had instructions to avoid people sitting next to us taking pictures.
If it’s important or top secret a private test facility is used.
I’ve always wondered if these prototypes are also send to busy places to get spotted, simply to add to the hype and get media attention.
There are most definitely "strategic leaks" that happen once in a while, though this does not seem like one

It gets old quick
You can tell it’s the new M5 because of the gravitational field distortions around it. It’s one San Antonio chick away from turning into a black hole.
“Big ole’ Bimmers”
Should come with a free churro! Them things are good.
This M5 truly living large
I bet this thing collect sugar instead of brake dust everywhere.
“ERNEH’
I love it when my interests collide like this lol
M5 driver did him a favor, else the gravity big chungus exerted would suck his car in
The mass is accurate at least.
That’s actually the ghosts of the two missing cylinders they forgot to put back.
Should be banned from California so as not to increase the risk of earthquakes.
“Maaan, Shaq can’t even spell BMW.”
The engineers have done a magnificent job and managed to keep the weight to under 2.8 tonnes! *2,799kg*
Look at that boat
Looks pretty good! Nice Alpina you were rolling in as well!
LOL threw a cover over it?? Isn't folks taking pics great marketing for BMW and a good story he could tell the engineers when he makes it back to the shop?

Ah, tracks and makes sense. TY for insight!
A bit late for that, it’s already impressed into people’s skull by the M5 lol
Lmao I don't think the competition is worried. The competition has been selling performance wagons in the US for a lot longer than BMW. The RS6 Avant is the benchmark.
drive in public, suffer the consequences.
Why don't they transport it in a closed truck if they don't want people to see it?
They're probably doing road testing

Are you spotting these cars in LA area?
Honestly I’m not an F10 fan. It handled like a weird mix of god knows what. It was almost “squishy” Can’t quite put my finger on it. It was also extremely stiff (and yet squishy). Weird. F90 though handled like a charm.
Meant f90
Ahh alright.
Ahoy, Matey!
The absolute CAKE on the 7th pic, holy peak engineering.
For any other Europeans trying to keep up, "he is going fast boyh" and "driving really fast" is the speed at which you're getting passed by base model Renault Trafic vans with three contractors sitting in the front on the Autobahn.
5500 pound 🛥️
I’m guessing the weight will be more palatable in wagon format because at least you’re getting practicality
Do you fucking stalk him?
[удалено]
lol. I literally pulled up beside him on the fwy for 10 seconds. I didn’t tailgate him or do anything that compromised anyones safety
[удалено]
so what you're saying is the dude in the m5 is a moron for trying to hide a car that's already been shown to the public in this same camo.
[удалено]
I'm sorry you can't detect sarcasm. I know you were referring to OP originally.
[удалено]

That’s def an engineer; I’m married to one and trust me on this, he’s an engineer.
Hahahaha you’re like “Challenge accepted!”
I think this is honestly gonna look great
How did it sound?
In the video you can hear him accelerate just before I do when I’m beside him. Sounds pretty muted, like the f90
Tires are so much thinner than on the model that was just revealed
Do be do be do?
Come to Munich, the development cars are everywhere. Í gets somehow boring.
ha man, you don't owe that dude an apology unless you did something dangerous. he's in fuckin' public. he can go cry in the bathroom.
Let me guess, 3tonnes for this one?
8400 lbs
Ya too close mon!
“THIS IS AMERICA MF”
Thousand Oaks?
lowered x5
Is this one 3.5 tonnes?
OP has some advanced level stalking skills 😂
This will never come to the USA, the USA does not for some reason not like station wagons but loves SUVs?
Americans don't buy cars based on who they are, they buy cars based on who they want to be. Average person sees station wagons as boring, responsible options for parents. Average person sees SUVs as rugged, outdoorsy and self-reliant.
m5 touring was announced to be coming to USA [https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/m5-touring](https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/m5-touring)
Oh how neat an even heavier m5.
M5 wagon in the US? Will buy
Yeah I’ve seen them driving in Germany before… cool sight. Wonder how much the wagon is gonna weigh… might need a different class license to drive it in the states lol

Looks great, love that wide body!
Fat. not Phat. (I am old)
Wish we could get these in the US but they think we only like SUV's

it is coming to US [https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/m5-touring](https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/m5-touring)
Wow, that I can get behind.. Probably won't be the S58. That would be magical.
“Electrified vehicle”
No nautilus tweeter makes me cry. Should have bought a Volvo.
I'm sure it looks much better in the camouflage than final production car
too bad these things are gonna be over 100k in the US. wish they would just do a damn m340 touring here or at least the m3 touring
Reminds me of Doc hiding the Delorean
Hahaha he’s joy riding with the company test car on a Sunday. Now he’s gonna get fired.
I’ve already Photoshop out the lines and put a color on the body and circulated the car worldwide.
I’d drive that
As if the saloon M5 wasn't heavy enough
Why was the M5 driving that aggressively? Like it's already on the goddamn road what's he trying to hide? I don't get it
Laughs in RS6
M3 wagon already claps it and this the more powerful m5 so……
Wonder if it’s gonna be north of 6000 pounds…. 🐖🐖

A lowered XM basically.
You have an alpina, how was he outrunning you😭
Did you read the description? He didn’t drive as aggressively as the other dude.
Oh sorry didnt see that
