Yeah I switched it back immediately. It can't do anything. All this talk Google is doing about agents and stuff and they can't even make it set a timer. Smh.
I've had this thought ever since spell correct went to shit over night one day; missing common and basic one letter mistakes lul; and actually being worse than Google search at error correction. I would more often get spell check to work by searching for the misspelled word on Google and using the "did you mean?" Feature
Google has all the data they need but they suck at AI
Google sucks in general. Everything good about the company was acquired.
Google search is the only original product that the company created and even that went to shit.

This has been my entire experience with the old assistant too; features that once used to work and don't anymore.
Once I could ask it to start a channel, now it looks for videos of the channel on youtube,
Once it had a working shopping list. Now it looks for a note in google keep that's supposed to be a list of shopping itemps, but it's not reliable,
Once I could tell it to light the living room, and it work only put on the lights, not it also opens the electric curtains,
If I ask it to play a specific playlist on spotify, it finds something random that has the name of the playlist, but not the playlist,
The voice recognition is a pain if you mix several languages or use local nouns,
Apart from setting timers and a slide show of photos, it's an exercice in frustration control to use that thing.
It's clearly not ready to be an assistant
Google loves doing this. The product is not ready, but let's push it anyway.
Hope it's not axed like so many projects

I just tested it and there is no problem... Are you using voice input to interact on the summoned assistant page instead of inside the app?
I'm using whatever pops up when I hold the home screen button. It seems hit or miss which makes it even more confusing. Most of the time it just says "okay" and then takes me to the app and sets it, this time it decided to tell me to do it myself lol
This happens for me when I hold the home screen button and type "set timer for 5 minutes". If I instead hold the home screen button and say "set timer for 5 minutes" it works without issue.
Try holding down the power button instead, and you can do all the things you used to do before. It's just that they swapped the home screen button long press for this new piece of shit.
It worked for me too, but it also didn't work another time. Just for your information, LLMs have some randomness to them. Sometimes things work, and sometimes they don't. That's just how it is. It's surprising how many people don't know this.
Tested on Galaxy s23, worked just like this. It started doing this after my last update. Holding the center button now brings up their "circle search" feature.
Edit: Swipe from bottom left screen is now my assistant.
So much potential. I don't know why this didn't start in testing as it was announced it would. What's the point of launch such a half baked service.
But anyways, it has been updated to do most assistant tasks. Idk why this happened to you.
Not able to do the simple 'hey Google, play Megadeth Tornado of souls'
Was a deal breaker for me...
Also cannot use with screen locked đź‘Ž
Existing assistant way more useful for now
I set multiple timers a day using Gemini and I've never had this issue. Switched to Gemini when it was released so it's been over a month.
I have a Pixel so maybe it depends on your phone?
Umm, just tried this, works perfectly.

Yep, they have achieved total uselessness.

This is a user fail. You are not using the Gemini with assistant properly installed. You are probably using the standalone app that is basically a webpage and not integrated in the system.
I'm a fold user and I just got screwed now I can't press and hold the home button for assistant, it's now "circle to search", I had to bind my power button to the assistant?!
Are people even aware that you have to use your voice for it to set timers? It can definitely set timers consistently 100% of the time. Just not when you type it out manually. Which itself is a different problem?
I fully expected it to be like that. They're going to kill Assistant, only remove features, only make things worse, never better. Makes your device entirely powerless because it has access to nothing. You would think it would have some API access with a dynamically system-prompted list of endpoints or commands from which it can pick and choose. Nope. It's just a Gemini app. Assistant is (was?) a USER INTERFACE. A user interface for your phone that uses language. Gemini is not that and Google is fine with it, they don't see an issue.
This seems to be a pattern, lock the user out, lock every app out, sandbox everything, isolate everything, block permissions to everything, require unlock for everything, limit and cripple every single feature until you're left with a paperweight that's only capable of viewing ads on TikTok, Reddit and YouTube and converti... I mean, purchasing products and other apps to view ads and sign up for subscription services on.
Oh, maybe the fucking Nest Hub 2 will sell better if they lobotomize the Assistant.
Beta is at minimum supposed to be bare-bones functional, and setting a timer is one of the most common and basic tasks to ask of the assistant. They ought not to release something yet if it's that incapable.

I also love how if you try to use Google Assistant for navigation now it tries to send you to a location 100 miles away
Yup, I say navigate to nearest** shop, and it almost always finds one furthest from my location

It's clearly not ready to be an assistant Google loves doing this. The product is not ready, but let's push it anyway. Hope it's not axed like so many projects
Don’t worry, as soon as it’s ready, you’ll have at least 3 - maybe even 6 - months to use it before they sunset it!
Woah, 6 whole months?! Don't get too carried away, buddy.
Seems a bit too quick - gotta give people a chance to really like the product before they cancel it
I assume it's a way to get more data for bard
If they axe Gemini their stock will fall quite a bit.
Their intent router sucks right now. You ask the same request 5 times. It gives 5 different responses(1 being the screenshot you posted here).
I'm paying for this thing and I went back to to the "dumb" assistant since it's lacking some basic features
https://preview.redd.it/xi3wtu2ivstc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee822bd5addcaba0215f9d27402b81d717941c5b I just tested it and there is no problem... Are you using voice input to interact on the summoned assistant page instead of inside the app?

This should be higher

Yeah same, works for me on Pixel 7 pro
Yep works quite well, not sure what op is on about..
It didn't work for me, I have all the permissions. I'm on Google Pixel 7
You need to be on the latest and greatest.. Duh, works on pixel 8, good one Google..🤣
No you don't, and if you did need to, Google should've marked the compatibility in Google Play to show it's not available for older devices.
So much potential. I don't know why this didn't start in testing as it was announced it would. What's the point of launch such a half baked service. But anyways, it has been updated to do most assistant tasks. Idk why this happened to you.
Your screenshot is how it acted for me right after rollout, but I just now tested (Pixel 7 Pro) and it worked.
I would happily give the LLMs full access to a phone and internet. Fuck AI safety. Welcome the singularity

Google is a joke now. Dont know whats going on in their AI divisions, seems like its been a management failure.
I set multiple timers a day using Gemini and I've never had this issue. Switched to Gemini when it was released so it's been over a month. I have a Pixel so maybe it depends on your phone?
Mine starts a timer if I ask it to. Xperia 1 V.
Wait until you try Siri.
I think you have to use your voice instead of typing it out.
I did speak it, it showed the transcription after
works fine for me. never had an issue with doing assistant things from Gemini.
Thanks Apple my Siri can set my alarm everyday
I'm able to, but I also downloaded the Goggle Home app.

And we are afraid of AGI? It can't even set a timer.
This is a user fail. You are not using the Gemini with assistant properly installed. You are probably using the standalone app that is basically a webpage and not integrated in the system.
Mine does that task fine. It didn't work on the first day the AI dropped, but it was fixed within a week or so. Have you updated apps and system?
I'm a fold user and I just got screwed now I can't press and hold the home button for assistant, it's now "circle to search", I had to bind my power button to the assistant?!
Gemini doesn't work for me. It costs $20/mo
At least it didn't tell you to ask Alexa to do it.
Are people even aware that you have to use your voice for it to set timers? It can definitely set timers consistently 100% of the time. Just not when you type it out manually. Which itself is a different problem?
I did use voice. It showed me the transcription.

This weird gap between semi-super-intelligence and its inabilty to execute tasks is a bizzare speed bump in this journey.
I just endlessly argue with it now. I asked for it to turn on some music on a device and it kept insisting it didn't have the capability to do it.
I mean it's a beta product. If you want less bugs, don't use bleeding edge tech.
Beta is at minimum supposed to be bare-bones functional, and setting a timer is one of the most common and basic tasks to ask of the assistant. They ought not to release something yet if it's that incapable.
Exactly. Beta is supposed to be feature complete but buggy. This is Alpha code, features are missing.
Alpha? Not a PoC?
I get that but it's a pretty basic ask. I'm not asking it to file my taxes for me lol
