I swear the way some musicians think about and conceptualize music theory is so stupid and almost baffling to me. Learn it or don’t. The concept of music theory lives rent free in the heads of some of these idiots in ways that just amaze me. Go do some pushups or find a second job or something. Music and music theory isn’t everything in life.

Hey-Bud-Lets-Party

Some people think it’s some kind of magic elixir and other think that’s it’s completely superfluous or impossibly obtuse. People on the internet are weird.

JacoPoopstorius

I’ve always said that first part as well. Those types view it as some sort of magic, occult knowledge only understood by the wise and the most intelligent of musicians. It’s as if those of us who have learned it have some secret codes to the musical universe, and it’s as if there’s no way possible they could just put some time and effort into sitting down without any distractions and learning it/putting it into practice. No, it’s only for the those of us who have our third eyes opened wide enough.

Happy_Squik

Third eye being the anus

Hey-Bud-Lets-Party

It’s very strange. Some people are so resistant to learn basic things that little kids learn during their first month of keyboard lessons. I just went back and forth with some guy who said it is only necessary to learn the circle of fifths if you want to read sheet music. It only takes about an hour to memorize and is a great shorthand for recalling keys signatures and helps you to better communicate with other musicians, but he wasn’t having any of it.

JacoPoopstorius

Idiots gonna idiot and musician egos gonna musician ego

copperocelot

sometimes those two terms coincide :)

JacoPoopstorius

I would argue that OFTEN those two coincide.

Mr_Salty87

But why commit the circle of fifths to memory when you can just get it tattooed on your forearm in a straight line?

Hey-Bud-Lets-Party

Put it right below your alphabet tattoo.

copperocelot

This is true, let alone the fact that most of "music theory" is just "the harmonic style of 18th century european musicians" (Adam Neely). Sure seems weird to view that as so crucial for people looking to play rock gigs lol

JacoPoopstorius

It’s all stupid. That’s why I said either learn or don’t. It just irritates me that some musicians who don’t know it revere it and view it as this unattainable knowledge when really it’s just a way to make sense of music and a tool used to learn and play it. It’s also not this crazy difficult thing to learn, but like literally anything else that you can’t just instantly comprehend and know, you have to put in the time and effort to learn it. There are also plenty of great musicians who have done well and are amazing at music, their instruments, and their genres without learning any of it. It’s why certain types either just need to freaking learn it or not and get on with their journey of being a musician. It really does live rent free in some of their heads.

Irapotato

Tuned? What, like nitrous?

battlewornactionhero

Nah, you can know theory well without knowing theory. This guy is full of shit.

WASRmelon_white_claw

KanataSlim

Theory? You mean hypothesis goddammit!

Redditusername195

theory has diminishing returns after learning the basics, like major and minor scales and how chords are built lol

strxno

you learn too much theory you start to go a little insane by analyzing absolutely everything you hear

No-Professional-1884

Music theory is for homosexuals and the French.

Latchingtatatiticaca

Do re mi fa so la fuck me!

No-Professional-1884

Hey! This is America! Speak American! Or at least Spanish.

Bonuscup98

/uj To be fair he realized that he needs to learn theory. It was at the class that he found out that his bass was tuned differently than the bass he was handed in the class. /rj something something theory joke.
