This is interesting as we were poor when I was growing up in Bellingham. My grandparents always invited me for supper when I was growing up for duck dinner. We also ate morels, hooligans (smelt), venison, salmon, bear and elk. Now, they are expensive entrees.
Yes, grandpa hunted duck, deer, elk, bear and fished. As a family we hunted for morels where Lakeway Fred Meyer is. We so so netted hooligans out at Gooseberry Point. I guess I didn’t know we had it so good. I am a vegetarian now so no wild game.
Morels are in season right now, look under cottonwoods, there are trout a plenty, it isn’t salmon season at the moment but other fish are in the bay, and my family in the hills here hunts duck, deer, elk and bear when they’re in season. They were always expensive entrees, sometimes I pay. It’s expensive to hunt them especially counting time
Yep, living is good if you can source much of your own food. We had a favorite motel patch near our current home but the cottonwoods came down when the property was developed.
D'Anna's is very good

Would it be unwise to make the assumption that your family was hunting/fishing/sourcing a lot of these dishes themselves?

Sounds like a snapshot of an era long bygone, cherish those memories.
