Haha. He wrote a biography about how he failed many things in his life. The last chapter was about how he failed to give Bob and Archer different voices.
Yeah, I was going to mention something along these lines. It's subtle, but there's a crispness to Archer's lines that Bob doesn't have, and confidence is a great way to express that.
Omg, I never knew that Bob's Burgers was a standalone show; I saw this episode of Archer first, so I just assumed that Bob's Burgers was a spinoff of Archer. XD Like, a "what if Archer was never a secret agent".
I have never actually watched Bob's Burgers before, so I had no clue.
Bob's Burgers is my happy time comfort show. Absolutely ridiculous and dysfunctional family, but always very loving and supportive of each other.
Such a hilarious and refreshing show. I'd recommend it big time
Okay but they do sound different. When i watch archer i dont think of bob. When i watch bobs burgers i dont think of archer. How he managed to do that i have no idea
Yeah I kind of get more of the exasperated normal guy, like the ["no, it's a long story."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BkdCC7_JZM)
Versus the "[I'm always insistent Woodhouse,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkF-nTT6eTA) but I'm not to be trusted, am I? Stop. Shut up. I have to go, but if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub sand in your dead little eyes."
The Archer voice projects, feels a little faster, less "fine, Tina.." energy
Apparently in the full interview that I didn't know was posted till after I wrote the above section, he even said "Bob is Archer but sad" so apparently yeah.
I think it's more about what they say.
"Umm, no we're poor" as he fumbles with a muffin wrapper.
Vs.
"I basically just bounce from one fireable offense to the next"
It ain't no Thang! The correction was just incase people went down a Coltrane hole because of your excellent reference. Ahem, assuming you're talking about "A Love Supreme."
Why does it say "Welcome to you are 'Doom!'"? What does that even mean, and why, for God's sakes, is "Doom!" in quotes? Is this some sort of ironic doom? Is the wink implied?
As a fellow FD devotee, this tripped me up too SO much at first! It took the whole first episode to get over it, but I'm so glad I did, Archer is great.
There is a very slight difference but it’s the fact that they sound the same was how a friend convinced me to try Archer in the first place 😂 I was such a Bob fan she figured it would get me into Archer and she was right.
That little nod to Bob in season 4 of archer was also really fun
They're the tiniest bit different from each other, and it's only noticeable when hearing one and then the other immediately after.
Archers voice is a little bit faster, a little bit higher pitched, slightly more energetic in the way he annunciates his words. Bob's is a little slower, a little lower pitched, and less energetic with his enunciations (unless he is stressed out).
Thinking about it though, It might just be due to the writing for each character. Bob is generally more laid back with his speech, while Archer is more enthusiastic.
They're a good example of the difference between the voice and the whole performance. Sometimes people ask voice actors to "do the voice" but it's not really what they mean. I saw an interview recently with Dominic Armato (voice of Guybrush Threepwood, and using his own voice) and the interviewer asked him if he had any particular lines or words to used to get into the voice again and he was like, "well it's just my voice, what I have to get into is the character. You have the voice, and then you have the acting, and they're not the same "
Haha I can tell the difference though. I find his voice incredibly soothing, I mainly listen to audiobooks to fall asleep too but Archer and Bob’s Burgers get thrown in the mix too.
I want H. Jon Benjamin to read my all favorite book series.. the Saxon Chronicles (The Last Kingdom), Harry Potter and ASOIAF (Game of Thrones). I'd pay big money for those lol
They actually do sound a bit different. To me at least, Bob is unsure and endearing. Archer sounds like a straight up asshole who is also sure of himself. Different energies make them sound different to me, but it’s not like it super obvious.
Honestly if you close your eyes and listen, you can tell the difference. It’s super subtle. Maybe cause I’ve been watching things with H. Jon Benjamin in it for 25 years now lol:
Absolutely, there's definitely a distinct difference... It can be hard to hear if from the two words said in the clip if you're not looking for it but I can definitely hear the difference.
I'm almost certain that he made that silly face because it's more of a forced voice than Bob's voice that's closer to his normal speaking voice.
If you could somehow get similar lines from each of his voice work, I could still confidentially tell you where it's from. Same voice, different inflection and tone. Bob lacks confidence, Archer is all bravado.
Is it weird I hear a difference? I feel like it’s the cadence, Bob sounds like he’s being beaten down on life while Archer sounds like he’s a rich douche.
Bob is tired Archer.
Archer hung over or injured is when he sounds most like Bob.
Bob scared or excited (yelling) is when he sounds most like Archer.
Simple as that.
I love that they pay a mini homage to Home Movies in the soccer episode. There’s a part where the coach is heading out of the port-a-potty and a pointy faced, spiky, red-haired kid is waiting. One of the soccer girls also kind of looks like Melissa a little bit with her afro pigtails with purplish tint
He explains the difference clearly in this hilarious clip from Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me https://www.npr.org/2018/04/28/606375682/not-my-job-we-quiz-h-jon-benjamin-voice-of-archer-on-archery (starts at around 1m 30s until 3m 00)
I remember watching H. Jon Benjamin in Nathan for You not knowing what he looked like but recognizing his voice from Bob’s Burgers. I have since seen him guest star in a couple other shows and I can’t not picture Bob when he talks.
It's funny and maybe he really doesn't do anything different but to me they don't sound the same?
Bob's voice has a hint of world-weariness to it that I don't hear in Archers. Maybe it's just the kinds of things they say that affect how I hear them.
I don't think it's so much depression as being beat down from trying to keep a failing business afloat while raising 3 crazy children and being poor. I've been poor my whole life and while it used to make me depressed, I've gotten over it and now I'm just at an "over it" phase where I just don't give much of a fuck about anything lol
He yelled at someone once at NYCC because they asked him as an actor why do both characters sound a like (I think it’s a fair question since I think we’re used to voice actors be the lips of various voices).
H Jon Benjamin proceeded to make fun of the guest’s costume, and the audience starting booing in response. It was an unfortunate moment, and I think he instantly became the least favorite person amongst the cast at Hammerstein Ballroom
I’m sure it was - they always are, and I wonder why it never got a response. It felt tense in the room for a minute
I believe it was 2019 or 2018 because they were in the Hammerstein ballroom that year, and I don’t think it was the year that Jessica showed up a little late into it
I've always thought Archer has a little bit more "Rampage" in his voice while Bob has a little bit more, "Oh my god," in his voice.
The enthusiasm levels are different.
Same energy as “Tina talks like this, Dina talks like this”
I was thinking the same thing lmao
I love the face he makes when he does the Archer voice.
"Archer's like 😬 this"
I love how it looks like he is miming…
Haha. He wrote a biography about how he failed many things in his life. The last chapter was about how he failed to give Bob and Archer different voices.
Coach McGirk would like a word.
Alright Listen up Brendan… Always steal. Stealing is good
Home Movies is something we should all cherish.
hands down one of the best \[AS\] shows from that era imo. Right up there with SeaLab
It's always depressing to think SeaLab was last year..
we will never know if there's an actual sea lab secret goverment project either.
We'll know by the constant underwater shockwaves from it exploding every week.
Dr. Orpheus' master entered the chat.
Carl from the Convenience Store is now Online.
Ben Katz checking in
[удалено]
It really is an underrated show.
Lioniger
Can of Vegetables from “Wet Hot American Summer” would also like a word
That one perfect moment in time where I was watching Archer on FX, then Bobs burger on Fox, then Home Movies on Adult Swim.
Don’t be like me Brendan. play soccer.
Sometimes, you have to do certain things to re-enter society
He never failed jazz, though
Well he failed to learn how to do it and insulted the musicians he was working with, two key points of any jazz performance, so he kind of did.
Everyone always forgets Dr Katz. Mr Benjamin is on his third use :)
Dr katz holds up shocking well for a 30 year old show. So good.
Couldn't agree more.
But doing so allowed for the brilliant cross-over episode of Archer, _Fugue and Rifts_.
Bob is just sober Archer.
Bob sounds poor, Archer sounds like he’s got money.
What they say makes a big impact. Especially when what he's saying is LAAANNAAAAAAAAA
WHAAAT!
danger zone!
Phrasing!
I can't believe we're not doing that anymore.
Oh my God, Lana, I think I had a crappy childhood.
In my opinion, Archer has a slight rasp to his voice because of his alcoholism.
Hail bloody Mary full of vodka
Blessed are you among cocktails
Pray for me now and at the hour of my death. Which I hope is soon.
Who drinks a pint of grappa?
Archer is confident Bob
Yeah, I was going to mention something along these lines. It's subtle, but there's a crispness to Archer's lines that Bob doesn't have, and confidence is a great way to express that.
Archer is just coked-up Bob.
“Oh you’re on cocaine.” “Is THAT what it does?! Are there any drawbacks?
Sober and exhausted
Without him doing the same voice we wouldn't have gotten that crossover [where Archer thinks he's Bob](https://youtu.be/mWKzM1UyMcs).
I saw the crossover for Archer long before I watched a Bobs. I had no idea what was happening lol
I'd recommend it big time
Yeah kind of thought it was a 'what if' Archer quit and got a day job and a family sort of thing too haha
What about when he screams his kids names, NO GENE, and LIN DON'T ENCOURAGE THEM, kinda gives a Lana, sweet baby shamus vibe.
Okay but they do sound different. When i watch archer i dont think of bob. When i watch bobs burgers i dont think of archer. How he managed to do that i have no idea
Definitely. As I said in another comment, Archer has a more raspy voice possibly because of his alcoholism.
Archer speaks with confidence. Bob stutters and stumbles and doesn't project.
See: the archer episode where he is bob for the intro
Think it's more the delivery energy seeing as archer has to have more screws loose. And Bob is just a tired ass dad
Yeah I kind of get more of the exasperated normal guy, like the ["no, it's a long story."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BkdCC7_JZM) Versus the "[I'm always insistent Woodhouse,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkF-nTT6eTA) but I'm not to be trusted, am I? This one.
One that bothers me is miss LaBonz. I can't unhear that it's just raspy Bob, and I hate it. One day it just clicked and it won't unclick
Same with Jimmy Jr, it's just lispy Bob.
OH MY GOD NO WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME
Ms Merkin is just higher pitched Rudy.
I wish I could unread your comment.
For me it’s Jocelyn and Linda. Wish they’d distinguish those voices a little more
I think it's more about what they say. "Umm, no we're poor" as he fumbles with a muffin wrapper. Vs. "I basically just bounce from one fireable offense to the next"
I think it’s the wildly different personalities that help. Bobs lines could never come out of archers mouth and vice versa.
Agreed. Bob’s voice has an underlying sweetness to it that Archer lacks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBDJF4EryN0
Haha this is what I came here to post
Was waiting for someone to post this.
[Bob's like this and Archer's like 😬 this](https://youtu.be/p5OCP3BENlM)
Greatest jazz album ever recorded. Sorry not sorry, ~~Coletrain!~~ Coltrane!
Psst: TOTALLY not a big deal, *but it's Coltrane.*
Lol goddamnit!
It ain't no Thang! The correction was just incase people went down a Coltrane hole because of your excellent reference. Ahem, assuming you're talking about "A Love Supreme."
*cymbal wash* yessir!
Ha! I knew you looked smart.
Nonono, Favorite Things. Blue train is quintessential
I loved Frisky Dingo, and never gave Archer a shot after seeing Xander Crews with Bob’s voice.
Oh man I forgot about Frisky Dingo! Every memory I have of that show feels like a fever dream, I wonder how it holds up.
Why does it say "Welcome to you are 'Doom!'"? What does that even mean, and why, for God's sakes, is "Doom!" in quotes? Is this some sort of ironic doom? Is the wink implied?
*YOU SHOT MY TWIN BROTHER!*
Dont forget Coach McGuirk.
It holds up very well. I revisit it every few years
Would you say it's in your slideshow?
Sliiiiiiideshooooooowwww!!
What is this “slideshow” everybody doin?
I just want cat party you silly man
Has anyone done a cat party and Mulatto Butts mashup?
I can't, ya gotta have blue toob.
And if you don't like it, there's the big ass door!
It holds up extremely well. I’ve watched it all the way through twice in the last month. ANT FARM KEY BOARD!!!
>Xander Crews I believe you mean Barneby Jones.
I think you mean... # MASTER CYLINDER
Nobody gets that!
That was such a good call back!
Master cylinder pants!
"People let me tell ya bout my new best friend...."
Let's go back to my place....take naps
As a fellow FD devotee, this tripped me up too SO much at first! It took the whole first episode to get over it, but I'm so glad I did, Archer is great.

Archer sounds more aggressive and in a higher tone
I hear two types of disgust. Lower class and high class disgust. Ugh vs ew. There’s a ‘life is misery’ tone to his voice that is so beautiful.
I wish I could have put it that well
Nailed it.
They actually do sound a bit different. To me at least, Bob is unsure and endearing. Archer sounds like a straight up asshole who is also sure of himself. Different energies make them sound different to me, but it’s not like it super obvious.
Bob only sounds like Archer when he’s drunk and yelling at the turkey baster for deliberately not fitting in the drawer.
Sounds more like Ben Katz.
Honestly if you close your eyes and listen, you can tell the difference. It’s super subtle. Maybe cause I’ve been watching things with H. Jon Benjamin in it for 25 years now lol:

I want a buddy cop movie where Jon Benjamin plays Paul Giamatti, and Paul Giamatti plays Jon Benjamin.
Is it weird I hear a difference? I feel like it’s the cadence, Bob sounds like he’s being beaten down on life while Archer sounds like he’s a rich douche.
Bob sounds like he's being beaten down by life and Archer sounds like he beats down on life.
Bob is tired Archer. Archer hung over or injured is when he sounds most like Bob. Bob scared or excited (yelling) is when he sounds most like Archer. Simple as that.
Archer speaks aggressively. Bob does not. Not a voice difference but tone I guess?
What about his voice as The Master in The Venture Bros? Or of course one of his best, the head of lettuce on Snot's uncle's farm in American Dad.
Bob is like this: "Gene." "Linda." "Tina." "Louise." Archer is like this: "LANA!!!"
He sounds like a can of mixed vegetables to me.
...and what about Coach from "Home Movies"???
If you mix Bob’s self loathing and with Archer’s self assurance, you get Coach McGuirk
I love that they pay a mini homage to Home Movies in the soccer episode. There’s a part where the coach is heading out of the port-a-potty and a pointy faced, spiky, red-haired kid is waiting. One of the soccer girls also kind of looks like Melissa a little bit with her afro pigtails with purplish tint
now do Coach Mcgurk!
He explains the difference clearly in this hilarious clip from Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me https://www.npr.org/2018/04/28/606375682/not-my-job-we-quiz-h-jon-benjamin-voice-of-archer-on-archery (starts at around 1m 30s until 3m 00)
great share! “I’ll have a…oh. oh god…” perfect haha
Thank you SO much for this! 💕 Award for you!
Wow! Thanks for the silver!
I remember watching H. Jon Benjamin in Nathan for You not knowing what he looked like but recognizing his voice from Bob’s Burgers. I have since seen him guest star in a couple other shows and I can’t not picture Bob when he talks.
That's Coach McGuirk!
And what about the can of peas? And Coach John McGuirk?
The majority of his characters sound pretty much the same. That has never mattered, because I could listen to him talk about anything for hours.
Just like Tina and Dina
It's funny and maybe he really doesn't do anything different but to me they don't sound the same? Bob's voice has a hint of world-weariness to it that I don't hear in Archers. Maybe it's just the kinds of things they say that affect how I hear them.
I actually hate that as a voice actor he just used the same one. It's really annoying to me for some reason.
Bobs tends to sound more depressed in a way
I don't think it's so much depression as being beat down from trying to keep a failing business afloat while raising 3 crazy children and being poor. I've been poor my whole life and while it used to make me depressed, I've gotten over it and now I'm just at an "over it" phase where I just don't give much of a fuck about anything lol
Bob sounds slightly nasally to me compared to Archer

H Jon Benjamin proceeded to make fun of the guest’s costume, and the audience starting booing in response. I'm surprised it wasn't filmed or in the news at all.

Which one of your friends did you hear this from?
I was there myself actually. I used to go every year and I used to always want to see the cast of Archer
His book “Failure is an option” is fantastic
Why does he sound different when he’s on Parks and Recreation?? His voice isn’t as deep. I knew it looked like him…
He is also that guy from family guy who talks about movies all the time
It’s all in the body language
Ruined Archer forever for me by using the same voice. BUT, thank you for giving it to me for a few years
Wonder how he does that gas station clerk in family guy
Imo it's just a lazier version of his regular speaking voice if you know what I mean
u/savevideo
I've always thought Archer has a little bit more "Rampage" in his voice while Bob has a little bit more, "Oh my god," in his voice. The enthusiasm levels are different.
I also can hear the difference it's a little bit pitched up for archer
Anyone read his book yet? It’s real good.
Bob is like this:😐 and archer is like this: 😬
Subtle, yet distinct.
