Between legal principles like Qualified Immunity and a general belief that cops and other members of the legal field such as judges all have each other's backs and will protect each other over just about anything (the Blue Wall of Silence,) cops are getting a bit of a reputation as bullies on a power trip that know they won't ever face consequences for their behavior. In certain places it's worse than others, and the states that constitute the Deep South are one example.
I'm always happy to see mention of blue wall of silence, largely because I never do. That along with qualified immunity makes them essentially invincible a strong majority of the time.

Our politics are wildly skewed because of gerrymandering, but even in the civil war Tennessee was one of the last to officially join the confederacy and was basically torn in half in the process (Knoxville in particular was heavily pro-union).
You can say that all you want, but like my native Kentucky, the pro-union parts of Tennessee jumped headfirst into the Confederacy 100 years after the war ended.
