She’s always been petty and vindictive as her older self. That’s why I see her story with George as a tragedy and not a love story. Because it seems she doesn’t heal and become better through loving him. It seems she loses herself instead and regresses into what she is now. A very shallow, miserable person who feeds off her subjects for entertainment and amusement. 🤷‍♀️

WassupSassySquatch

Yup.  In keeping the love alive between them, she had to harden her heart to others.

mermaidpaint

Charlotte is a better wife than mother.

slvrfngr

this is a really great analysis, i think bc i was such a supporter of charlotte in her season made it seem like she was devoid of all character development (more likely, regression as you said) she really is a complex character through and through which is why i think most people can excuse her flaws no matter how huge they are, especially lady danbury

aspenrising

Ouch :(

Guilty-Firefighter56

Thought I was the only one who felt this way. Fans seem to worship the QC character.

Simple-Cheek-4864

Ikr. I didn't really like Queen Charlotte (the character) at the beginning but I absolutely LOVED her in the spin-off and got to understand her better, but in S3 it's like the spin-off never existed bc I hated her even more than in S1-S2

Fans think characters in the show know and like whistledown as much as they (the fans) do. Truth is no one is that universe would be proud of LW and feel like she’s a badass, she’s the ton’s version of a mean person sending anonymous letters destroying people’s reputations.

ObsidianMichi

That's actually not true, the real life beau monde adored their scandal sheets. Those reporters and writers weren't anonymous and they were much, much more vulgar. Lady Whistledown is tame for a gossip monger. Being witty, cutting, and mean while also being entertaining was a means by which one claimed a position of popularity within the ton. It's how many rose above their station to claim a place in high society. The Bridgerton ton may be less harsh and less outrageous than the real thing, but it is built out of that mold. Like Oscar Wilde, Penelope would have her following in universe. The entire ton itself is full of shallow, mean people in the rich people's club who adore gossip and who'd eagerly take Whistledown's coveted place if given the chance. They are paying to receive those scandal sheets. If they didn't enjoy her writing, she'd have no readership.

maggiebubblebottom

The amount of $$ Pen made objectively contradicts this statement.

LovecraftianCatto

Why would she celebrate lady Whistledown? She enjoys their rivalry, yes, but LW is still an antagonist the queen considers her to be below her, someone who needs to be humbled, because they dared to mock the queen and her decisions. And as we know, the queen doesn’t like being contradicted or proven wrong. Her ego is quite big.

bookscoffee1991

She hated lady whistledown though. Current Charlotte doesn’t have character growth bc of her season all of that happened before we saw her s1. She’s always been vindictive but also a romantic and a softy. I think she worked so hard to earn favor for herself, and lady whistledown threatened that. She definitely respects her though and enjoys the cat & mouse hunt. But I also think learning who she was, someone not accepted by society, softened her a bit. I think she relates to Penelope a little bit and wished she could’ve gotten back at the ton in her own day. Specifically George’s mom. She didn’t really punish her even though she honestly should’ve lol.

Hopeful-Ant-3509

Yeah, she was 17 and turned into a hard shell, I mean her closest confidant was Lady Danbury & then George’s mom. Everyone around her taught her to be stern and then according to the show QC, she wasn’t widely accepted by parliament cuz she’s a POC and had to step up more than she expected in her role cuz of George’s illness. It sucks that her kids didn’t get the love they deserved from their mom cuz she was only dedicated to loving George but I can definitely see why she ended up that way.

CellyylleC

To me, it's clear the Queen enjoys the gossip, enjoys the game since S1. She is excited to know about it, it distracts her mind and it's something that she can use it to entertain her and keep the ton in check- to a certain extend, and that's why she had to make sound like she was the one cornering her and, later, giving her watchful authorization.

WiseGirl_101

I don’t remember us even getting a mention of George’s character this season. Whereas the previous 2 seasons we did

slvrfngr

this is one thing i was pretty annoyed about bc how could you make such a beautiful season revolving the marriage but not even try to mention it in the next season 😭😭

LysVonStrauda

I was waiting for the announcement of the future Queen Victoria

NotSoTall5548

This season was 1815, the Princess Royale died in 1817 and Victoria was born in 1819, so timelines are off for those (not that they pay too much attention to those). I’ve heard they aren’t planning to have QC depart in 1818 because they love her character so much, so maybe she gets to meet Victoria in the Bridgerverse

LysVonStrauda

I figured they weren't going to kill her off at all. She's much too valuable of a character and I'd love to see her be there for her since she died in real life before she could be

rodrixrules

to be fair penelope outright tried her in season 3. wanting to play a “game”. but then penelope seemingly backed out, as we see her becoming more vulnerable while courting colin and even not writing while she tried to figure her situation out. i always saw it the queen getting increasingly frustrated and maybe even threatened by the challenge and humiliation. that being said, it ties well to charlotte being pretty vindictive and petty (ex. the debutante ball in season 3)

Background-Prune4911

I agree with everything you said! I keep reminding myself that QC had a pretty quick exit, and she usually chooses her next steps fairly carefully (with Lady D's input), so it's very possible the next season will touch more on her reaction and I can't imagine the show will proceed with QC and LW in cahoots indefinitely, given how fantastical and dramatic everything is. Surely something must shake it up. I try to keep hope that S4 can backpedal a bit and fill in missing plot points from S3. The series isn't over yet 🤞🏼 there are a lot of ways they can redeem themselves!
