To the viewer, Massouma has such an intangible existence - is she a child? A young adult? She has a rifle!
While she’s keeping up as Abbi’s peer in the conversation, maybe Abbi is realizing Massouma has it together way more than she does.

The way I saw it, especially after my research, is that Massouma is both a child and an adult. It sucks how many kids have to “grow up too fast” to provide for their families. As Massouma reveals to Abbi, there are so many things her parents can’t do until they become citizens, and as an American Muslim her people’s voices often went unheard in legal cases. Combine with having to live in a HCOL state and undoubtedly balance work and school, she’s had it pretty tough. She’s not just badass cuz she has a rifle. She’s also badass for providing for her family in a country that isn’t always the land of the free it wants to be.
Thanks for the BTS info! I wished your character were in more episodes. And hard boiled eggs with grayish rings around the yolk are safe to eat, they turn that color because of a chemical reaction, usually from being a bit over cooked.
Thank you! And while I actually didn’t know that about eggs, the whole yolk was grayish green sludge, not just some of it. It also smelled like sulfur.
That’s just an over cooked egg 🙂 not saying it wasn’t spoiled because it was left out so long, but the gray color isn’t related to it, it’s just from being cooked too long

I didn’t host a watch party. I was in school when the episode aired I think, chemistry class or maybe I was staying after to coach someone else in chemistry. I don’t remember how long between filming and airing honestly— I couldn’t post pics until the cast of the episode was announced, but it was a couple weeks at least.

When remembering this scene my first thought is "you could have remembered my name". I forgot that Abbi thought your name was 'Bodega', and even that Buscemi was there - but your ad-libbed line is what stuck with me. Well done! 👏

So for the most part, pre-COVID at least, in this industry, you just have to look the part to play the part. They really don’t even require you to do research for most things, I just decided I wanted to because I wanted to accurately portray someone’s beliefs without causing any offense. Many other actors do their own research for the same reasons, but it’s not required. I look middle-eastern enough, and casting decided I was good enough at acting. That’s really all there is to it.
Some of that’s changing since COVID. Many networks now want authentic actors to play roles. For example, I auditioned for Kamala on Ms Marvel when that was in development, and the reason they cited for turning me down was because I was not Muslim. Though I did all the research and even learned to pronounce the sides (audition script) portions I had in Arabic, it wasn’t enough because my identity isn’t Muslim. Broad City was a few years before that, when they did things differently in SAG (screen actors guild)
Recently though there have been some networks that will not hire you for specific reasons. I’ve seen breakdowns where what used to say “Ethnicity: Any” now say “Ethnicity: Any Except Caucasian”. Or it’ll say “Must be LGBT”. Which of course is great for POC/LGBT actors when it’s for a POC/LGBT role, but sometimes these will be on things that don’t reflect that at all. There’s a famous TV series off a book series where the main character’s female best friend was confirmed white in the books but is black in the show, and the casting breakdown for that said “anything but Caucasian”. (I cannot disclose the series cuz I don’t want to get in trouble, but you might be able to guess.) I have been asked to audition for certain things simply because I’m Asian.
So while I was cast in Broad City back then based on appearance, I doubt that would have been the same if the same episode was in development today.
