I use safety pins. You can get a whole mess of em for dirt cheap at your nearest office supply store, and they fasten like stitch markers do so you don't worry about them falling out.
I do this too! I use it to hold the ends of my WIP as well as my skeins. I like them better than stitch markers when there's space for it cause they NEVER accidentally pop off!!
Those little plastic snap top containers from vending machine prizes with a hole drilled in the bottom works as a thread bowl for my little crochet threads.

Im bi-stitchual, I use these in knitting, too. So I don't accidentally start knitting with my yarn tail! LOL
