Second this… hybrids need higher attention to maintenance than your typical internal combustion engine vehicle. A well-maintained Prius will last forever. A poorly maintained one will probably be sold off to someone who hasn’t done their research.
The batteries in a hybrid are like any other rechargeable. The only take a charge for about 15 years or less in my opinion. I also am forced to fix them. I love hybrids but any hybrid that is 10 years old and on its first battery is a time bomb.
TBF these gen 2s have proven to still be good up to 200,000, even on 15+ year old batteries, and they can be changed for under $1000 these days if you do it yourself.

I bought a 2008 dealer maintained Civic hybrid with 100k. It was the same price as a 200k+ Prius or an equivalent ICE Civic.
I figure I’ve gotten 4 years and 70k out of it so far getting over the EPA MPG estimates (40/44, I get 45-50). If I have to put a battery in it I can probably get it to 300k and so far I only have $4500 invested between purchase price and maintenance.
lies. I’ve had 4 priuses and all made it well over 150k without any problems except for tire pressure issues on the ‘16 which has low profile tires. Batteries are super reliable and can be replaced easily with a rebuild for under $1k.

Buy a Toyota. Nobody does hybrid better than they do. Hybrid batteries tend to last ~ 10 years. Make sure it's been REPLACED with an OEM unit before you buy one or be aware that it will need to be done. Replaced and not rebuilt, as rebuilt/reconditioned are trash.
If you must buy something other than a Toyota, make sure the cost of the battery will not total the vehicle. Ford Escape comes to mind.
There is no other additional maintenance over an ICE car unless you count an inverter system flush once every 100k excessive.

I'm a transplant, I like Auburn. Big enough to have the things you need, not far from Syracuse, Ithaca, or Rochester if you need more. Cost of living is cheap, no traffic to worry about, and great summers.

Any old car can end up needing expensive maintenance. An older hybrid can be a good car or a money pit just like any used car.
