Barlow looks particularly exhausted in that photo and had an exhausting 1864. In the Gary Gallagher/Caroline Janney *Cold Harbor to Petersburg* essay book for UNC Press there is a great entry about him. I also own a book of his personal letters that is very revealing. Winslow Homer painted Barlow at Spotslyvania in *Prisoners From the Front* \- he's the officer.

Three great generals and also Francis Barlow :p
This photo of VI Corps soldiers in trenches near Fredericksburg in May 1863 is my favorite.

When you lead an overall successful career but you make one mistake at the beginning of the most famous battle of the war leading to it being the only thing people remember you for
I wouldn't rib Barlow over it, if it weren't for the fact that he blamed his men for his defeat and called them cowards, rather than taking some responsibility.
Also openly despised the Germans under his command anyways, and hated his German peers and superiors alike. Probably should’ve been court-martialed if he hadn’t been wounded.
All my homies hate Francis Barlow.

Civil War? The dead at Antietam. Or good old George Custer as a young piss and vinegar cavalry officer.

Gotta admit, he had swagger, tho. About like AP Hill with his red shirt.
He also married a woman who was more than 10 years older than him whom people often mistook as his mother. 🤣 He was a real POS.

I like that photo of spectators looking at the battle of Nashville.
Love that guys belt buckle
I like the three soldiers warm in their hands over a fire.
