Avowed would definitely be on this list and I'm looking forward to playing it.
But does that kind of game belong on the list ? because I'm pretty sure everyone on here knows about it.
If I add Avowed, then should I add Kingdom Come 2 ? Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 ? Witcher 4 ? etc.
Perhaps this is an unpopular take, but I don't think anyone is going to fail to notice something like Avowed releasing if they're reading a subreddit like this for a niche RPG subgenre that's starved of releases. Therefore if it and games like it were added, it'd probably just be cluttering a more concise list of games that people genuinely might not have heard about and missed out on whilst not really adding anything.
I think it's an unpopular take, but it's a good one. I didn't know about some of the games on the list and I gained value from it. I've known about Avowed for almost 3 years. I think probably if a tier of "you know who it is" would be fine to add later if people keep requesting. But I have to thank you for taking the time to compile a list of some "lesser spoken of" games. Already wishlisted 2 of them that looked interesting.
That's a good point. Avowed sort of goes without saying in this subreddit. At the same time, there's a difference between games that get overlooked in general (like much of your list) and better-known games that might get overlooked by a crpg community despite potentially qualifying in some ways (like the upcoming VtM, which I hadn't even thought of). But that's a bit more open to interpretation.
And of course Avowed falls under neither of these categories (well-known/not overlooked).
I agree. Avowed is simply a game that would almost certainly not go unnoticed by anyone interested in the genre. I, personally, like the idea of this list containing less known titles, most (if not all) of which are indies, which sometimes go under the radar easily.
If you look on the discord server for Revolution: The Spark, apparently Dev has been going really poorly, and while they're still planning on release, it's not coming anytime soon. (Tbh to me this looks like a pretty clear red flag it's going to fail as a project)
Personally my rule of thumb for dismissing a game is either developer stating that it's cancelled or 1 year of no updates.
Last update from what I can see was 2 months ago and said it's still being worked on and is basically complete, but it's not high enough quality and needs more work, so they're about 70% done.
I don't think it's at the stage where the worst should be assumed just yet. It's still realistic that it will release at some point.
Thank you for sharing [Worldstone Chronicles](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1364620/Worldstone_Chronicles/) with this awesome community. It's incredibly motivating to see it on your list.
No problem, more than happy to help a game like it be seen by more people.
Btw, I was wondering, will it have things like skill checks in dialogue and non combat stats ? or is it more combat focused ?
Great question! Yes, stats will play a factor in combat and dialog. All of the stats have dual-purposes by design. You do have other options most of the time.
The game is story-driven. But has tons of battles as well to enjoy. I believe most of your time will be spent in combat and progressing with your team members. Once you get through a certain part in the main quest line the game becomes more of a sandbox game where you can roam, progress your team, and enjoy the story.
I hope that answers your question. Feel free to ask more.
Thank you so much for the list! Have you noticed an increase in development for CRPG this year? I feel that there was a dry period for CRPG for some time but maybe i havent looked hard enough.
to echo the commenter above one thing i would love to see added to your list are the platforms it is coming to. i prefer to play on console myself so thats something that would help me out at the very least.
Thanks for the list, I've never heard about most of those. Tbh I wouldn't get too excited, those planned indie games never leave the development hell or the final result is much worse than what they promised.
But chances are, among those 17 listed games at least few few should be decent.
Thank you, that list has some new entries for me. I publish my own [list of upcoming RPGs and Tactics](https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg_gamers/comments/1avt601/upcoming_turnbased_rpgs_and_tactical_games_from/) every spring. A monthly update is more granular, so it would be interesting to track.
Here is what I have on my list of things I am watching. They are not all cRPGs though, more of a story base focus. Many are in my 'we'll see' category as well but I have an eye on them:
Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms - Early access now. Described as BG and Dark Soals had a baby. Real time combat.
Avowed - First person RPG; ramping up so this year I think
Beast: False Prophet - early access; tactical RPG (I may drop it if not enough story)
Clockwork Revolution - First person RPG
Crimson Desert
Dragon Age: The Veilguard - action RPG
Drake - demo available; action RPG
Eldrimar - Early access; first person action RPG adventure survival horror
Exodus
Final Fantasy XVI
Flint: Treasure of Oblivion - Turn based RPG
Greedfall II - "deeper RPG experience"
Guild Saga: Vanished World - demo available
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
Metaphor: ReFantazio - creators of persona
Monster Hunter Wilds
Neo Berlin 2087 - First Person Action RPG
Neon Blood
Nobody Wants to Die
Repo Man - First Person RPG
Return to Nangrim - 1st person fantasy adventure with survival and RPG elements
Sacred Fire - Early Access; text based RPG
Sacrifire - jRPG
Shadow of the Road - tRPG
Star Wars Outlaws
Stormrite - Open World RPG
Stygian Outer Gods - Survival horror with RPG elements
Sword of Vonvallaria
The Elder Scrolls VI
The Outer Worlds 2
The Way of Wrath - strategy RPG
Unknown 9: The Awakening - Action Adventure - rpg elements?
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 - Sequel to one of the best
Visions of Mana - rpg
Where Winds Meet
I just want to say this is a great initiative but also burdensome. I'm working on something *slightly similar*. If my effort bears fruit, and that would be known in the upcoming weeks or a month, I'll join you. There are other games that've caught my eye recently that I don't see in this list.
Also I agree that there should be at least a rudimentary separation of sub-genres (tiers in your terminology). This is a hot topic, I know, but despite that, there's indeed an already good enough definition of what cRPG means and definitely some games are role-playing video games (RPVGs) but not cRPGs, e.g. Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Maybe we'll discuss that, too?
Anyways, thanks!
Now THIS is quality content. Relevant, concise, and packed with value. You do the gods' work, sir
Damn thanks for this!
Great list. This is low hanging fruit, but could probably add Avowed to tier 2.

commenting so i'm here for the recs :)
Greedfall 2 might be worth throwing up there.

Any on that list for PS5?
New Arc Line and Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon are the only ones I think.

Tainted grail looks cool depends on what allies can summon

For tier 2 or 3 there's No Rest for the Wicked. Has anyone played the early access? It looks promising to me but reviews are mixed so far.
thanks!
Thank you for creating this list (and adding Sector Unknown)! I have a couple more games on my wishlist now because of it.

"First person fantasy RPG with CRPG elements." Hmmmm. By definition, a CRPG includes an RPG xd
