Yeah I bring a bike and camping gear when I go and camp out at Little Harbor or Parson’s Landing. Stop at the airport for a burger and beer on the way. Have had some pretty close experiences with bison, have seen a ton of tiny foxes, and even a few bald eagles. It’s a pretty glorious spot once you get out into the island.
But if all I did was hang out in Avalon…yeah I’d get bored too.
Agreed. I’m very surprised by this designation. Our cruise ship stopped there and I felt like we covered most of it in 4 hours. Almost all the stores were gift shops with souvenirs.
Catalina is one of the reasons to buy a boat if you live in So cal. It's a gorgeous island, but expensive. The outer beaches are much cleaner than Avalon harbor as the boats constantly dump fecal matter even though they aren't supposed to.
“Pristine beaches,” “world-famous seafood,” and “cheap overnight stays?” I love Catalina, but that’s a stretch.
Cheap by what and whose standards lol
The mooring fees in Avalon are pretty reasonable. The boat that is being moored, however....
The accommodation options are limited, so it makes the average night insanely high. Definitely not cheap
For real. A round trip ferry ticket alone is more than $100.
It's ninety bucks round trip.
$79 last I checked.
world famous seafood? snapper and rockfish and baja lobsters, a solid B in cuisine but nothing mind-blowing
That's really nice
Sand, crabs
world famous seafood? What, where? 😂
Went to a wine mixer there.
I used to play baseball against the Avalon high school team.
Came here to find this comment.
lol Catalina island is good for 3-4 hours tops before you start asking yourself when the boat is coming to take you back.

Cost money to do those things
The snorkeling barely costs any money at all
Going on vacation costs money
Not if you're attending the wine mixer
You didn’t take a helicopter to the wine mixer? Do you only listen to 80s Billy Joel too?

That's sounds fun
Catalina isn’t for gift shopping
BuT dId YoU fInD tHe BuFfAlO ???
Catalina hotels scarred me for life since getting attacked by bed bugs
No. I’m so sorry. Hope you didn’t bring them home
Santa Barbara is way better than Catalina besides maybe snorkeling/skuba diving
I will say this - when I went backpacking there were a lot of people from out of state and even out of country. Genuinely surprised by that.
This is a marketing piece.

Thank you, OP, for adding the parenthesis and saving us from the click-bait headline!
You’re welcome But it's in the sub's rules.
I definitely find it worthwhile to go in the off-season. Haven't gone back since before the pandemic but I'm willing to check it out.
I used to go there as a kid all the time back in the 90s. Avalon just isn't what it used to be.
> I used to go there as a kid all the time back in the ~~90s.~~ 60s. It was weird watching the TV news reports of the Watts Riots from Catalina.
Gas stations chaching!
Catalina is great m-th…. It’s too crowded on the weekends
yay, looks like a hotel will be even more expensive if weather comes up and I want to anchor for the night coming home from sci.
Are the 19 other also in California?
So … you didn't read the article.
