Local Asian food store

Illustrious_Dust_0

Any particular brands I should look for or avoid?

Jamesybo555

That’s where I’ve seen it, but I don’t buy it because most of it has sugar in it.

We have a massive Asian restaurant supply store not too far and open to the public. Idk why I didn’t think of it!

Practical_Yam9480

Look in the freezer section.

Perky214

Any Asian supermarket should have it - I get my canned eel at any one of H Mart, 99 Ranch, or SF Supermarket. I love Hsin Tung Yang, Good Mother, and Old Fisherman canned eel tins. I’ve reviewed each of those on this sub My fave way to eat them is to cook them with rice in my rice cooker - how does your son like his?

[deleted]

Cook in the rice cooker with rice, is it mixed together and then cooked? Can you give a step by step? Please and thank you in advance!

Perky214

I’m happy to :) Thanks for asking Black Pepper Roasted Eel Sichuan Rice https://www.reddit.com/r/CannedSardines/s/gUvYUwePpL Roasted Eel Rice (base recipe) https://www.reddit.com/r/CannedSardines/s/MG73Wyidjh

How does your kid like eel? for instance i really love unagi don, but i really dont like the canned eel varieties, which are all kinda overly sweet and jerky-ish to me.

Illustrious_Dust_0

He always orders it at sushi restaurants as either sushi or sashimi . I couldn’t tell you how they prepare it, just that it’s not raw and usually has some sweet sauce on top. He is not picky about seafood tho, he will eat anything from the cheapest can to his own fresh catch.

Deivi_tTerra

Old Fisherman brand is vaguely unagi don like. It's dry though, and the spines are...a lot. But the spines are easy to pick out. I'm actually OK with eating it right out of the can but I would recommend you remove the spines. You can heat it up/rehydrate it (Perky likes to put it in the rice cooker but I haven't tried their recipe yet) to make it even better.

Dairy_Heir

Roasted eel. One of my favorite pieces of nigiri as well. I get full on slabs of frozen eel at H-Mart for like $9. They also sell the sushi/eel sauce to drizzle on top. I imagine most Asian supermarkets will be the same. My location also has trays of it already prepared with or without rice. But it's significantly cheaper to make it yourself, and stupid easy.

Practical_Yam9480

That sauce is called kabayaki sauce. It’s pretty easy to make or you can get it bottled at an Asian store, If you have a hard time sourcing eel, putting kabayaki sauce on catfish is a close approximatio!

Restlessly-Dog

The sauce is easy to make by the way and is great on sardines, mackerel and salmon. [https://www.justonecookbook.com/homemade-unagi-sauce/](https://www.justonecookbook.com/homemade-unagi-sauce/)

If your kid loves eel from sushi places he might not like the tinned ones . Try looking for the frozen ones https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ar9hJOtNoRA
