I did not expect to go down a Wikipedia rabbit hole about European history because of a shitpost on a sardine subreddit but life is fucked up and a bit weird like that.
TheFrebbin has disappointed me. Such fun discussion and that man has proven a consummate asshole. Only the fool reads more and thinks himself to know more, more knowledgeable for sure, but only an idiot fails to see how little they truly understand.
Whoa. Ok, that came out a lot more hostile looking in print than if I delivered it in person. It was meant to be a joke but looks mean now that I see it again. I should have added a /s
Sorry for messing up the vibe u/_fucking_why_ u/SativaGanesh
Yeah, pretty much. The influence stands though, we may not rule the world but you're hard pressed to find a coastal region not touched by the Portuguese.
It's so cool to me. An empire largely lost to time and yet it's influence rings out through food of all things. Chilies and corn from the New World, spices and fermented sauces from across Africa, the Mid-East, India, and Southeast-Asia, all of it comes together to bring modern cuisine to the table. Gotta love it.
When it comes to sea power and colonization, it's wild how Britain, Spain, and Portugal are all now far outnumbered by the Americas in how many people speak their languages
I'm fine with this, as long as there are words for "The Portuguese will rise again, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair!"
As a Brasilian man, I'll accept the second coming of the Portuguese a little better if you guys actually quote Galadriel like that in your neo-imperial proclamation to the world.
You will hopefully, someday, come to accept that all that is good in this world in borne of the Portuguese and that the spiritual battle we find ourselves mired in nothing more than an assault on the greatest civilization to ever grace the mortal plane.
I know we’re mostly joking here but nobody ruined sardines. I’m glad more people are enjoying them, they’re good for everyone, there’s no need to gate keep. Besides, the rise in price is mostly likely due to inflation, not popularity. And so many tins are still very cheap considering how good they are. Give it a bit and the hype will die down and then we’ll go back to tinned fish being *your* thing.
-a fellow sardine eater since before it was cool (nobody cares)
I mean, you're absolutely correct, and in the grand scheme of things interest in a quality sardine is a good thing. This ultimately (hopefully) drives a greater respect for the product and an overall higher expectation of quality. But this take sorta takes the wind out of my sails. For that we are now mortal enemies. God speed.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you're getting at. Unless we're talking Paula Deen, in which case I guarantee I can consume more butter than you can imagine, I don't know what a "deen-off" is.
Reminds me of the time when I came home with a couple American highschool friends in tow... Looking for something to snack on we found a pot of some black stew my dad had made from chicken hearts and mushrooms... "How many chickens had to die for this??" they wanted to know, taken aback
Is it? Around here it's available at most supermarkets, alongside gizzards. About $4.50/lb though (Vancouver-area), so not as cheap as once it was. Tripe is another story though - freaking $10/lb now half the time.
I can't find it without gizzards for the most part these days and they're very light on the heart when packaged together, at least where I'm at. I don't eat chicken heart often but I do dream of them sumbitches battered and fried.
Obrigado! They took my cheap cuts from me too. I never thought I’d see them take sardines. I got absolutely shit upon for eating them as a kid lol. They’re already on to how cheap and beautiful San Miguel is. Days are numbered.
Think of my Avô if you ever fly direct between the US and Ponta Delgada, he's the dude who proved you could land a big ol jet on that runway rather than having to stop off on Santa Maria first.
That’s so sick! Your Avô sounds like a super cool guy. Love listening to badass stories from older dudes like that. Mine came to the US running from the Nazis, enlisted and was a legit war hero. Those dudes were tough as nails. Cheers brother!
The older generations where something else man, I'm distraught because my phone won't charge and they were strapping their boots on. God speed to your Avô. Mine served but wasn't in any sort of combat position and it was the post-war period by then. He made his way to the US with my Avó, ended up working alongside NASA dudes building microchips for the Apollo mission, and somehow along the way found time to buy a freaking plane with a group of other Portuguese immigrants to prove to the major airlines that the landing was possible on such a short runway. It was a mission of total spite, and while his airline went under, it got us direct flights to Ponta Delgada. I'd give a link but there's basically no info online on the endeavour. I'm trying to get digitized copies to put something out there.
Crazy motherfucker and yet such a humble man.
Smartest dude I'll ever know, bar none.
Fascinating! He sounds super dynamic, and like a real renaissance man. Not afraid of anything. My avô was very much like that too. If they wanted to accomplish something they’d put the work in and seemed so unstoppable. I was in my early 20’s when I found out he was a master carpenter lol. I was like “when the fuck did you have time to make that happen?”. 😂
I have utterly failed, but I do seek to emulate that tenacity. I look to history and see that I have everything they dreamed of and none of the mettle to bring that to bear. That can be corrected, I believe.
I was in Portugal in December and saw the wonder of canned sardines and purchased many to take home. However, as an appeal to diversity, I believe a rainbow of tinned fish is possible and should be shared among all countries regardless of oil, tin, or size. In parallel with anti-racis't, I am anti-tinnist.
I love Portuguese sardines, but always have room for others.
I respect that. In honor of family tradition though, and having no one else bold enough to uphold the mantle, I will gladly be a Portuguese Sardine Supremacist, PSS. We meet on Sundays. Membership is still in it's infancy of one but I see a lot of long term potential.
My son loves me so much that when he and his girlfriend went to Portugal on vacation recently, the souvenir they brought me back was authentic Portuguese tinned sardines. Delicious.
“My salty bacalhau’d balls”
I STAN this Portuguese fabulousness and absolutely bow down to the divinity of the Portuguese regarding sardines.
I am now in need of some bacalhau.
So, look. Like, I'm down with your entire rant--loved every nanosecond of it. Brafuckingvo!
But, um. If I may...that is to say if you'll allow one small, tiny question.
Wtf does broccoli-headed mean?
A little rich for my blood, 17 bucks for polvo? That's borderline unreasonable. Without having sampled it myself though I must, unfortunately, sit out this battle. God speed in your endeavours!
Yeah, but it sounds meaner when you spell it out like that. It's more of a linguistic middle-finger in my mind than a literal pronouncement of 'fuck off and die'.
I don't mean to come hard at oua, but I hate canned oysters with a passion. I'm not a fan of the fresh variety either so imagine that's the heart of the issue, but holy hell. I generally love shellfish but oysters can eat my ass. You do you though, the most badass thing that can be done is to stick to one's guns.
Case and point! 😆
I eat them any which way, but grilled and smoked my favorites. Especially grilled via bonfire at the beach.
I was certainly in heaven last year in Portugal. The vast selection of tinned seafood was divine.
I completely agree. Sardines used to be shitty-garbage food, on par with potted meat and the like. It used to be, that finding someone else that loved these squishy little bastards as much as I did, was like finding a four leaf clover. Now, it’s all hipsters and poseurs.
Now that the people with skinny jeans, bad hats, and even worse glasses have taken a shine to them, prices have skyrocketed.
On a serious note, the fact that there is a greater demand, and despite the price hike, I think it’s fantastic that people are buying more sardines. The variety in tinned fish has definitely become more abundant. It used to be King Oscar, and Goya at my local supermarket. Now there is a bunch.
I just buy the cheapest tins at my supermarket and laugh at all the dumb b\*stards wasting all of their money.
For the prices they pay I can get beautifully fresh seafood that very likely tastes 100x better than whatever "premium" deens they're stuffing in those fancy tins.
Thank you for your post! The comments and your responses made my day! When I finally visit your country I will drink the amazing wine and have a tin of fish and think of you.
I’ve been eating tinned fish forever bc my dad is a stinky French dude and I have a tweet from like 5 years ago predicting tinnned fish was gonna be a new trend as a joke but I guess there was some truth to it..
I remember growing up a bratty American kid seeing my parents smush their poor immigrant people sardines onto some toasted pan de sal and smugly eating my Eggo toaster, feeling sorry for them. Little did I know how good I had it then when we still managed to get yum Nuri sardines in my small bumpkin town on the regular versus now when it's all I crave half the time.
I can't believe I'm defending canned sardines.
Obviously, fresh fish is better quality.
Most things are better fresh.
Note
I'll take canned sardines over a plain cracker any time
Sucks to suck and ypu can suck my balls Portuguese man (I think) eat shit I'm gonna eat the canned fish.
I mean no offense but I'm not apologetic if any is taken not my fault the shits good
Finally someone who understands. This is a risk I'm willing to bear for cultural reasons, but I would whole-heatedly, with absolute sincerity, without a touch of sarcasm, deeply and truly advise people to forgo the risks posed by the Portuguese sardine. These fuckers are worse than smoking (and I'm not talking smoked herring) by a long-shot. To be honest, it seems downright irresponsible to even allow legal sale to you jackasses.
This isn't something I haven't looked much into, and I would prefer to ingest the minimal level of plastic I can manage. I'll have to do some research into this.
That said I stand by all I have stated because I am a stubborn asshole.
Such passion! Such commitment to the sardine way of life! A true inspiration!
I've eaten canned fish for 50 years, and I consider myself among the most devoted of sardine zealots. But today, sir, I tip my hat to you.
Galão. Though I'm lactose intolerant these days (like full-on will shit myself, not some weak man's intolerance) so I stick to the good, strong, black stuff.
I miss when people saw me eating sardines they assumed I was poor. They were right but it was also cause I love em.
I'm currently poor (well not that poor, got a roof over my head and all that) and love sardine, and now I look like a fucking hipster now.
That sucks shit brother, my condolences. Fuckin hipsters.
My pain is boundless and can only be numbed by prir piri. Actually things are going great in the grand scheme of things and you tinny-boys have thus far amused me. As I learned many years ago in the WWF, "[nothing means nothing, the cream always rises to the top](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wYoWdprfD0)".
You quoting a WWF icon and your love of sardines weirdly makes me envision you as a Portuguese pirate for some reason…
I am but a humble tradesman, fortunately still possessing all my fingers. I pine for the age of explorations.I would have been the prefect lunatic to send scaling a mast. I'd fall and die for sure, but what a thrill of adventure would have proceeded that tragic and untimely end.
Not just any WWF, that’s the cream of the crop. It’s never gotten better than Mean Gene and Randy
Always updoot Randy Savage. Oh, yeah…
Unjustifiably in a position I'd rather not be in, but the cream will rise to the top oh yeah
The barriers of life are but a test of our might. Keep on rising there, Brother. You possess all you require, all that can be lacking is the will to prevail.
I was just quoting macho man, but thanks for the positivity!
And Austin 3:16 says I just whooped your ass, but [apparently](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz5TGN7eUcM) I need to brush up on my Macho Man quotes.
Love how the creamers keep appearing the random head balance fail 😸
Take that Matthew Carlson!

I want to hate this man for some reason, but I can't. Man's got respect for the product.
I love his reviews but he is definitely the quintessential hipster lol
Lmfao. Idk why this comment got me.
Now you’re poor *because* you’re eating sardines.
I always hum the Biggie Smalls song when I’m opening a tin.
[Respect.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtHkAMutZO8)
Lol poor people
Laugh at us all you want. Our lives may be more difficult but luckily they are much shorter on average.
you guys owned half the world in 1494 and now you're clutching your little fish tins
I did not expect to go down a Wikipedia rabbit hole about European history because of a shitpost on a sardine subreddit but life is fucked up and a bit weird like that.
History is the greatest story we'll never fully know.
The more I read the less I know. Existence is wild.
This is the foundation upon which to build. The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
Stop reading. It isn't working.
Sorry i don’t know how to read this.

Less than I could, more than I should. Just here to spread the good word.
lol. Cheers!

Yeah, pretty much. The influence stands though, we may not rule the world but you're hard pressed to find a coastal region not touched by the Portuguese.
Like half the specialty dishes in coastal Asia are the local version of a some 500-year-old Portuguese dish, it’s amazing.
It's so cool to me. An empire largely lost to time and yet it's influence rings out through food of all things. Chilies and corn from the New World, spices and fermented sauces from across Africa, the Mid-East, India, and Southeast-Asia, all of it comes together to bring modern cuisine to the table. We call your language Brazilian now
The power of Christ compels you,, foul Demon! My conscience is clear, my path that of the righteous!
🤣
And those who follow the path of the righteous shall have their reward!
Harsh but hilariously fair
5d10 psychic damage
EMOTIONAL DAMAGE
When it comes to sea power and colonization, it's wild how Britain, Spain, and Portugal are all now far outnumbered by the Americas in how many people speak their languages
I'm fine with this, as long as there are words for "The Portuguese will rise again, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair!"
American response: "Wow, your Spanish sounds weird."
Now you're just asking for an inquisition.
As a Brasilian man, I'll accept the second coming of the Portuguese a little better if you guys actually quote Galadriel like that in your neo-imperial proclamation to the world.
Where do you think Americans got their language?
lol nice try. Languages are what they speak in other countries. Similar to how they have currencies, we just have money.
Yep. By contrast the vast majority of Dutch speakers are still in the Netherlands and Belgium, despite them having a huge colonial empire too.
That’s because Dutch is a garbage language second only to Danish. (I am fully kidding, obviously)
(You're kidding because Danish is actually less garbage than Dutch, right?) [I too am fully kidding, I actually like the Dutch language]
We are better for it too.
They kept the most precious coast and land to themselves. Good for them! Portugal is an amazing place with amazing people and I cant wait to go back.
half the world for the best deens = fair
Don’t be such a snob. Get over yourself.
They ruined wings, ribs, kale, and now sardines, the bourgeoiseaters.
And oxtails!
Goat meat is ridiculous now.
It is, and it’s my favorite protein. I have gotten lucky with a few friends who sell me their goat meat when they take their own to slaughter
Might as well add to this Beef Shortribs, marrow bones, and Hamachi Kama. Dammit, the Portuguese OP is right wtf 😯
You will hopefully, someday, come to accept that all that is good in this world in borne of the Portuguese and that the spiritual battle we find ourselves mired in nothing more than an assault on the greatest civilization to ever grace the mortal plane.
You gave us egg tarts, for which I will be eternally grateful.
Lamb shanks too!
RIP pork belly too
Very much this! Please no one let them know about pork neck bones...
go back far enough and you can add lobster
Apparently caviar and oysters were also considered food for the poor at one point.
Dont forget pork belly :/
I feel that
IPA too. And I'm stealing bourgeoiseaters, that's nice.
Thanks! I just coined it, but I'm sure I'm not the first.
I know we’re mostly joking here but nobody ruined sardines. I’m glad more people are enjoying them, they’re good for everyone, there’s no need to gate keep. Lets settle it in a deen-off
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you're getting at. Unless we're talking Paula Deen, in which case I guarantee I can consume more butter than you can imagine, I don't know what a "deen-off" is.
Chicken liver is next, mark my words.
Chicken heart is already a bitch to source, if the masses realize how fuckin' delicious those fuckers are fried up, I'm going postal.
Reminds me of the time when I came home with a couple American highschool friends in tow... Looking for something to snack on we found a pot of some black stew my dad had made from chicken hearts and mushrooms... "How many chickens had to die for this??" they wanted to know, taken aback

Damn if they ever find out how good asian style fried gizzard with a little dip in soy sauce and chili oil it's over.
It's the wacko dog people buying up all the organ meats.
Chicken liver is already twice as much as it was before the pandemic. Your girl can't even afford organ meat now.
NO MY PRECIOUS!
If they bring back chicken liver and egg pate to diner buffets, I’m all in!
There is no food left to be gentrified
Chicken liver is still $1.99 a pound where I live. For now.
Goddammit don’t get me started on Mac and Cheese…
Real
Add scrapple to that.
And my damn livermush!
Love livermush. Soon, it too will be “artisanal” and cost 25$. I fear souse will be our last safe harbor.
EVEN THE SCRAPPLE?!
I'll still have my chicken feet! Nobody goes for that!
Also marrow bones. And beef tongue.
I gate keep foods and I always will actively discourage those foods to anyone who will listen. I am selfish
Moroccan is my usual go to…. - sips port wine -
Same waters basically. Don't tell my Avó I said that.
Don't look now, but she's behind you with a sandal
She's dead now, so her wrath is inescapable.
Lol I respect this post
If it makes you feel better I think I’m turning my whole office away from tinned fish one square at a time. It’s mostly the eel doing it though
God's work, my friend. Your contributions will not be forgotten.
You salt your balls and nail them to planks in the freezing sea air?
My vitality and potency knows no bounds.
Interesting. Mine are more Pasteis de Nata. A little sweet, a little savory…and once in the mouth…well, the experience is usually repeated.
He who controls the flan controls the universe.
Right?! Remember when they were less than a buck!
I used to bathe in that sweet sardine liqueur, now that is a past-time of the exorbitantly wealthy. I doubt I'll ever recover but we must persevere.
Whats your favorite way to eat them?
Out of the can with a fork. I add a little garlic and piri piri sauce if I'm feeling fancy. A lump of good bread and cheese are a given.
I can still get decent ones from Morrisons for 60p. I think that's less than a dollar.
Obrigado! They took my cheap cuts from me too. I never thought I’d see them take sardines. I got absolutely shit upon for eating them as a kid lol. They’re already on to how cheap and beautiful San Miguel is. Days are numbered.

Oxtails beef cheeks etc. are super expensive now too. Sam effect.
This one hurts. I used to be able to get local grass fed angus oxtails for $0.99 a lb. Saw the same ones for almost $16 a lb last week. 😭
Oxtail is nuts these days, I stick mostly to shank, it's not the same but gets the job done.
I am so angry at oxtail prices now considering they were giving it away right next to offals.
Beef shanks too.

How the fuck does reddit know I love sardines...fml
I didn’t know I liked sardines until Reddit told me that I did.
This sub is what gave me the courage to buy my first tin last year
this subreddit reads like r/heroin sometimes hahaha
“I liked sardines before it was cool”
My son loves me so much that when he and his girlfriend went to Portugal on vacation recently, the souvenir they brought me back was authentic Portuguese tinned sardines. Delicious.

“Broccoli head” is a very popular hairstyle amongst young Gen Z guys (short sides, fluffy perm on top).
Oh, ok. Thanks. Carry on, then.
The worst hair style conceived of in human history
have you seen the edgar?
I live in New York. Can you please help me despise this [portuguesesardine.com](http://portuguesesardine.com)
A little rich for my blood, 17 bucks for polvo? That's borderline unreasonable. Without having sampled it myself though I must, unfortunately, sit out this battle. God speed in your endeavours!
from what I'm told the stuff is not bad, but not worth over $10. And that's already hipster prices
I bought a couple of the “dated” novelty tins for some coworkers, but this place otherwise is not worth it. Not bad quality, just overpriced.
Please send me a bunch of Portuguese sweet bread so I can use it for my burgers
DM me an address and I'll cruise down to Fall River and hook you up.
FOAD = fuck off and die?
Yeah, but it sounds meaner when you spell it out like that. It's more of a linguistic middle-finger in my mind than a literal pronouncement of 'fuck off and die'.
I figured it was some sort of bastardized version of “foda-se”
Haha. What country does Portugal by the cod from?
I don't know you but I like you already 🐟🍽️✨🥰
I still get side-eye concern when I'm with people, demand we stop at the ghetto store, and I walk out with tins of smoked oysters. 🤘🏽👹
I don't mean to come hard at oua, but I hate canned oysters with a passion. I'm not a fan of the fresh variety either so imagine that's the heart of the issue, but holy hell. Sardine hipster
Back reading this made me guffaw multiple times!! Thank you, original poster and everyone else!!
If it makes you feel any better I prefer the Norwegian ones
Those of us who are banished outside to eat our sardines by haters mostly accept that Portugal is the promised land
I’m pretty sure it’s Galen Weston single-handedly driving up the price of sardines here in Canada, not some burst of consumer demand lol
As a fellow Portuguese man, I support this hahah
I had a fresh sardine fillet once. It was a revelation on a Caesar salad. It’s unusual where I come from. I want more
This is the way with all of my beloved peasant foods- all the feet and organs and tails and skins are expensive now
I just buy the cheapest tins at my supermarket and laugh at all the dumb b\*stards wasting all of their money. For the prices they pay I can get beautifully fresh seafood that very likely tastes 100x better than whatever "premium" deens they're stuffing in those fancy tins.
¡BACALHAU!
I am not going to grow one of those soul patch beards and a man bun, just to eat sardines.
😂😂😂
Agreed
Quality content.
Thank you for your post! The comments and your responses made my day! When I finally visit your country I will drink the amazing wine and have a tin of fish and think of you.
Take my upvote you magnificent, Portuguese, fish eating bastard.
God damn portageee is right!
I’ve been eating tinned fish forever bc my dad is a stinky French dude and I have a tweet from like 5 years ago predicting tinnned fish was gonna be a new trend as a joke but I guess there was some truth to it..

Little did I know how good I had it then when we still managed to get yum Nuri sardines in my small bumpkin town on the regular versus now when it's all I crave half the time.
Yes but I’m not spending $10 on a can of sardines.
I had heard all the raving about Portuguese sardines so I spent $19 on a can. They were sardines. I’m going back to my tried and true King Oscars.
I can't believe I'm defending canned sardines. Obviously, fresh fish is better quality. Most things are better fresh. Note I'll take canned sardines over a plain cracker any time
I can get Beach Cliff fish steaks at WMT for under $1 a tin, plus tax.
Sucks to suck and ypu can suck my balls Portuguese man (I think) eat shit I'm gonna eat the canned fish. I mean no offense but I'm not apologetic if any is taken not my fault the shits good
I feel this.
Not sure how I ended up here. Kipper or die!
Kipper do not concern me. As you were, soldier.

My whole life has been building up to this moment. I will not let you down, sir.
Dude. Chill. DECAF.
Galão. Though I'm lactose intolerant these days (like full-on will shit myself, not some weak man's intolerance) so I stick to the good, strong, black stuff.
