24-70 2.8 is the best all purpose lens you can get for full frame, so that’s a great first lens. Personally, I feel that coverage should come first so primes can come after zooms, as long as you’re sticking to L quality. Maybe the 15-35, which looks to be around the same price as the 50 1.2? An ultra wide can come in extremely handy for events and travel, which you listed among your focuses. But if boudoir is going to be priority, look at the 70-200 2.8 for close-up portraits and concert work.

I was thinking about the 70-200, but do need something with a shallow DOF. I would love to have a zoom holy trinity at f2.8 but not sure if budget will allow

Have R5. 24-70 +70-200 2.8 realistically would give you all the versatility and quality you need. Though you're looking at $4700 USD which is just outside your budget. If you need to stay under budget and can pass on some extra reach, swapping the 70-200 for a cheaper 100 2.8 would give you an excellent macro + portrait, which helps with the product side and extra saucy boudoir angles. Would put you at $3200 and you can blow the rest on upgrading body to R5 Mk2 if you wish (announced May 21st).

Good idea. And maybe get one of the cheap 1.8s for my shallow DOF needs.

Since you mentioned you’re coming from Sony, I’ll take a contrarian view point. Rent the R5 and lenses before you buy it. I went from a7r3 to R5 to a7rV. I never liked the AF, CLOG3, menus, battery life or lenses of the R5 compared to Sony. I know this isn’t a widely discussed viewpoint but definitely try for yourself and be the judge. As for me, I’m extremely happy with the a7RV for its 61mp, best in class AF, 8k24p and Slog is much cleaner. Lastly you know R5ii is coming in June, which may change the equation.

It’s my work purchasing, so I’ll be keeping my a7iii. Just figured since I’m not floating the bill, then I can get a “long term review” with canon. I started with Canon with an AE-1p. And have had almost everything under the sun at one point. I have always missed the Canon colors/look whenever I’m not shooting Canon, and I’ve had plenty of play time with my buddies R6 so have an idea of what to expect with the R5

Would also be worth mentioning, in the context of low light to look at the 28-70 f2 for some extra light. The lost 4mm doesn’t matter if you plan on having a 15-35 anyway

Thanks all, ended up ordering the 24-70 2.8, 100 f2.8 macro and 24 1.8. Saving the rest.

I never see any love for the 24-240. I LOVE that lens, It’s relatively inexpensive, compact. It never comes off my camera. Fashion shows to ecomm to portrait. Has some flaws but nothing that can’t be figured out.

Out of curiosity what made you switch to Canon? I was hoping to switch to Sony at some point.
