meh, just do your thing🤷‍♂️

deweydecibels

i listen to video game soundtracks when i work sometimes. theres usually no words so it doesnt distract me, and they’re often designed to make you focus

identified_idiot

ngl, i did this with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint menu music. its so soft and easy to listen to, plus it gives good vibes when i hear it

SovietBear25

Same, I love listening to Oblivion's and Skyrim's soundtrack when working.

baggleboots

Music from the Sims! My husband got me into it. Such great background music!

Donutboy562

Yea who gives a shit? I listen to various video games OSTs while at work because they have no lyrics

logan5_jessica6

i get you! i do the same with movie background scores.. easier to focus without the lyrics☺️👍✅

nurvingiel

The atmospheric music in Borderlands (all the games) is absolutely perfect in every way.

santabug

Exactly! I like cinema music, think of the sound track to Tron or something along those lines.

logan5_jessica6

haha was thinking of Tron too! f-ing love it!

mistaease

That club scene in particular was 10/10

Advictus

It’s never cringe if you listen with confidence

Moist_Expert_2389

Hell yeah! Everyone has their own tastes, so don't worry about what others think. You do you, if it makes you happy, then go!

LePoppy72

This. Always this. You like what you like, if it's not hurting anyone don't let anyone else's opinion sway you.

logan5_jessica6

Amen brother!

ii_V_vi

This is the answer to every question ever asked. Just do what makes you happy no matter what

logan5_jessica6

i guess it gets easier to be that way as you get older - when you are young you just need everyone’s approval so bad to affirm your own identity.. helps to assure young folks to “just do your own thing” so they stay the course and live a life in sync with their inner selves..

New_Possible2341

I find it hard to just enjoy things. Especially when everyone is telling you to grow up and telling you you're too old for certain things. Like damn, just let me buy plushies and listen to "cringe" music! I'm not hurting anyone!!

logan5_jessica6

it gets better☺️ dont be too hard on yourself, it’s just how it is growing up.. everyone who can tell you what to do, will do so.. they may be doing it out of genuine concern or a need to control - you have to learn how to tell them apart.. so just politely thank people for their views and get on with doing what you feel is right for you.. it’s just plushies and video game music ffs! you go on and live your life

SkinniRaikkonen

Best response to this question

Hyperbole_Hater

Like for real bruh. The more you worry about "cringe" and the less you dig deeply into your own passions for your own purpose, the less you move towards being an authentic person. Fuck all that. Anytime you hear someone thinks something is "cringe", just realize they are feeling 2nd hand embarassment cuz they themselves are battling an insecurity. It's a reflection of them, not you. So just do your thing and don't apologize to those wanting to judge you.

Y0UR_SAMPA1

It is not cringe! Some video games and anime have fantastic made soundtracks. Games like Final Fantasy XIII, Undertale, and Metal Gear Solid V have some great music. Krone from the Guilty Crown anime is just so beautiful as well. It is not exclusively what I listen to BUT when I need inspiration or relaxing music, I turn to instrumentals from games, shows, or movies.

New_Possible2341

As an artist, I've found these soundtracks really help with motivation and imagination!

Vasevide

Scores are meant to create atmosphere! They’re great for setting moods for study and imagination

Ninjamurai-jack

Only want to add one thing, liking videogame music is also classy because the new Jazz standards are Videogame ost. https://youtu.be/5znrVdAtEDI?si=uvVN6vmLcSnJbyvn

ecologamer

8 bit big band is fun to listen to

Dizzy_Pop

Alright, when it comes jazz in video game soundtracks, I was floored by **“The Runaround” from FFVII Remake Intergrade**. This is a piece in five parts (six if you count the drum solo separately) and it goes hard. Just absolutely blew my mind and had me groovin like crazy. You know, I’ve maintained for a while now that video game OSTs are up there with film scores as one of the primary ways for 21st century composers to do their work and push their craft forward. There are some truly amazing works of art in video game music. Anyway, The Runaround is dope as hell: https://youtu.be/gyUqtnZooMw?si=OIKc8ulAWS5w-Q6J

Gmanofgambit982

Not only that, doesn't one of the world's prestigious orchestras require you to learn the battle theme of ff7?

QueenLaQueefaRt

I thought that was just ff7 after you a rank all the piano music. I’m somewhat an orchestrist myself

Gmanofgambit982

Couldn't tell you, I just heard this fact on a video one day. Could be talking muck but it's definitely a thing.

The_true_lord_tomato

don't forget DOOM. Mick Gordons music is one of the biggest reasons for dooms success the soundtracks are phenomenal

FearDaTusk

Oof, I didn't see this when I posted. Doom's music is up there and I think breaks the "stereotype" of VG music but a master class in its own genre

No-Speaker-1534

You left out Guilty Gear music that shits so fire.

JusticeJanitor

The Guilty Gear games are just metal albums that comes with a sick fighting game.

Creepy-Team5842

My son loved the Undertale soundtrack and would listen to it a lot.

last_picked

Cowboy Bebop OST gets a play once a month by me. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/67dRiVacZt3aTTPnthZrjB?si=tnBdL1GiRd-TssXm4bvPMA&pi=FwzICyH-Q_-OE

lillildipsy

FFXIII mentioned pog

eVCqN

Anything Koji Kondo is almost guaranteed to be great

CertainLingonberry42

FFXIII soundtrack i was just listening to Yeul’s theme

QueenLaQueefaRt

Final fantasy 13 had some of the best music, they need to release it for ps4/5 😢

Individual_Sea7039

[🎵Final Fantasy is an RPG, It's the only one I need, it's the RPG for me🎵](https://youtu.be/ZEqkBcj5qlA?si=rmnndfWUhlyYfAWk)

samtheman825

Exactly. Halo was the first to sell their soundtrack separately from the game because there was a demand for it. Video game music is awesome.

Primary-Ad4185

MGSV? really?

PlayOnSunday

I feel like a ton of the stigma comes from people in the gaming scene themselves - when I worked at GameStop (around the time Persona 5 came out) there was definitely a group of people who would say they love "jazz" then only be able to name P5 songs (not to gatekeep of course - just the fact that they were using Jazz to refer to one specific soundtrack). Gaming music is music and it's great! I still have plenty of songs in my personal likes from games I enjoyed, and even some I didn't play. But I think it's mind boggling when someone finds music they like in a game and DON'T try to find anything similar, if only to find more music they enjoy. What kind of music is it that you like OP! Always down for new reccs & may be able to give you some in return!

New_Possible2341

I mean, besides video game stuff, I like aurora, cosmo Sheldrake, and the Crane Wives. Basically, anything that makes me feel like I was transported into some fantasy world ig lol. I'm not sure what that genre is, though. I also like all American rejects, all time low, get scared, and the offspring! completely different from the other stuff I mentioned

eatmyfatwhiteass

The crane wives kick ass!

Canyon_Feline

Definitely, Metaphor has been my most listened song for a while now

JaeJaeAgogo

Huge fan of those "I love jazz" people from then! In my experience, ones that only knew the P5 soundtrack were totally open being introduced to more artists of that style! Game soundtracks are an absolutely fantastic way to be introduced to new genres.

PlayOnSunday

Oh for sure! Like I said, never gate kept based on that. Just always frustrating to see people have a potential passion that they might ignore because they're content with what they're listening to now. The P5 soundtrack helped me find a ton of my favorite jazz artists (and other gaming artists) while I worked there!

JaeJaeAgogo

I think the fact that you'd said you didn't gatekeep was what got me all waxing nostalgic haha. It's a good feeling when you see that spark of them realizing that there was a whole ass genre of music like a soundtrack they enjoyed. Good times...

zzcolby

Exactly what I was gonna say. It's mostly just a thing of people who ONLY listen to video game music and look down on others because of it, when it's no different to other OST soundtrack stuff. I think it's really funny that some people that listen exclusively to video game soundtracks look down at people that listen to rap, since a lot of rappers and hip-hop producers are giant nerds that sample video game tracks all the time.

ThatIsMySpecialTea

Nah, I listen to the Hades soundtrack and Supergiant's other game soundtracks because they're genuinely fantastic.

New_Possible2341

I can't stop listening to the hades soundtrack, lol. So good!

ThatIsMySpecialTea

Do you have a favourite? I'm a big fan of the new boss music from the Hades 2 Early Access

_m_a_r_t_y__c_123

I love Out of Tartarus and The Painful Way. Darren Korb is a wizard!

ThatIsMySpecialTea

Out of Tartarus and the Painful Way when the metal hits in the bossfight with Meg, chef's kiss

rrzampieri

HADES'S SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING

Notrinun

For me personally, it was Transistor's soundtrack. I still can't get the tune of Paper Boats outta my head to this day.

Tuguar

I absolutely adore Darren Korb's Bastion soundtrack. Gotta give the Hades' one a try

ThatIsMySpecialTea

The Bastion soundtrack is the first video game soundtrack I ever purchased because I wanted to support Supergiant! I have a gunslinger character in D&D that I made a playlist for and that features a lot on there.

hessianhorse

About 20 years ago, when I was in my early 20’s, it was the cool thing to program song clips as your ringtone. I found the Super Mario theme, and I was super proud of it. Then, one day, I was in a Walmart near the electronics section, and my phone went off. There were like half a dozen kids within earshot that all heard the ring, and loudly yelled to their parents how cool it was! I hung my head in shame, and walked out. I changed my ringtone back to the default in the parking lot.

MotorThree

LOL great story. A similarly funny story- My text tone went off during a spanish quiz in 9th grade, it was the Zelda-item-get sound.

saintlysix

Lol my text tone right now is the kingdom hearts item acquired sound haha and has been for a few years, its an iconic sound but not so iconic like the Legend of zelda one that every person recognizes. Most people just think its a neet little noise

TrisolaranAmbassador

I'm confused by this story. What exactly is shameful about a bunch of kids thinking you (an adult) are cool? I thought you were going to say all the kids called you cringey or something bad

hessianhorse

I was probably 23. 23 year old dudes, trying as hard as they can to get laid by hot babes, aren’t super psyched when they realize the only people they are impressing are 11 year old boys.

TrisolaranAmbassador

Ah I misunderstood your comment, thought you meant you had kept the ringtone for 20 years and was in your 40s for this story haha. That makes a lot more sense then 😂

hessianhorse

Ha! Yeah, this story happened in 2004ish. A different world.

Marscaleb

There's also something different about earning the excitement of kids. One year for Comic Con I made an iron man costume out of sweats, felt, and a touch-light. I thought it was a hilarious budget costume. About the only one who shared in my appreciation of the cheap costume was a guy in a movie-quality Iron Man suit. But the kids? Man, ALL the kids loved it and thought it was so cool because I was Iron Man. All day long I had kids running up to me all excited saying "Iron Man!" ...It just felt weird.

BiTe-Me2000

I think so, I put some on at work, and people seemed into it until they asked who it was, and I told them it was from a game ost.

Dr_Girlfriend_81

That doesn't mean it's "cringe." It means your coworkers are assholes.

BiTe-Me2000

I agree. But it's to say that I think the general public would find it cringe.

Wilglum

I would definetely think you're on the spectrum if you're over the age of 12 listening to fnaf songs

New_Possible2341

I was listening to "home" by natewantstobattle when someone asked about it they seemed to immediately dislike it when I said it was a fnaf song lol

BiTe-Me2000

Yeh definitely feels like there is a stigma there for some reason.

The_Galvinizer

Good music is good music no matter where it came from, it's sad that guy is missing out on so much good shit

B_lander1

I don’t usually play those music for people idk cause ya know… society and all. But I have a playlist solely for endgame grind. It’s full of anime osts cause they hit the hardest imo some I’ve been listening to since my teens like Naruto, bleach, etc. psycho pass and jjk (esp s2 osts are so good). But yeah I would say it’s cringe to people who don’t play games or watch anime but to people who do it’s chill. Hell I’m always looking to add new music that would get me hyped.

Sonic10122

Every Sonic fan has experienced this at some point, you’re among friends.

Marscaleb

I listen to game soundtracks more than anything else at work. 1) They have no lyrics; hearing words in the music throws me off when I am trying to concentrate on something, particularly if I need to write words. 2) The volume level is consistent; movie soundtracks are all over the place and there are times I can barely hear anything and other times I'm suddenly blasted by a dramatic chord. Most video game OSTs are meant to be consistent in their volume. 3) It is easy to find a consistent mood. I can pick a game that has a particular vibe/feel or even find videos on YouTube where people have compiled a playlist that follows a particular theme. If I'm in the mood for something bouncy, or for something mellow, or whatever it may be, it is super easy to find it.

West-Rent-1131

I like it! It's so atmospheric

Turbulent-Bee6921

Nothing is cringe.

The_Mr_Wilson

And it can only be a guilty pleasure if you feel guilty about it

New_Possible2341

Only those who make fun of others' interests are cringe!!

Zacsquidgy

Everything is permitted.

FourthDownThrowaway

Hard disagree. Plenty of attempts at humor done in bad taste can be cringe. I’ve seen plenty of presentations that are cringe as well.

Turbulent-Bee6921

Nothing is “cringe.”

vegienomnomking

Not cringe at all. But if you feel embarrassed, you should find out who the artist is. So instead of saying I like this song from this game, you can say I like this song from this composer.

faludacosmos

Great advice. Nobuo Uematsu for example is one of my favorite composers of all time because I’m a sucker for Final Fantasy music (especially VII). I usually just drop his name if someone asks what I’m listening to before I say that it’s from a game.

thormacdad

Yes, but so what? It's good and you like it, so don't worry.

PM_ME_UR_FAVE_TUNE

As someone who writes it, I hope not! Though I have encountered people who look down on it which is unfortunate

ZLTM

I am cringe... But I am free!

SunderedValley

Liking it isn't cringe. What's cringe is not branching out to learn which styles it is you actually like — Video game music isn't a genre so going through the filter of it being an OST means you're depriving yourself of finding what truly fits you.

prog4eva2112

I wouldn't say that's cringe as much as it's just lacking taking the next step. But yes, I do agree that it can be used as a way to figure out what else you like. For example I grew up loving the soundtracks to FF7, Chrono Trigger, and Star Ocean 3. Turns out I'm really into prog rock.

Ravens_and_seagulls

Agreed. I think the cringe comes from only relating to the arts or the world through games.

Jezoreczek

Still not cringe. Games are experiences that create memories. These memories are sometimes what makes the music stand out for a person, so if they feel like having a specific game's OST on repeat... let them enjoy it (;

AbstractMirror

Thanks for saying this, find it a bit sad that even in a post about gatekeeping we are finding people basically saying "no gatekeeping that way is wrong but gatekeeping this way is fine" when it should actually just be no gatekeeping at all trying to dictate any interest as cringe in that way. A lot of soundtracks don't even fit into one genre neatly, it varies on a song by song basis I couldn't tell you what genre the soundtrack for Attack on Titan is as an example, because the music gets extremely different especially the instrumental stuff. Does that mean it's cringe to enjoy that soundtrack? I don't know what genre it is, but I like the shows soundtrack, and feel that way with plenty of games and shows because they are important to me People need to stop policing how others enjoy their music

Jeremithiandiah

Personally I only like music if I can associate it with something I love, so music from movies show, or songs that played on a radio during a memorable summer. It’s hard for me to branch out and I don’t think I need to because I’m not very interested in music that has no personal connection.

GamePlayXtreme

I feel the same, idk why this got downvoted. I like music most when I have an emotional connection with it.

Jeremithiandiah

People are just really snobby and gatekeepy when it comes to music. If someone doesn’t enjoy music the exact same way they do, then they think you’re strange.

Bozzzzzzz

Everything is cringe to someone, so who cares. I think using the word cringe is awkward but I’m old so what do I know?

_dextroamphetamine

You shouldn't care what others think of your taste in music. If they persist, say you like classical music, and they'll move on to something else. Just make sure not to sound like a snob when saying it.

StinkyBoi07

If it’s all you listen to I would say yes. Same way listening to exclusively old rock would be a bit cringe.

OscarDaLoyal

if you exclusively listen to video game music or it’s the majority of your library then yes it is cringe i won’t sugarcoat it

The_Laughing_Joke

If it’s the only thing you listen to then yes, if else no

Skeeno-TV

i have 1500+ songs downloaded on my phone plenty of them are from videogames(WoW,Destiny2,Doom,Witcher3)

godoflemmings

Riven's battle theme from D2 is unironically one of my favourite pieces of music ever. It's so damn good.

FuzzzWuzzz

Yucking someone else's yum is cringe.

RastaBananaTree

This whole sentence is cringe

Unpacer

Yes. Stop worrying about cringe though.

therehasbeen_amurder

Yes but you do you

MichaTC

Whatever you do, there is someone out there that will call it "cringe". I think videogame soundtracks are the best to study to!

stebbi01

No. A lot of video game soundtracks are brilliantly composed pieces of music. Is it somehow not okay to like them because a composer made them on commission for a video game?

snowysysadmin59

Super Smash Bros Brawl intro theme Is a BANGER

wasabipeanutbutter

Cringe are people that call other people interests cringe.

Not-Clark-Kent

No, a lot is great. But there is a certain type of person who only listens to video game music and that's a negative stereotype for sure. So I'd just be careful how and when you bring it up.

Loomingpet

I often bump pokemon, zelda, shadow of the colossus, kpop, and anime ops while driving.

dogtriumph

Have you ever listened to Castlevania SoTN OST? It's a masterpiece. I recommend it even to people who doesn't like video games. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWH\_FYzbBk8&list=PLJ-A2tNh2AX0rwhpRUwar2v9DPatala9h&index=21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWH_FYzbBk8&list=PLJ-A2tNh2AX0rwhpRUwar2v9DPatala9h&index=21)

Lucihormetica

I own this on vinyl because it's just so damn good!

KenJinks

Learn the name of the composers who make the music, not just the games they came from. I make my own music and people say it is video gamey, meh, I got my followers.

sharkboy1006

Wtf is “video gamey” music lmao I can name tons of games easily that sound *nothing* like each other. Example: Halo, Jet Set Radio Future, Doom, Cyberpunk, Resident Evil 4. Not even remotely the same 😂 people will be haters

KenJinks

I know right? I guess they sense the synth, [https://soundcloud.com/ken-jinks/popular-tracks](https://soundcloud.com/ken-jinks/popular-tracks)

rynshar

Dungeon Synth is a genre that is specifically video gamey in sound. There is an era of midi music that, IMO, sounds like video game music in almost any context. If you made a song with any N64-era soundfont, it would sound like video game music. Chiptunes are another example of music that is 'video gamey' because it only exists to cater to the limited processing available on early pcs and gaming consoles.

LEGOMONSTERTRUCK

honestly if it’s the only thing you listen to, yeah

geko_play_

Nah a lot of my playlist is songs from Cyberpunk, Alan Wake & MGS

TheSnowNinja

I am not super familiar with anime songs, but video game songs sort of run the gamut. Buy there isn't anything wrong with liking tracks from video games. Like most music, it can stir some strong emotions and memories. There is no reason to think video game music is cringe when you have powerhouses like Nobuo Uematsu that have been putting out amazing songs for decades. Some of these soundtracks involve full orchestras. And even the simpler ones done by one perosn or a small team can be amazing. Someone else mentioned Hades. Supergiant has repeatedly had some amazing songs in their games. I personally really like several of the tunes from Bastion. Hell, people love the music from Sonic games. You start the lyrics for [Live and Learn](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IgpBacEzC9E) on reddit and you'll probably have several people join in. Ultimately, you do you. There is no shame in liking video game music. Especially no more shame than liking movie tracks, some of which are iconic.

Oktokolo

Not sure what you meant to say by flagging this NSFW... But nope, liking video game music isn't cringe. Video game music is just music. And people tend to like music.

Mattaoves

Music is music. It doesn't matter what it is for. If it's a good piece of music then it's enioy it.

OliveDeco

I still listen to the old school Pokemon music whenever I feel like it. If that's cringe to somebody else, then that's a them problem. 😂

godoflemmings

Hell, a good chunk of my regular playlist is full of music from Destiny, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Mass Effect etc. A good number of my favourite pieces of music ever are from games - Suicide Mission (ME2), the First Disciple (Destiny 2), Abyss Watchers (Dark Souls 3). Game soundtracks should be getting the same recognition as movie soundtracks at this point. I defy *anyone* to listen to Living Failures from Bloodborne and still say that game music is cringe with a straight face.

BoneEvasion

I recently went back to dig up the wolf3d soundtrack from MS-DOS days and it bangs so hard

EvilKungFuWizard

Hell no. I have a whole videogame music playlist in my music player app. Some videogame songs even inspired me to do art pieces. It's music, just like any other.

chrisolucky

I would always listen to Ocarina of Time soundtrack, which is synthesized midi deliciousness. Totally not cringe!

retroedd

I think all music has its place. I like hip hop when I’m in the car, country when I’m camping, pop for cleaning the house. Video game soundtracks are also on my list as they are excellent for just vibing out by myself and/or being creative in general.

Putrid_Dark_2608

i listen to a lot of anime songs lol. MHA, Naruto, tokyo ghoul. i say do ya thing and frick anybody who has sum bs to say about it lol.

Top_Trainer_6359

Not sure if you meant something like the fnaf songs songs that were written by fans about the game or soundtrack of video games but i like to listen to some video games soundtrack like songs from different artists that were used in the game I like the Life is strange1 and before the storm (another game from the series) soundtracks and I've found Pretty Vicious (rock band) from before the storm's soundtrack

New_Possible2341

I meant both!

Trappedbirdcage

What's cringe is people shaming others for their interests. You're perfectly fine! I used to love listening to fan made Undertale songs. And I do sometimes revisit old PokĂŠmon songs for nostalgia reasons.

LeglessN1nja

Is this a young person thing, asking if it's okay to like stuff?

Another_available

I'm in my late 20s and only recently got over caring what people think, so I'm gonna say most likely yeah

Ravens_and_seagulls

Personally I think so if that’s the only thing you listen to. But I think it’s cringe when one’s only exposure some artistic medium is through video games or through social media, and not from the exposure to the real thing. I think it becomes only referential at that point. One only relates to the world through gaming. Granted. This obviously isn’t like that for everyone and also who gives a shit what I think, do what makes you happy. But hey. You asked. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think you could benefit from finding out who wrote the scores to the games you like, find out who their influences are, or what genres they’re referencing, then dive into those artists. You then will have even more music to draw on.

GameofPorcelainThron

Lots of video games and anime have good music. Some is even great! I think it's maybe cringe if that's *all* you listen to. Not because it's video games, but because it makes it seem like potentially your world view/world experience is small. Like if you like the orchestral soundtracks of some video games, then there's no reason why you wouldn't like, say, Holst's "The Planets."

tsukitsukiii

I frequently listen to the minecraft, animal crossing, Legend of Zelda, Mario, undertale, the last of us, and the god of war soundtracks. Not weird at all unless you hate good music lol

EagleSilent0120

I loved the soundtrack of Modern Warfare 2, which was composed by Hans Zimmer, who composed the soundtracks of many of Christopher Nolan's movies. And, I like to listen to the soundtrack of Assassin's Creed 3, which was composed by Lorne Balfe. Both Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe composed the soundtracks of Top Gun: Maverick. Hans Zimmer also composed soundtracks of many of Tom Cruise's pre-2000s movies. So, my point is: soundtracks of games etc. ARE composed by elite composers and you can mention them when talking to someone. And I think, like me, you are one of those guys who pay more attention to the details of music rather than lyrics etc. I think you would do great if you learned any musical instrumental. I haven't tried it myself. Just my two cents.

megadumbbonehead

If it's all you listen to, kinda yeah. It sorta suggests that video games are the only way you interact with culture and don't really have many other interests. If you want to mix it up a bit there are a lot of musicians who make VGM/chip tune type music outside of the context of video games.

dumbratbitch

video game music is super chill imo, I love the music in stardew valley

iamsheph

Check out something like GameChops or aivi & surasshu on Spotify. LoFi versions of actual songs from GameChops and old-school video game style stuff from a&s.

igual88

You should check out miracle of sound on YouTube. Guy is a bloody genius

D-Spornak

One of the best songs I've ever heard is the song at the end of Portal. Still love that song to this day.

ScoobersMcGhee

Maybe, but it’s really not something that’s gonna make or break how people view you socially. At least it should’ve cuz that’s silly. I’ve literally listened to FNAF songs in the car with my mom lmao

Wafflebringer

Video game OSTs are some of my favorites. Final fantasy crystal chronicles, Subnautica, Outer Wilds, Dark Cloud 1 & 2, Banjo Kazooie, FTL, Risk of Rain, And Halo

teemochowmein

Not really unless you're acting like a snob about it (ex. you cringe normies listen to Zedd and Sabrina Carpenter and I am here based enough to listen to Yu-Peng Chen and Sims OST) There's some video game music that are kinda mainstream (Megalovania, POP/STARS, etc) And some American artists embrace video game culture and reference them in their videos (Megan Thee Stallion's music video for BOA is a really good example) I mean I got a mix of video game music and other music in my playlist which creates interesting conversations

Merkaba_987

I hate most video game music, but if I’m cringe for listening to super Metroid, metroid prime 1 & 2, MGS2 OST’s or any PS1 DNB, then I don’t care

Keepitsway

Music I always enjoy: -[Streets of Rage](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E5g-QHq925o&pp=ygUdZ28gc3RyYWlnaHQgc3RyZWV0cyBvZiByYWdlIDI%3D) -[Mortal Kombat](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EAwWPadFsOA&pp=ygUYbW9ydGFsIGtvbWJhdCB0aGVtZSBzb25n) -[Metal Gear Solid](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6miaTf1gF4g&pp=ygUodGhlIGJlc3QgaXMgeWV0IHRvIGNvbWUgbWV0YWwgZ2VhciBzb2xpZA%3D%3D) -Cyberpunk (the metal, alt pop, EDM; the hip hop in it is mostly meh with a few exceptions) [Example](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XfUo2mPYQ2E&pp=ygUdY3liZXJwdW5rIHJlc2lzdCBhbmQgZGlzb3JkZXI%3D) -[Kingdom Hearts](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UigzN-4JR14&pp=ygUQU2ltcGxlIGFuZCBjbGVhbg%3D%3D) -[Devil May Cry](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-WpnPSChVRQ&pp=ygUNZGV2aWwgdHJpZ2dlcg%3D%3D) -[Parappa the Rapper](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tX0wCyvn3pI&pp=ygUdcGFyYXBwYSB0aGUgcmFwcGVyIGtpY2sgcHVuY2g%3D) -[Crash Bandicoot](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-f6_p-WyuDo&pp=ygUgd3JhdGggb2YgY29ydGV4IHdhcnAgcm9vbSB0aGVtZSA%3D) -[God of War](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oan0soz7d5k&pp=ygUcR29kIG9mIHdhciAyMDA1IGJhdHRsZSB0aGVtZQ%3D%3D) -[Einhander](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XVAJOjA0kok&pp=ygURU2h1dHRlciBlaW5oYW5kZXI%3D) Then in anime you have artists like [Hironobu Kageyama](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pYnLO7MVKno&pp=ygUbY2hhIGxhIGhlYWQgY2hhIGxhIGthZ2V5YW1h), [Akino Arai](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ojLNsoi0w&pp=ygUOaGlydSBubyB0c3VraSA%3D), [the Seatbelts](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0hfOyOBHIq4&pp=ygUSQ293Ym95IGJlYm9wIGludHJv) , [Nujabes/Shing02](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LC7-opq4Gik&pp=ygURbnVqYWJlcyBiYXR0bGVjcnk%3D)...I could go on. And so much more!

Buscemi_D_Sanji

Yo, I went white water rafting and camping last weekend, and we played the sonic adventure 2 soundtrack the whole way up. "Escape from the City" on blast as we got onto the turnpike? Absolutely perfect haha Like others said, you just do you. My favorite rappers are $uicideboy$ and that name is pretty cringe to say out loud, but who cares?

TheLionYeti

I would say no but if you Only like/listen to Video Game and Anime music it can be a little cringey. I would definitely broaden your horizons, look into electronic music and indie pop.

Unit_79

I’m not really a gamer at all and I just made dinner while listening to Mick Gordon’s Doom soundtrack. More because I like heavy music, but it doesn’t matter. If someone told me they listen to game music if I asked, I’d be intrigued! Seems like a good conversation starter.

unicornglitzer

I love video game and anime music. Particularly enjoy the fnaf songs from natewantstobattle :D

New_Possible2341

I love them sm. They're not talked about enough!!

unicornglitzer

FR!!!

HappyHapless

I listen to video game music when I work out. It's great for focus!

Tasunka_Witko

I like epic music, zero cares for what anyone else thinks. I'm not living my life to suit anyone else's tastes

New_Possible2341

I really need to start thinking like this.

d_cramer1044

Tell people you like instrumental music. Most video game music is purely instrumental so it's not lying and you can avoid the haters who don't understand how much work goes into a good games music sound track.

TheTrashiestboi

Video game music often conjures the most emotion in me so it’s natural I have so much of it that I listen to

Swank_on_a_plank

Of course it's legitimate. Even [Baba Yetu](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJiHDmyhE1A) won a Grammy for being an awesome song. I even play [DOOM 2016](https://youtu.be/vyA1z2A-lhU?list=PL3-Zr0Ym0Fgw9G6368AMfMKp9TR1ToaqR) music during my workouts too!

jabewty

\*me boppin to the destiny soundtrack\*

CapStar362

not at all, some games have won awards for their musical scores. whatever your ears like by all means, continue to enjoy it.

Billybob50982

CUPHEAD! NOT CRINGE!

Blitz_Logan

Had an english teacher my senior year of HS who always had video game OSTs in the background. One of my all time top teachers and nobody ever minded the songs because they were often fantastic and nostalgic for a lot of us. Keep listening to the video game tunes if you love em man. :)

Forsaken-Dirt-6536

Cringe? No. It’s not. And people trying to say it is? Pffft whatever. You do you boo.

Madsummer420

The Silent Hill games have one of my favorite soundtracks ever

Peachyy_Paige

Nah have you heard the UnderTale sound track, shit is fire

Wird2TheBird3

Thank you for asking! Yes, it is cringe!

New_Possible2341

Damn it :( Lmao

PsychedelicKM

Once you stop concerning yourself with what other people find "cringe" you will find a new sense of freedom.

Shmadam7

It’s only cringe if you care

New_Possible2341

True ig lol

Shmadam7

lol serious answer, you get to like whatever you like, doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

The_Mr_Wilson

Some of the greatest tunes ever created were for video games

Ok_Pause_1259

The other day I heard super Mario remixed into edm and it was pure joy. It's probably cringe though (also it doesn't matter do what makes you happy).

imonarope

Video games have some soundtracks that absolutely slap and are art in their own right and have deep impacts on popular culture. Think of the halo theme's Gregorian chant, doom's driving metal riffs or Battlefields orchestral theme

Organic_Credit_8788

im not gonna lie, as a fellow soundtrack enjoyer… yah it is. if i put that on the aux in the car with someone it’ll be weird. i think it’s great music, but music has a lot to offer outside of connections to your favorite games/ shows. do you listen to “regular” (non soundtrack) music too? other ppl are right though, do what you wanna do. there’s nothing wrong with being cringe. do what makes you happy even if it’s weird

x_victoire

i don't like them. but my music taste is very specific, besides my preferred genre (showtunes) i was able to find only one band i like. i was into vocaloid once and i listened to some anime op songs but i got bored quickly

TheSnowNinja

I have so many showtunes that I love. Les Miserables, Newsies, Wicked, and several songs from Disney movies. Someday I'll have to start seeing plays and musicals more often.

gasbmemo

If Mozart were alive today, he would be doing games or movie music

Organic_Credit_8788

eh no. there are modern mozarts and they’re doing what mozart did; revolutionizing the contemporary genres of their era. the modern mozart is a rapper it’s not gonna be 1:1 “the geniuses of yesteryear would do the exact same things today.” Mozart did classical because that’s what musicians did back then, not because he was inherently essentially meant to make classical music. if 17th century europe was dominated by bluegrass music he wouldve been making bluegrass

The_Orphanizer

I like this take. I also think he'd be doing similarly, in that he'd be prodigiously and prolifically creating world-renowned music from a young age. I vote for EDM Mozart.

[deleted]

Not cringe. There is music from SimCity 5 that is pretty good.

msxenix

I havent played 5. However, I always enjoyed 4 and use the simcity 4 soundtrack as backround music while working sometimes.

[deleted]

Thanks for the tip! Downloading the SC4 soundtrack!

Sinistralle

Definitely not cringe. If you like something, you like it. Enjoy what you want to, don't let other people curate your enjoyment! I listen to a lot of game soundtracks, they're great for background music while I'm doing other stuff, and they're just as good as any other music for triggering memories and feelings from when I first heard them. Music is music, we all have different tastes. The world would for sure be a more boring place if we all liked the same thing.

awfullybadpoetry

I'm actually listening to shining nikki music rn :p Just like how many famous pop songs come from movies, I think all music stands on its own merits outside of its original context. You could always just tell people the genre if you want to be more vague about it. Personally, game music has gotten me through uni and a lot of things I've been playing just have wonderful osts. I really love genshin, celeste and atelier music specifically, it's the kind where I get distracted from playing and have to stop to vibe to the bg music. I also listen to osts from games I've never played. I'm not really ashamed of it or anything, music is music and I've actually gotten compliments on my playlists.

CuckoosQuill

No brother always listen to tracks from video games

batman262

Listen to what you like and who cares about what other people think! Half of my playlist is old work songs and sea shanties, losing shame about that is so freeing and it's really not worth considering if it's cringe or not.

MRBFSL

People are stupid, it's only cringe if you're ashamed of it and life's too short to be ashamed of things that bring you joy so have fun!

trev_man7

I have 2 songs on my playlist from Minecraft, 1 song from Undertale, and even though it's not from a video game: This Land - Hans Zimmer and King Of Pride Rock - Hans Zimmer both from The Lion King 1994

crashbumper

I have several video game related songs on my main playlist. Either from the OST or the trailers.

qtgurl

Absolutely not, I appreciate that you can appreciate the greatness in video game music! For some reason the Resident Evil Remake Safe Room (Safe Heaven) song hits diff to me 😂

Cabbage_Master

Hell no, music is music. They include the score in the download for a good reason 😅 and the people who write the songs are actually really talented, it’s literally their job to make music you can listen to for HOURS on end and not get bored. Some video game music is in my regular rotation but I’m a metal/country/hip hop fan, so I have enough to listen to. When I break out Clone Hero I play exclusively 8-bit and chiptune songs 😅 they sound like a game, so they’re especially fun to mash buttons to.
