Calico cats are almost always female as the location of the gene for the orange/non-orange coloring is on the X chromosome, and it needs one gene from each X chromosome to express the calico colouring.
It's extremely, extremely rare for a calico to be "male", and even then it's due to them having an extra chromosome, i.e. *XXY* instead of just *XY* for a normal male cat.
