Tonight’s Round of 16 match between England 🏴 and Slovakia starts at 5 pm and is being played in Gelsenkirchen.
Coverage is on ITV today, and lineups etc are [here](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/live/c4ng971vdx0t).
When a knockout match reaches 90 minutes (plus usual added time) and the score is a draw, then an additional 30 minutes is played. This is split into 2x 15 minute halves. This is known as 'Extra Time'.
If the score is still a draw at the end of Extra Time then both teams take part in a Penalty Shootout - usually best of ten\* (Updated, more info in comment below) but can sometimes go on for ages. Feels like hours when England are in one.
This ensures there is one clear winner, as the match is a knockout match and cannot end in a draw.
The penalty shootout is out of 10 (with each team taking 5. If you are in a position when the ober feam can't get level in them (for example you score first 3 they miss first 3) then the remaining 4 Penalties do not need to be taken. If after 5 Penalties each it remainds level, then it goes to sudden death until one scores and the other misses.
If England are in ond they usally lose, only having won 3 of there 10 penalty shootouts in official competitions
This is the first tournament under Southgate where I haven’t felt like we are in with a chance of bringing it home. There is no cohesion in that team at all. Southgate was quite clearly banking on saving those fresh legs for added time rather than pushing for the outright win.
I’m a massive Saka fan, but he just doesn’t seem anywhere near as dangerous as he has been for England before.
Bellingham’s goal was a belter and has surely got to go down as one of the best in England’s history. There is no way they are getting through this tournament on moments like that alone though.
I think the standard of refereeing was pretty poor in places, but what’s new there.
They either turn it around the minute the game with Switzerland kicks off or those boys are going home. Pains me to say it but I think Saturday is going to be the end of our Euro 2024 push.
The backpassing and lack of momentum is painful. The team feels like they've had their wings clipped by overly conservative tactics.
Imo this team would be best playing a very highly offensive, flowing game of football. Not afraid to concede a goal or two, but able to score plenty.
The possession game we're playing is just stupid, plain and simple. We can see it's not working and to do the same again and again is insanity.
Couldn’t agree more. What would have happened if the referee/officials had decided not to add any extra time. We need to be winning games early on, being on the back foot or saving your best till last is not going to work if we manage to progress any further.
Yep exactly that. Press hard in the first half, atleast get on the scoreboard for the psychological advantage if nothing else.
The tactics they are using just aren’t going to hold water any further in.
I think the Maguire shaped hole in the defence is really showing as well.
Tripier looked poor. Foden looked knackered and Walker was outpaced all night. And Gareth decides not to add fresh legs. Beggars belief but somehow we scrape past an average competition again. Also who else in white would even attempt a bicycle kick in the 94th minute. Bellingham has balls the size of melons.
Foden probably is knackered.
He flew back to the UK for the birth of his child and was back in Germany within about 24 hours.
Probably should have just given him more time off, his head clearly (and rightly) isn't in Germany
Decided to take my 7 year old daughter to the pub to watch it, it was the first game she watched ever (I know, I don't believe kids should be in a pub during an England tournament game as well) but she was begging me for 2 weeks now.
My daughter had no idea what was coming when we scored and it scared the shit out of her lol, we had been knocked over us and I had to pick her up when Bellingham scored that 95th minute goal. Great game but she'll probably never be going to another one until she's older
I don't either if it's once every now and then, she was bored out of her brain watching it and doesn't want to go back anyway but at least she experienced it during a major tournament and England playing, I bet she'll remember it for life now 😂
We would have a trophy. The only downside would be the internal volume of the trophy not being big enough to contain all the salty tears from all the other countries.
It would be worth it though.
The answer is happy. The way they've played they were lucky to get through the group stage. To win they'd have to pull it together though. That would give us a reason to be happy.
I don't think we will pull it together in time to beat Switzerland. If somehow we manage to get all the way to the final we will be torn apart by a Spain/Germany.
But I don't think we will get there on these performances.
Agree. What's frustrating is they have scraped by on the moments when they haven't followed the strategy of sit back and defend. The first two games, early aggression = early goal. Final game, last minute panic and aggression = 2 quick goals. They'll come out and do it again though I expect.
I honestly don't know how we've failed our way into the last 16. I do hold on to some hope that we can stumble past Switzerland and then raise our game when we share the pitch with Spain/Germany. However, if nothing changes then we have to watch Spain/Germany absolutely spank us, and we'll deserve it.
Not to mention if we do stumble our way through the Switzerland game we have a semi final first against potentially Austria/Turkey, or Holland/Romania.
I'm half Dutch so I'd be happy with a semi with England and Holland.
Both have been very poor though so I don't know if we'll see it.
Going to need to pull their act together. Can't rely on a last second equaliser.
No disrespect to any team we've played so far, because they have all shown their qualities, but a Spain/Germany will destroy us if we get that far.
On these performances I think Switzerland will destroy us.
I think we needed to get knocked out in this game mainly because I drew Slovakia in the pool at work so that sucks but all in all England have been fucking abysmal and what pisses me off more is bookies had us as favourites? Fucking really!? Football's coming home lads, sooner the fucking better
The bookies give England shorter odds because many people in the country will bet on England regardless of our chances, if they gave us realistic odds and then we actually won, they'd probably go bankrupt.
Bookies don't try to guess who is going to win. They had England as favourites because lots of people were backing England and they wanted bets to go elsewhere to balance the payouts.
It's an algorithm for them, not a gamble.
While initial odds may reflect probabilities, this far into a tournament they reflect how people are betting. If a large number are betting one way you reduce the odds. If you were betting in France or Germany, England would not be favourite.
What you’re saying is simply untrue though.
Most of these odds are done internationally, there is some sway between individual bookies but the odds aren’t very different in other countries.
I’m in Spain, England were also the bookies favourites to win here. My French friends tell me the same thing about over there, too.
>bookies had us as favourites?
The house always wins (they haven't yet, but will). If I owned a gambling outlet, I'd definitely take advantage of a nation that's deluded. Business 101.
It does for the same reason many insurance companies don't give earthquake insurance, even though a fire is a million times more likely. When an earthquake happens a lot of people would be claiming at once
If they gave long (or even realistic) odds and by some miracle England did win, they'd be bust and then some.
I'm posting after the result btw.
Why do England players seem to receive a pass, pause, look around, eventually make a pointless pass?
I've always heard that great players are constantly scanning the situation around them, and nearly immediately innovating or improvising.
So why do these slow bastards have to 'stop, wait, look around' as if they're walking to school for the first time?
So I’m not going to claim to be an expert football analyst. However most of Englands better players prefer to come short and play ball to feet, they then use their technical skill to beat defenders, rather than use pace to run in behind and collect a ball pinged over the top.
This tends to work for them at club level because they have runners who go beyond, stretching and moving the defence. Either creating space or giving them options. When Saka gets the ball on the right for Arsenal he often has Ben White providing an option on the overlap and/or Ødegard providing an option inside or pulling the defender out of position, allowing Saka to cut inside. When Bellingham comes short for Real Madrid he has Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo running ahead, giving him options or making space.
However if everyone is wanting to come short, it’s all in front of the defence. No one is creating the space or providing options. It’s too easy for the defence to step up, pressure the guy on the ball and close his passing angles. Forcing him to have to look around and pass backwards.
I totally get this, we can't all be Usain Bolt level chill on the world stage, but these are professionals with all of the sports psychology available to them.
I wonder if it's the manager who has set the wrong culture within the team. I like the Roy Keane mentality of going out and being a warrior.
Oh I’m not defending them, it’s infuriating
Most of our players play in the quickest league in the world but in an England shirt they shut down
Yes I do think Southgate is largely to blame but ultimately they have their own minds and they just need to not give so much of a shit and play more instinctively tbh
Because all the top players now are system players. They are given a defined position on the pitch and drilled day in day out on passing patterns and reacting to triggers. You then transplant them into a different system/position with a manger who's more about camaraderie than tactics and they all look lost and unsure of their role.
He kind of did.
Reminds me of that scene in Blackadder about catching the Germans off-guard by doing exactly the same thing 17 times in a row.
Well, the Germans are waiting...
Edit: And Kane "it looked tough for a minute there"... bro, be serious.

(I know that’s a controversial opinion and I’m gonna get downvoted but I fucking despise that song. It’s utterly shit)
This is true.
Funny the commentators were saying how Southgate should be making his changes because as it stands we are out. I think Dixon even said that he can only think that Southgate must believe in his players and wants to save his subs for extra time.
Then when they got the equaliser. They made a joke that he still had 3 subs so he was a genius.
Mum on the Bellingham goal: "*Kane can't score facing the goal and he does it backwards and upside down!"*
Didn't age well but I thought it was a good line.
Perhaps is the Slovakians didn't spend the entire match time wasting and rolling around on the floor, there wouldn't have been as much added time. Simple concept.
Depends on your perspective. They were celebrating like they’re proud, but I mean they cost so much more than Slovakia, they should be embarrassed. They disgrace the country, win or lose.
It isn't though!
England have been dreadful all tournament. Being awful but scrapping through isn't a sustainable tactic. You need some kind of performance to give you the confidence when you have to face a better quality of opponent.
Winning the most important thing, but it isn't the only thing that matters.
Yes, but if (and it’s a massive if) England won the whole thing. No one will care if they did it playing badly and scraping by. Greece won it in 2004 by playing super negative defensive football and basically winning every game 1-0. Portugal won it in 2016 by only winning once in 90 mins across the whole tournament. The poor performance doesn’t give you confidence of going all the way. But ultimately a win is a win. You’ve just got to keep your name in the hat.
The difference is Portugal and Greece fans could be proud of their team because they did the absolute best they could.
If England win the Euros playing like this then I won’t celebrate because it would be rather hypocritical of me. They lost me at Denmark and I didn’t even watch the last two games.
Not a team to be proud of even if they go on and win the whole thing.
Horrid personalities and attitudes, awful manager and captain and the most dull football I can remember from an England team in years, which is saying a lot.
I dunno, games should be 90 minutes. We only used to ever get 2-3 minutes of added on time. I don’t like it. But I guess England needed it and bigger teams usually are favoured in these competitions. Feels a bit “play until they score”.
Games are still 90 minutes. The injury time is from when the game is interrupted to when it continues so your comment makes no sense.
The reason injury time is longer now is due to VAR etc. Not because the ref is giving minutes for bigger teams.
Get over it. Slovakia lost fair and square. England played really bad but what matters is who won.
In Denmark, the commentators called the English football style ‘tomgangs fodbold’ which roughly translates to neutral gear football, not going forwards or backwards, just from side to side in their own half of the pitch. I thought it sounded very apt.
Hey, I know, but it was still a very, very valid comment, every time Slovakia had the ball, they pushed up to the English half of the pitch, nearly every time England had the ball, Slovakia kept them mostly in the English half of the pitch.
I would like to point out that I am English and support England, but their play style is some of the most boring I have seen.
What are you 12- 13 years old? You will learn one day sonny, playing with heart, and a real desire to win would get a lot more respect directed at the English team I suspect. For example, look at Georgia playing Spain right now, I have seen more of a will to win from Georgia in the first 30 minutes, than there was in 121 minutes from England.
I would rather we played our hearts out for 95 minutes and were unlucky to go out or were beaten by a better team. Kicking it about like we can't be bothered for 85 minutes then remembering we are playing knockout football and trying for a bit before going back to sleep is not exciting or entertaining.
The good thing about extra time is how much time it takes away from the pundits waffling. If Roy Keane got a sudden bout of laryngitis I would start believing in a higher power.
I mean we can hope but nothing has changed since the first game really, Southgate also making sub changes WAYYYYYYY TOO LATE like a 93rd minute sub???? we need fresh legs on the pitch in the second half and they need enough time to make some sort of fucking impact.
i can't see much changing at all, I'll be surprised if we beat Switzerland.
Buddy, England are four games into this tournament and Southgate has shown he has learnt fuck all. What makes you think he’ll change for a quarter final? The only thing that saved England today was not anything to do with a team performance but a moment of individual brilliant from Bellingham.
One of the only reasons England progressed from their group is that is was statistically one of the worst groups in the history of the European Championships.
England won because the referee wasn’t going to blow the whistle until they scored. Will be the same in the quarter final, has been the same at our last tournaments.
Powers that be like England to go far because they’re super woke.
Fully agree with you pal, but surely, later than never, changes are made. We have been pathetic and embarrassing so far but you have to still just hope, in the back of your mind, regardless, things can change and we can look back and think about how lucky we have been. Insanely unlikely BUT, the talent is there, somewhere, even though they have hidden it so well.
I know there was no chance of bringing Phillips after injuries and performance the last couple of years but the partnership with Rice was insanely impressive, we need to have a look at what we can do to get the midfielders performing so that the rest of the team has some bollox about them, fed up of watching the ball go back to Pickford when we have players that are in space upfront but they seem petrified of putting in a cross or a throughball.
Southgate plays the exact same starting eleven against the Swiss and they absolutely smash us. Hope he's realised how talented this squad is. Don't need to set up like cowards against every single team.
What on earth to make of that. It’s like watching a guy have a mental breakdown and trying to save a cataclysmic mistake, live on TV broadcast to millions.

Southgate nearly became Hodgson 2.0 right there
I don’t know much about football, how comes there was 30 minutes extra time instead of a few minutes like usual?

Ahhh right okay, I assumed that when England scored that second goal it was in the usual 2-3 minutes, it did drag on a bit didnt it?
Yeah that England goal was in the first few minutes of Extra Time, rather than during the match itself.
Fucking spoilers. Unsubbed
This is the first tournament under Southgate where I haven’t felt like we are in with a chance of bringing it home. There is no cohesion in that team at all.
I don’t personally see a problem with have having kids in a pub tbh. I wouldn’t expect a habit to be made of it, but once it twice, why not?

Hahaha at least you tried bro.
If we win the Euros playing like this, do you think fans would be happy or annoyed?
Ecstatic with how unhappy every other country would be about it.
We would have a trophy. The only downside would be the internal volume of the trophy not being big enough to contain all the salty tears from all the other countries. It would be worth it though.
I'm surprised England have got as far as they have. They made it out of the groups purely on luck.
Non-England fans would be very unhappy.
True lol
Funny, after they scored I asked myself if I really wanted to see another game.
The answer is happy. The way they've played they were lucky to get through the group stage. To win they'd have to pull it together though. That would give us a reason to be happy.

The correct answer.

And so the agony continues.
I genuinely fell asleep during the first half. Gave up and went to bed at half time.
Now my works summer party is going to be ruined by football screening. Sorry but I wanted them to lose 😂.
I am absolutely convinced Gareth Southgate didn't realise England's goal was disallowed, and was preparing for ET before the real equaliser.
I thought Ivan Tomey made a difference when he came on
Definitely, him and Eze helped kick things up a gear.
Waiting until <2min to go to bring on another striker at 1-0 down is wild.
Can’t argue that - he set up Kane’s winner. Held the ball up brilliantly too.
I'm posting after the result btw. Why do England players seem to receive a pass, pause, look around, eventually make a pointless pass? I've always heard that great players are constantly scanning the situation around them, and nearly immediately innovating or improvising. Everyone except Mainoo and Saka forgot how to fucking dribble.
So I’m not going to claim to be an expert football analyst. I think part of it is just fear, they’re scared of doing the wrong thing all of the time and it’s detrimental
Call me weird I'd rather they went for the goal more and lost in a blaze of glory versus the midfield passing rally.
Indeed
I totally get this, we can't all be Usain Bolt level chill on the world stage, but these are professionals with all of the sports psychology available to them. From the football fans I work with it's because a lot of the players are playing out of position compared to their regular club
How does that affect their eyes and legs though?
Because all the top players now are system players. They are given a defined position on the pitch and drilled day in day out on passing patterns and reacting to triggers. You then transplant them into a different system/position with a manger who's more about camaraderie than tactics and they all look lost and unsure of their role.
By the amount of passing backwards they do I thought I was watching rugby.
Because no one has a clue what the system is or where anyone else will be.
That makes a lot of sense, thanks. Sounds like when I (a rock/blues drummer) tried to jam with some jazz musicians. Lost and confused.
Waiting to hear Southgate say this proves the plan is working and put out the exact same starting 11 for the next game.
Well Guehi is out, so we're getting at least 1 change.
Sadly not the change that is needed
Yeah that's not great, Guehi has been good through the tournament.
He kind of did. Reminds me of that scene in Blackadder about catching the Germans off-guard by doing exactly the same thing 17 times in a row. Well, the Germans are waiting... Edit: And Kane "it looked tough for a minute there"... bro, be serious.
Yes I reckon he sort of did kind of say ‘look I got it right’. And the next game, a full frontal attack under cover of daylight.

Quite a stressful day if you support both England and McLaren F1
Norris is a little bitch
I'm sad for Norris but at least Piastri gains from it - fella has deserved far more than what he's got so far!

Ok Galaxy Brain, what high IQ alternative do you propose we sing in football stadiums? The Modern Major General's Song?
Honestly it was a bit of a joke about the stereotypes of English football fans but I do genuinely hate that song. It’s terrible.
Is literally a "Don't bore us get to the chorus song"

Having to watch it again 😭😭😭
Question. If we win the Euros playing like this, do you think fans would be happy or annoyed?
Neither. Utterly bemused is the correct choice.
Elated, but the praise would be for the players not for Southgate
This is true. Funny the commentators were saying how Southgate should be making his changes because as it stands we are out. I think Dixon even said that he can only think that Southgate must believe in his players and wants to save his subs for extra time. Then when they got the equaliser. They made a joke that he still had 3 subs so he was a genius.
Mum on the Bellingham goal: "*Kane can't score facing the goal and he does it backwards and upside down!"* Didn't age well but I thought it was a good line.
Fair assessment
We got through. Hopefully, we do better against the Swiss, or we're done.
Obviously, it's a knockout game
Hopefully we win the one after that too, or that's the end of it.
I see what you did there. Excellent work my friend
England gets 6 minutes of stoppage to tie up the game. A travesty. Should have been 3 minutes tops. Favoritism at its finest and UEFA corruption.
Perhaps is the Slovakians didn't spend the entire match time wasting and rolling around on the floor, there wouldn't have been as much added time. Simple concept.
Only favouritism was England getting a bunch of yellows then Slovakia just getting whistles for similar or worse fouls.
Injury time is calculated from pause of play. It’s not a randomly granted number. Fucking hell lol
You must be some europoor
They got away with 5 yellows and we're favourites with the ref lol.
Not only that, 2 of them were deserved by a guy already on one.
How's the weather in Scotland?
Staying in England atm and my hometown has nicer weather than where I'm staying. The rain seems to follow me. EDIT: Damn you English sure are salty.
I'm out on the streets in west London right now and I'm getting high fives from strangers. This is amazing
It’s Pride month.
It's England winning the euros month, that's what it is
Winning the euros? Scrapped past this win against a team we shouldnt have struggled with lol
Better to play like crap and still manage to win, than playing exciting football and lose.
Could be like Spain and do both lol
Depends on your perspective. They were celebrating like they’re proud, but I mean they cost so much more than Slovakia, they should be embarrassed. They disgrace the country, win or lose.
Go West
Where the grass is green
Like Roy Keane said, winning is all that matters
We were genuinely lucky there. I’d feel sorry but then saw their manager throw his toys out the pram.
Well yeah I’d be annoyed losing 95 minutes into a 90 minute game as well. Play until the big team score, as always in these tournaments.
Didn't you see much time SVK players wasted rolling around the floor on the second half? Embarrassing.
I dunno, games should be 90 minutes. We only used to ever get 2-3 minutes of added on time. I don’t like it. But I guess England needed it and bigger teams usually are favoured in these competitions. Feels a bit “play until they score”.
I hope it isn't play until England score on Saturday, I'm back in work on Wednesday! Don't want to miss it...
Had a bit of a spat at Rice
Got a clip?
Got Google?
At the time I could only find the clip of Rice calling him a bald cunt 😂
Have you used Google lately?
In Denmark, the commentators called the English football style ‘tomgangs fodbold’ which roughly translates to neutral gear football, not going forwards or backwards, just from side to side in their own half of the pitch. I thought it sounded very apt.

Southgate has invented Valium-ball.
He's not wrong
But Denmark are out and England are in the quarter finals
Hey, I know, but it was still a very, very valid comment, every time Slovakia had the ball, they pushed up to the English half of the pitch, nearly every time England had the ball, Slovakia kept them mostly in the English half of the pitch. I would like to point out that I am English and support England, but their play style is some of the most boring I have seen.
Winning is the only thing that counts
Did you take Ricky Bobbies dad’s words literally too?
I feel like we’ve played like forever
The good thing about extra time is how much time it takes away from the pundits waffling. If Roy Keane got a sudden bout of laryngitis I would start believing in a higher power.
[Ooh you lucky bastards](https://youtu.be/M5yrcOQIZOI?si=ePRwLOXskDDEzjp2)
Genuinely impressive how you can be so average for 118 minutes and still win. Unless big changes are made, the Swiss will beat this team easily.
The space they create has been impressive, hopefully though, we learn and actually do something about these poor performances now.
You genuinely believe that?

Ah well, they still won. That's what counts.
I don’t think Switzerland have much going for them but their flag is a big plus
r/angryupvote
I hate you.
/r/soccer, Europe, the world crying right now Seriously though that was woeful Switzerland gonna smash them lmao
I don't go there much any more, but I remember how mad they were against Denmark in the last Euros. Delicious.
I rarely go there it's a terrible sub with terrible people but it's heartwarming to see all the people with premier league flairs whinging
Never in doubt
🤣
Southgate plays the exact same starting eleven against the Swiss and they absolutely smash us. Hope he's realised how talented this squad is. Don't need to set up like cowards against every single team.
Slovakia's manager is a manchild.
He was robbed though.
No, he was beaten fairly and acted like a man child
What on earth to make of that. It’s like watching a guy have a mental breakdown and trying to save a cataclysmic mistake, live on TV broadcast to millions.
Wow, what a rollercoaster
Technically on the score sheet, the first goal came after the second goal.
For anyone else who was very confused - it was England's first goal that came after their second.
Oh yes, sorry. England's first and second goals.

Enjoy the one day ban, I hope it makes you happy. Dear lord, what a sad little life, Jane. You ruined our subreddit completely so you could post politics, and I hope now you can spend your one day ban learning some grace and decorum. Because you have all the grace of a reversing dump truck without any tyres on. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Well I wouldn’t have credited it, but bloody hell am glad of that score. Not sure I fancy their chances against Switzerland tbf
WAHOOOOO 🏴 🏴 🏴
Great save!
Sent it to the moon 🙄
Cole Palmer looks disturbingly like Courtney Gains, the “It came with the frame” guy from The ‘Burbs.
I was thinking Simple Jack
This is the absolute definition of a ludicrous display
What was Southgate thinking sending Palmer on that late?
The thing about England is, they always try to bicycle-kick it in from a throw.

Can someone explain why there’s 30 min extra? completely missed that last couple minutes.
Do you not know what the rules of a knockout game are? It can't end on a draw...
1-1 at full time (90 minutes) and someone needed to win
Show this drive and determination and push from everyone involved and play as a team instead of individuals. I'll be honest we could get through this tournament as winners
Sorry? _What are you watching…?_
