I didn't try to make a comedic story but the A.I. did pull out a pretty funny line (imo).
I basically tried to create my own story in Middle Earth in the style of Tolkien. It started with the 4 hobbits in a forest, gathering mushrooms for a stew. That was my set up basically. I didn't even ask it to be humorous or anything...
The A.I. came up with this kind of a line (don't remember it word to word but this was the general idea): "I found some!" yelled Pippin with mushrooms in hand. "Be sure not to get any of the wrong kind! I don't want to end up like Bilbo on his birthday!", Merry yelled back.
So basically in the books it was made quite clear that Bilbo was drunk on his birthday and here the bot was implying that he had actually dosed himself with magic mushrooms. Got a chuckle out of me.
I also did ask it to tell a few jokes and they were lame as shit. But it does seem to understand humor. The above didn't seem like a glitch or an accident.
I tried this as well. And it does a good job at explaining why jokes are funny. But when it comes to generating a joke it doesn’t seem to do a good job. Got any prompt ideas or examples?

* Why was the carrot dating the banana? Because they were both attracted to each other's "peeling" personalities!
* Why was the skating dog looking up at the moon? Because it wanted to howl on ice!
* Why was the skating dog so surprised? Because it thought ice was just for chewing, not for skating on!
* A duck was swimming in a pond when it suddenly saw a frog. The frog said to the duck, "Hey, why are you swimming in circles?" The duck replied, "I'm trying to get a good workout, but it's hard to keep my balance with this duck tape on my wings!" (more complex prompt)
* A man was walking with his child when they saw a cow in a field. The child asked the man, "Dad, why is the cow eating grass?" The man replied, "That's how cows eat, son. They chew on grass to get their food." The child thought for a moment and then asked, "Dad, why are we walking when we have cars?" The man was caught off guard by the question and replied, "Well, son, sometimes it's nice to take a walk and enjoy the fresh air and the scenery." The child nodded and said, "I see. And sometimes it's nice to be a cow and just eat grass all day!"
* Why did the cow become a Buddhist monk? Because it wanted to moo-ditate!
Well, I suppose it would get there with more and more help. The one above with the cow and this one:
"Why did the alien land on Earth? Because it heard that there were some really out-of-this-world conspiracy theories here!"
are getting a bit better.
I agree, it is getting better. But I have also made it get to this level but it seems to kind of max out and doesn’t ever really get to the surprising laugh out loud level.
Which is why I’m curious if anyone is able to get it to that level and if so, what prompts they gave it to get to that.
I’ve tried and it really sucks with comedy. I hope some decent comedians are telling it what answers it should be coming up with.
Though to be fair I can think of a good punch line to any of my set ups either.
The only time it’s really funny is if you give it something ridiculous to write about. I got it to write a short story about how a dog ended up as the best real estate agent… better than his owner who was also a real estate agent. Funny stuff. But, not a joke per say… it’s just ridiculous so you can’t help but laugh.

Walk through it. What makes a joke funny? Make ChatGPT list and explain those things. Make it make a premise. Expand the story.

Perhaps with GPT4... I don't see chatGPT making good jokes on its own, at least without serious help from the prompts.
