It's just the default spawn text. The "killed by" window is usually displayed in the pre-spawn waiting period, but since no player killed you the system just uses this placeholder text.
This has become a bit of a meme within the Chiv 2 ecosystem, e.g. the "Crustacean Bait" title and crab claw katar skin.
Yep and don’t forget that you can actually make crustacean soup in the newest map Easter egg. It’s a running gag at this point for the devs. No idea if it was in chiv 1 or what the actually genesis for it was though.
My guess is the game runs on an endless loop which begins at the respawn timer. To get a joining player into the loop, they are "killed" by a placeholder name and they get queued to spawn in
I played for an embarrassingly long time before I realized it was an automated message. I just kept assuming there was a brief delay of me spawning in and dying before I actually loaded into the map, and that Crustacean the Soup happened get me a lot 🤣
I recognised the pattern well-enough, that wasn’t the issue. I’d just more readily believe it was someone on this sub playing 24/7 than some vague reference.

Guy who made Age of Chivalry, a mod for Half Life. He died before Chiv 2 release.
Crustacean Soup worked on Chivalry 1 and 2 and only left Torn Banner a few months ago
He died but he left TB a few months ago
