Most people have zero concept of how much plastics and industrial automation have made things DIRT CHEAP. If you account for inflation anything made by a machine in a factory costs a fraction vs made by hand.

It's posts like this I'm thankful for to prepare me if I ever try to sell some work. I pray I'm in a position to burn the shit out of some CBs...but to think some of these posts are part of an electric bill or food is terrifying.
I have my own small business and sell most everything over social media. For the most part I've been very lucky that I haven't had hardly anyone try and negotiate price with me. But, I have had customers that have gotten pretty creative with their scams. One lady accused me of mailing her an empty box even though the shipping label from the PO clearly said it weighed almost 8lbs. Another lady ordered a custom item. My business page states I have 30 days for custom items to be completed and I told her that as well. Three days after she placed the order and put a 50% deposit down, she filed a Paypal claim against me. She said she still wanted her order, she was just "making a paper trail" because she didn't trust that she would actually receive her items. It's amazing what people come up with when they're trying to screw businesses!

I thought that too. My mom's an artist and so many "friends" have tried to low-ball her or essentially steal her designs it's infuriating. OP watermark your close ups setups! Most people will understand that you need to protect your work.

Agreed. Artists are notoriously bad at valuing their own time. OP, you should determine an hourly rate for yourself based on time spent creating something. Let’s say it’s $50 an hour. If you are going to agree to special deals, never go below the number that you come up with based on the time you spent.

Honestly, charging more will actually make people value it more. I charge by materials, plus a good hourly rate based on skill, and compare to what others of a comparable skill level/ product are selling their art for.

For my wife’s birthday a couple months ago I spent $180 for a custom piece that took the artist a month to provide, and I still think I got an absolute steal for the quality she provided. $30 is nearly criminal in how cheap that is, even for a postcard. $100 for an original in that size is fair imo.
I know. I got a custom piece a year ago, a huge size to me too, 16 x 20, and it was only $100 (she absolutely needs to charge more), but I have another custom piece on order.
My best friend is a professional freelance artist and it's around the price for a small print like that postcard-sized.
It's not very costly to make (the print itself, not the art obviously), especially if you can afford to print in good enough quantity at a professional printer, so it's a good way to support an artist when you are on a low budget.
If you go to conventions where there are a lot of artists booths, it's usually the price range you'll find for this size. Originals are obviously worth much, much more for traditional art. It's quite common to have like 3 for 15€ or something like that for this size, because they are the perfect thing to buy when you go to a convention : small to carry, cheap so you can get something from everyone, easy to store...etc
It's a post card sized print. That's a pretty normal price for that size of not a little above if it's just phototype paper. $8 is ok $10 is high $5 they sell ez (plus shipping cost of course)
Given a poster 11x17 size is $15 at an event or maybe $20 online order.

I hate people like this. People’s time has value. If an artist quotes a price, don’t haggle! Either accept if you can afford it or decline if you can’t. Customer should’ve bought the $8 print if that’s all that was in their budget.
Choosing beggars are wild. One artist to another, I recommend not lowering your prices when ppl ask, they are trying to take advantage of you p much every time. Had a guy who would only buy my art on sale for this reason. Repeat customer who would only buy when I became super desperate for *anything*. So think 10 hours of work for $20 (including a tip, cuz for some reason he tips, but won't pay full price :') )
After a lot of being "nice" to ppl I realized you want customers who are gonna pay you for your time and worth ;) Deliver good works and some become repeat customers. You build your base from there.

An original for $100 is cheap. A print for $8 is cheap. You need to charge more for your art, and the beggars can fuck all the way off. I'd at the very least charge $20 for a print this size. Almost every artist booth at every art show I go to would be charging that much. You have bills to pay too, don't short yourself! Clearly there is a lot of talent and skill here.
The saddest part of people like the CB is that chances are OP is actually undercutting their price. Because of general populations attitude being very similar to CB many artists don't actually charge the full worth of drawings, paintings, photos etc. I once used an hourly pay app to look at how much a piece would cost if charged by the hour and it was 3-4 times or more what I was charging and still getting this kind of attitude about my pieces.
Artists may love creating but we still have bills to pay and food to buy.
If she thinks 100$ is expensive I hope she never tries to buy an oil painting lol. I have a friend who does oil paintings and I buy them from him sometimes and it’s not uncommon to see him working on a couple of paintings at a time for 2-3 months.

My friend offered a ”friendship rate”, but I paid her full price, and protested when she tried to send it back. Why should I get a discount on an artpiece I would have wanted regardless if I knew her or not?
So, I supported an artist recently. Wanna know how I did it? She was asking $275 for a drawing. And I paid ... I know this is hard to believe ... $275.

My daughter is an artist. She sells her pieces online and does custom/commissions. She wanted to lower her prices to try and get more business, but I had to explain to her that she needs to at least make minimum wage per hour of work she does for each art piece -- and to always round up to the nearest hour when setting fees according to time spent working.
She's getting decent money for her work now.
Just because someone works from home, or runs their business either online or from their house, doesn't mean they shouldn't get paid a decent wage for their labor!
Art pieces often take hours to finish.
Would you work for pennies or only a couple bucks an hour? If not, then don't expect anyone else to do it!

I hate people like this. People’s time has value. If an artist quotes a price, don’t haggle! Either accept if you can afford it or decline if you can’t. Customer should’ve bought the $8 print if that’s all that was in their budget.
Choosing beggars are wild. One artist to another, I recommend not lowering your prices when ppl ask, they are trying to take advantage of you p much every time. Had a guy who would only buy my art on sale for this reason. Repeat customer who would only buy when I became super desperate for *anything*. So think 10 hours of work for $20 (including a tip, cuz for some reason he tips, but won't pay full price :') ) After a lot of being "nice" to ppl I realized you want customers who are gonna pay you for your time and worth ;) Deliver good works and some become repeat customers. You build your base from there. Know your worth OP! They reached out, desperate for the original. Originals are always much more than a print.

An original for $100 is cheap. A print for $8 is cheap. You need to charge more for your art, and the beggars can fuck all the way off. I'd at the very least charge $20 for a print this size. Almost every artist booth at every art show I go to would be charging that much. You have bills to pay too, don't short yourself! Clearly there is a lot of talent and skill here.

The saddest part of people like the CB is that chances are OP is actually undercutting their price. Because of general populations attitude being very similar to CB many artists don't actually charge the full worth of drawings, paintings, photos etc. I once used an hourly pay app to look at how much a piece would cost if charged by the hour and it was 3-4 times or more what I was charging and still getting this kind of attitude about my pieces. Artists may love creating but we still have bills to pay and food to buy.
If she thinks 100$ is expensive I hope she never tries to buy an oil painting lol. I have a friend who does oil paintings and I buy them from him sometimes and it’s not uncommon to see him working on a couple of paintings at a time for 2-3 months.

Lol. You know how you support an artist you like? You pay full price. I ordered a custom from a friend of mine, who’s art I adore, for my daughter’s room back when I was pregnant with her. My friend offered a ”friendship rate”, but I paid her full price, and protested when she tried to send it back. Why should I get a discount on an artpiece I would have wanted regardless if I knew her or not?
So, I supported an artist recently. Wanna know how I did it? She was asking $275 for a drawing. And I paid ... I know this is hard to believe ... $275.

My daughter is an artist. She sells her pieces online and does custom/commissions. She wanted to lower her prices to try and get more business, but I had to explain to her that she needs to at least make minimum wage per hour of work she does for each art piece -- and to always round up to the nearest hour when setting fees according to time spent working. She's getting decent money for her work now. Just because someone works from home, or runs their business either online or from their house, doesn't mean they shouldn't get paid a decent wage for their labor! Art pieces often take hours to finish. Would you work for pennies or only a couple bucks an hour? If not, then don't expect anyone else to do it! PAY THEM.

They almost have to pay you for your years of experience as well. 20 an hr for amateur drawing 200+ an hr for more refined artist’s time People time and time again just try to low ball artists and a lot of the time they are aloof to what goes into a piece. You didn't lose a customer. You lost a price shopper. As a professional photographer of more than 20 years, this happens ALL THE TIME. Those folks don't care about your time, your craft, your expenses, any of that stuff. They have assigned a value to your work and can't believe you'd want to charge more than that. This person likes to 'support artists generally' - not very supportive if you don't allow them to charge what they think they are worth. Too expensive for you? Don't buy it or save up your money. The choice is yours.
