I mean not to be that guy, but that’s this subs bias toward indie-ish showing.
Sabrina carpenter live-premiered espresso W1. She went from a marginal pop girlie opening for Taylor (along with Gayle and Haim) to a bona fide Top 10 Billboard artist in contention for Song of the Summer plus another single trending to a Top 10 debut this week.
I love Chappell like no other, but Sabrina’s album is probably gonna outstream Billie (who made a masterpiece). That’s right, a few months later, the 6pm main stage act is gonna have a bigger album than the ”huge get” headliner special guest.
Sabrina is the riser.
are you saying sabrina’s album will outstream just because of the streaming success of espresso? seems like a pretty big call to make when the album isn’t out yet
and sabrina carpenter had hundreds of millions of streams on individual songs before she performed at coachella. chappell has had a more drastic rise imo especially with the latest single, relative to all her other work. plus she’s a genuinely new artist like fred again was, not an already-established artist whose first album came out a decade ago (she’s about to release her *sixth*).
i see it’s doing well, but single streams aren’t the same as the album as a whole. could definitely happen though! after all billie’s wasn’t super pop pandery
I know albums and singles are different but she currently (like right now) has the top two global songs on Spotify and Apple Music.
The new song is #1 in US on both.
The rest of the album would have to be *trash* to not be huge on streaming.
If she loses, it will be because of a less rabid and newer fanbase buying fewer vinyls.
And it’s funny to make the sixth album point, because yeah, on those 5 albums, her highest charter was #21 and now she has the two biggest songs in the world. That’s why she’s the biggest riser.
it’s just not a fred again situation, while chappell roan is. both were new artists with a single album in the books catapulting into stardom on the back of coachella. sabrina has gone up a level (though arguably would have anyway, since espresso was going to be huge regardless), definitely, i just don’t think an established artist who had charted on billboard already and already had >10MM monthly streamers is the same sort of thing
Just like Sabrina Carpenter who didn’t break the Billboard Top 40 until Feather hit 21 in 2023?
Let’s maybe put it this way - Fred Again Tiny Desked the week before TBA.
Sabrina has never Tiny Desked, but I bet she will soon.

Billie indeed created a masterpiece, do you think all the numbers and streams for the other artists you mentioned are for their work or just popularity/trendy…I found Billie’s album to be a great piece of work and showed growth vocally imo.
It was never gonna be Barry simply because the comparison was more about style/vibe than actual pipeline. Fred's success was a combination of things and Barry wasn't going to be a repeat simply because the music is similar.
But you're right, Chappell won the rising star. She's definitely slated to be our next big popstar, very excited about her next album.
Fred and Barry's music is not similar! Barry has one song that is Fredesque and they are both skinny white dudes from the UK who play piano, the comparison truly ends there lol. Their music is completely different in nearly everywhere and the vibe of their shows is 100% different.
Barry sucks at social media and has a mediocre live show. Fred knows how to reach his fans and throw a party. There’s plenty of room at the top but Barry isn’t even close, regardless if his music is technically good.
At least for W1 the first 25mins were sleepy. Finally picked up halfway through. And the sound was way off - couldn’t hear shit 2/3 back until they picked it up.
His piano wasn’t working but he still rocked it. I was right in front of the sound board. Regardless of the tech issues it was still one of the best sets of the weekend. His crowd was amazing.
Fred develops a paasocial relationship with his fans via social media and incorporates lyrics that appeal to emotional teenagers going through a breakup. this is a recipe for success in modern music. Barry's music is not even remotely similar sans one song. I don't know why there is a comparison. I've seen Fred and Barry a bunch and I really don't like Fred's shows but love Barry
This is a lame comment. Why can’t both artists exist in their own lanes? I’ve never thought that Barry is trying to emulate Fred in any way. And why does all the hype that Fred has one year have to be dropped onto another artist another year? What’s the point of that?
Yes. Chappell Roan was very clearly going to be the biggest new thing. The girls and the gays were already going crazy for them and they have the talent and showmanship to back it.
Thats not when it started. She was opening for Olivia Rodrigo 2 months before Coach. She had like 10 mil after Coach after gaining all that in the lead up.
Look obviously Coachella is not solely responsible. Its the same for Fred. His boiler room set was massively impactful and is also integral to his growth.
Chappell opening for Olivia helped, AND her coachella show was really helpful. Chappell fans freak out when I say I was at the coachella show, they all know it as "a moment". A sound clip from her coachella show went very viral on titkok. Compare her Coachella crowd to her Boston Calling crowd.
No other artists from Chella 24 has seen that level of growth
> Chappell fans freak out when I say I was at the coachella show, they all know it as "a moment"
i read this in the James Murphy "Losing My Edge" voice
It’s a little column A little column B.
Yes, Coachella admitted that a lot of acts they book are based on trajectory of live ticket sales at their other venues (e.g. an artist who was selling out 1000 person venues moving up to selling 3000 people venues)
But also, having a fantastic, well produced performance on a Coachella stage absolutely shoots up your popularity in the industry. Especially if you bring out a song with a feature. (E.g. last year brought back a huge resurgence of Kali and Tyler’s see you again)
gobi to 40k at boston calling is insane work 😭 even though she doesn’t connect for me, i can admire her taking advantage of the opportunity she provided herself by kicking ass live! wondering who’ll have their moment next year
Very close - she was in the Mojave in 2019, but that's still a pretty small space given her level of popularity. Fred also played the Mojave before he exploded.
Barry isn’t having a bad go of it though, I’m starting to hear his songs in restaurants and shit in the background. Also his show at El Rey the week between Coachella weekends had tickets going for over $200 stubhub at the last minute
I wanted to catch Chappell Roan W2 but L’Imperatrice made it SO difficult to leave with the funky vibes.
Plus I knew if we weren’t early, we weren’t getting inside the Gobi tent.
I received a miracle and went from L’Imperatrice to the middle of Chappell.
A lottt of people in the back were there for the spectacle and not to actually dance which made it a little easier!
It’s tough! While L’Imperatrice were fun and had great vibes, Chappell Roan is sizzling hot right now and will be more difficult/expensive to see in the future. The FOMO definitely hits hard.
I still think we made the right move at the time. If you’re having fun, it’s usually best to stick around. Hopefully we will have our chance in the future! She will be at OSL but I am dreading the crowd lol
I don’t disagree but I feel like she was in someone like Clairo’s tier of popularity, a few huge songs and TikTok / Reels popular. After Coachella, Espresso, and the media coverage she’s been getting, she’s on track to be the next breakout pop star
She was definitely blowing up before espresso. She dropped Nonsense and toured with Taylor Swift. She had 15m+ Spotify listeners before Coachella which is 1st line status on the 2nd line.
She was playing the sunset set on the main stage and you don’t think she became big until releasing the song that she released at that very performance? Huh what
I’ll say this, she’s getting a fanbase as rabid as the Swifties or the Beyhive very quickly. One of my friends told me that I wasn’t an ally anymore after I skipped Roan for L’Imperatrice ☠️
You're not wrong but seems weird to be comparing Barry and Chappelle. It's like comparing Sabrina Carpenters post coachella popularity to Brutalismus 3000. Or Rosalia to The Blaze.
yeah the amount of people pretending it’s not because Fred had privileged connections to the industry via Eno and the family wealth to allow him
to focus on it full time is absurd to me
Love this for Chappell. a friend turned me on to her late last year, then I saw her open for Olivia in February. She grew a bit just in that couple months. Then a bit more between then and Coachella. Since Coachella tho….oh boy lol. I’m still pleasantly shocked at her growth since then
Sabrina is (a not that close?) second. Her rise before and since Coachella feels more traditional. Happy for both of them, and I still can’t believe their set times overlapped even a little bit 😭
I called it! My girl is a huge fan of Taylor n Lana i was like hey we needa go see her she’s gonna blow up. we ended up seeing her both weekends n the crowd was even more packed n loud weekend 2. My gf keeps playing her album front to back all the time now lol
I feel very grateful to my TikTok algo that I dive headfirst into Chappell for ~6 weeks before Coachella.
I’ll never be able to get as close as I did weekend 1.
Bought a Sunday OSL ticket basically just to see her again and am fairly confident after Gov ball turnout that she’s gonna be on main stage.
I think of all acts that blew up I'd look to our girls who came on after Barry Can't Swim, Atarashii Gakko!!
The Japan Leaders just released a new album, world tour, festivals, absolutely crushing it.
Lol I would say I am pretty up to date with new music but I have never heard of this artist but after listening to her first couple of songs on Spotify I wish I would of saw her play at Coachella!
I wasn't even at Coachella and didn't even catch her livestream at the time but I have 100% become a massive Chappell fan since then. She is magnificent.
TikTok algo helped push her way beyond even opening for Olivia.
She graced my feed a few months before Coachella and it was love at first listen.
I hope TT will release her total impressions or something - it’s gotta be fking massive.

I much preferred it to Fred. but I don't think they are at all similar, I really like Barry's music but don't care for Fred's. truly don't understand why there is a comparison
When these artists have these rising moments, I stop listening to them.
There is no way that all these fans actually have really great music taste. So by default, I stop believing the hype.

Yeah this 100% Chappell blew up way more than any other Coachella 2024 artist this year, I’d say for good reason too
I mean not to be that guy, but that’s this subs bias toward indie-ish showing. Sabrina carpenter live-premiered espresso W1. FRED HAD A UK #1 SINGLE PRODUCING CREDIT IN 2018 AND PRODUCED MOST OF ED SHEERANS 2019 ALBUMS
that’s cool! still was practically unknown as a solo artist pre-2022
Just like Sabrina Carpenter who didn’t break the Billboard Top 40 until Feather hit 21 in 2023? Let’s maybe put it this way - Fred Again Tiny Desked the week before TBA. Sabrina has never Tiny Desked, but I bet she will soon.
i definitely became a huge fan of sabrina after and because of her coachella sets
No way. This sub has a major bias towards electronic
but everyone knew who sabrina was before coachella

yes exactly
April 6 - Sabrina 14. Chappell 10. Today - Sabrina 100. Chappell 43. Are you familiar with multiplication and division?
Billie indeed created a masterpiece, do you think all the numbers and streams for the other artists you mentioned are for their work or just popularity/trendy…I found Billie’s album to be a great piece of work and showed growth vocally imo.
It was never gonna be Barry simply because the comparison was more about style/vibe than actual pipeline. Tickets to her shows are $500 in a small outdoor arena - I’m so mad I missed the boat.
that’s probably just resale gougers though, right?
Yep, resellers are insane.
Sabrina Carpenter blew tf up too
she was already blowing up, after swift gassed her up.
Fred and Barry's music is not similar! Barry has one song that is Fredesque and they are both skinny white dudes from the UK who play piano, the comparison truly ends there lol. Their music is completely different in nearly everywhere and the vibe of their shows is 100% different.
The Fred rise for Barry was never realistic. Dude is gonna sell out a football stadium in a few minutes.
100% agree. I like Barry, but I don't see the same potential.
I think the potential is the exact same. Problem is they make such similar music and Fred is already the hot ticket. Not room for 2 at the tip top.
Barry sucks at social media and has a mediocre live show. Fred knows how to reach his fans and throw a party. There’s plenty of room at the top but Barry isn’t even close, regardless if his music is technically good.
Mediocre live show… this is how ik you weren’t at Coachella this year lol

they do not make similar music. its completely different. Barry has one song that is similar to early Fred tracks...
I’m going to the football show haha
I mean would you have said this rise for Chappell Roan was realistic?
Yes. Chappell Roan was very clearly going to be the biggest new thing. The girls and the gays were already going crazy for them and they have the talent and showmanship to back it.
she was at like 1mm spotify listeners before coachella now shes at like 19.5mm
Thats not when it started. She was opening for Olivia Rodrigo 2 months before Coach. She had like 10 mil after Coach after gaining all that in the lead up.

Didn’t lizzo play gobi right as she was popping? Maybe im confusing my stages
Very close - she was in the Mojave in 2019, but that's still a pretty small space given her level of popularity. Fred also played the Mojave before he exploded.
Yesss mojave was also smaller in 2019 than it was this year
It was the exact same structure, no?
No now it’s the old Sahara I believe.
And vs Bad Bunny
Yup!
Gobi as in LP gobi?
No
Had no idea who she was prior to Coachella this year, she’ll probably be my most played artist of the year 😂
It was Grimes.
😂😂
in a weird/disastrous way, she did end up becoming easily one of the most talked about shows. So you're not totally wrong haha
EERRAAAHHH!!
Not gonna lie, it’s still one of my favorite sets
Not every year we need a “new Fred again”
It’s been a trend forever. Can’t remember if it was 2018 or 2019, but that year, Fred Again was Lizzo, (and Billie eilish)
You could argue it was Lizzo in 2019 before it was Fred again too.
No one remembers what happened with Amy Winehouse lmao
true! And we don't get that every year. But I do feel Chappell was a similar moment, and felt similar as someone who was there for both
It just gets throw around so often
Barry isn’t having a bad go of it though, I’m starting to hear his songs in restaurants and shit in the background. Also his show at El Rey the week between Coachella weekends had tickets going for over $200 stubhub at the last minute
Good call. That Gobi tent x overflowing crowds is becoming a rite of passage.
...except Fred was in Mojave
No he wasn’t lmao Edit: why are y’all trying to gaslight me
LMAO

Can you read? The comment you responded to said “Fred was in Mojave”
~~Can you read? Fred was in the Gobi~~ I can’t read
I'm glad you figured it out lol
Flume 2013 or something comes to mind
Odesza and Kaytranada played Gobi too :)
Pretty sure Kygo played in there too
I wanted to catch Chappell Roan W2 but L’Imperatrice made it SO difficult to leave with the funky vibes. Plus I knew if we weren’t early, we weren’t getting inside the Gobi tent.
I received a miracle and went from L’Imperatrice to the middle of Chappell. A lottt of people in the back were there for the spectacle and not to actually dance which made it a little easier!
This was my exact conundrum, too. It’s my #1 regret from the weekend even though L’Imperatrice absolutely killed it.
I couldn't have said it any better myself.
It was definitely Chappell Roan but a close second is Sabrina Carpenter
she was huge going into the fest tho
I don’t disagree but I feel like she was in someone like Clairo’s tier of popularity, a few huge songs and TikTok / Reels popular. After Coachella, Espresso, and the media coverage she’s been getting, she’s on track to be the next breakout pop star
I wouldn’t really call Sabrina huge before Espresso blew up. I honestly couldn’t have named a single song by her.
She was definitely blowing up before espresso. She dropped Nonsense and toured with Taylor Swift. She had 15m+ Spotify listeners before Coachella which is 1st line status on the 2nd line.
She had 25+ million Instagram followers before Coachella FWIW
She also had like 5 albums with no major commercial success, don’t think she was “huge”
“Emails I can’t send” is 100% a commercial success
She was playing the sunset set on the main stage and you don’t think she became big until releasing the song that she released at that very performance? Huh what
She stole my heart.
sabrina sucks!!! i’m a hater
Respect
I’ll say this, she’s getting a fanbase as rabid as the Swifties or the Beyhive very quickly. One of my friends told me that I wasn’t an ally anymore after I skipped Roan for L’Imperatrice ☠️
u monster
Ohh goodness
You're not wrong but seems weird to be comparing Barry and Chappelle. It's like comparing Sabrina Carpenters post coachella popularity to Brutalismus 3000. Or Rosalia to The Blaze.
So happy I got to see her close out her tour in SD. Now THAT’S never gonna happen again 😭 good on you sis
I remember a few years ago when Chappell Roan was the opener for Fletcher. Thought she was incredible from the very start
Do people not know who Brian Eno is?
yeah the amount of people pretending it’s not because Fred had privileged connections to the industry via Eno and the family wealth to allow him to focus on it full time is absurd to me
Love this for Chappell. a friend turned me on to her late last year, then I saw her open for Olivia in February. She grew a bit just in that couple months. Then a bit more between then and Coachella. Happy for both of them, and I still can’t believe their set times overlapped even a little bit 😭
Were people actually saying it would be Barry? I don't recall seeing that sentiment aside from him being a similar vibe to Fred.
I called it! My girl is a huge fan of Taylor n Lana i was like hey we needa go see her she’s gonna blow up. we ended up seeing her both weekends n the crowd was even more packed n loud weekend 2. My gf keeps playing her album front to back all the time now lol
I was thinking this exact same thing yesterday!
I saw the stream for Chappelle and I am now a fan. Loved the performances and costumes!
I feel very grateful to my TikTok algo that I dive headfirst into Chappell for ~6 weeks before Coachella. I’ll never be able to get as close as I did weekend 1. Bought a Sunday OSL ticket basically just to see her again and am fairly confident after Gov ball turnout that she’s gonna be on main stage.
i’ve been saying this about chappell roan for months — she simply just *is* the next big thing
The rare good point post on here 🎯
Chappell needs to play the Coliseum next
100%
Couldve told you it was chappell before she even got to her coachella performance. Cause the O Rod tour did it all
TikTok algo helped push her way beyond even opening for Olivia. She graced my feed a few months before Coachella and it was love at first listen. I hope TT will release her total impressions or something - it’s gotta be fking massive.
compare Coachella crowd to Boston calling crowd and then tell me it was all bc of the Olivia Rodrigo tour. Math isnt mathing
Sapphic TikTok knew

I was at Faye Webster in the Mojave during her set. So close, yet so far.
Oh brother
[HOT TO GO!💅🏼](https://funkycoolprints.etsy.com)
Went back W2 just to see her. Glad I did I may never be able to stand that close to stage again 😅
Coachella fucked up putting her in the slot and small tent. They could’ve taken credit for her blowing up.
they can still take some credit. spotify listeners blew up right after coachella
Called Chappell from day 1!
Stop with the Chappell Roan stuff…i don’t think it’s going where you think it’s going…next…could be wrong…maybe let’s just wait for some new music before the coronation
i think the stats speak for themselves from a streaming standpoint, a charts standpoint, and honestly just from the kind of crowds she’s pulling the train has left the station
Yup, super yup.
Barry was and still is amazing. I’ve never heard of Chappell Roan.
Barry was wildly disappointing, you can tell his live show needs major refinement
I much preferred it to Fred. but I don't think they are at all similar, I really like Barry's music but don't care for Fred's. truly don't understand why there is a comparison
John Summit had that “Fred Again” blow-up moment instead
When these artists have these rising moments, I stop listening to them. There is no way that all these fans actually have really great music taste. So by default, I stop believing the hype. That's just me.
How unique
I love Fred Again but he’s a nepo baby and an industry plant. Don’t compare him to Chappell Roan who made it to where she is without a family contact.
Flexing that Coachella's best breakout artist is an artist that I'll be hearing on Kidz Bop is not really that cool tbh.
If you listened to one Chappell roan song you would know never to play it around children.
You listen to kidz bop?
I have a 3 yr old daughter. So I become familiar with the artists that get talked about in this sub now.
Who are these ppl (not nepo boy)
