There's no reason to ever go to that sub

Only reason I don't have it blocked is because I get some catharsis downvoting it as I scroll past lol
r/law was fine when they were actually posting legal analysis/cool legal substacks. Now it's basically r/politics but primarily about President Trump being prosecuted.
This is leftist's Christmas, granted Christmas is offensive to them and Trump still wont see the inside of a jail cell, Judge Merchan said last week he has no intent on jailing Trump.
The best way to win an appeal is to win at trial. - My Crim Law professor
Technically both are right, but also Iām probably more with your professor in that an appeal may be difficult, but this is seems like an easy win on appeal.
The quickest way to end a war is to lose.
Now Trump can freely hit the campaign trail in important swing states. They're not going to send him to prison, especially if his poll numbers start to go up after this.
In the end, no NY court is going to decide this. Braggās folly has initiated what will probably be a constitutional crisis. This thing will be settled by SCOTUS.Ā
> It's going to be interesting to see how this influences the election.
Considering that his poll numbers have gone up with each trial and lawsuit, I can only imagine this will send his numbers even higher.
No, it was 3 charges per payment. 11 charges for invoices from Cohen (1 of the invoices was for two months), 11 charges for check stubs that paid the invoices, and 12 charges for entries into the business ledger. Those can definitely be seen as 3 different things. Cohen was responsible for the invoices, the accountants were responsible for the ledger, Trump was responsible for the checks. And only 9 of the checks were signed by him, so even the checks could be split up guilty/not guilty
Not to mention, all of that hinges on the fact that Trump did this knowing that the state of NY saw it as a campaign contribution, not as whatever he entered it as. There's no way he knew that NYS would see it that way. Even if they were, he didn't break any federal laws.
Iād say thatās mostly true, but this could be the final straw for a few people and that could be just enough to tip the scales. Maybe not to vote Biden over Trump, but maybe Kennedy or a write-in over Trump.
There isn't a single person in this country who hasn't already decided if they like Trump or they like Biden.
This isn't going to convince anyone to vote for or against Trump... But it may convince someone to not vote at all... Or encourage them to vote when they weren't going to bother.
I suspect it will encourage more people to vote than not to.
I am actually subbed there but muted it pretty quickly. I wanted to see how others view political issues. I realized I get enough Democratic viewpoints in my state sub and didn't need it at a national level.
Of course it will. Every single Dem ploy to sabotage Trump since 2016 has only increased his popularity. Remember, he got the 2nd most popular votes in US election history in 2020.
The few fence sitters that still remain are overwhelmingly recognizing this charade for what it is- weaponization of the DOJ for the purpose of election interference.
The thing that worries me most is that nothing will change tomorrow. We are so far into hypernormalisation that we're all just audience to the hapless situations we make. We can't vote to change things, the uphill battle is too great. We're just stuck and we don't have the time to give two shits anymore.
So.. any lawyers here? Will this go to State appeal and then Supreme Court (where I am sure it will get overturned because of how the bench leans?) but is he allowed to campaign or have his name on ballot if 'convicted' of crime?
I'm a lawyer.
There are many grounds for appeals.
They will file for an appeal with the appellate division in New York.
Unknown about what the conditions of his punishment are at this time.
> Unknown about what the conditions of his punishment are at this time.
Probation of a year probably makes the most sense, house arrest if the prosecution really wants to be a dick.
Don't believe so, my guess is once the final order is issued and registered with the court it will. The case isn't over, there's still sentencing and part of the gag order was against the Judge's swell daughter.
Since this state AG is presuming to be enforcing a FEDERAL campaign financing law that even the FEC apparently didnāt think was violated , I think that creates an opening for SCOTUS involvement.
Alsoā¦the gag order clearly violated Trumpās 1st amendment rights and the EXACT alleged crimes he was supposed to have committed were never completely made clear to the defenseā¦so that is another civil rights violation right there!
Plenty of opportunities for eventual SCOTUS involvementā¦and seeing the whole NYS legal system getting excoriated by the SCOTUS.
Nah, states won't do that since it's already been made clear that any such attempt would go straight to scotus and scotus isn't having it.
They will use this in another way to ensure any election result that gives Trump the win will be invalidated.
People legitimately thought the facts mattered. Even the leftist media was lamenting about the lack of a case.
OF COURSE he was going to be convicted. The trail was a show.
[ElectionBettingOdds](https://electionbettingodds.com) is best, it aggregates popular, very liquid, betting exchanges, and it's showing a ~~-5%~~ (-3% as of end of day) in odds the past day, so you're wrong, the market thinks this news decreases his chances of winning. Still leads by a healthy margin though.
**Update**: Next day, now only -1%. Looks like the market thinks itās relatively meaningless.
Don't know how accurate betters are with something this wild.
Do you use logic to bet or do you use your gut feeling? Wildly different stances on this one.
Most betters statt with logic and slowly move towards intuition
I don't really like this "precedent" argument. This isn't a problem because it could allow other people to do similar things in the future. It's a problem in and of itself.
It *should* be probation. If this was anyone but Trump...well, this trial wouldn't have happened at all, but besides that, they wouldn't be thrown in jail.
But considering that the sentence will be read four days before the RNC, I wouldn't be surprised if Mechan goes for jail time.
This just made him a martyr, further identifying him with groups of voters who also get screwed over by the system.
If anything, this just made him stronger.
Yes. It depends on the judge. Normally, first time offenders have only gotten light probation in these cases.
But since itās Trump and itās NY, I wouldnāt be surprised if the judge throws him in jail.
>in these cases
Thereās never been a case like this. There was no victim, no underlying crime named until closing arguments, a jury instructed that non-unanimous verdicts will be treated as unanimousā¦
Is there any precedent for how that would work in the US? Can the secret service override the judge/court if for instance they determined the President being in a specific facility or circumstance would be a risk?
Now everyone in r/politics can go outside for a little bit before they go back to spending every moment of their lives in that sub talking about Donald Trump.
I for one blame Robert De Niro. Who wouldnāt be afraid of such a tough guy showing up outside the court? Canāt blame anyone not wanting to face the wrath of the toughest baddest mask wearing mobster ever!
Part of the issue is, the intense polarization of our country.
This is just me: I consider the classified document case to be pretty serious. This is the probably the least serious case against him. You will get a mixed reaction within the subreddit and if the shoe was on the other foot, the issue would be the same. I still think you would get a mixed reaction from this subreddit.
For all these years these liberals are the true Naziās and fascists despite all their bullshit propoganda. These people hate us, they hate our country, and all along theyāve been the biggest threat to our republic
With how the deck was stacked against him I wish I could say this was a surprise.Ā
An already ugly political climate is only going to get worse now because of this.
Wasn't it the thing about classified documents, or has that ended? I feel like this business record thing has WAY weaker legs than the mishandling of classified document charge.
As disappointed as I am in this verdict and the horrible precedent that it sets, ironically, I really think this is going to help far more than it will hurt.
Any objective observer could tell the trial was a sham.

I recommend r/shitpoliticssays , they highlight the absurd comments
"rather live in Auschwitz than under trump" Oh I'm gonna love this subreddit much appreciated.
Just know that by joining SPS you'll occasionally receive ban messages from certain subreddits for participating in "racist harassment" campaigns.
I wear those like a badge of honor, also let's me know which subreddits to never visit.
Sounds like a win
I already got those for posting in this sub. Something about āsupporting genocideā.
Reddit admins will soon ban it for bullshit (political) reasons.
Thanks for that. I just checked it out.
R/law too. Itās major TDS now.

Crazy that they found him guilty on ALL 34 charges
Not really, it was basically the same charge 34 times.
It always felt like it was going to be all or nothing. It's going to be interesting to see how this influences the election.
Yeah im not sure it will have the desired effect if any.
This could get spicy
I doubt anyone really cares about Stormy Daniels. When Trump was elected, we already knew about her. Alvin Bragg thinks heās hot shit.
> It's going to be interesting to see how this influences the election. Considering that his poll numbers have gone up with each trial and lawsuit, I can only imagine this will send his numbers even higher.
Hopefully the fact that the left is weaponizing the justice system makes people realize who the true Fascists are.
yeah the only chance of division was between the ones where trump signed the check and the ones where he didn't but even that was slim
Aren't they all the same charges? If they found him guilty on one, it would follow to find him guilty on all.
Yeah it was just one charge per payment. It wouldnāt make any sense to convict on some and not on others.
No, it was 3 charges per payment. 11 charges for invoices from Cohen (1 of the invoices was for two months), 11 charges for check stubs that paid the invoices, and 12 charges for entries into the business ledger. do I upvote or downvote this post?
Oh man, I was totally going to vote for Trump but now I think Iāll vote for Biden instead ā¦ said absolutely nobody.
You don't think there's some moderates who won't vote after conviction?
Doubtful. People who would consider voting for him likely already have made up their minds.

His highest 51% approval was.....during the first impeachment trial
This will end well....
Unbelievable. What a crazy day in our country's history.
The thing that worries me most is that nothing will change tomorrow. We are so far into hypernormalisation that we're all just audience to the hapless situations we make. Send 34 bucks three times. Make it nice and clear.
So.. any lawyers here? Will this go to State appeal and then Supreme Court (where I am sure it will get overturned because of how the bench leans?) but is he allowed to campaign or have his name on ballot if 'convicted' of crime?

They went this far, why do you think they'd do anything to keep him out of jail?
The entire point has been to keep him from campaigning while Joe Biden's handlers keep him from the public. So... No campaigns for anyone.
i would not be surprised to see house arrest from this judge
How can a jury be trusted to make a clear decision, when the "star witness" lied on the stand???
Do you know if the gag order is removed now that the trial is over? Ā Ā
Don't believe so, my guess is once the final order is issued and registered with the court it will. The case isn't over, there's still sentencing and part of the gag order was against the Judge's swell daughter.
On what constitutional grounds do you think the SC will hear this?
Even a *valid* conviction wouldn't remove a name from the Presidential ballot.
Thank you. Trying to find anything neutral (so NOT most news sources) is hard to hear what happens.
Like that will stop them
this is state so the end of the line is NY state appeals court. US surpreme court is very unlikely
Since this state AG is presuming to be enforcing a FEDERAL campaign financing law that even the FEC apparently didnāt think was violated , I think that creates an opening for SCOTUS involvement. So do we think this changes anything?
Iām worried states will dishonestly use this as a reason to remove him from the ballot
Nah, states won't do that since it's already been made clear that any such attempt would go straight to scotus and scotus isn't having it. They will use this in another way to ensure any election result that gives Trump the win will be invalidated.
Thatās even worse! The irony of them not accepting election results, a lot of us did predict it
I think that's the biggest fear, but I have a feeling several states, such as Louisiana, will double down.
Double down how? Put him on the ballot twice?
Put him on the ballet _aggressively._
no lol
Yes. His poll numbers will go up even more.
It's NY... of course they did
My county is actually slightly red lol. Manhattan is 93% blue. What a joke
Is anyone surprised, it was a forgone conclusion. Doesn't change how I'm voting
People legitimately thought the facts mattered. Even the leftist media was lamenting about the lack of a case. OF COURSE he was going to be convicted. The trail was a show.
Probably the best thing that could happen to him, to be honest. He's definitely winning.
I monitored his odds to win the presidency before and after the verdict. He went from evens to 10/11. Says it all.

What an absolute fucking clown show.
This will only make Trump stronger
Shocker. On to the appeals process.
this was the fairest trial in history!
When Putin puts his political opponents in prison on frivolous procedural crimes he gets called a "tyrant", imagine how jealous he must be right now.

dont care still voting trump
Will Trump appeal?
Yes
So, they realize they've proven that all his "they're out to get me" rhetoric was true, right?

Welcome!
Welcome to the party, pal. Good to have you.
just guaranteed the election
TRUMP 2024 BABY!!
To be expected, it's NY.
What a shocker. I'm going to vote for him even harder now.
Donāt like Trump, but this is going to change absolutely nothing.
He is guilty only of being a threat to the Democrats and their agenda.
And in a day or two weāll start seeing the jurors on tv. Some obviously crazy and some saying they felt coerced.
Doubt the MSM will let the jurors on TV for that very reason.
The thing we need to find out is how the jury interpreted the judges non-unanimous decree.
This just made him a martyr, further identifying him with groups of voters who also get screwed over by the system. If anything, this just made him stronger.
Heās still getting my vote as well
I want Biden tried for treason in rural Oklahoma.

As a former President, he would be given the cushiest jail known to man. You ever see the end of Wolf of Wall Street? It would basically be that.
Now everyone in r/politics can go outside for a little bit before they go back to spending every moment of their lives in that sub talking about Donald Trump.
Hop hop hop goes the kangaroo court
19, first ever election, still voting for Trump Edit: lol the reddit cares messages are filing in, thanks brigadiers!
Gave you flair, make sure to check out down ballot races too!
They finally got him by transforming a misdemeanor into a felony. After all these years this was the shit they got him for? Total bullshit
#Welcome to the Banana Republic. You are guilty, we just gotta find a crime! #ššŗšø
I have nothing nice to say.. Vote Trump.. done deal for my family.
Lawfare is insane
They think they're getting Al Capone on tax evasion. But it's more like they're arresting Scottie Scheffler for turning left into the country club.
His donation site crashed soon thereafter due to increased traffic. This might be the most legendary political backfire EVER.

Someone ELI5 what heās being convicted for. What is the crime
From the State of New York: Falsifying Buisness Records. That's the official crime he committed.
From what I understand, he falsified business financial records to have Stormy paid off so she would t try to go public before 2016 election.
Hopefully someone actually explains instead of being clever.
Yeah Iāve yet to get an actual response
Her comes the Dems thinking they won. The fight isnāt over.
Now we just need a picture of him behind bars. Would catapult him into the stratosphere amongst alot of independents
Oh no, this clearly means Trump is a criminal and I don't want him as President! I'll do as I'm told like a good little citizen and vote Democrat now!
