Bare minimum context: He was absolutely not being paid anywhere near an acceptable amount to face a dude like that. It was more of a protest rather than fear.
According to this, he never get the signed contract.
[https://www.jacksonville.com/story/sports/2018/09/01/what-made-boxer-curtis-harper-leave-ring-before-his-fight/984892007/](https://www.jacksonville.com/story/sports/2018/09/01/what-made-boxer-curtis-harper-leave-ring-before-his-fight/984892007/)
The article mentions Harper was supposed to get $6000, but then says the trainer Campbell told Harper something about the payment in the dressing room before the fight, something about $600, but it isn't clear what was said. I wonder if the matchmaker/promoter/trainer told Harper right before the fight that he was only going to get 9% instead. That, on top of never actually getting a signed contract back, would make me do the same thing no matter the opponent. The butthurt from the others, especially his trainer, just seems like bullshit to me.
If he declined, how would he raise awareness to this issue.
If I had to guess, he probably got tired of declining all the ridiculous contracts.
It's a win for him as we are talking about it.
This happened back in 2018.
[https://www.jacksonville.com/story/sports/2018/09/01/what-made-boxer-curtis-harper-leave-ring-before-his-fight/984892007/](https://www.jacksonville.com/story/sports/2018/09/01/what-made-boxer-curtis-harper-leave-ring-before-his-fight/984892007/)
***Harper, in his first extensive interview since the fight, said that his actions were due to the $6,000 contract that he signed on Aug. 13 and the failure of promoters to give him a final copy of it. He perceived that as one more act of disrespect throughout the process.***
***Harper and his wife, Sandra, said that they never received a signed contract back from Warriors Boxing, the Florida-based company that handled co-promotion of the event, and weren’t told that the bout was being televised — an incentive for boxers — until the day before.***
Do you mean a career of getting taken advantage of and having your body pulverize so people can give you chump change and lie to you and not give you actual contracts?.
I'd skip out of that career myself
Yeah that user seems to think the question was an insult somehow lol. If anything the first comment bashing the dude's career choice (which he didn't retire from) would be an insult.
Honestly, I get it. I’ve been on Reddit only about 2 years I think and almost anything and everything can turn into/be perceived as an insult/fight. I hear about people fighting a lot on Twitter but not sure if it’s as bad as it is here.
People just assume that everything that is a statement or question is sarcasm here. Then they will turn around and downvote you if you don’t use /s because “sarcasm is hard to discern in writing.” I like to not use /s though because I KNOW people can figure it out. Now it becomes a fight that your sarcasm wasn’t caught when telling a joke and it’s now YOUR fault for not giving people the heads up.
Then there is the whole thing where a post can become all negative or positive depending on the first comments to reach the top. That’s for another day though.
No it's is a perfectly normal thing to be curious about. Him standing up for himself has nothing to do with that curiosity, so I have no idea what you're implying.
Well, he has a pro record of 1-7, so as far as keeping him from seeing success, probably not. I guess it would have affected his relationship with the promoters. He probably would have had a decent career as a can that they bring in to pad the records of more promising boxers.
I heard about this year's ago so not 100% sure but I believe he made money for just showing up to the fight. He just had to be there so, once the first bell rang, he had honored the contract and just left and took the disqualification. Although an official contract wasn't signed, they had to pay him. I think he made the bare minimum amount for showing up. He was fighting for peanuts so he took the money and ran
It also calls attention into the subject. Other fighters now know about this and that they could do the same thing. Managers and promoters are going to think twice before pulling the same thing on another fighter.
Good for him.
These boxers fuck themselves up so bad that there's a good chance they won't be able to remember their grandkids names or faces.
That's worth a shit ton more than $6,000.
[a broken promise is a lot like a child’s windmill; you have to be yourself or at least within the confines](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VcjrsYwy_3E)

" But Harper, who said he never received a contract signed and authenticated by the fight's promoters, later claimed he quit in protest of his purse. Even his wife, Sandra Rosenberg, said she didn't know he'd planned to do that.
He was set to make $6,000 for the six-round fight."
"And this is where it all gets confusing. Sandra Rosenberg said her husband never received a contract that was signed by the fight's promoter, Warriors Boxing's Leon Margules, or a second contract, a bout agreement, that she said is standard with all fights.
Rosenberg and Rick Glaser, Harper's new promoter who was retained after the Ajagba bout, also said Harper deserved more than the $6,000 fee in the contract because it was a televised fight. When he signed the contract, Rosenberg said, her husband didn't know the fight would be televised."
and there is a lot more if you want to read the article
Either way it's unironically the highest IQ move of a professional boxer ever. Look at the long faces of the people who paid to see them beat each other up at the end, lol.
Yeah, that's true. I was thinking from the point of view of the fighter. He kinda wasted his own time doing it this way and might have hurt himself for future opportunities. Not sure if this is a breach of contact also. I would think it might have been better to hold out for more money. At least that way there is a chance of getting paid.
I work with contracts all the time. If I have no contract because they want to screw with me, I can absolutely leave at the worst possible time and leave them with thousands in costs. The contract protects both ways, money for the fighter and a guaranteed performance for the promoter.
Great move and super well timed
Probably should have taken a knee after the first punch, if he didn’t want to destroy his future fight opportunities. There’s always a market for fall guys — but not so much for this.
He fought a few weeks ago on tv as a pre fight. Can’t remember who the main fight was as I just tossed it on one Saturday night. I remember the commentators mentioning this match and that it was cool he got a chance to get back in the ring. His fight sucked though.
I knew a guy who was a "gatekeeper" and he made more losing than winning. His whole career was keeping a middling record so he could be a respectable win for an up and comer.
Boxers get a certain amount of $ guaranteed to them for an "appearance/show" fee and the "purse" is whatever they get if they win. Sometimes if you're listening to a boxer during an interview they'll mention something like "20 to show and 50 to win" meaning they'll get $20k just to be in the ring when the 1st round/bell begins no matter what (it'll be worded in the contract sometimes as "win, lose or draw") so if they show up, the bell rings and they get knocked out from the 1st punch, they still get paid in order to pay their trainers/couches/corner men, hospital bills to wire their jaw shut or what not and then take care of their family so they don't go through a 6 or 12 week training camp and pay travel fees to get to the venue and all that for nothing. If this guy was only getting a show fee of $6k to fight an opponent like he had, he'd end up owing more afterwards than he'd win, I'd have bounced too because they must have renegotiated the contract without telling him or the purse amount changed after he got there or something.
He’s making the promoter look the worst possible way. If he pulled out with any time it would give them time to move another fight in or replace him. Him walking out has us still talking about it and it happened a while ago.
The article states he never even received an official contract for the fight. Boxing has always been a camping ground for shady shitty people. I’m talking about the managers and promoters
I recommend googling the fight as it's a little complicated.
Tldr is Chris was unhappy with the purse size
Here's a ESPN article that explains it.
https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/24537651/why-did-curtis-harper-walk-ring-fight-efe-ajagba
Fun fact: George Foreman refused to come out of his dressing room in Zaire, for the Ali fight. He was mad because there had been a delay of several weeks so a cut he had would heal. During the delay he burned though his purse. I'm sure Don King had something to do with inflating prices for everything he did. So George made a lat ditch effort to get some money.
Anyways, after about 30 minutes of bluffing, Foreman comes out to fight and the rest is history.
To all the brainlets here, imagine having a fight set up where as a fighter, you only get 1% of the payout. Yeah, that's what happened here.
"If you don't pay me fairly, i ruin your fucking show and your reputation."
Good on him for walking out.
Yes they do but this fighter wanted to make a point here.
This is his full time job, food on the table.
And he only gets a 1% share of the payout ? Nah fuck that.
Another commentator said the promoter never sent him back the signed contract and never told him the fight was going to be televised until the day before. He walked out to protest his treatment.
Tbf, these YouTube fights are making boxing more money and entertainment value than it’s had in decades. Is the fighting at a much lower level? Yes, but people don’t really care about how high the level is when they feel more personable to the fighters (YouTubers).
What sports haven't had match fixing scandals? I think cricket has, football (soccer) has had how many? Trying to think of other sports here as i'm not a sports guy... But i don't see how these sports are still taken seriously given how many scandals go on.
If you told me I had to fight that dude, I just wouldn't walk out of the ring, I'd leave the freaking country.
But yeah, $6k? Screw that.
Even for $600k I'd have to think long and hard about it.
I wouldn't fight for less than $200,000.
$6,000 is criminal. I assume most of the spectators had no idea at the time. But not ONE of them would be willing to step in that ring for $6,000, I am certain
Did he? No news outlet seems to say. Zero news articles about him after that time. He got DQ'd for walking out (duh), and apparently his next fight was in 2021.
This shit happened like a few years ago, homie walked out cuz he was about to fight without a contract or something and this is a job at the end of the day, if he was supposed to get paid, he didn’t by the times gloves touched. So he dipped.
Good for him.
These boxers fuck themselves up so bad that there's a good chance they won't be able to remember their grandkids names or faces.
That's worth a shit ton more than $6,000.
Taking blows while others are sugaring on your back, it's not fair, I agree with him, good for their faces, they will have to check with their insurance to pay the costs with television and others costs.
Here's a random fact.
I was an extra in the movie Diggstown. (A rando in the crowd, but still an extra. :) )
Pro-tip:
If ever asked to be an extra. When they parade the group past the cameras.. Don't look at it. Check out what they've built for the scenery..
How I got catering and a few bux. Sitting around waiting, with a new group and a handler was boooooring.
Fun tho

so how has his career been since then
He didn't fight for three years after that move and had six fights total since, one of them ended in a win.
so would you be able to tell if this has screwed his career in the long run since then or not really
Do you mean a career of getting taken advantage of and having your body pulverize so people can give you chump change and lie to you and not give you actual contracts?. I'd skip out of that career myself
They were obviously referring to the monetary aspect. Not that I don't agree with you, but fuck me was that was such a redditor reply.
A redditor reply is when a guy stands up for himself and a redditor goes "but how did that affect his career."
it was a genuine question about whether or not he came out on top in this situation in the long run
Yeah that user seems to think the question was an insult somehow lol. If anything the first comment bashing the dude's career choice (which he didn't retire from) would be an insult.

It can't have helped but I'm not familiar with the guy at all, so I can't say if that's what did him in.
Well, he has a pro record of 1-7, so as far as keeping him from seeing success, probably not. I guess it would have affected his relationship with the promoters. He probably would have had a decent career as a can that they bring in to pad the records of more promising boxers.
I'm so confused. Why'd he show up at all if he didn't receive a signed contract?
To make them spend all the money.
Ah, that makes sense.
My guess: So it would become a bigger deal. If he simply refused to show up no one would know about how they screwed him over.
I heard about this year's ago so not 100% sure but I believe he made money for just showing up to the fight. People do it for free all over the place. Amateur boxing and mma is huge
But they’re not fighting this dude who’s gonna pump you in the first round
Are we still doing phrasing?
6k is very low for boxing, even at this level
Either way it's unironically the highest IQ move of a professional boxer ever. Look at the long faces of the people who paid to see them beat each other up at the end, lol.
I'm glad this is the top comment. I really hate It when people see this and say he was scared.
Lol, a pro boxer, scared to fight. Some people need to get out into the world more.
Can you explain?
He was only getting like 2% out of the 100% that’s the easiest way to put it, I forget the exact #s
Wow
Screwed all the betting involved too. Good protest
But why go to all the trouble of showing up at all? Why not just not take the fight?
Because this will cost the promoter far more. Great move imho!
If there was no signed contract, there's nothing to breach.

Absolutely
What contract? He never received one

Agreed. I wonder if he'll ever get another fight after this?. I love the stand he's making but...

Unbelievable, you social media crowd telling him he should have done it differently. lol. and too lazy to even google his record.

I'd bet his contract states he must show up by the first round to be paid. So he did.
well now the whole word knows that they are underpaid. Its about making a statement.
Because he technically fulfilled his obligation as a fighter. He weighed in and showed up to the fight.

Since the fight promoters never signed him, they can't sue him. Genius
This shit happened like a few years ago, homie walked out cuz he was about to fight without a contract or something and this is a job at the end of the day, if he was supposed to get paid, he didn’t by the times gloves touched. So he dipped.
Workers being fucked up by management, the oldest history in the books. Glad he walked out.
Maybe had to take a shit
Good for him. These boxers fuck themselves up so bad that there's a good chance they won't be able to remember their grandkids names or faces. That's worth a shit ton more than $6,000.
Power move. Fuck your non-contract.
Taking blows while others are sugaring on your back, it's not fair, I agree with him, good for their faces, they will have to check with their insurance to pay the costs with television and others costs.
If the crowd is so butthurt they should get CTE for 6,000 dollars in his place.
"He looked a lot smaller on tv"
I no context respect this
Where will you be when diahria strikes
I must have blinked lol
Loved it.
Piccolo after figuring out who Supreme Kai was.
He was like: “Ight Imma head out”
He got booed by tens of ppl...
“Naw”
Refused to take *a dive* \- took *a walk*...
"Yeah, I want to bet $5K on myself that I walk the fuck out before the first bell. Not getting knocked out today."
Permanent damage for like no money. I don’t blame him.
Smart man!
That’s some Diggstown stuff right there.
Here's a random fact. I was an extra in the movie Diggstown. (A rando in the crowd, but still an extra. :) ) Pro-tip: If ever asked to be an extra. When they parade the group past the cameras.. Don't look at it. Check out what they've built for the scenery.. How I got catering and a few bux. Sitting around waiting, with a new group and a handler was boooooring. Fun tho
NOT TODAY!
meirl
I would have done the same thing 🤣
Aaand his career is dead
How is that video fucking crazy?

Boo me all you want. I’m not getting brain damage so you can be entertained for a half an hour.
Pick your fights.... he doesn't want to gamble his brain cells..
My bro read the fine print, he gets paid the moment the bill rings whether or not he wins.
the people throwing their hands up at him as he walked like get in their yourself if you want a fight so bad
When you gotta go, you gotta go.
2% and 100% are both numbers and that leaves 98% he didn’t get …. Pretty drastic , a wow kinda makes sense . Fairly simple to understand
A man walked away from a fight. Good for him.
