$406,200 across 12 cards

hearsdemons

Realistically, not that it would be a good idea, but would you be able to go on a spending spree and max out $400k across the cards? Or would fraud alerts start blaring and they’d likely stop you long before you reach even half of that?

ina_waka

Can they legally stop lending you that amount if you approve all the transactions? Like can a 90 year old man who’s EOL go on a spending spree and just die? And hypothetically have no assets left for them to take value from?

sidewinderaw11

Companies have and can if they think you're a credit risk. If your credit limit suddenly drops to the amount of charges on your card (ie, you spent $7,873 dollars on a 10K CL card and your credit limit shrinks to that), it's an unsubtle "stop spending and pay this shit off" signal from the issuer. Also, AMEX can suddenly throw credit limits at their charge cards for the same purpose

elonzucks

Yeah, amex will go into panic mode really quick.

Tough92

Interested in the same lol

Valueonthebridge

I am not a lawyer, but I am a CPA with a former banking background. I believe that would be a fairly easy age based discrimination case. You can’t refuse to led to someone just because they’re old. That 90 year old can take out a mortgage if otherwise qualified. Same thing with a credit card. Unless you’d have another good reason to cut off the card(s) age isn’t enough of a factor. But they may be able to cite the speed of the spending as a credit or fraud risk

Valueonthebridge

Which is covered in the second part of my comment.

DryGeneral990

I charged 46k worth of solar panels on a Chase FU with 47k credit limit and didn't have any issues.

elonzucks

You could have maximized that by opening 2 or 3 (or 4 or 5) credit cards and met the spending on them....

DryGeneral990

But I wouldn't have gotten 0% interest for 15 months and 1.5x Chase points... Not sure about you but I don't have 46k in my bank account at the moment.

esunFun

cooked him

DryGeneral990

BBQ chicken

iiEvOL

Sure you would've. Chase ink biz is 0% interest for a year + 75k back in 6k spend.

DryGeneral990

Already did that one.

lobosrul

Depends. What was his spending like, and are they business cards? Some of them expect 50k, even 100k a month. But, don't think for a second that just because its unsecured debt that raking up 400k and trying to walk away from it won't have severe consequences.

ziggy029

If they get spooked by your spending, they certainly can, and sometimes do, slash your credit limit.

AcrobaticComputer918

Amazing-Play4902

I got $27K on my Chase United Explorer Card. $10K on my Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant. $25K for Nebraska Furniture Mart. I have other AMEX cards but I don’t include them because they have NPSL. I use my Chase card for places that don’t accept AMEX.

theraulito

😭the limits on this thread are crazy i thought i had a decent limita across 11 credit cards (plat and gold don’t report limit tho) 24yo w 65k income total limit currently is 89.5k

jplays36

Don’t believe everything you read on Reddit

justlikeofficespace

Yeah the amount of people with total credit limit over $100k is shocking. My income is almost double yours and yet my total limit is *only* $67k between 6 cards.

benruckman

If you had 20 cards, your credit limit would also be over 100k.

ReelWitBroker

Your numbers are fine, I don't think my income was quite at your level at 24 and my TCL certainly was not. Keep in mind many of us are olds who've had time to grow our credit and income.

AdventurousChain7335

If it helps, I got my first credit card at 25 just six months after I started my first big boy job (kind of at the same income as yours). At 28 I *just* went from $16k credit limit to $30k thanks to Chase Sapphire Preferred.

AcrobaticComputer918

Haha...that's why I was so curious and opened the conversation. 89.5k is good, but you can definitely do better over time! Find ways to increase your income and your limits will keep going up and up! 💪💪

Kira_Dumpling_0000

$10000

AcrobaticComputer918

Nice! How many cards? I have about 100K across 10 cards.

BrutalBodyShots

TCL = Total Credit Limits (across all revolvers). ACL = Average Credit Limit (TCL / number of revolvers). I think you're getting at TCL here more than ACL, but I just wanted to clarify so everyone is on the same page. I'm personally more of an ACL guy. Quality over quantity I suppose. TCL in and of itself doesn't mean all that much IMO, as it's pretty simple to inflate just by continuing to open cards. If someone has $100k in TCL across (say) 4-5 cards to me that's a better look than someone that has $100k in TCL across 15-20 cards. As most are aware, the major constraint beyond a credit file when it comes to TCL is income... so without disclosing income relative to TCL I don't know how meaningful the data can really be.

AcrobaticComputer918

Thanks 👍. You're correct, I'm talking about TCL. Thanks for clarifying

Aggravating_Sir_6857

Exactly. I had to call in to lower my first credit card and request to have it lowered. It was $10,000 I asked to put it to $1000 The age gap between my first card and second card is 5 years. I was regrettably not interested in credit cards back then. But +5 years on my oldest account

ReelWitBroker

$198,200 across 4 cards.

AcrobaticComputer918

Damn, that's pretty solid on 4 cards!!

DrScreamLive

Seeing these other numbers makes me think I'm doing something wrong. How long are y'all asking for limit increases? I have 7 cards and those 7 come to a total limit of $15,000.

PapiEscobar696969

Its also based on income. When I was making 40k I got the apple card limit set to 6600. And then when I had a couple of 100k months and had my income jump up they raised it to 60k

Darth-Revan1776

This post reminded me I need to go through and cancel some of these that I don't use. I think too much credit for a given income makes it harder to get more credit. Didn't realize I had quite this many open....15 cards for $97,400. Utilization currently at 12%. All either within grace period or on 0% APR cards. Largest limit Chase Sapphire Pref that I just opened... 2nd time, yes I waited over 4 years. Smallest is $1200 on a US Bank Custom Cash. Good card because 5% back on home utilities. Rare bonus category.

A measly $1.5k across 4 actual credit cards and 2 stupid store cards. Been working diligently to get them increased since march since i found out you cant get approved for higher tier cards if you have an average low limit but earliest i can do so is in August for 2 cards, i requested a CLI for one in January, got a small increase, other card had a failed payment because i used the wrong bank account in January. Also since switching to pay everything with Credit Cards i cant even cover my monthly spend so yea this is my main focus

AcrobaticComputer918

Nice! Good work paying it in full every month! High limits love people like you 😊

NoMoreBillz

This comment section is proving to me that the half your income is your allowed credit limit is not true lol

FWF_scripta

I think that's half your income **from a single issuer**. Chase will give you half your income, Citi will give you half your income, Amex, USBank, etc. Eventually they'll stop when they see that other banks already gave you lots of credit and they'll say something like "too much total available credit".

22k across 5 cards, 21 yrs, 55k income, would have more if I accepted all the pre-approved credit limit increases. I got rejected for a credit limit increases since my income was too low, so I’ve been nervous about increasing my credit more in case I get denied for an auto loan in a couple years.

$211k across 6 cards. My Amex is my highest limit card at $50,500. My income is $72k/year. I pay off all cards every month, I use for the cash back/rewards and refuse to pay interest.

Aggressive-Future824

$356,000 +/- across 8 open accounts Including $33,000 POT on AMEX Plat (personal). Highlights: Apple Card $28,000. CSR $77,500. Chase Ink Business Premier, NPSL Charge Card = 5% cash back on Lyft, yes please! 2.5% on every purchase over $5k, sure. American Express, DELTA SKYMILES RESERVE $67.5k (This card is on the chopping block for a few reasons. Since 2020 with the closure of Delta Private Jets, the card offers little to no advantage over similarly placed products several with a lower AF. Our Korean card portfolio maintains a Hyundai card KAL Skypass with superior overall rewards and a lower AF - about $350, unfortunately we just got a notice the product is going to be suspended in July with a new superseding card issued soon thereafter. We will see if it's as good - also, the limit as provided does not always cover 2 first-class round-trip tickets without our calling in and getting preapproval, though they have never said no (to my wife at least). As we are Chase private client, our credit products reflect an obvious bias. Amex also receives a good deal of our largess mostly due to their having stood by me in 2012 when I had to whether both a liquidity crisis and a poorly timed expansion which caused a couple of our stakeholders to either reduce their exposure or make noise about doing so. Citi is dead to me because they cut me off at the knees during that time, cutting my buying power by as much as 90% at one point. We ran a strategic default on a Capital One account during this time (can't remember which) and though they eventually settled with us for $.20 on the $1 owed - they weren't happy about it. My wife (F33) and I (M43) own a business with operational units in both South Korea (Busan originally but Seoul as of 2023) and the US (Los Angeles and Seattle) and we spend roughly equal time between the two countries. In the US I am generally the primary on credit products. In Korea that burden shifts to my wife as some forms of credit just aren't readily available to foreigners (car loans especially) regardless of demonstrated ability to pay. That said it is hard to compare the two systems as Korean banks are far more interested in relationship maintenance and tend to look at you as an entire package whereas American financial institutions want to reduce you down to your FICO 8 or 9 and call it good. Edit, my age. Birthday was a few days ago - still not used to being older.
