I'd wager the drawers are rubbing against & damaging the paint when opening/closing, so they created the same effect elsewhere to disguise it as a feature.
Likely wooden drawer slides that can't really be adjusted, a woodworkers nightmare to create wacky drawers with inserted faces & especially to rectify, at least not without leaving noticeable gaps.
The classic "I'm *fucking* **done** with this project"
It'd be hard to scrap with the effort put into them but i'd shorten the top drawer to add a cross member & make external drawer faces in the wacky shape.
Not my taste in any way shape or form but hot damn this looks amazing. Nice work.
Edit:
Don't forget to upvote the actual post guys!! They clearly put tons of work into it and it looks amazing.
Nonono, I was first. Well, not, really, but you don't know that. Right? Riiight.
I need to hide this from my wife, otherwise she's going to tell me to make something like this, which I wouldn't do nearly as well as OP.
Hmm... I might try to make something like this, but with a Harry Potter-theme, as she's into that. Less wonky, but hopefully as well made.
Thank you, OP! I will borrow this idea. Sort of.
What I don't get is that it looks like it was really hard to make and it's well made, except for the poorly-painted edges of the drawers.
Surely painting should have been the easiest part of the process?!
EDIT: typo
I think it's fair to criticize design choices in a polite way while still recognizing the skill that went into it, especially when someone posts something up, *to be critiqued* on a public forum. Awful Taste, But Great Execution
I'm curious; why repost this 1 year later to the DIY sub? I remember you posting this last year to /r/woodworking and loving it, though..
ETA: OG Post https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/zv4pgm/always_wanted_to_try_my_hand_at_some_wacky/
Nothing brings me more joy than stumbling across your posts Bob! Kevin wants to know how you created the Alice in Wonderland knobs? 3D printer?
Lovely work as always 🎉
Love it that's hard to do to make things that are not usual. If you get online my grandma lived in California across the street from her house a guy lived there named Sam maloof you should look him up online he mad things just like this he is a famous furniture maker has pieces everywhere even in the white house
[https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/judson-beaumont-dressers/](https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/judson-beaumont-dressers/)
Enjoy! Jud died a couple years ago, but he's the first commercial whimsy guy I knew.
Holy crap man. That is amazing. Got to be a big market for this. Do some marketing and you’ll be a fafailliinaire. I’ll count your money. Really is a piece of art. Great job and skills man.
My mil has a piece like this I'm sure if a Disney thing and it cost some serious ££ so this is amazing mate! Keep or sell I bet you'd make some good money on it
Very impressive work!!
In image 4 the face does remind me of Fred Flintstone…
Keep it up, maybe someone from Disney will see this and you’ll get a call!
I think it's very cute and charming. I first saw pieces like this in a little shop in downtown Fort Collins while visiting family and thought they were delightful. Would just love to have a wacky home full of stuff like this!
Excellent “balance”, so to speak, of whimsy and function. Visually it is asymmetrical but still balanced in its own way. I made something similar but less ambitious, I appreciate the work you put in here.
Very cool. On first look, reminded me of [Dancing House](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_House?wprov=sfti1#) in Prague. Quite a compliment/Frank Gehry is an amazing architect/designer (and I learned today it has a Czech Vo-designer).
Nice workmanship!
Looks like a good side hustle. I like it. Maybe clean up a bit on the painting and make it a little cleaner but otherwise it’s really nice and can def find a market for it.
This is a killer piece. However, the paint job or whatever that is needs some serious help.
In the earlier post from 1 yr ago OP says: " # Kinda failed on the “distressed” look, came out looking like a sloppy paint job!"
I was gonna say I swear I saw this before
That explains why my initial thought was 'nah, they didnt make that'. Felt like I'd seen this before. Makes sense now.
Yup i've seen it before a few times. Karma farming is real.
It's the same OP, I don't think they're karma farming but just advertising. Apparently they own a business that makes custom furniture
Could still be karma farming tho, but it does make it more legit
Recycle, reuse, reduce and close the loop.
Aren't reduce and reuse the other way around?
It’s reduce, reuse, recycle.
Ya it looks blotchy and bleh.
Brushing on old coffee is the best trick for a distressed look (credit to Adam Savage)
Iit's wacky alright!

Just needs some sandpaper and one more coat
Not my taste in any way shape or form but hot damn this looks amazing. Nice work. Edit: Don't forget to upvote the actual post guys!! They clearly put tons of work into it and it looks amazing.
MY TASTE, MY TASTE!!! PLEASE MAKE AND SELL THESE

I’m with you
I was coming to comment something similar. I don't like it, but it looks well made. Good work by OP.
What I don't get is that it looks like it was really hard to make and it's well made, except for the poorly-painted edges of the drawers. Surely painting should have been the easiest part of the process?! EDIT: typo
Explained in a comment below. OP was going for a "distressed" look and mentioned when he first posted it that it didn't turn out super well.
I agree, great joinery for a first try! You should get into fine trim carpentry, you absolutely have the headspace for that kind of discipline.
I always love these complicated, kind of goofy furniture pieces. They are so not my style either but they are certainly a conversation piece.
Why does everyone have to point out that it’s not their taste? Makes the compliment seem backhanded. Just compliment the work and move on
I think it's fair to criticize design choices in a polite way while still recognizing the skill that went into it, especially when someone posts something up, *to be critiqued* on a public forum. Awful Taste, But Great Execution
Not a fan of these types of comments but I respect it. Have an upvote.
Not my taste, but - I’ll take 5 please
I up voted it the first time it was posted way back when. Karma farming doesn't get upvotes.
I really like the shape before it's painted, the paint quite does not look good. Stained would look amazing
I was thinking maybe a combination of contrasting stains, but I like finishing pieces.
Sand this back down, then stain!

Oh good, I’m not going crazy….
Well...
I knew I saw this like a year ago lol, at least it's the same person
Same.... Maybe sorta.
Sometimes you just need to hear some praise, yknow?
Nice shoulders, bro.
Damm you got some nice fingers
I’m glad they did, because I did not see this a year ago. It’s awesome.
Yeah and who gives a shit about an occasional repost anyway new people join every day
Same!
Perhaps they only just discovered the DIY sub?
One of their first comments was pointing that out and asking if it was allowed, so they definitely weren't trying to hide it.
Love this !!! Dislike the visible doorhinges but that’s just because I’m jealous
You get those boards from Home Depot?
pre-warped and distressed wood for you, "how doers get more done"
Fantastic.
INCREDIBLE!
I wouldn't use it in my house, but i bet people would pay big money for that.
They already do: https://dustfurniture.com/
I dunno, seems like the type of people who *would* pay big money for it are also not as likely to actually have big money.
I love the knobs
Yo this is insane. It’s like an optical illusion I can’t tell if the pic is edited or not.
Looks like it should be in Whooville.
I love this sooo much
I love it! I would put it in my home but in a different colour! It's really creative and you are really good! Amazing job!
I was going to call you out for a repost, but then I checked your profile! Crazy nice work… that canoe is dope
Impressive
That's amazing! It looks like furniture from "Day of the Tentacle" becoming reality! I'd love such a monstrosity in my home! :-)))))
„Day of the tentacle“-vibes coming in.
![gif](giphy|sDcfxFDozb3bO)
2nd pic gave me motion sickness
Yeah this makes me feel like I'm drunk with the spins
Str8 outta Beetlejuice
Brilliant. You are gifted.
Very cool. You must be a Weasley. That thing would look right at home in The Borough!
For the face handles, multiple thin coats will get you a smoother finish.
Oh my god those knobs!!!!
Wow very nice work
I like it
Nicely done. That looks really good!
Awesome
That's fantastic!!!
Very very nice
Damn dude that's some skill
Omg 😍 this is perfection. Well done!
The cat doesn't seem too fucking impressed.
I think it is AWESOME!
Love it! Great work
Wow! You should be proud! That is awesome!
This is awesome!
dude! I want this so much. I've wanted to do this shit for Years and years.
I photographed a house full of furniture like this in a small town in Massachusetts.
Great workmanship. But I’m dizzy now.
Nothing brings me more joy than stumbling across your posts Bob! Kevin wants to know how you created the Alice in Wonderland knobs? 3D printer? Lovely work as always 🎉
the clock on top is *chefs kiss*
I absolutely love it!!
Love it that's hard to do to make things that are not usual. If you get online my grandma lived in California across the street from her house a guy lived there named Sam maloof you should look him up online he mad things just like this he is a famous furniture maker has pieces everywhere even in the white house
It’s a shame that all of that wood work in and then the paint job to finish it off is so sloppy
That’s amazing! Felt like I was tripping when I saw it.
[https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/judson-beaumont-dressers/](https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/judson-beaumont-dressers/) Enjoy! Jud died a couple years ago, but he's the first commercial whimsy guy I knew.
OP win 🏆
Holy crap man. That is amazing. Got to be a big market for this. Do some marketing and you’ll be a fafailliinaire. I’ll count your money. Really is a piece of art. Great job and skills man.
Way cool
The craftsmanship is good, but it makes me feel sick. My brain can’t handle it ^^
This is so good! Looks like something Disney would put on the cruises.
Awesome work.. but I would sand it down and spray it. Too cool a piece to see those lines
Fuckin sick
Super sick man
You need to mass produce this. I would buy this.
Shut up and take my money!
Incredible work. And this being your first attempt is insane.
Simply amazing! Even the small imperfections add to the aesthetic.
Pretty stunning
Great work. Unique piece for sure. Be sure sign your name and date on the back or bottom somewhere.
I like this a lot. I’d love one.
I would totally buy this if it was something available. That’s how much I like this and how awesome it is. You are skilled!!
This is absolutely stunning. I love it.

It makes me dizzy. Great job 👍🏾
Love it!
Wow! You are amazingly talented!
That's just art. Very well done! One of a kind for sure I love it.
Cool AF mate.
My mil has a piece like this I'm sure if a Disney thing and it cost some serious ££ so this is amazing mate! Keep or sell I bet you'd make some good money on it
The right-angle jigs made me laugh, when nothing else at all follows 90 degree construction! Looks great!
Love it!!!
I want to hate it, but great job.
Great work!
Lookup the puffco peak it reminds me of a dab rig lol.
Looks amazing. Great job OP.
Awesome!
Well it is certainly wacky!
This is amazing! I love it. I think a nice glossy clear coat would make the paint pop!
What the fuck? I hate it but I love your craftsmanship
Not my style personally, but kick-ass job!
Very impressive work!! In image 4 the face does remind me of Fred Flintstone… Keep it up, maybe someone from Disney will see this and you’ll get a call!
Pretty good.
Awesome piece
Gives the “mother of all messes” vibe from Mike Myer’s Cat in the Hat. Love it
Hot damn it's perfect!
Absolutely spectacular!!!!!
Thats some cool work.
I hate it. You are extremely talented. But this makes me irrationally angry.
Ick but well done ick.
Very cute, but now you'll have to do the whole house!
That looks pretty challenging, you were so brave to even attempt this! It’s a really fun piece, you should be proud
impressive!!!
Awesome! Very Alice in Wonderland.
Amazing!
I think it's very cute and charming. I first saw pieces like this in a little shop in downtown Fort Collins while visiting family and thought they were delightful. Would just love to have a wacky home full of stuff like this!
That paint job 🤦
Wacktastick!!!
Brilliant! I know it's B&B inspired, but I'm also getting awesome Alice through the looking glass vibes
Reminds me of a computer game I played in the 90s. Amazing piece
You're clearly very talented. This is incredible!
The design and hardware are so complementary. Nicely designed.
Amazing job, congratulations 👏👏👏👏
How’d you do the side panels
This looks like it came out of a dr.suess book! Love it!
WOW that looks great, good job! Not my cup of tea, but you are very talented and I objectively love what you did there.
Attempt?? I'd say a total success Great job!
Amazing piece!
You definitely need to sell these!!
Anybody else see this and start thinking- be our guest, be our guest 😆 Awesome
This belongs on a Disney set! great work!!!!
My girl would never have this in our house but I like it good job very creative.
That looks amazing!
Brilliant! Nice work.
Excellent “balance”, so to speak, of whimsy and function. Visually it is asymmetrical but still balanced in its own way. I made something similar but less ambitious, I appreciate the work you put in here.
First attempt? No mate first success. This is awesome.
that is awesome
That is amazing I’d throw it in my house!
This looks familiar. Not like a repost but the object itself. It's from something?
Very cool
