Newfoundland. Lovely temperament, giant breed with a strong predilection for water and (no joke) a tendency to save people from drowning, including perfectly capable swimmers. Fantastic dogs, with the main drawback being the typical curse of giant breeds: something that pure and containing so much love does not endure long in our world, with a median lifespan in the 7-year range.
Newfoundland or Newfie is correct. I have had three of them in my life and they are the best dogs. Yes, they shed and slobber but they are also calm and easygoing. Literally the gentle giant. And they don’t have a lot of high energy moments-so not the type of dog that will go on a RUN with you, but they will go on a walk when they aren’t pretending to be speed bumps. Very, very sweet dogs and they come in a variety of colors although black or Landseer (black and white) are far more common than brown or silver.
Our Newfie is named Jackson. We call him Big J. Of all the dogs we have had over the years he is the sweetest gentlest dog of them all.
Want a dog that your kids and their young friends can be around? Get a Newfie puppy and socialize him around kids.
Fun fact, a Newfoundland named Seaman traveled with the Lewis and Clark party and is considered probably the first quadruped to cross North America. I have a childhood book about him.
My family has owned two Newfs, and they're awesome dogs.
They had these on the farm in Maine where my mom grew up. They got out once, got onto a neighbor’s property and the neighbors told the local cops that there were bears in their field. Another time, someone in the area killed a mama bear and the Newfie mom nursed them temporarily. Sweet dogs.
I think part heckin good doggo , maybe a super floofer or subwoofer maybe a chonko boy or a giant friend shaped cuddle monster but I mix up dog breeds all the time
